Cincy's playing a 3-4, haven't given up a touchdown
Gives us a good preview about the best ways to attack Oregon State’s O-line.
Cincy’s offense hasn’t played too great.

I heard that game referred to as a “rivalry” the other day. It made me giggle.
I am a horrible bruin-bear crossbreed.
If you go back in time, it actually is a total rivalry.
Jack Elway coached at SJSU back when John Elway sucked it up for the furd… San Jose State won EVERY. SINGLE. TIME.
also, SJSU came from behind to win 35-34 just a few years ago. I really wished they didnt play in Stanfurd Stadium every year. They should rotate that schedule, because SJSU has a 80% home win record vs stanfurd.

He was a top 5 pick anyway. I don’t think being coached by Kiffin really changes anything—there’s only so much you can teach in college and M. Kiffin can’t really implement the NFL-style Cover-2 stuff against a team like Florida anyway. (Chris Brown covered this on Doc Saturday, I think.)

Good evening. In less than an hour, quarterbacks from here will join others from around the world. And you will be launching the largest aerial battle in this history of mankind.
Pac10 — that word should have new meaning for all of us today.
We can’t be consumed by our petty differences anymore.
We will be united in our common interests.
Perhaps its fate that today is the 19th of September, and you will once again be fighting for our freedom, not from tyranny, oppression, or persecution — but from USC.
We’re fighting for our right to live, to exist.
And should we win the day, the 19th of September will no longer be known as an American holiday, but as the day when the world declared in one voice:
“We will not go quietly into the night!
We will not vanish without a fight!
We’re going to live on!
We’re going to survive!"
Today, we celebrate our Independence Day!

Can somebody answer a question that's been bugging me?
I’ve seen a few teams (Cincinnati, Texas Tech) trying to deal with crowd noise. The QB walks back and forth around the line talking to the linemen. Each offensive line guy moves around all over the place, turns their heads, lifts and lowers their butts. Why does this not constitute a false start? It seems like a good strategy to do this to prevent FS calls.
The #1 greatest threat to America: BEARS
I don’t think the offense can false start until it’s set, and I don’t think you can be considered set if nobody’s in position to take a snap.

I don’t think a fight with Manny would be any less of a mismatch. I think we’ve all kind of been mislead as to the strength of the welterweight division. Cotto’s lost a step, Mosley is just trying to stay a step ahead of his own age, Pacquiao is too small (fast enough to beat Cotto, though), Clottey’s a choke artist, Berto doesn’t look like a very high-ceiling prospect, and fuck Margacheato. So yeah, Mayweather taking the fight with Marquez was terrible, but if he had fought Cotto I think the result could have been even worse.

by Avinash Kunnath on Sep 19, 2009 9:16 PM PDT up reply actions
Re: the injury – I don’t know, to be honest. Paragon knows about this kind of thing, and he wasn’t surprised that Barkley wasn’t able to play this week, as those injuries get worse before they heal. I haven’t asked Paragon what his guess is about Barkley’s injury; as I understand it he’s taken to bed in disgust.
I didn’t watch the game but from what I can tell of the repeated throws into double coverage, Corp didn’t distinguish himself. How much of that was bad judgment against Sarkisian knowing the predominant plays for inexperienced starters who are being sheltered (Booty and Sanchez in his time), I don’t know, but Corp was incredibly lucky to not have thrown 5 or 6 picks today.
So I dunno, it might be for the best if Barkley starts next week… but without wanting to be rude, I don’t know that SC can do anything against WSU other than try and not make it look like the rot has set in.
Is Mustain that bad not to give him a shot?
Contact if you want to chat: bearsnecessities@gmail.com
by Avinash Kunnath on Sep 19, 2009 9:28 PM PDT up reply actions
I honestly don’t know. My abiding impression of Mustain is seeing him put into games for garbage time, start out strong, and then throw an INT. That might be unfair… (checks ESPN) not entirely – last year he threw 2 touchdowns and 2 interceptions.
I guess that whatever the coaches are looking for, Mustain’s not showing it. I don’t know if starting a third QB really solves anything.
Let’s assume for a minute that SC is going to lose to Cal and 1 – 2 other Pac 10 teams. Given the number of solid offensive players who are eligible to go pro, it seems to me that this is the season to get a QB experience to compensate for newer WRs and RBs next year. If Barkley’s the guy, might as well get him the game time now instead of rotating.
How many of the skill players are gone? I’m under the impression a lot of them would be coming back.

I haven’t really looked at it, but I think that Damian Williams and McKnight are both eligible to leave, and I suspect that a number of the WRs and RBs would be as well. Stanley Havili certainly would be, and while he has his moments (like fumbling today) it’s hard to think he wouldn’t be missed.
If Reggie Bush’s hands were made entirely out of butter, you’d get Joe McKnight.

Glad to see BYU lose
So they won’t potentially take a BCS bowl bid away from us (if we somehow don’t win the Pac-10).

“And that pass is almost intercepted..”
Let’s guess which quarterback they were talking about.

Or the converse, Kansas State is going to give Colorado and Iowa State runs for their money as the shambling wrecks du jour of the Big 12 North. God that division sucks.

I wonder if Nebraska (I really don’t believe much in Kansas) will be able to pull the upset in the Big 12 title game against Texas (I don’t believe much in anyone else).

Nope.
A non sequitur: this year overall has a very 2007-y feeling to it so far and yet I still can’t imagine anyone upsetting Florida or Texas, except for perhaps Bama in the SEC Championship Game. I dunno what that means.

Proud?
Ucla is showing that a team can go 3-0, beat an opponent by two touchdowns, and still look like warmed over diarrhea in the process.
There is nothing about that victory for anyone to take pride in other than getting a W.
Mark it "8", Dude.
I’m going to go ahead and say it—Cal and UCLA have a 10% chance of both being undefeated into their matchup. How weird would that be.

quite unexpected
but based on their schedule, and ours, very possible.
either way, i expect a big crowd for that game…
and a lot of “sons of ……….” playing by the bands as per usual…

Color me Forbath-envied
Why can’t Cal get a kicker like that?
I am a horrible bruin-bear crossbreed.
I wish Anger could placekick...
Imagine a 60 yard anger smash for 3 points.

Today, after waiting on the bench for three years, fracturing my fibula, and losing my job to a nineteen-year-old, I finally got a chance to start for one of the best teams in the country. We lost to a team that went 0-12 last year. FML

He did call them one of the best teams in the country...
So there’s solace in that.
But that’s gotta be a tough one to take, dude.
I wanted us to be your only loss on the season. Though I admit, after seeing you at the top for so long, it doesn’t hurt me to see change. I’m very glad it was a conference loss…

I disagree that this should be a tough loss to take
Let’s be honest, Washington does not suck. This isn’t the Trojans losing to Furd in LA. All indications are that Washington is kind of for real.
But still, that was a funny/acidic comment.
Mark it "8", Dude.

I think I mentioned this in the Cal report Card thread, but it bears repeating:
Colt McCoy sucks so bad I’m going to start Jimmy Clausen next week and for the conceivable future on my fantasy football team.

For those who like cheerleaders...
In the Utah @ Oregon game, there’s a stunningly gratuitous shot of a Utah cheerleader exhibiting…‘flexibility’. I believe it’s at about 7 mins remaining in the 3rd quarter. ESPN. HD – thank you very much.
It’s dirtier because she’s from Utah.
carp, can you get a clip of it and post it NSFW here for all the depraved?
