DBD 9.16.09 Obnoxious Fanbases
This topic has probably been discussed before, but it's always fun to bring it back up. Lisa Horne of FoxSports.com wrote up her top ten annoying, boisterous fanbases.
1. Notre Dame
2. Michigan
3. LSU
4. Oklahoma
5. Southern Cal
6. Clemson
7. Ohio State
8. Alabama
9. Florida State
10. Florida
Now, not everyone agrees with this list (whoever agrees with a list), and certain people have taken umbrage with teams left off the list. Here are what they have to say about a school we're all familiar with being left off the list
Cal: The older fans have perspective. The younger ones think Tedford is God and that they are an "Elite" program. 50 years and counting is all I got to say.
...
Cal is certainly #2 among the PAC-10 fans I’ve seen.
...
I’ve seen plenty of UCB (who the hell calls us UCB?) fans fight each other, pound hard on visitors’ cars, and spit on opposing fans.
Crap. We're being compared to Trojan fans now?
Are Cal fans as obnoxious as these people say? Who do you feel is the most obnoxious fanbase in the Pac-10 or in college football in general? Comment and vote away below.
The opinions expressed in a FanPost are, in every way, reflective of the opinions of every California Golden Blogs Marshawnthusiast. Moreover, they are reflective of every employee of SBNation, including Tyler "Blez" Bleszinski.

DJ Holt hints that they had problems adjusting to time and climate vs Maryland
From Okanes’s Tuesday night report.
Fellow linebacker D.J. Holt said the team came out "lackadaisacal" on the road last season.
"We kind of got off track going away," Holt said. "We really weren’t as focused. We’re going to be more ready this time. It’s a hostile environment so you can’t come out lackadaisacal. You have to come out like it’s a home game; treat it like a home game."
Speaking of Holt, he’s the first Cal player I’ve heard definitively say that he felt like he wasn’t rested enough going into the Maryland game last year.
"That was definitely a big factor," he said. "When we played Maryland last year, I was tired out there, kind of sluggish. They jumped on us fast, and we really weren’t ready until the fourth quarter. It was too late to come back. I felt like I didn’t have that much sleep."

Cal having trouble scheming against OOC defenses
Because of new DCs at Maryland & Minny.
The film room has not been kind to Cal’s football team so far this season.
For the second time in three games, the Bears are preparing for an opponent with a new defensive coordinator. It happened in the season opener against Maryland and is taking place again as Cal gets ready to visit Minnesota on Saturday.
Just like the opener against the Terrapins, when the Bears tried to figure out the tendencies of new defensive coordinator Don Brown, Cal is in the position of preparing for a defense without much film to study. The Gophers have played just two games under new co-defensive coordinator Kevin Cosgrove.

Tavecchio will still be kicking off against Minny
LINK
Despite his inconsistency against the Eagles, Giorgio Tavecchio will continue to handle kickoff duties.
“We’ve got to get him comfortable and consistent,” Tedford said. "You see a kick down to the two-yard line and then one to the 15.
“Hopefully the more we do it, the more success he has, the more he feels comfortable and confident in the game.”

I thought you’d like that more considering that the website there is Bare Necessities.
That said, that site is so pimp. You can coordinate your own outfits there. Unfortunately, I think its female oriented.
That said, those leggings are good, obvi you’d need to pair it with something gold. The most obvi pairing would be a gold top. But, honestly, that might be a little too matchy-matchy. Too “blue and gold.” I’ve always been interested less in the “beat you over the head with your Cal fandom” and more “Cal fandom implication.” The subtlety, if you will.
Assuming we would be sticking with those leggings on the model here, I would probably pair them with a basic gray top with a Cal-oriented logo on the front. And then a gold accessory (belt, bag, suspenders, and/or scarf).
I would like that look over, say, just having a bright gold shirt and blue leggings.

Also, although I was talking about working from a point of those leggings, the same concepts apply for when I dress myself or any other man would dress themself. Just exchange leggings for a pair of dark blue jeans and you have the same foundation to work from.

Tedford's teams no road warriors yet
It has been a seven-year problem. For all of the sweeping changes Tedford has made in revitalizing the Cal program, his teams rarely have played up to standards on the road since 2002.
He’s 35-9 in Berkeley and 19-20 as a visitor. His squads have scored five fewer points and allowed three more on the road on average, often the difference between a win and a loss, and sometimes the difference between a BCS bowl and an afterthought ranking.

Cal is basically .500 on the road in the Tedford era. Question: what is the all-time NCAA winning percentage for teams on the road? (I did a quick search but did not turn up anything.) I imagine it must be less than .500, implying that we are actually an above-average road team.
Of course, .500 is well below Tedford’s overall .667 winning percentage, and the road has been particularly unkind to us of late, but I think we need some perspective on this to make a judgment.

Rose Bowl Live
My last two experiences when Cal played Ucla here in LA have really soured me on Ucla fans.
I have plenty of long-time friends who are Ucla alumns, and when football or basketball season comes around, they can be pretty insufferable. I don’t just mean proud of their school and into a bit of playful back-and-forth, but just unbearable. There’s this strange sense of entitlement and hypocrisy about them. They behave as if others should defer to them and share their bizarre Ucla fetish simply because they are Ucla. Worse, they constantly mock any fans who talk about their team’s past success, yet will throw up Wooden without any need.
That being said, I also do know plenty of Ucla fans who are reasonable, cool, and a load of fun to hang with. Just like I know USC guys, Furds, Ducks, etc who are a blast. But when you compare obnoxious to obnoxious, Ucla comes out on top. Which is a shame, because the BN types really do soil the good guys.
Yeah, well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.

Having lived in Providence for 5 years, I object on behalf of the good people of Rhode Island – they might be off their heads, but they are not low.
For example, you’re a Trojan fan. We can forgive that. Red Sox, a little less.
The The is above help.
Based on almost no evidence whatsoever, it always seemed like the truly annoying RedSox fans were your actual Bostonians, who had more of a leg-up on being obnoxious because they were from Boston. Providence-based RedSox fans were only obnoxious if they were over-compensating for their “little brother” issues.
Be that as it may, I have no dog in this fight, I don’t follow baseball. My spite is reserved for ucla, Washington, Notre Dame, and a loooooong list of soccer teams.

I dunno, I kind of thought the over-compensating people from Rhode Island, Maine or worst of all Connecticut were more obnoxious. But the true bottom of the barrel would be the Red Sox fans from the Bay Area who decreed themselves Red Sox fans around 2003 or 2004, and then set out to prove their worthiness as fans by engaging in complete douchebaggery at the Oakland Coliseum.
Connecticut can DIAF as far as I am concerned. Most of it is just a DMZ between Manhattan suburbs and actual New England, getting in my goddam way.
As for west coast Red Sox fans of recent vintage, they deserve all the scorn they get.

Agree. It's UCLA in a landslide
I’ve spent a lifetime hating USC, and there are certainly loads of over-the-top obnoxious Trojan fans—mostly the same bandwagon crowd that supports the Lakers and has no connection whatsoever to the university. But living in SoCal for many years, I’ve begrudgingly come to actually like the ‘SC alumni base and find them, almost to a person, to be quite reasonable and respectful even when it comes to Trojan football. For a big-time program steeped in tradition, they’re remarkably grounded in reality. Maybe that’s what several years of Paul Hackett will do to you.
It’s the UCLA fans, instead, that I find insufferable, including numerous friends and family members. During basketball season, there’s a sense of entitlement typical of the fan bases of marquee programs. But football season is the worst, because Bruins fans are saddled with this tremendous chip on their shoulder vis a vis the Trojans. They think their “gutty” little team should be considered among the nation’s elite, and then they whine incessantly when the results don’t pan out.
Go Bears!

I have little experience with Cal fans, with the exception of friends (who, I guess in my opinion aren’t that obnoxious) and after last year’s UCLA/Cal game @ Cal. And they weren’t obnoxious. Personally, I’ve found USC fans who were students there aren’t quite so obnoxious as the hanger-ons. And even then, nowhere in the neighborhood of tOSU on a national scale.

Field Hockey heads to East Coast:
This Week
Following a 2-0 start to the season, the California field hockey team has lost its last two contests. The Golden Bears will leave California for the first time in 2009, heading to the East Coast for three matches. Cal (2-2, 0-1 NorPac Conference) opens the road trip at American on Friday, Sept. 18, at noon (PT), then faces Delaware on Sunday, Sept. 20, at 10 a.m. (PT) and finishes the trip on Monday, Sept. 21, at Maryland at noon (PT).
Bears Lose to Tigers in Final Minute
In the final minute of regulation, Pacific scored the game-winning goal and defeated Cal, 2-1, last Saturday in the NorPac conference opener at Pacific. Junior Natalie Nurnberg recorded the Golden Bears’ goal.
After the Tigers tallied the game’s first score in the ninth minute, Nurnberg tied the match at one just before halftime. Nurnberg dribbled up the right baseline and beat the keeper to the far right corner. She led all players with three shots. The goal was also her third of the season, and she leads the Bears in that category.
The match remained tied until the final minute of regulation when Pacific’s Katy Mcdonough tallied the gamewinner. Mcdonough received a pass down the left side after a corner and took a shot three yards from the goal.
A Look at American, Delaware and Maryland
Defending NCAA-champion Maryland is a perfect 7-0 and ranked No. 1 in the nation. Nicole Murraco leads the Terrapins with nine goals, while Katie O’Donnell has eight. As a team, Maryland has scored 40 goals, which ranks No. 1 among all NCAA teams. American is currently 3-2 after two wins last weekend over Towson and Penn State. In five games played thus far, American has scored 19 goals. Delaware’s Casey Howard leads her squad in scoring, with eight goals in five matches. Delaware is currently 3-2 this season.

New coach for Women’s Tennis:
BERKELEY – Former California women’s tennis standout Renata Kolbovic will join the Golden Bears as an assistant coach, head coach Amanda Augustus announced today (Sept. 15). Kolbovic was officially hired on Sept. 1 and comes to Berkeley by way of Tennis Canada and Tennis British Columbia where she served as a junior travel coach.
“Renata brings a wealth of experience to our program both as a player and as a coach,” said Augustus. “Her time with Tennis Canada, the national team and on the WTA tour is invaluable and will greatly enhance the level of coaching we have here at Cal. Her arrival puts us in a great position to continue to pursue our goals as individual players and as a team.”
During her time with Tennis Canada (2005-08), Kolbovic traveled to Europe for junior ITF events with the U12 boys and girls teams. She also helped coach the Tennis B.C. U16 and U18 boys and girls squads to appearances at the Canadian junior national championships.
Prior to her work with Tennis Canada, Kolbovic was the women’s tennis assistant coach at Washington from 2002-04 where she helped guide the Huskies to a No. 4 ranking and appearances in the ITA National Team Indoor Championship semifinals and the 2004 NCAA team championship quarterfinal. Kolbovic has also served as an assistant pro at the Jericho Tennis Club in Vancouver, B.C. where she worked with various high-performance junior and adult programs.
As a player, Kolbovic made a name for herself in just one semester at Cal. She won her first singles tournament at the Arizona State Invitational and teamed up with Augustus to win the doubles title at the same tourney. A week later, the tandem shocked the collegiate tennis world and became the first qualifier to win the All-American Championship doubles title. They were also the first pair of freshmen ever to claim the All-American doubles crown.

Womens golf gets 2nd at tourney:
The California Golden Bears women’s golf team placed second at the season-opening Golfweek Conference Challenge, finishing one stroke behind tournament-champion Pepperdine. Cal had moved into first place after Pia Halbig birdied 15. Pepperdine slid past Cal on the final three holes, finishing with the one stroke advantage. The Bears finished ahead of 16 other schools in the tournament that featured 18 teams from 18 different conferences. Cal, representing the Pac-10, finished with a one-stroke advantage over the third place finisher, the Southern Conference’s Chattanooga.
“We had four good looks at the hole for birdie on 18,” said Head Coach Nancy McDaniel. “None of them fell for us. Sometimes, it just doesn’t drop. Today was one of those days.”
The Bears steadily improved with each round of play at the 6,135 yard par-72 Desert Course at the Primm Valley Resort. They finished the first day in fifth place with a round of 300, the second round in second place after scoring 292, and then shaved another two strokes in the third round for a 290.
“I was very proud of how the team set themselves up to contend at the end,” said McDaniel. “They played so consistently and just really played well throughout the tournament.”
Halbig was again the top golfer for the Bears. She finished the third round with a one-under 71. She finished the tournament tied for third place after shooting even par over the 52 holes. Diane Kwon also finished in the top-ten, tying for sixth place with a +3 219, posting identical one-over 73’s in each of her rounds. Kwon got off to a very hot start in the third round, firing an eagle on the par-4 second hole, the only eagle of the tournament for a Cal player.
“I was extremely impressed with the consistency of Diane’s play” said McDaniel. She was solid and level all the way through. It was especially nice to see since these are the first three rounds she has played this month. She had been sidelined with an ankle injury and hadn’t been able to play a full round until this tournament."

VBall set for Pac10/WCC challenge:
BERKELEY – The Golden Bears look to extend their three-match winning streak as Cal plays host to Saint Mary’s College and San Francisco in the Pac-10/WCC Challenge this weekend. The Bears’ 3-1 victory over the Gaels in the Nevada Invitational remains the only loss for a Saint Mary’s squad that has since won six straight matches. The Dons have reeled off three straight wins of their own and enter the weekend as winners of four of their last six. Outside hitter Hana Cutura tacked up another impressive performance in her last two outings to garner MVP honors at the Molten/Hilton Garden Inn Classic. Cutura was joined on the all-tournament team by fellow seniors Mindi Wiley and Kristen Kathan as well as junior setter Carli Lloyd. The four team captains hope to lead the Bears to some much-needed momentum with Pac-10 conference matches looming just around the corner.
THE FACTS: The No. 13-ranked California volleyball team (5-3) hosts Saint Mary’s College (7-1) and San Francisco (5-5) in the Pac-10/WCC Challenge this weekend (Sept. 18-19) at Haas Pavilion. The Golden Bears and the Gaels will clash first in a rematch of an Aug. 29 bout that Cal won in four sets. Cal and Saint Mary’s take the court for a 7 p.m. match on Friday, Sept. 18 before the Bears take on the Dons in a 7 p.m. match on Saturday, Sept. 19. Kwotes from Tedford/Riley press conference:
Jeff Tedford
On the team’s approach to its first road game of the season following a 1-4 road record in 2008
“No different than ever. I think the teams we played on the road had something to do with us struggling on the road. Playing USC and Oregon State on the road, those are good football teams. We don’t ever do anything really different. We went to Oregon last year and beat a good Oregon team at their place, so we’re not going to do anything different as far as preparation’s concerned. We are going to travel there, because of the time of game, on Thursday and see what that’s all about, but really it’s only changing our schedule by about three hours on Thursday as far as that’s concerned.”
On when the decision was made, and why, to the travel to Minnesota on Thursday
“This summer, as we were thinking about things – kind of sit down, put together a timeline on what it would be, what a day would look like, what the schedule would look like – and felt like, we’ll see. You don’t have anything to compare it to unless you try it. Our emphasis has really been, fly in there, practice, do the same thing we do at the hotel, get up and play, and that’s it. That’s what we’ve always done. There’s going to be more time now. Maybe if we feel rushed because it’s an early morning game or something like that, but the body clock and chemistry, as far as an early game, I don’t think had anything to do with it. I still don’t. But maybe it’s the rush of getting there and hurrying up, and going and going and going, and not having any time to just relax for a second. We’ll see. I don’t want to be hard-headed about it. We’ll do it, and then we’ll have something to compare it to and figure out which way is the best.”
On Minnesota’s leading receiver, Eric Decker
“Good player, big, physical player. Really strong to the ball, great range, great hands, competes hard for the football, can run. Really good player.”
On whether the defensive game plan will give Syd’Quan Thompson the primary assignment on Decker
“I haven’t got that far yet. Coach Gregory will, I’m sure, come up with a plan that way depending on whether you’re in zone or man. We’re not just going to do one thing – we never do. It’s just a matter of what coverages we have going on.”

I think the teams we played on the road had something to do with us struggling on the road.
Give Tedford a cookie. Analyzing the stats is wonderful, but the real reason we haven’t won a competitive road game since Oregon ‘07 probably has a lot to do with the fact that we weren’t the best team on the field in most of those road games.

Raise your hand if you’re counting the days ’til the NCAA hammers the Trojans with sanctions so bad that Tommy Trojan falls on his sword and takes that mind-numbing band and those spoiled “V”-fingered fans with him. Forcing Traveler to listen to “Conquest” 50 times a Saturday should qualify as animal cruelty. Someone call PETA. – Lisa Horne
Other than mentioning her annoyance with the V for victory thing, she never actually explains why USC fans are annoying. The article is already pretty cookie cutter – now she’s not even justifying her rankings. LAME
As for Cal, it’s all about visibility. Nobody complains about ASU, Arizona, WSU or Stanford fans because they hardly hear from them. I’m sure nobody gave a damn about Cal fans back during the Holmoecaust. Now we’re good again and people have reasons to start complaining.
Fan base bashing is one of the lowest forms of internet arguments. Half the time it’s a lame attempt to make a loss seem better. “Well, we lost to that team, but at least our fans aren’t a bunch of classless thugs!” Which ignores similar behavior in their own fanbase.
Any time a team gets a fanbase beyond alums (i.e. any time a team is successful and ranked) their are going to be asshats who do stupid things.

I’ve seen plenty of UCB (who the hell calls us UCB?) fans fight each other, pound hard on visitors’ cars, and spit on opposing fans.
I find it difficult to believe anyone could actually go to a Cal football game and still think we’re called “UCB”. So I suspect this person is talking out their ass. There are plenty of whiny and fair-weather Cal fans, but not that many belligerent ones.

The far west end of the dirt lot / meadow (seasonal) has both campsites and an RV lot. Many have never ventured that far out. Hippie Cali students tend to congregate in the surrounding woods drinking “calshine” (DC Trojan: this is powerful moonshine made from fermented hemp rope). They are the ones spray-painting the penises on the visiting RVs. Don’t ask me how I know this or who I am. Lots of fights out there, some visiting fans never even make it into the game due to the violence.

Fun note from Ted Miller:
Tennessee has an interim president named Jan Simek.
Simek sat down with the editorial board with the Chattanooga Times Free Press.
He talked about UCLA’s win over Tennessee on Saturday.
He talked about Volunteers coach Lane Kiffin’s conduct and tendency to perhaps talk more than he should.
Then he said this:
“Lane comes from the Pac-10, which in many respects is the epitome of great academics and great athletics, as this past weekend showed on several different levels, including to us. When we lost to UCLA, we lost to a better academic institution, too.”
Odds are that will go down smooth in Westwood. Not so much in Knoxville.

public universities, yeah. I’d put Duke, Vandy and Emory ahead of UCLA for sure.
Does not compute. Since when are these three unis public … or is my understanding just way wrong?
Mark it "8", Dude.
My poor sentence structure led to this.
As far as public universities, UCLA outshines anything in the south aside from possibly Texas or TAMU for agricultural businesses. Possibly North Carolina for … I dunno, something.
As far as private universities, I’d put Duke, Vandy, and Emory ahead of UCLA. This is based upon having lived on the West Coast for many years, and also having lived in the South for many years. Therefore I know people who have gone to both and am in general somewhat familiar with both sides.
I’d say we should consult US News & World Report (which obviously underrates public schools, but still serves as a useful guideline) to answer this one.
And just like Bernie, me and my baby made off.
The campus minister who was at Cal’s Newman Hall the past four years just got transferred to Knoxville and was amused that when he was talking to the people there, they were excited about being ranked the 106th best university in the country, 52nd best public university. Cal is ranked 21st overall, 1st in public universities. Big shift.

The fact that they rank WUSTL and Rice ahead of us shows that their rankings are biased in favor of private schools, which in turn indicates that said rankings may not be a useful metric for evaluating where UCLA stands relative to Emory or Vandy.

BruinsNation Is Insane
Shame On LA Times: Newspaper Posts Racially Charged “Line Up” Photos Of UCLA Football Players
Star-divide
Three paragraphs back, I asked you to take “race” out of you interpretation of the pictures.
Unfortunately, in our society we have not reached a point where we are, in fact, race neutral.
Instead of moving us farther down the egalitarian path, the election of our first Black President has made more visible some of the latent racial hatred that we have yet to eliminate.
I do not play the race card lightly. Read my body of work here. And, know my life. I have never used race or difference as a way of justifying disparate treatment.
But, at the same time, I have to question why the Slimes chose to present these four Black athletes in this “line-up” manner when they have NEVER done it before with the white athletes at sc.Or here. Or anywhere. Do you recall a similar picture gallery of the sc players who posted and maintained that hateful website?
They chose to give the pictures an interpretation that does not fit the story.
How can I say that?
Because, no one knows what the story is. No one accept CRN, the coaches, the team and the AD. The alleged offenses have never been made public. What little we know is that there are no public reports of criminal activity. That CRN acted quickly and decisively. And, that those of the four who have spoken out have taken responsibility for what they did.

They are trying to say that these photos were used and are racist because they are threatening and menacing:

Now, look, I’m not a white person, so maybe I’m not the bestperson to pass judgment here. I am a person of color. If Hebrew is a color. Which I’m pretty sure it is. It’s green.
But who is intimidated by these photos? The dude in the lower right hand corner looks like he is mentally slow and just finished a great finger painting. The guy in the upper right hand corner seems to be focusing on something off camera that confuses him greatly. The guy in the upper left hand seems slightly awkward. And the dude in the lower right appears constipated.

I think they actually have a small point: The pictures are definitely less flattering than the official team pictures and it might have been a conscious choice of the paper to use them instead of the nice pictures since these players have broken a rule.
But as usual Bruin Nation so completely overreacts and blows it out of proportion that they come across as crazy. There’s something to say for a measured, calm response in reaction to something that bothers you and it’s something you very rarely see at BN.

KNBR calls Cal fans "wusses"
I was listening to KNBR this morning and apparently Murph and Mac had Pat Hill on as a guest. Pat Hill used his interview to implore Cal to play Fresno State. Both Murph and Mac agreed that it made sense for Cal to play Fresno State.
A little later, a Cal fan emailed Murph and Mac and the email was read over the air. Basically what the email said was that the reason Cal will never play Fresno State is because the last time Cal played them in Fresno, Cal fans were spit on, verbally assaulted, thrown bottles at and their car windows broken into.
Murph and Mac basically said that this was a lame excuse, that its not possible that any of this happened, and then called Cal fans “wussies.”
Their email is: MurphandMac@knbr.com

You need to write more inefficient code. Better still, code that doesn’t work at all. Toss some recursive functions in there.

That’s hilarious.
What does this line do:
*p++ = 0;
Is it just incrementing the pointer? Why would that lead to overflow?

It’s setting whatever the pointer p points to zero and then incrementing the pointer to the next spot.
It’s overflow because back in the day from when the story is about ints were 16bit.

Damn, BI had a thread on obnoxius Pac-10 fanbases too! Consensus seems to be UCLA
The worst thing I have experienced out of about 5 Cal trips to the Rose Bowl was some so-so wine at UCLA tailgates, even while being a very vocal fan sitting in baby blue territory. I don’t get the hate towards the southern branch here. Is that due mostly to the internet interactions through BRO?
I’ve got to go with Oregon based on their student section’s vicious attack on Leon Powe a few years back at Mack Court, with the “your house’s on fire” yells, talk about an all-time low.
I live in a USC enclave and they are obnoxious all year long. Plus it’s not even generational. The old men with the Cardinal Caddies and Cardinal and Gold golf outfits are just too precious.
No way. Go to the L.A. Coliseum and see how many obnoxious USC fans show their faces…and they didn’t even GO to the school.
U OF A
U OF A
U OF A
ugh
Oregon has to at least be in the discussion. The fans at the stadium are tame compared to others, but the fan base as a whole is as obnoxious as it gets: delusional, annoying, braggadocios, arrogant, with the worst sense of football entitlement around. All this without any tradition of winning to speak of. They make me alternate between wanting to puke and wanting to fight. 9/29/07 was one of the best days of my life, and certainly my most proud day as a Golden Bear.
i’ll list them in order:
1. fucla2. fucla
3. fucla
4. huskies
5. farm boys
6. sc
7. fucla
8. fucla
9. fucla
10. fucla
I agree that over my decades of experience, bruin fans have been the worst…beginning with bruin frat boys strolling up Channing above College, in the middle of the street on Friday before a game, telling Cal students to get the hell out of their way – this was THEIR campus for the weekend…to a post graduate experience coming in the back of the Durant after a loss to the bruins — having two middle age bruin couples shove my wife out of the way so they could enter the elevator there ahead of us…“spoils of victory” one of the a**holes said… As I was 15 years younger than both of them my wife (an SC grad herself) said as I caught up to the group, “I’d like you to take them apart, and you could, but I don’t want us to get sued”…to countless experiences in the Rose Bowl with their incessantly snotty enititlement whining… I stopped going to Pauley years and years ago because of the way they bleed condescension and put downs….
All that said, CAL fans are not immune from criticism. Among my closest friends are parents of an SC song girl who was treated miserably at CAL…(yes, both the parents and the girl). Since when is it OK to spit on song girls from any school… I know personally that this one went on to a two year stint for Teach America in Harlem and then to get her social welfare masters… – not exactly the stereotype Cal-types love to hate…while her parents are routinely bathed with noxious profanity and threatened when they simply sit in the Cal alumni section at Cal-SC games in Berkeley.
Fucla is the most obnoxious for both. I will never forget walking out of the RB in 2007, and being accosted by three little kids in oh-so-pretty baby blue (), using the most foul language I’ve ever heard anyone use, much less near-infants. Then there was their parents, just laughing it up.
I have to put in a vote for ASU fans. Most games are in the evening which allows for more lubrication at game time. For years ASU was the only game in town so you had many “fans” that were not grads. They not only yell and swear at women and children, they throw things. We were in the middle of the Cal section in 2007 and were continually barraged by trash through much of the game. When they weren’t throwing trash at us they were throwing F-bombs. Nice.
On the other hand, $c fans as a general rule are the most hateful, arrogant obnoxious and classless fans I have ever encountered with the possible exception of Fresneck State. (My brother now refuses to ever go to $c fora game). I have been insulted, bumped, spit on and challenged to fights on a semi-regular basis at $c often in the presence of my two boys both still under 10. $c is hands down the poorest losers and worst winners of any college team fan base. IMHO.
Amen! UCLA fans, hands down, are the absolute worst. Arrogant in basketball, just jerkoffs in football. If they lose, they’re a little bit better. When they win, they’re completely insufferable. (Oregon seems to be the other way around…although I must confess that I’m basing that off of our wins in ’06 and ’07)
Cal Band was marching out of the Rose Bowl in ‘05 and I’ll never forget some of the particularly nasty things being said, calling some of the band people “fat pigs and whores” and just generally being @ssholes. And they won!!! Way to be classy, guys. My dad refuses to go to any more games at the Rose Bowl because he just doesn’t want to put up with those fans anymore.
By contrast, the only time I’ve had issues with $C was back in 2003…I remember some 4-year-old kid shouting “F#CK CAL!” while we marched by…I think $C traveling fans may be bad, but UCLA fans are systemically bad.
USC fans are f-ing morons.
At last year’s Cal-USC game I was walking into the Coliseum with my girlfriend while this older Condom about 60 years old was walking in with his wife and what I assumed were his two young grandchildren all clad in SC gear. He looks at me as I walk past him and was like, “The bears huh…” in a smug voice. All i said was “Yeah… Cal bears” (I didn’t know wtf to reply to that, lol). Then he goes “The bears ****en suck” right in front of his two 5 year old grandkids, what an idiot. I just paused turned around and replied “Nice respect you have for your family there sir, maybe those kids will grow up to go to USC and be complete morons like you.” The old dry condom looked astonished at the response as I proceeded to roll on into the stadium.
I had fucla fans take bats to my car (2005). This was after they won. I can’t imagine what it would have been like if they had lost. Granted, it has a few Cal stickers and a license plate frame, but there have definitely been times where I feared for my safety.
In my opinion, they deserve every ounce of scorn that is present in this thread. fucla fans truly are the scum of the earth.
the 2004 sc-cal game was particurally bad, but after they stopped selling booze in the stadium it hasn’t been bad at all IMO. if anything they have been downright pleasant. UCLA on the other hand was horrible the last two times i went there. i had a women berate me holding her 4 year olds hand. I had a guy pour a beer in my car because i had my window down while stuck in traffic getting out of the golf course. and that has been the tip of the iceburg. my gf refuses to go back and i’m taking this year off.

Good Mandel mailbag today
Tackling the Pac-10’s good play so far, and the early anointing of Matt Barkley here.
Looking at the first two weeks of this season, however, I would contend no conference has performed better than the Pac-10. The league boasts the best record (6-2) so far against the five other BCS leagues and the Mountain West and has largely avoided bad losses (with the exception of Oregon’s poor showing at Boise State). If the league can pull off a couple more wins this weekend — like Oregon State against Cincinnati or Arizona (which previously shut down Central Michigan) at Iowa — it’s going to be pretty tough for anyone from the SEC, Big 12 or elsewhere to argue with that record.
But of course, should Pac-10 teams lose more games than they win, or should UCLA (against Kansas State) or Stanford (against San Jose State), suffer a bad loss, it’s easy to predict the reaction. The Pac-10 stinks. USC doesn’t play anyone. Which is why, at the end of the day, the one surefire way for a conference to preserve its reputation is to schedule Troy and Charleston Southern.
Stewart: Why so much praise for Matt Barkley? Did the sportswriters even watch the USC-OSU game? I realize he was behind center for the winning drive, but 1) most of the credit for that drive should go to Joe McKnight and 2) for the game, Barkley was 15-of-31 passing for 195 yards, zero touchdowns and one interception. What did I miss?
— B. Jones, Bloomfield Hills, Mich.
First of all, I don’t think I’ve ever received such a barrage of outrage over such an innocuous column as I did for my Barkley piece last week. Note to self: If you choose to invoke the name of Joe Montana, be prepared to face the consequences. That said, I wasn’t on some mission to prop up Barkley “after just one game.” Truth be told, I didn’t even see the San Jose State game. Barkley became a story the day Pete Carroll named him a true-freshman starter.
So, call it “overhyping” if you’d like, but I’ve been around a lot of college quarterbacks, including a lot of very timid freshmen and sophomores, and Barkley carries himself more like a junior or senior. He’s got a swagger to him, and coaches want that in a starting quarterback.

Does anyone know where I can find out more about Nestor? His exaggerated sports blogger parody is hilarious and I want to know more about the comic genius behind the character.
Nestor wrote (to bruintarheel):
Uh don’t try to play dumb
You wrote: Similar Basketball first, Football second mentality.
That is essentially arguing that UCLA is a "basketball school" similar to UNC. It’s not and I am not going to get into a back and forth on this because we have established pretty clearly that UCLA is not just a basketball school. We are not going to rediscuss hashed out issues here on BN.
You also then went on to imply that somehow UNC’s football tradition matches that of UCLA, which also is nonsense (and you can browse through links of numerous posts on UCLA’s historical place in college football and where UNC fits in contrast).
And I am saying UCLA football is just as popular as UCLA basketball within hardcore Bruin fans. It’s pretty easy to make that argument if you take the metrics of fan interest here on BN and other major UCLA online communities.
It is clear you don’t really have a good sense of the zeitgeist of UCLA fans … because you are too wrapped up splitting your loyalties between our Bruins and your Tarheels.
This blog is not exactly for you if you want to come here to argue that there is debate whether UCLA basketball program is better than Roy Boy’s UNC.

But at some point, does ANY history matter at all when it comes to sports? Tradition is all fine and well (and admittedly it’s kinda nice that Wooden and all is attributed to my alma mater) but let’s not kid ourselves – we’re cheering for today’s team, not some team from 30 years ago, or even last season’s. When your team loses, history ain’t gonna make it all better.
I clearly don’t enjoy ESPN Classic.
Go Bruins!
UCLA is pretty much 30 years, save one fluky year in the 90s.
To be technical, it’s actually much closer to 40 years. But then again, that’s the point, isn’t it? No offense to our visiting Bruins, but too many Uclans (particularly over at BN) seem to think that the events of the past are still completely relevent today, but only for them. If others bring up accomplishments decades old, they’re called out for living in the past.

Here is the trick with getting into the Cal game if you cannot get tickets.
1) Wear your SC gear under some other clothes so they don’t know you are an SC fan
2)Go to one of the exit gates at the stadium where there is only one person attending it.
3) Bribe the attendent ($20 per person always works for me) to let you in. This has never failed to work
4) Find seats and then take offer your clothes to reveal you are on SC fan
5) If you cannot make it work, go to Henry’s bar, drink a lot of keg beer and get into a fight with Cal fans. This is almost as fun as going into the game (more fun if you win the fight and don’t get arrested).
In other news, according to that same post, we’ll have 35 million USC fans in Berkeley.

I'm surprised by my fellow history buffs here on CGB
I’ve mentioned this book a couple times, and as I get closed to finishing it, I wish someone else would express interest in it. Its been a fascinating and quick read, about the Barbary Coast, and various misadventures in American diplomacy and warfare. It tells/implies a lot about the way our country was founded and why our government continues to act the way it does to advance its agenda internationally.

Is it interesting?
I’m enjoying the early American history lately. I’m curious to read some of the other historical accounts of the 1801-1812 period to see how they conflict and how different authors put different spins on the same events.
Question, how do they collect so much info? Is it from diaries and letters that have been kept in families’ possession all these years?

Hey Rishi
Say what you want about Hill, but he is 8-3 as a starter. Hill is a gamer.

I miss Fire Joe Morgan – They eviscerated bad baseball writing better than the deadspin guy. But still, a solid beat-down. I give it a 7

Uh. They are the Deadspin guy in this case. They took it over for a day.

I had no idea we’re an autocomplete option in Google. Of course, you have to type “California Golden Blog” because it tries to fill in that last s for you, but it’s a start.
