Cal Bears in the Pros: NFL Week 1 Open Thread
Haven't been updating these pro threads as of late, but I assume most of us will be watching tonight's action. The Hawk will be the third receiver tonight, but don't expect many throws his way since the Titans run the ball a lot more than they pass. This thread is for general NFL Week 1 discussion, Cal Bears in the NFL, fantasy football, etc.
Here's a list of Bears in the NFL.
Perusing through it, you might notice no Follett or Ta'ufo'ou. Well...
Paul Lukas of ESPN: "No uni changes for the Bears, but it's worth noting that they recently demoted rookie fullback Will Ta'ufo'ou to the practice squad, which unfortunately means we won't be seeing this amazing nameplate on the field, at least for now."
Follett will also be on the practice squad: "The Detroit Lions announced on Sunday that three rookie seventh-round draft choices -- tight end Dan Gronkowski, tackle Lydon Murtha and linebacker Zack Follett -- were all signed to Detroit's practice squad."
Expect to see Craig Stevens to be featured mainly in Titans special teams.
Surprisingly, while Follett and Ta'ufo'ou are headed to the practice squads, Morrah made the cut: "I didn't see much from Morrah, so Seattle must be convinced he is too good to cut. Interesting talent Seattle will let mature, but if a starting tight end goes down, I don't think Morrah is ready to contribute."
Desmond Bishop will not start the opener, but he might be used plenty in nickle packages.
Dante Hughes was cut by the Colts. He sadly couldn't live up to the promise he showed at Cal.
Brandon Mebane continues to scare everyone.
Field Gulls on Forsett: "Forsett isn't a one cut and go guy. He looked best last preseason running behind Owen Schmitt. He has good quickness, lateral quickness and very good vision. He's probably more of a picker than a slasher. As I said when Seattle drafted him, he has some chance to stick in the NFL. I think he maxes at league average, but that wouldn't be too bad. Seattle needs functioning depth behind Jones and that could be Forsett. That's still a ways from being established."
Alex Mack could start the season opener.
Thomas Decoud will be starting at free safety against the Dolphins.
Might've missed some other news, feel free to leave it in the comments!
Note: There might be an Aaron Rodgers Open Thread for Sunday Night Football, based on how you vote in the poll!

Money makes DeSean go 'round
Just when I thought he had turned a corner. In the off-season, he was saying all the right things and I was thinking he was more of a team guy. But hey, he’s on my fantasy team, so I guess I don’t really care how he’s motivated as long as he produces. Except that I do. Le sigh.
[Jackson] ended up catching a team-high 62 passes as a rookie, and after missing out on a big first-round signing, he’s focused on playing well enough to earn a lucrative second deal. “Money motivates everybody,” he said. “I’m trying to set myself up for my second contract. I’m a starter that wasn’t drafted in the first round, but that’s cool. The best thing I can do is to set myself up for the long run in this league.”

To be fair, in the NFL, you’re always fighting for your next contract.

True, and I’m not hating on him for that. You never know when you’re gonna get injured or what might happen, so you’ve always gotta be conscious of your money – I got no problem with that.
But it’s one thing to keep in your mind, it’s quite another to just come out and say that’s why you play. Sometimes for teams, it’s not just sheer ability, but a ‘team-first’ attitude that can add a few zeros to that contract. You can have all the ability in the world, but there are clear (albeit extreme) examples of how attitude >cough< T.O. >cough< can cost you. I’m not saying that’s gonna happen to DeSean, but it would have been nice to see a positive attitude shift.

I really haven’t seen proof of a team-first attitude adding value to your contract.

Pro: He’s honest.
Con: He’s still MeSean.
Verdict: I don’t hate him, but it’s hard to love him.
So, basically, you gotta Go Bears!

so after the first drive
Mack looks pretty good, just the one mess up on the blitz(witch Quinn made a great play for a big gain). Hes playing against a really good d line and getting good drive off the ball.
GO ALEX, make us proud!

End of the Bengals-Denver game was jujst crazy. Bengals up 7-6 with about 20 seconds left. Denver has the ball on its own 15. So, they have to go abillion yards.
Orton throws it about 15 yards down the field. Bengals D player tips it up. Brandon F’N Stokely (not the inteded receiver) grabs the ball in mid air after the tip and runs like 70 yards for the TD. To waste time, at the end he runs horizontally across the field at the 1. INSANE!
