We should all give hugs to our foreign readers like LeonPowe and Stanfurd who stayed up into the middle of the night to watch that “game.” Come on over, guys!

I want to hide but I can't
I keep coming back to this blog…
I also kind of wish that I didn’t stay up to get depressed either.
Still can’t believe it!
I avoided CGB for 2 days. but then I actually did some work and was productive, so that made me dizzy. I had to sit down.
I can’t believe I stayed up to watch that whole thing, and THEN due to the stupid policies of companies in China, because we get this week off due to national day (60th anniversary of the founding of the PRC) we have to work on the weekend, so I had to go into work on Sunday after the massacre. AND if that weren’t enough I had my worst golf outing in a long time – shooting 116 (i’m usually in the mid 90s) on Saturday.
But I’ll be watching Sunday from Ho Chi Minh City (Yes! I’m changing one commie country for another)
Thanks for the shoutout
When can you come over to give me a hug?
And a jet ski, though I guess you’d have to pick that up in Japan?

After the Cal game I went down to the furd. A Cal alum had tickets for some reason and offered them to me, so being a general college football fan in addition to a Cal fan I figured why not and headed down for what I thought would be a good game (and a chance to root against Stanfurd). The roar of that stadium when the Cal score was announced was one of the most embarrassing moments of my life (ok, maybe not quite, but it was extremely painful). They announced it multiple times because, as they PA guy said, “it sounds so good!” And of course, what should have been a good game ended up being a thumping by Stanfurd.
I should have stayed home and drank. So I can use a hug from anyone :)
I’m surprised the crowd at a Furd game is actually capable of roaring.

I watched Arreola vs. Klitchko, which was an entertaining mismatch for one of the heavyweight belts, and a replay of the K-1 World Gran Prix Final 16, which was pretty awesome through and through. And I got a little exercise riding over to my friend’s house. If I can just avoid talking about football at all until next week, I’ll be fine.

speaking of hugs.....we tied in college fantasy football
Ok, I wasn’t exactly feeling sorry for you leading into this week’s college fantasy football matchup, I wanted to remain undefeated after all. But I was slightly empathetic, and was hoping that some strange fluke might happen whereby neither of us would lose.
We tied.
Ok, step back for a second and think how bizarre that is, for each of us to have 9 guys produce the same number of points. Now, about to blow your mind….we only tied because Clausen threw that TD with 20 seconds left in the game, giving him the exact number of points you needed. It was meant to be. Now that the hugfest is over, I’m going back to beating the shit out of the rest of our league…..assuming these guys and their 50+ point QBs will stop doing that.

On that subject, I don’t see the value in trading Shipley for Royster. Especially since I’m not at all convinced of the quality of Penn State’s run blocking, and Shipley leads receivers even though I was dumb enough to sit him this week. (Seriously, I would have been fine with actually-factually losing if I could get through a week without a grievous personnel mistake.)

In a sense yes. Look, this is a game we SHOULD have won. Not only did we not win, we were destroyed. I would like to know what the fuck happened. As much as I love Tedford, he has massive explaining to do. What do you think happened? I mean, with our talent we SHOULD have won. Not only did we not win, we were destroyed. This was a complete embarrassment. The ramifications of which will be felt for years to come. I am completely at a loss, there are very few excuses that can even be made rationally. It looked a lot like a team that was not coached well. There can be no other explanation. We were out coached.
"Practice does not make perfect. Only perfect practice makes perfect."
Vince Lombardi
I don’t really know if we SHOULD have won. Oregon was probably deserving of a top-25 ranking based on their strength of schedule (UNC @ 22…really?). They have a very potent offense, they were playing from the underdog position (from which solid teams usually gain some advantage), and they have tremendous home field advantage. It’s not like we got smashed by EWU. Oregon is a good football team, and today they shoved it in our face, down our throats, and perhaps in a few other…yeah.
no, we should have won
if we are vying for a pac-10 championship, a BCS bowl, and we want to think of ourselves as one of the top teams in the country, this is exactly the kind of game where we need to show up.
yes, oregon is a very good team, and they have a great home field advantage, but we are (or at least we thought we were) a better team, so we should have won the game. that doesn’t mean we should have expected to give them a total beatdown by 40 points or anything, but i expected us to at least play them close and thought we had a good chance of winning. not only were we (supposedly) the better team to begin with, but they have an inexperienced o-line, a freshman running back, and their quarterback had been lousy the past 3 games. we should have won. we certainly shouldn’t have been demolished like we were.

To be honest I was extremely worried that the score would be reversed going into the game today, especially after the opening kickoff fumble. Oregon was hardly playing dominant football heading into today. Cal has a good team and it will rise from these ashes. Hopefully next week.

What the hell happened
I can’t re-watch the game.
But to review, no..would take too much time, to sum up:
1) Missed opportunities early – Shoulda taken that early fumble on the kickoff and shoved it in the end zone. ’Didn’t take advantage of either of their fumbles. (Gave ‘em both back). ’Didn’t take advantage of outstanding field position. College football is a game of momentum, emotion, and morale. We could have put our foot on their throat early and changed the whole complexion of the game.
2) WTF Defense – I know their run is more potent than their pass, but even a blind elephant could have hit the bubble screen for 5 yds on us. We had our corners playing 10+ yds back. It’s almost like we were playing tight with our LB’s, but really soft with our corners like we were afraid of the big pass play. Inexperience in our LB core showed, but I put this one mostly on scheme. Once they got rolling, it didn’t matter any more. I put this fail mostly on the coaches.
3) WTF Offense – Surprisingly vanilla considering their relative inexperience in the secondary and how aggressive they were. Would trying some misdirection have killed us? It’s bad when I know we’re gonna run up the middle every time we do that WR motion into a TE spot. My suspicion is that the play calls weren’t that bad, but we were just killed by missed blocking assignments all over the place. Considering that they were missing their best cover corner after the 1st play, I was really disappointed our WR’s couldn’t take advantage. Not sure if WR’s weren’t getting open, Riley was making poor reads/bad throws, or if Riley just didn’t have enough time. I put this fail mostly on the players.
I gladly accept Twist's hug, and I could use another
And I remain hopeful that this team can turn it around in a hurry, beginning this Saturday. I still believe that USC is more as overrated than as Cal, and that the Trojans will be a significantly easier opponent than Oregon was yesterday. Not only is the game in Berkeley, but none of the Trojan quarterbacks are capable of playing the way Masoli did yesterday. The only thing that scares me about USC is Joe McKnight and the “Trojan mystique”.
All that said, I’m really concerned about this Bears team. Yes, even great teams often suffer a bad loss sometime during the year. But great (good?) teams don’t get blown out of the water like the Bears did yesterday, no matter who they’re playing. Instead, they lose because they make mistakes (turnovers, penalties) and give up a few big plays.
That’s not what happened yesterday. Cal was dismantled. Cal was disemboweled. There were a few penalties, to be sure, but none really turned the momentum of the game, and Oregon made just as many. There were a couple fumbles, too, but rather than giving an opportunity to the Ducks, both simply deleted an opportunity that had just been handed to the Bears. Of the two teams, it was actually the Ducks that made the potentially game-changing mistakes. Quite frankly, Cal probably should have lost 55 to 0, but for Oregon’s first-quarter miscues.
I haven’t given up on this team yet, and I hope this was just the bad day to end all bad days. But I’m more worried about the prospects for the rest of the season than I ever have been during the Tedford era.
Go Bears!

Moving on.
As much as the loss yesterday to Oregon hurt and stunned me, I’m sure there are 80 kids back at Berkeley who feel worse. I still believe in the team, and will support them forever. I just won’t put too much of myself into it for the rest of the season _.
I put back on my Cal shirt i ripped off yesterday.
Good luck to the coaching staff or else we’re in it for another mind numbing season.

Worst. Game. Ever.
I can’t remember a worse loss. Maybe when we lost to Nebraska 45-0, but that was during the Holmoe era and nobody expected anything from us. Yesterday was the worst performance by a Tedford team to date, obvi. I’ve never seen a Tedford team just lie down and quit like that. Even the Udub game of 2007 was better than this.

I'd Say Pretty Much Zero Chance
But Gameday at Berkeley is the least of my worries. I’m just getting tired of hearing every year how “this team is different”, that “we have the talent to compete for the Pac-10”, that “we’ve been more focused than ever”, etc. when we look the same year after year after year. Any time we face a team that has a glaring weakness, we turn it into a massive strength. Any opposing player who is struggling during the year, we make them look like a Heisman candidate. Any phase we should dominate, we look like ass. Any game of serious consequence, we look like we had just learned the game of football two days ago. And yet, here I am, getting sucked in again and again. I really thought the stars were aligning this year with the schedule getting progressively more difficult, USC and Oregon looking weaker, coming through in the clutch at Minnesota. An yet, once again, we go splat on the road when it really matters. I would have loved to have been on the inside last week, watching the prepping for the Oregon game and seeing if there was a subtle undercurrent of fear being spread throughout the team. So, until proven otherwise, I’m assuming a loss for every Pac-10 road game.
Thanks for letting me vent.

I was there
I remained much more calm than if I had been watching the game on tv. My friends I went to the game with, like many Cal fans, just freaked out and ditched me in the 4th quarter because I refused to leave. I mean, I understand frustration, but I paid for the ticket and made the drive to support my team. If I had left early, I would have felt like any of the opposing teams fans we mock for leaving early from Memorial.
After seeing that loss, my prediction is, honestly, that we won’t lose another game in the conference. The team was out-coached and outplayed, but they won’t respond by giving up or conceding the season or anything like that. This team will respond with a huge amount of focus and determination next week against USC, so they can redeem themselves. Frankly, I think the coaches will have to calm the players down slightly before next week, so that they don’t make the sort of errors caused by being too passionate or pressing too hard.
Maybe working with the team gives me a biased perspective, but I hope everyone calms down a little. I’ll help provide hugs. This team isn’t as bad as they looked Saturday, and we’re better than #24.

It’s funny, because I’m a pessimistic person normally, but not when it comes to watching sports. I did my freaking out after a loss back when I played sports, when I had an impact on the outcome. LA Times
The LA Times laughed at us today. Basically outlined many of the things that other posters have said. Some questioning of whether Tedford is the man to take us to the Rose Bowl, outlined our historic football failure to get there, and basically suggested that there is a culture of unreliability at Cal. Ouch. Hard to argue with much of it. We are going to find out what Tedford teams are made of next week. Blowout = Tedford on notice, good fight = status quo, win = Tedfordisgodagain. (Well, maybe hes just a new messiah and God per se if he wins)
On a positive note, maybe USC is only half as good as people think since they didn’t exactly cover the spread against WSU

Anyone who thought we would get through this Minn to UCLA stretch without a loss was drinking the Kool-Aid. At the beginning of the season, everyone on this blog thought we would drop one or two of this stretch (as far as I can remember—Anyone want to look this up?). I wanted us to win yesterday’s game, but I’m not surprised we didn’t. BUT I am surprised/horrified at how thoroughly the Ducks dismantled our team.
Right
It’s not the loss that’s shocking; it’s the WAY our team was so thoroughly outclassed. If someone told me that it turned out that the entire team has swine flu, I would believe it — they just looked that bad out there.
So, basically, you gotta Go Bears!

Agreed. They were just a few mustaches away from looking like Rollie Fingers, Sal Bando, Catfish Hunter, Reggie Jackson, and the gang.

Just watched Favre make a miracle pass to beat the 49ers
Why must I be a fan of bay area teams? FML
But the San Jose Earthquakes just beat DC United for their first road win of the season
But they are still at the bottom of the Western Conference Table.

That
is really confusing to me. I do understand us not getting Gameday, and I’m not terribly upset about it, but why did they choose BC? I really don’t get it. Is there some special interest to that game? It’s not even on national television, as far as I can tell…
I've been Honked...
Who knows what is going on there…maybe it’s just a ratings grab. Neither of those teams is ranked. Or maybe they can save some money staying close to Bristol?
Yeah, that’s probably it. Also because it’s Boston and ESPN looooves Boston.
I’m really surprised it wasn’t Miami. Although I guess since they’re not playing in the Orange Bowl it makes sense. Athens would’ve made more sense, since Herbie’s going to have to fly 4 hours south now for the Okie-Miami game (no way him and Brent go to Berkeley now).

I need something stronger than a hug...
It’s not the loss that shocked me. It’s fucking 42-3!!!
I woke up at 3AM, got ready got into the car at 4AM, entered the address for a parking lot in Eugene into my GPS and it said it would take me 10 hours to get there. WTF?! I looked at the step-by-step directions and it was telling me to go to Seattle (from Bellevue where I’m at), take 1-5 N to Vancouver, take a u-turn and drive back to Eugene. WTF!? I asked it to skip the I-5 N part and it gave me a more sensible 5:30 direction which asked me to go into Seattle and then swing back down. At this point, I ran back in, turned on my PC, looked at Google Maps and went like a normal person down south and merging with I-5S near Renton instead of Seattle.
And then I witnessed the worst fucking game of football that was played.
And then I drove back with traffic jams near Eugene, Corvallis, Salem, Portland, Tacoma and Bellevue. It was 10:30PM when I finally went to bed. What a long day.
And then the next day I found out that India got blown out by Pakistan in cricket. And then I watched 49ers lose to Brett fucking Favre. Go drink some donkey piss Favre.
To give this weekend some poetic justice I cleaned the toilet and took a nice long shower.

I finished all the beer I had in stock yesterday once I got home. My 21-year old friend went home to California to visit family and won’t be back ‘till later in the week so I’m stuck.

The Oak Barrel in Berkeley, and MoreBeer in Concord, are great places to help get you started. Also check out John Palmer’s amazing book, How to Brew. Every household should own a copy. And finally, the guys at the Brewing Network, based in scenic Pacheco, are both informative and funny as hell.

I figured out why we sucked so bad: the Cal players were doing a study on the effects of heavy drinking on the liver. So studious!
