Grade the Bears: Cal-EWU Postgame Thread

Welcome to the postgame thread. Hopefully things have not gone terribly wrong, and you're basking in the glow of another Cal victory. If not...just don't break things while you're here, okay?

Same as last week; you get your chance to grade Cal's performance! Provide an alias (if you submitted something last week, provide the same alias) Grades are mandatory, additional thoughts are optional; the best will be included in the report card post Tuesday/Wednesday. Click here for the link, or you should be able to see the form on your browser after the jump.

CBKWit will have his immediate postgame thoughts up tonight or tomorrow morning. Until then, talk about the game or discuss the other big games going on tonight, including USC-Ohio State and Purdue-Oregon.

Dude, Riley did a one hopper to Best today. Riley was getting sacked so he threw the ball vaguely in Bests direction. It must have not been a forward lateral. I guess a fumble. Anyway Best grabs it and then weaves through traffic for like 25 yards.

Cal Beats USC Oct 3

Cal has as good a defense as Ohio State. The difference is that OS was really SLOW to the hole on almost every run play up the middle and really slow to the edge. I say they trade positions with OS Sun. afternoon. Today’s effort against EW is B+!

by hrlincon on Sep 12, 2009 8:35 PM PDT reply actions

I’m convinced Barkley will throw interceptions, at least three, IF Cal’s defense can contain Joe McKnight et al. and IF Cal’s defense can generate a decent pass rush.

Then the challenge simply becomes Cal’s offense (and special teams) not turning the ball over in kind.

Go Bears!

I don’t think so in either case – I suspect it draws a certain kind of person.

They used to use basketball season to thin the herd of prospective Song Girls down to football season squad. Since not many people went to SC basketball games that meant you could end up near the coaches as they were assessing the various candidates. A couple of my buddies claim that they heard the following judgment: “She’s a good dancer and has the right attitude, but her tits are just too big.”

I suspect that this is complete crap.

Things I am hoping are true:

#1: Tennessee’s offense sucks
#2: LSU is massively overrated.
#3: ASU still has no offensive line and Jordan and Alualu feast on delicious Sun Devil QB flesh.

I think that you’re pretty safe on item 1 as long as Crompton is in the mix.

Last week I had a guy in our New Orleans office tell me that there was nothing to worry about for LSU because they were being deliberately vanilla to avoid showing anything to conference rivals. If that’s true, pretty ballsy to do it 2 weeks in a row?

by DC Trojan on Sep 12, 2009 10:26 PM PDT up reply actions

otoh, they only outscored a FCS team 2:1. Dunno what conclusion to draw from that.

Missing that XP

If OrSt lost another road game because of a missed XP…wow, I think Mike Riley might want to consult an oracle or something.

I had a friend who was a kicker on Vanderbilt’s football team. He watched Alexis Serna miss 3 XPs en route to losing @LSU in 2004 and made the hilarious comment that if he were that kicker, he would jump out of the plane on the way home. Serna clearly disregarded that advice and decided a better redemption would be winning the Lou Groza award 2 years later.

Yeah, I mean it's not like we're a Top-10 team or something

But Comcast probably doesn’t give them any love with the footage.

Where can I get a bit torrent of the Cal-EWU game? I don’t get comcast and want to see some replays I couldn’t see live.

We desperately need a JumboTron upgrade at Memorial

Q: Where do you go for post-game analysis (besides here) on Cal games?

I think the .avi file was up Sunday of last week, but the .iso is worth waiting for since it’s a higher quality video.

I like to see what Ted Miller and JO say about the Cal games (especially since they get into press conferences), but nothing beats the coverage/analysis on CGB.

Software for .iso file, and how to make a DVD?

I haven’t burned anything to DVD in ages.

What software would you use on Mac OS X 10.5 (or 10.6) to convert the .iso file I’m getting off the Torrent, into a usable DVD I can put into a player?

Anyone willing to give me the procedure so I don’t make any coasters?

by JerrottWillard45 on Sep 14, 2009 11:54 PM PDT up reply actions

I got it all to work

Just used Disk Utility to burn the .iso file to a standard DVD-R blank. Easy! Sweet! And he cut out all the commercials for us! A hero among men.

It works in my DVD player hooked to my TV (though it won’t play in DVD Player app on my Mac) – and I can now confirm that:

A) It was a lateral to Best, not a forward pass. Easy call after the replay.

B) The officials made a number of minor errors – naming the wrong player for the infraction (Alualu got tagged for an Uwusu offsides, for example), and perhaps a couple of bad calls – Offensive PI against EWU late…was it something off camera? b/c the ball wasn’t in the air, and the contact was minimal, after a jam on the line…

C) There is no way to tell from the broadcast if Boateng’s elbow hit the ground when he fell on his tackler, then got up and ran it in.

D) This space intentionally left blank.

by JerrottWillard45 on Sep 16, 2009 10:21 AM PDT up reply actions

My next questions is… if you/anyone DVD’s the season, who’d be willing to sell a brother a set? I’d love to start collecting seasons to be able to just pop in the player and just watch. I am pretty sure people have all of last season as well.

The ISO’s are large and I don’t have a DVD player. Can I haz DVDz plz?

by CaliforniaCMB on Sep 16, 2009 11:47 AM PDT up reply actions   1 recs

I assume you mean you don't have a DVD burner (not player)

’Cause otherwise, what are going to do with those DVDs?

Twist, don’t answer that!

by JerrottWillard45 on Sep 16, 2009 3:02 PM PDT up reply actions

I don't want to rewatch last season...

But I’ll try to make a complete 2009 set, if other people keep putting torrents up of the .iso files.

They have the Oregon @ Cal 1993 game (which I think is the one where we come back from 30 points down), which I attended in person, and I just burned it and plan to watch it tonight – for the first time since I was there!

Stand the whole game, stay to the end, and start yelling while they're still in the huddle. GO BEARS

by JerrottWillard45 on Sep 16, 2009 3:06 PM PDT up reply actions

And I wouldn't sell it to you...

‘cause then I’d be making a commercial gain on torrented commercial streams which I’m not the copyright owner of.

But maybe for the cost of shipping and DVD blanks…we could hook up.

Okay

Even with Furd’s loss, about which all can remain divided, pretty good day on the road for the Pac-10. USC, UCLA, OrSt win. Washington breaks the streak. Arizona handles its business in the ugliest manner possible, ASU doesn’t play, and WSU hopes that the bad man will stop.

I have no idea if Paul Wulff is the guy

But, if he is the guy, and he’s got a good plan, WSU needs to give him a lot of time. It worked for Arizona, and it’s working at Vanderbilt too. I seriously doubted Bobby Johnson when he went 2-10 his first three seasons at Vandy, but almost all of that was spent upgrading talent and depth. Losses became slightly less lopsided. Then, all of a sudden, they go 5-6, 4-8, 5-6, 7-6, and in their 2009 class actually pull down some legitimate 3* prospects who are contributing immediately. That, if slightly less steep, is the type of curve WSU is on.

I hope they can follow it.
