26 September 2009: Well, THAT sucked!
Okay, I know that this has been beaten into the ground, and that other far more knowledgeable posters have dissected the causes for Cal's calamity. From my perspective, it just looked like Cal was slower all around, and Oregon was completely hyped. In fact, after Cal could only manage a field goal after the opening fumble, I turned to the wife and said, "Well, we lost this one already."
That being said, I'd like to welcome all of you younger Cal fans to the official Old Blue's club. Now you know. The shellacking in Eugene was the initiation. Now, maybe (just maybe), you'll understand our behavior a bit better. You've finally been given a peek at our psyche, and the reason every Old Blue still alive fears success more than the boogerman. Having the Bears win games, get noticed, and gain respect is a tarp. It's some horrible plot hatched by Dracula, Nixon, Tommy Trojan and Joe Bruin to rip the hearts out of Cal fans. Oh, and no, it never ends.
The good news (for all of you out there), is that after a while, the scar tissue does start to accumulate, and these start to sting less and less. Oh, they still sting, but not as much. You learn to not think in terms of planning trips to Pasadena in January. You learn to react to pre-season hype and high poll position with the sort of fear Frankenstein's monster had for fire. And you learn to approach games wondering if this will be the one that will stick the shiv into your left kidney.
And, you also learn to start to talk about success in terms of beating select teams, rather than overall record and BCS bowl appearances. After all, back in the day the overall won-loss record was meaningless, so long as we beat Furd. Throw in a victory over one of the LA schools, and we were over the moon with delight and delierium!
Yeah, you kids point at us and make cracks about bitter Old Blues, and so forth. Little did you all know that you were simply mocking the things you were to be. But through it all, the Bear Will Not Quit, the Bear Will Not Die. You know it, you tell the story. We had a little party down in Newport.
Welcome to my world, bitches. Welcome to being a Cal fan!
GO BEARS!

It’s funny, when the score was like 25-3 at halftime, I was quite numb. My mind had already moved ahead to the Trojans.
I’ve been a Cal fan for sometime, clearly. Or maybe those are the Bills+Kings years added on.

Hah! I guess it doesn’t matter if you meant the Sacto Kings or the LA Kings, as both franchises have the same abysmal history.
Anyway, my little post was more a way to get the kids to understand why Old Blues are the way we are. This isn’t our first time watching this movie, you know.
But no matter what, we are there, wearing our Blue & Gold and suffering the slings and arrows of being a Cal fan. Roll on, you Bears.

You bet, SoCal. I wrote this to rags earlier:
Old Blues, as I mentioned to CalBear81, witness great losses, and still buy season tickets. This loss is part of being a Golden Bear.
Bear danger
"Running away can activate the bear's hunting instincts and lead to it perceiving the human as prey. Finally, if a bear does attack, the usual advice is to curl into a [[fetal position]] so as to shield vital organs and appear non-threatening."

As a life-long Golden Bears, Raiders, Athletics, Warriors, and Sharks fan...
I’ve learned to live with disappointment when it comes to sports, and relish on days gone by…
I’ve learned to embrace the term “Some day…” and in turn truly believe in it…
I know Money Ball ain’t winning any rings any time soon… I know Commitment to Excellence is code for commitment to waiting for Al Davis to go belly-up… I know Run-TMC is far gone and we’ll never get a Chamberlain type again… And unless you’re bouncing footballs off nets, San Jose ain’t exactly a championship city…
But I believe… to shamelessly quote the Warriors, “We Believe!”… Rings and Trophies WILL return to the Bay in my lifetime…
Call me delusional… But it’ll happen guys… It’ll happen…. someday…
Like my mom once told me after a Cal v. U$C victory in the 90's, "See son I told you, Trojans always pop under pressure"

My friend's theory is
that Cal losing is the Sharks’ fault. See, the Bay Area is only allotted a certain number of victories per year and the Sharks’ success of late only means fewer wins for the Giants, A’s, Cal etc…

We better get those baseball teams gone, then. Even in sucking they take up too many wins. Cal, Sharks, and Warriors would be great if they were gone!

I didn’t ask if it was a percentage thing or a total # of wins thing. I think it’s a percentage, because then a 9er game would count for like ten Giants games.

If it makes you feel any better...
At least the Bay Area isn’t San Diego… We are at least allowed to win Championships… even if they all were pre-1996
