Golden Bears in the Pros: NFL Preseason Thread
via cdn.picapp.com
A lot of Bears will be in action this preseason, vying for roster spots or trying out to make the 53 man cut (and at the very least, the practice squad). Here is a list of Bears in the NFL, and here is the NFL Preseason schedule. Feel free to post stream links in the comments to any games you're watching to follow the Golden Bear action! The Hall of Fame game should see Lavelle Hawkins, Craig Stevens and Marshawn all in action tonight, follow it here!
We've given each athlete their own comment thread, so if you can, try and post stories and links to that player in those threads. Click on the comments to find out what's going on with your Golden Bear pros!
Some pretty tame guidelines after the jump.
There has been an ongoing discussion of whether to treat these threads like a DBD or not. Although we definitely would like for it to go this way, some stories just aren't really interesting to Cal/Bay Area fans in general, and posting such stories can crowd out the discussion CGB is trying to foster. So we've created these guidelines for commenters to follow in terms of posting links on this thread.
Single stories that can be posted on their own
*Big stories, like ESPN frontpage news or anything you might see on PTI/Sportscenter.
*Stories on the Niners and the Raiders (since this is a Bay Area-focused site and most of our readers are from NorCal).
*Stories on Cal Bears alum (if you can, please rec these stories so they stand out).
Minor stories which can be bunched together
*Signings/waivers/trades of non-Niners/Raiders/star players, there are a thousand waivers and signings and I doubt anyone here cares much about them.
The opinions expressed in a FanPost are, in every way, reflective of the opinions of every California Golden Blogs Marshawnthusiast. Moreover, they are reflective of every employee of SBNation, including Tyler "Blez" Bleszinski.

Alex Mack--Cleveland Browns
Dawgs by Nature has the breakdown.
Enter rookie Alex Mack out of California. We tried a center once in the first round (Jeff Faine) an had decent results. With Mack, we don’t need him to be a Pro Bowler — just the stable presence that Fraley was starting to lack. In fairness to Fraley, Mangini is not going to award Mack the starting job right away. And, with all rookies, the possibility always exists that it takes a longer time to adjust to the NFL; not everyone can do it as well as Thomas did. In other words, Mack isn’t a guarantee to start Week 1; but I believe he will.
If you missed them or would like to look back, here are two very good pieces we featured on Mack shortly after he was drafted back in April:

Mack practicing at guard
It was unusual to see Joe Thomas absent from the field this morning. No worries for our star left tackle though — apparently he received a non-transferable “day off from practice” card for exceptional work in offseason conditioning programs. Thomas cashed in this morning. It actually gave Mangini the opportunity to move some players around for experience purposes. Eric Steinbach worked at left tackle while Alex Mack worked at left guard and Hank Fraley worked at center for the first team.

And it seems he's improving as camp goes along
Slowly Progressing? Rapid Reports suggests that the number of mistakes in practice are starting to go down for first-round center Alex Mack. Either way, Hank Fraley looks to be a roster lock at this point.

Mack battling Fraley for the starting center role, could be decided tonight.
Heading into the dress-rehearsal game Saturday night against Tennessee at Cleveland Browns Stadium, the Browns are still deciding between 2009 first-round pick Alex Mack and incumbent Hank Fraley at center. Fraley started in Green Bay and alternated series with Mack, and it was vice versa against Detroit.
Question is, will the rookie – and 21st overall pick – be ready for full-time duty come Sept. 13 against the Vikings?
“We’ll see,” coach Eric Mangini said. “I thought we saw some good steps from [Mack] the second game, not that he played poorly in the first game, but some things that, maybe some of the finer points, we started seeing a little bit this past game, which was nice.”
Mangini is also encouraged that Mack is running far fewer penalty laps now than he did the first few weeks of camp. “He’s a well-conditioned athlete right now,” Mangini joked.
Saturday night’s game – against a Titans defense that surrendered the second-fewest points in the NFL last season – may determine if Mack can handle the starting job.
“Every game has been a big game,” said Mack. “We have two more weeks before the first game, so it just comes down to getting better every day. That’s all I’m really concerned about. I think the coaches are smart and they’ll use whoever they need to win games.”
Despite not having injured nose tackle Shaun Rogers to go up against the past few weeks, Mack appears to have made great strides since the start of camp.
“I think it’s gone pretty well,” Mack said. “I think I got better over the whole course of the thing. Luckily I’ve come through it without being hurt or anything. I’m better than I was when I entered, so that’s kind of the thing that you look for.”
Fraley, the Browns’ starting center the past three seasons and a 10th-year pro, has been instrumental in helping Mack learn the game. Fraley’s also worked at both guard spots.

Aaron Rodgers--Green Bay Packers

Acme Packing Company knows who the most important player is to the Packers this year.
In probably the least surprising development of the off-season, QB Aaron Rodgers enters the 2009 season as the most important player on the team.
In one way he might be less important in 2009 than he was in 2008. If he had gotten hurt and they would have been forced to start QB Matt Flynn instead, then they would have had no chance of winning. Flynn wasn’t ready last season. Actually I’m still not sure he’s ready, although I think he’ll be a solid backup QB soon.
A 64% completion percentage in his first season as a starter is very good, but his passes always seem to be in the right place. His accuracy is exceptional. Most of his incompletions/interceptions seem to be due to a good play on defense or a missed catch by a receiver. I’m a huge fan of his accuracy while scrambling or on a called bootleg too.
He already seems like he’s comfortable as a team leader and good at it. It appears that he has a complete understanding of the playbook and that his teammates have confidence in him.

http://myespn.go.com/blogs/nflnation/0-10-290/Aaron-Rodgers-and-the-value-of-experience.html
As Cutler works to learn the nuances of his receivers and Favre attempts to learn the names of his, Rodgers quietly has taken his development to the highest levels. He has a 142.3 preseason passer rating, having converted three of his 19 passes for touchdowns. But more importantly, Rodgers has proved to be a case study in the benefits of knowing your receivers.
Both of his touchdown passes to receiver Donald Driver, for instance, required adjustments that wouldn’t have occurred if Rodgers didn’t know how Driver would react to the coverage and situation.
Rodgers: “The communication has been definitely the best that it’s been the past two years that I’ve been playing. Just come off on the sidelines, and Greg [Jennings] coming over, Donald coming over, and having some real good dialogue about what they’re seeing out there. Just the confidence that they have in myself, and the confidence I have in them when they tell me, ‘Hey, I saw this out there. If we come back to this play, think about this.’ It just gives you the confidence that we’re on the same page. I think we’re getting real close.”

Some people are reallllllly high on Aaron
How special? “I think he might be one of the two or three best quarterbacks under 30, and there are some good ones in that group,” the executive said. “I’d take him before [Jay] Cutler, who went to a Pro Bowl last year. Give him another season and I might even take him before Eli [Manning]. And that’s a 100-million-dollar guy with a [Super Bowl] ring – good company.” That’s a rapid ascent for a player who is only heading into his second starting campaign. However, Rodgers has wasted no time refining his game and defining his image, something that might be even more impressive considering it comes in the NFL cradle of Green Bay. What was once a fiefdom lorded over solely by his predecessor, Brett Favre(notes), Rodgers has finally gained the embrace of the community and fan base. That might only make this preseason even sweeter, with Favre’s moniker dangerously close to becoming “He Who Shall Not Be Named If He Plays In Minnesota.”

The Daily Cal interviews Aaron!
Here’s a snippet. Click the link for the rest. Thanks Hydro!
KD: Do you come back to Berkeley at all?
AR: I was back this spring actually for a charity event in San Francisco … I stopped by Cal the next day and saw some of the guys. I’m buddies with Kevin Riley so I saw Kevin.
I dropped by the facility for a little bit. I actually got yelled at. They were finally able to do that project there (Renovating Memorial Stadium and constructing the Student-Athlete High Performance Center), and I haven’t been back in like a year, so I went to the gate I’ve always gone in, and this guy just was giving me the business. Calling me every dirty name in the book. ‘Get out of my work site, where’s your hard hat?’ And I’m like, ’I’m just trying to get into the football office.’ And the guy was not happy. Needless to say, it wasn’t a great reunion back at Cal but once I got inside, things were good.

Anthony Felder--San Diego Chargers
After being released in June by the San Diego Chargers, Anthony Felder agreed to terms on another contract that will have him playing for the team in training camp. Don’t read much into his release from the team. Undrafted free agents sometimes are released by the same team several times before making the roster or the practice squad. It’s how NFL teams maximize their talent — even if it comes at the cost of multiple signing bonuses.

Felder has been let go
As the season approaches, with just over a week until the opener, teams must now make some difficult decisions about players’ futures. As the Chargers are stacked most everywhere there were precious few open spots so undrafted free agent linebacker Anthony Felder was the lone soul let go.

Cameron Morrah--Seattle Seahawks

Field Gulls talks about the big issues going into the preseason.
Seattle drafted safety Courtney Greene, defensive end Nick Reed and tight end Cameron Morrah in the seventh round of the NFL draft. All are likely to stick if only on the practice squad. Greene has a good shot at making the roster as a special teams contributor. Reed could stick if he dominates or the team sees a need for situational pass rush. Morrah has a chance to overtake Joe Newton and should he, Morrah will make the final 53 and Newton will be released.

Morrah battling hard for the third tight end spot.
Newton, in his third year out of Oregon State, caught a one-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Seneca Wallace in third quarter of the team’s 27-13 victory.
Newton is competing with rookie Cameron Morrah for the third tight end spot. Morrah caught one pass for seven yards. Newton finished with two catches for 10 yards.

Looks like Morrah left Cal too early
Cameron Morrah: Morrah is a player who also appears destined for the practice squad. Drafted late in the seventh round, he probably could’ve benefited from an additional year in college. He definitely has the potential to be a threat at tight end, but so far, he has appeared clueless and lost on the field. Morrah has yet to prove himself a playmaker as he falls further behind Joe Newton on the depth chart.

Desean Jackson--Philadelphia Eagles

Say what you want about Tha1, but there’s no doubting his competitive level.
Is there a rivalry brewing between Desean Jackson and Jeremy Maclin? At least from Jackson’s perspective, it seems that way.
“When they made that pick I didn’t really understand it, but it is what it is,” said Jackson, who emphasized that he’s not bothered by the decision to draft Maclin and instead sees it as a motivating force.
“He’s a first-round pick. I’m a second-round. He’s going to set the goals high for me.”
It’s not really a secret that Desean Jackson thought he’d be a first round pick last year. In fact, many people speculated that his drop to the second round put a chip on his shoulder that motivated him to have the kind of year he did last season. It certainly seems that seeing Jeremy Maclin, who was drafted where Desean thought he belonged, hold out and miss a week of camp has provided even further motivation. It also seems that the very fact the Eagles drafted Maclin has given Jackson motivation.
Desean has been the unquestioned star of Eagles’ camp so far. In fact he hasn’t just been the best WR, Les Bown called him “the best player on the field.” If this is what he needs to motivate him, so be it.

DeSean Jackson back at practice
BETHLEHAM, Pa. — DeSean Jackson is back practicing after he hyperextended his knee yesterday. The wide receiver sat out this morning’s practice, but could have gone if weren’t for the wet field conditions, coach Andy Reid said.
Jackson participated in a few drills. He took most off during what was a light practice. After the hour-long practice, Jackson was asked how he thought he did. “It went well,” he said, before jogging into the locker room.

I’m a big Desean fan now. He seems to really have grown up. In fact the way he has handled himself in Philly really makes me wonder about the way the coaching staff handled him at Cal. He seems like a genuinely good person determined to succeed on the football field. I still have to wonder ‘what if’ Rodgers and Jackson have played together. Both would have gone number 1 overall. That’s no joke…

Great stuff from Philly.com on Desean
Jackson was asked yesterday about perceptions and proving people wrong, which always seems to be the great motivator in sports.
“People have their opinions on certain things. That’s something I can’t control,” Jackson said. “I’m very comfortable and confident in my work ethic.”
The most entertaining thing in camp has been Jackson’s back-and-forth with cornerback Asante Samuel, often matched against him in drills.
“The biggest thing about me and Asante is, we have a great friendship,” Jackson said. “Before coming out on this field, we hang out, we chill, we have a great time . . . He’s a great corner and I’m a great receiver, so we just get out there and go at it, just have a great time doing it. We’re out here in 90-degree [heat and] humidity. We got to have fun someway, somehow. That’s all it is, just talking mess with each other. He’s one of those corners that does a lot of yapping out there, so any way that I can shut him up, that’s what I’m going to do.”

DeSean Jackson- As the first quarter was winding down, the play we had all been waiting for finally happened. Jackson streaked past two Colts defenders, caught a 39-yard pass from Donovan McNabb and breezed into the endzone for a touchdown. The young receiver’s blazing speed will continue to be a major asset for him as he continues to develop and mature. Jackson finished the night with two catches for 46 yards.

Marshawn Lynch--Buffalo Bills

Brian Galliford of Buffalo Rumblings agrees with TwistNHook…on the essence of Marshawn.
He looked as good as he usually does in practice, but that’s not why I’m mentioning him here. The dude walked right past me; he was literally inches away. The added weight everyone is talking about is legitimate. He’s a specimen. You couldn’t pay me enough to try to tackle that guy. We’re going to miss him in Weeks 1-3.

Nick Sundberg--Carolina Panthers
More from Calogne.
After losing their long snapper to the New Orleans Saints this offseason, the Panthers’ open position has better odds for form Cal long snapper, Nick Sundberg. Sundberg’s chief competition for the job is J.J. Jansen, who spent his rookie season on the disabled list for the Green Bay Packers. Both players competed for rival schools back in high school, so they are both familiar with each other.
Andrew Mason from Panthers.com explains, “Long snapping jobs don’t open too frequently around the league, and success at the gig often leads to a lengthy career.” Right now, Jansen is the favorite to win the job, but Sundberg still has a month to change that perception.

Sundberg has been cut
Carolina signed Kelvin Smith on Friday and released long-snapper Nick Sundberg. The move comes with Thomas Davis sidelined with a sprained right knee and Jon Beason out with a sore left hamstring.
Smith was drafted by Miami in the seventh round in 2007. He played in four games as a rookie before spending last season on injured reserve with a knee injury. Smith was waived last week by the New York Giants.
Sundberg is an undrafted rookie who fell behind J.J. Jansen in the competition for Carolina’s long-snapping position.

Rulon Davis--Denver Broncos
Davis arrived in Denver as an undrafted free agent signed out of Cal, and his name alone immediately garnered positive feelings from Broncos fans everywhere. Despite being a Chargers fan, Rulon’s father was so enamored with the play of Broncos legend Rulon Jones that he decided to name his son after the Denver sack man. Like Mike Anderson before him, Davis is an older rookie as a result of his time with the Marines (Davis spent six months in Iraq in 2004). Rulon appeared in 9 games (7 starts) at Cal during his senior year, totaling 19 tackles, 4 sacks and 2 forced fumbles.
Last winter, Scouts, Inc.’s Todd McShay wrote of Davis, “We fell in love with his potential while breaking down his pre-season tape last summer and he continued to flash special qualities early in 2008.” Meanwhile, Scott Wright of draftcountdown.com wrote that Davis is a “powerful tackler” with a “non-stop motor” but possesses “below-average speed and quickness,” summing him up as an “interesting prospect with the ability to be a left defensive end in a 4-3 defense or possibly even a five-technique in a 3-4 scheme.”

Will Ta'ufo'ou--Chicago Bears
Speaking of Cal rookies, Will Ta’ufo’ou is signed with the Chicago Bears for a cap figure of $311,666 for the 2009 season. That’s not bad for a rookie undrafted free agent, who happens to play a position that is going the way of the dinosaurs in the NFL.
Ta’ufo’ou is a longshot to make the final 53-man roster this season, but according to Brad Biggs of the Chicago Sun-Times, “If the Bears go with just one fullback there’s almost certain to be one on the practice squad. Keep an eye on Ta’ufo’ou. Maybe he will carve out a niche for himself.”
Apparently, Bear Backers (Chicago and Cal) aren’t the only ones that hold Ta’ufo’ou in high esteem. In Ted Miller’s Opening the mailbag post on July 17th, a Bear Backer mentioned Ta’ufo’ou as an underrated fullback and asked who would fill his role. Miller responded with, “Good point. Ta’ufo’ou was a bad man on those lead blocks.”

With as many double TE sets the Bears incorporate there really isn’t a need to carry more than one FB. Zack Follett--Detroit Lions

He’s already signed by the Lions, so we should get plenty of glimpses of him this offseason. Here’s a link to his scouting report.
One of my favorite picks of the draft came in the seventh round. After already selecting an offensive tackle with their first selection of the seventh round, the Lions decided to draft their second linebacker of the day with the 235th pick. Like DeAndre Levy, the LB selected earlier in the day, Zack Follett was technically an outside linebacker in college. The difference between the two is that Follett played some MLB at Cal, though I believe that was mainly in the 3-4. Regardless, Follett has a ton of potential and is a big hitter. I don’t care what people say about his technique, he gets to the ball and makes his target pay when delivering a hit. The best way to describe his play is by saying that he has a mean streak at all times.

Brandon Mebane--Seattle Seahawks

6. How does Brandon Mebane adjust to the three-tech?
Mebane was a beast at right defensive tackle. There he played mostly one-tech, but sometimes shifted to rush the passer. This season, that former situational job is now his only job. How he acclimates to it is HUGE. If Mebane falls back into his natural role and doesn’t just hold his ability but improves, Seattle is another big step to creating a great young defense. If he proves the transition to the one-tech was the right move, and that his stoutness supersedes his disruptive ability, Seattle’s rush defense is going to have two big bites taken out of its middle

Continuing to perform well
Colin Cole might not be the abject liability I feared he would be. With Brandon Mebane drawing attention, teams have had less opportunity to tee of on Cole. Good offensive lines, lines that can single block Mebane, or lines that can single block Cole but match him against a good drive blocker, are going to own Cole.

Craig Stevens--Tennessee Titans
Jimmy: Craig Stevens will probably need a really, really good camp to make this roster. August West: Stevens is a lock for the 53 man roster, IMO
Crumpler is older (and by definition more injury-prone), and if he went down and Stevens wasn’t wasn’t around we’d have nobody to block at that position… no way Fisher lets that happen. I mean even when we had Troupe it was largely because we also had Erron Kinney on roster as well.
My read on it: they’ll carry 4 TEs (Scaife, Crumpler, Cook and Stevens), then probably carry one less WR than planned because Cook can be an emergency WR in addition to the packages where he’s already out there.

Getting physical in practice
As a blocking tight end for the Tennessee Titans, Craig Stevens’ work often goes unnoticed except maybe on a coaches tape.
But in Wednesday afternoon’s practice, Stevens was noticed plenty, getting into four different scraps on the practice field against three different players.
At first, it was defensive end Dave Ball and Stevens who got into a shoving match and would not let go of each other during team drills.
Shortly thereafter, linebacker Stanford Keglar scuffled with Stevens, a second-year tight end from California at the end of a pitch play around the end.
And finally, there was Stevens mixing it up with defensive end Kyle Vanden Bosch on consecutive plays late in practice, with Vanden Bosch punching Stevens toward the end of the fracas. At that point, Titans coach Jeff Fisher intervened and told the players to cut out the extracurricular activities.

Dante Hughes--Indianapolis Colts

Dante Hughes has been a rather disappointing player for the Colts. He was drafted in the third round in 2007, the same third round that produced DT Quinn Pitcock, who quit on the Colts (and football in general) last year after just one season. Hughes has good height and weight for a Cover 2 corner. He plays well in zone, tackles well, and helps out on run support. But after playing significant snaps in 2007 as the nickel back, Hughes seemed to rarely see the field in 2008 despite injuries to starters Kelvin Hayden and Marlin Jackson as well as reserve corners T.J. Rushing and Michael Coe. Keiwan Ratliff managed to leap-frog Hughes on the depth chart last season despite the before mentioned injuries.
…
2009 is a make-or-break season for Hughes. The coaches have clearly lost confidence in him. While Hughes was never known for having great speed, he simply must stop giving WRs that much cushion. He needs to be more disciplined in his zone coverage and not surrender so many big completions. Otherwise, there is a very real chance Dante Hughes will not survive the cut down to 53. If he doesn’t make the 2009 active roster, the 3rd round of the 2007 draft looks like another house of horrors, adding more credence to the notion of the CURSE OF THE THIRD ROUND PICK!

Desmond Bishop--Green Bay Packers

Desmond Bishop: Those seven players should make the 53 man roster, but I expect the Packers will keep eight linebackers (plus another linebacker on the practice squad). So at least two players out of the group of Cyril Obiozor, Danny Lansanah, Brad Jones, Desmond Bishop, and Spencer Havner will make it. Bishop probably has the inside track since he appeared in 15 games (1 start) in 2008, but he hasn’t shown a lot of promise either. We’ll just have to wait and see them in the preseason.

Who the F said he hasn’t shown promise? How old is that? He is the rage of the town these days. While Coach McCarthy is backpedaling on the issue, many are calling for him to start. No wonder with AJ Hawk, a high paid disappointment in the starting slot, and Nick Barnett coming back from injury. Bishop is better than both IMO.

He has had a really good camp. Like I said, many of the locals think he deserves much more playing time, if not the starting slot. I never saw this coming. I always knew he was great at Cal, but I figured he’d be a special teamer in the pro’s. I think this could be a coming out year for Bishop. He looks totally chiseled and fit. Very determined. Gives a decent interview too.

Things looking up for Bishop--starter in 2009?
Does Bishop, who has been a backup during his first two NFL seasons, have a chance to crack the Packers’ starting lineup?
No one, including Bishop, has the answer. When asked this week if he deserves to start, Bishop responded with a question of his own: "I don’t know, everybody keeps asking me that, like, what do you think?"
I think Bishop, a lightly regarded sixth-round draft choice out of California in 2007, has been such a consistent playmaker that the Packers must find a way to keep him on the field.

Justin Forsett--Seattle Seahawks

Outlook:: Seattle gave Forsett a passive thumbs-up by not signing or drafting another high profile rusher to backup its two starters. That’s big, because Greg Knapp builds his offense around two rushers, including running formations without a lead blocker but two true running backs, and should either Julius Jones or T.J. Duckett be injured, Forsett is next in line. Well he could be should he beat out rookie Devin Moore. Moore has very good top speed, but wasn’t invited to the NFL Combine, wasn’t drafted, doesn’t have experience as a punt returner and isn’t considered an outstanding receiver. Forsett’s job is probably safe. I think he could be ok: productive but not dangerous and liable to injury. I think Seattle could use better depth at running back.

Another Forsett article

The temptation is to say this is Justin Forsett’s time to shine, to open eyes, to prove his worth to the Seahawks’ coaching staff as preseason games begin Saturday in San Diego.
But Forsett is looking beyond the exhibition season this year, beyond training camp, beyond the practice games where he made his mark last year as a rookie out of Cal.
Forsett doesn’t want to just build a reputation as a speedy little running back who can rack up yards when it doesn’t count, but isn’t big enough to lean on when the NFL regular-season begins.
At 5-foot-8, he is short in stature. But don’t make the mistake of thinking Forsett is a little guy. At 198 pounds, he packs some punch.

Esp. with the signing of Edge: http://www.fieldgulls.com/2009/8/24/1000862/seattle-seahawks-sign-edgerrin
Seattle fans should take this for what it is. At best, James gives Seattle some starting depth behind Julius Jones and T.J. Duckett. Justin Forsett is a third-down back and Devin Moore is unlikely to make the roster. Seattle is thin at starting running back because it employs two starting running backs, but has only one player to back up both.

Nice article from the Seattle Times
Forsett keeps on making plays.
Justin Forsett is too small to play in the NFL.
I mean, look at him. He’s 5 feet 8. Weighs maybe 185 pounds. When he runs behind his offensive line, he looks like a citizen of Lilliput from “Gulliver’s Travels.”
He’s too small for the big time.
The thing is, too-little Justin Forsett keeps making plays. In his second season, he keeps doing things that defy the league’s logic. He does enough to make the right people think there is a place for him.
“Hey, in the year 2009, 5-8 is the new 6-4,” Forsett said as he stood grinning in front of his locker after the Seahawks’ Saturday exhibition win over Denver. “I’m fine with being 5-8.”
In Saturday’s second quarter, on the go-ahead drive, he was the featured performer. Quarterback Matt Hasselbeck converted three third downs and one fourth down in the beat-the-clock, 80-yard, 14-play drive.
On a third-and-three, Forsett took a screen pass 30 yards. On a third-and-10, inside the red zone, he ran another screen for 11 yards to the Broncos’ 2-yard line.

Justin Forsett rushed seven times for 18 yards and added seven receptions for 58 yards against the Broncos Saturday.
Neither Forsett nor T.J. Duckett were successful on the ground, but Forsett made his presence felt in the passing game. The Seahawks have talked up a committee attack, and Forsett has the best third-down/change-of-pace skill-set on the roster

Don't get injured, don't get arrested, make the roster
Just another day’s work for the Hawk.
Tennessee Titans wide receiver Lavelle Hawkins needs a breakout game to solidify himself as the team’s fourth receiver, but the Edison High graduate may have secured his place on the roster simply by staying out of jail last week.
Chris Davis missed the Titans’ preseason game against the Cowboys because of a hamstring injury and was arrested for driving under the influence while the team was in Dallas.
Hawkins, a second-year pro out of Cal, was battling Davis and Paul Williams for two roster spots behind Nate Washington, Justin Gage and Kenny Britt. The Titans released Davis on Monday. Washington will miss the rest of the preseason with a hamstring injury, which should give Hawkins additional opportunities after recording two catches for 22 yards in the first two preseason games. The Titans will visit Cleveland on Saturday.

Thomas DeCoud--Atlanta Falcons

S Thomas DeCoud to Take A Starting Role in 2009?
From our eyebrow-raising files:
At safety, the team decided not to re-sign veteran Lawyer Milloy and will likely go with second-year S Thomas DeCoud, who barely played last season.
I know it’s early yet and a lot could change and there’s gumption involved, goshdarnit, but this is the first serious suggestion I’ve heard that DeCoud could seize a starting role over William “C4” Moore at strong safety…
The article is from Scout.com’s Adam Caplan, who also has this to say about our defense as a whole:
The bottom line is this defense has way too many questions to answer again. It’s probably going to be a while before the defense becomes a strength and not a weakness.
This raises the rather intriguing question of whether Caplan knows Moore and DeCoud well and has an inside track, or if he’s simply opining based on what he’s seen of DeCoud. His points about the defense not having a ton of depth are valid at linebacker and arguably along the defensive line, but I do believe we’re well-stocked in the secondary.

Last year’s sixth-round pick was a highly productive Division II running back, but failed to make any sort of impact in limited playing time last season. With Rhodes on board, Omon has an uphill climb to make the roster, even if Buffalo’s coaching staff likes his upside. He might get a look at fullback.

It’s always made me wonder about the NFL… why teams can’t utilize amazing talents like Bush, Parrish and Hester… because I know it’s not about size. I see small guys make huge impacts all the time.
Probably has to do with the player himself. Maybe they don’t have the ultimate drive, the ultimate focus. I mean, Steve Smith is TINY, but he leaps and grabs like almost no other. He also plays with a huge chip on his shoulder – that’s that ultimate drive.
I wouldn’t necessarily blame the NFL for certain talents not blowing up huge. Like in baseball, ya gotta have all the tools, not just 1 or 2 – and if you don’t have ’em, ya gotta work hard to develop ’em so that you get to that next level.

Great discussion on Michael Vick in yesterday's DBD.
Between danzig and yellow fever. Here are the footnotes below, click here for the rest.
Danzig: Like everyone I was confused by the Eagle’s decision to hire Vick. I think the press still is. After I talked to my friend at a distressed fund this morning, it all became clearer to me. Vick is a distressed asset that Andy Reid inteds to flip.
A distressed asset is basically an asset that’s in trouble… you buy it because it’s trading at below it’s tangible asset value… and by holding it, changing it, improving it or bundling it… you hope to sell it later for a nice profit.
Now by definition, the distressed asset’s future is at it’s bleakest… nobody wants to touch it… that’s why it’s not even worth it’s tangible value (which is rare). However, the difference between a distressed asset and a cheap asset is often seperated by a single varable…time. Let’s look at Vick as if he was an asset.
Do the Eagles need a QB: I don’t think so… Feva could answer this but I see no need here. This looks like a second "investment property" to me.
When is a good backup at it’s lowest value: Before the season, when all the teams have healthy QBs and backups. Plus the season is all potential… teams believe they have the talent in place to have 10 wins… 12 wins… 16 wins. It’s all good because the season hasn’t started yet. A good backup’s negotiating powers are at its lowest.
When is a good backup most valuable: 3/4th through the season. Many teams are now hit with reality, they aren’t 10 win teams… the starting QB really sucks… the rookie QB really sucks… the starting QB is out with a torn ACL. The free agent Backup’s negotiating powers are at it’s highest.
Why was Vick’s value distressed: Because nobody wanted to touch him. Look at what he’s doing to the Eagles now… it’s a PR shitstorm…. they had to contact the Mayor, Animal groups etc before they even signed him.
Why did Andy Reid roll the dice here: With a superb offense and good defense, I think the Eagles are going to win alot of games. They’ll even have some blowouts. That’s when Andy Reid could give Vick some playing time (as he said he would)… Vick doesn’t need to be impressive. He just needs to change people’s image of him from a criminal that kills dogs…to a normal football player. Seeing someone throw a touchdown tends to do that for you.
After the one year Andy can keep Vick (what if he’s actually good again?)… or sign him for the cost of a 4th round rookie. He then can occasionally play Vick and wait till one team is DESPERATE for a QB… it happens every year without fail. Then flip him for a 2nd round pick, a LB, another TE… whatever.
Fever… what are your thoughts? I’d like to know because I’m not really knowledgeable about free agency, contracts and trades and such. But I do know what a distressed asset is.
Yellow Fever:My first thought is whether I want to get an Eagles Vick jersey or not. I’m leaning no. When I first told the girlfriend about the signing, her reaction was, "I hate the Eagles." And she had just spent two days with me at training camp! So let’s just say that that piece of apparel would go over even less well than my "HOT GIRLS DIRECT TO YOU IN LESS THAN 20 MINUTES" shirt that I picked up in Vegas.
A couple thoughts:
A.J. Feeley’s days are numbered. He’s definitely gone.
I wonder what’s going through Kevin Kolb’s head.
He’ll be a much better Wildcat option than THA1 was last year. Off the top of my head I can only recall that formation being a success for them once, when he ran a sweep for a touchdown. The only other time they put DeSean back there, he threw a pick in the red zone.
The Eagles’ contract is for a second year team option at 5.2 million. Much more than the cost of a fourth round rookie. You could argue that perhaps they could decline the option and try to resign him at a lower cost, but I think the only way the Eagles decide to resign him is if he plays well. And if he plays well, he’ll be worth a lot more money.
Just like everyone else, I was shocked seeing that the Eagles signed him. I figured there was no way (for a number of reasons) Vick would end up with the Eagles, but now that he has I figure it’s more likely that the Eagles are going all-out this year to try and win a Super Bowl. If they don’t, well, they have either Vick or Kolb on hand to take over the QB role because McNabb may finally end up being run out of town since he’ll only have one year left on his contract. I don’t think the Eagles are doing this merely to get some trade value out of him, because they won’t be in a position to showcase him and drive up his value that much and the PR backlash isn’t worth a second round pick. A Super Bowl might be, and that’s the only reason I can see them doing this.

Raiders just cut Lorenzo Neal.
NAPA, Calif. – The Oakland Raiders released veteran fullback Lorenzo Neal on Wednesday, ending his brief stay with the team.
Neal, who signed with the Raiders in May, was expected to push Oren O’Neal and Luke Lawton for the starting fullback job but became expendable when O’Neal impressed Oakland’s coaching staff with his recovery from major knee surgery.
“Im just preparing for where we need to be as a football team, really, and what we thought we have, and whether that was enough and all that,” coach Tom Cable said. “So it was time to go in a different direction there.”
Neal, 38, was trying to latch on with his eighth NFL team and seemed to be doing well. But Cable said the Raiders felt O’Neal’s recovery from surgery was going better than expected, which made Neal expendable.
Damn. I was psyched about signing Lorenzo Neal and I really thought it was gonna be a step-up for the Raiders’ running game. Neal’s plowed the road for more 1000-yard rushers than I can count. I’d say that I hope the Raiders know what they’re doing, but they’ve been flying blind for almost a decade, why stop now?
