SI Article about Best & the Heismann

I'm not sure if this is a compliment to Best, or a bit of smack toward Harbaugh.  Maybe it's a complimack?

Star-divide

At a preseason press conference, Stanford coach Jim Harbaugh misidentified him as a different player. Odd when you consider Best ran for over 200 yards against the Cardinal last season (perhaps Harbaugh could have identified him better from behind).

Other than that, it's a nice write up about Jahvid and Cal.

And Best’s best work comes when many Heisman voters are in their jammies.

Is it just me, or is that statement have a pretty strong condescending view towards the Heisman votors? Why didn’t she just call them cry babies?

Not cry babies. She means that the east coast time difference means they’re sleeping and don’t watch his games.

The The is above help.

Yeah, I got that. But still, there’s a form of language used that is condescending. She could have just said “long after they went to sleep” but she used something far more colorful and condescending. Heck, even if she used PJs instead of jammies. Now, it could just be that she was trying to be creative and in the end used condescending terms, but it felt more purposeful than that, to me anyway.

At least it wasn’t that they were “in their jammies and coulda won grammies!”

It’s so obviously racist and SI would never do that for Stanford. I demand an apology immediately.

Usain Bolt ruined everything

I remember first reading Best’s state-championship time in the 100 meters (10.3) thinking this kid is FAST. He certainly hasn’t disappointed on the football field, but the last two summers of Usain Bolt have made Best’s time seem almost pedestrian. Amazing.

Since Bolt never attended college, does he still have eligibility to play NCAA football? Anybody recruiting him?

I’m sure he qualifies as a professional athlete, so no.

Track is a one-dimensional sport: Speed. Although Bolt is jaw-dropping, I find Best to be a far more skilled athlete.

I’d still like to see them race, with or without pads.

I was (mostly) kidding about Bolt playing NCAA football. And is that really a rule: professional in any sport means no more NCAA eligibility? What about football players who play minor league baseball in the summer? Or is that no longer allowed?

Given the choice between seeing Best vs. Bolt on the track or on the gridiron, I’d go track. Nonetheless, given Bolt’s size, it’s hard not to imagine him someday joining an NFL training camp as a receiver. Heck, back in the day, Renaldo Nehemiah actually made the 49ers; he may have been a hurdling god, but he wasn’t nearly as big and fast and young as Bolt.

There’s a rule about scholarships, but not eligibility. Pro athletes have been college atheltes before (Chris Wineke, Jeremy Bloom) but they couldn’t play on scholarship. Or something like that. I think it’s more complicated since Bloom was getting money from endorsements and not skiing? I don’t know, nor do I want to find out.

Fastest Bear

I seem to remember Isi Sofele saying something about never being timed in the 40…but most backs are. Anyone know how we can access that list?
Some say Ross is the fastest, but, would like to see it on paper for all WR’s and RB, and DEF RB. as well,

Alex Mack mentioned in the documentary piece CSN did on him before the draft that he had never been timed in the 40. I think it’s entirely possible that nobody at Cal actually cares what the 40 times are, which makes sense to me since a player’s specific 40 time is more or less trivial.

Unless you’re at the University of Florida. There, everyone is faster than Usain Bolt.
