Riley looks sharp for most of the day; Mansion good at times, Sweeney with one nice throw
Quarterback report from Enos, filling in for Okanes

Monday’s practice started under a hot sun, and Kevin Riley looked sharp right from the start with the first unit in 11-on-11 drills. A nice checkdown to Shane Vereen and a slant to Nyan Boateng provided some early highlights and, as a whole, the passing game looked good for much of the first part of practice. Brock Mansion completed a couple nice passes as well, but he also sailed a few high throughout practice.

The best throw of the day belonged to Beau Sweeney who, in an 11-on-11 drill late in practice threw a laser right down the seam, finding Charles Satchell for about a 20-yard touchdown. There was only one real transgression by the quarterbacks, with Riley missing Alex Lagemann and instead finding Marcus Ezeff late in practice.

Whenever I read reports that mention a good pass here or there, I wonder how much importance should be placed on small sample size plays. One really sweet pass from Beau Sweeney won’t make him the starter, and one interception thrown by Kevin Rilely won’t displant him, although many of the same probably would. I guess it just sounds sexier to bring up highlights than whatever else one could write about.

Nevermind, I guess I’ve answered my own question.

The first unit O-line is...

According to Enos,

the first unit had Mike Tepper at left tackle, Matt Summers-Gavin at left guard, Chris Guarnero at center, Chet Teofilo at right guard and Mitchell Schwartz at right tackle

Think Summers-Gavin has supplanted Boskovich?

This would surprise me. But I’m far from expert on O-line play. Should I be surprised/worried about this possible development?

Praise be to Tedford!

by Ohio Bear on Aug 11, 2009 6:02 AM PDT up reply actions

You should probably be happy, Boskovich didn’t play well last year

by omnizzle on Aug 11, 2009 8:44 AM PDT up reply actions

Teofilo took 1st-team RG snaps for the first 3 days, but he and 2nd-teamer Justin Cheadle swapped teams for day 4.

My prediction for opening day is Tepper, MSG, Guarnero, Cheadle, Schwartz with Cheadle and Teofilo battling it out all camp, maybe with Chet quick off the sideline. Definitely seems like MSG is getting that spot. Very natural talent.

I’m not sure Cheadle will get the nod just yet, but either way the depth is good. Edwards also is a nice back up guard with all the PT he had last season.

True. Edwards is a real asset off the bench.. He can play 4 spots, I believe

I think so as well. Although someone really needs to step up to prove they are ready to take over Tepper’s spot next year. For now I think Edwards/Schwartz are the leaders but who knows.

Grrr.

Youtube is blocked in China. *

*any number of reasons: 6/4/89, Xinjiang Riots, the 60th Anniversary of the Founding of the People’s Republic. But if you ask me, I think its because someone at youku.com or tudou.com (Chinese video sharing sites) made some payments to the people running the Great Firewall.

It’s actually not a terrible tradeoff – since tudou has entire episodes and series runs of tv shows and movies while they’re still in the theater – but I miss out on really dumb-ass stuff. Like ArthurKade.

by LeonPowe on Aug 11, 2009 3:23 AM PDT reply actions

In actuality

the “Great Firewall” is much more a nuisance than an actual block. By using any number of proxies or VPNs blocks are easily easily eluded. But feeding a bunch of videos (say like danzig’s best kung fu fights) through the proxy sucks.

What other sites of prominence does the Great Firewall block?

Contact me: bearsnecessities@gmail.com

by Avinash Kunnath on Aug 11, 2009 3:32 AM PDT up reply actions

It varies from time to time

For the first year I was back in China bbc.com – but all of a sudden it came on. The annoying ones right now are Facebook, Twitter, Youtube and blogspot. news sites come and go – facebook had never been blocked until the xinjiang unrest – twitter has come and gone with big anniversaries. A lot of the older webpage hosting sites too – like geocities and er. . .well, geocities.

Want a free 250KB SSL VPN?

by danzig on Aug 11, 2009 9:33 AM PDT up reply actions

sure

After a while you get used to it. For some odd reason I can access facebook and twitter via my blackberry. And twitter via hahlo and tweetdeck – maybe the GFW isn’t sophisticated enough to check API, I’m not sure.

After a while it’s just complaining for complaining sake. It would be nice to watch a bunch of youtube videos – but I really should be working instead (when at work). And the trade-offs of no respect for IP rights means stacks upon stacks of pirate DVDs and lots of stuff uploaded onto Chinese video sharing sites.

But if you got one,I won’t pass it up.

The day was dominated by the defense

According to the Daily Cal.

On what became an increasingly foggy Monday evening, the Bears’ defense swarmed all over the offense’s running game, which was the focus of much of the 11-on-11 time.

Senior defensive end Tyson Alualu set the tone with a hurry of quarterback Kevin Riley in the first session of 11-on-11’s. And although they were still in shells, redshirt freshman linebacker Chris Little asserted the defense’s physicality with a solid tackle of running back Covaughn DeBoskie-Johnson in the backfield for a five-yard loss.

In 7-on-7’s later in the day, the secondary got in on the action as safety Marcus Ezeff picked off a Riley pass intended for wide receiver Alex Lagemann. Cornerback Darian Hagan had a would-be interception thrown right at him by Riley, but he dropped the ball to the groans of his defensive teammates.

Nyan had a little too much of the Nyan in him...
—Wide receiver Nyan Boateng stopped a few hearts in practice, screaming and clutching his knee after going down hard while reaching out for the ball. The defensive backs gathered on the sideline hurried to his side, but Boateng quickly popped back up, laughing and appearing very pleased with his little joke. His teammates weren’t as amused and several cursed him out for scaring them.

The Bear Insider takes a look at Josh Harper...
LINK

Besides following Cal during the year, Harper had a chance to personally review the Cal program, camping at Cal and impressing the staff enough to generate an offer from the Bears, then making a follow-up visit two weeks ago.

“I am excited to be able to join the Bears,” said Harper. "The education was key for me, and it’s close to home so I can be near my family. My relationship with Coach Daft was really comfortable, too. I can really relate to his style so that’s great for me.

“Coach Daft said that he likes his receivers to know all three receiving positions. However I can contribute to the team, I’ll be glad to fit in. I feel like I have a strong knowledge of the game, with both good hands and good vision on the field.”

“Josh is has got a ton of athleticism,” said St. Mary’s Head Coach Tony Franks. “That shows when he catches the ball, when he runs routes and gets off press coverage, when he runs with the ball and evades tacklers. He’s just a real special athlete.”

...as well as Davon Dunn
LINK

“Davon’s an explosive player,” said Lincoln Head Coach Ron Hamamoto. "It didn’t take long for teams to realize that they had to kick away from him and that’s huge for field position when you have kickers not concentrating on kicking it deep. Good things happen when he touches the ball. Cal definitely got a good one.

“With his dad’s experience as an NFL receiver, he was brought up around football his whole life. When he was a little kid, he was always around NFL training camps and he’s just football-savvy. You can tell when he runs routes that he’s above any of the other guys out there, with his double moves and the other little intangible things that it’s hard to teach because it’s something that comes naturally. He’s got all those tools.

“And as a person, he’s just a great kid. He’s quiet but he’s a leader and he sets a strong example. I just think he’s going to be highly successful. He’s got the work ethic, he’s got the speed and he’s got the athletic ability.”

Leon Powe getting ready to sign with the Cavs
Put this in the NBA thread, but it’s LEON, so he deserves another mention.

Brian Windhorst of the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports: According to a source, the Cavs have the framework of a contract completed with free agent forward Leon Powe. It could become official as early as Tuesday, when Powe is expected to come to Cleveland to meet with team doctors. Powe is in the middle of recovering from a torn ACL in his left knee and may not be able to return until the All-Star Break. But the Cavs feel like he’s worth the wait.

How cool would it be to see Powe and Anderson dueling in the Eastern Conference Finals…

Surprise, surprise: Tedford thinks recruiting coverage is overkill
Do you?
But Cal head coach Jeff Tedford believes that some of the the coverage has gotten out of hand.

Unlike the universities themselves, which face NCAA restrictions on the amount of contact allowed with prospects, recruiting services have unrestricted access to the recruits. As a result, Tedford feels that the exposure given to the young prospects may be too much, too soon.

“I think it puts a lot of pressure on the kids,” he says. “It puts them in the limelight right away. And the kids have enough to do without every move they make, having to justify things, or what did that visit mean or how did that go.”

Tedford notes the trend of early commitments that started on the East Coast, along with increased communication via the internet, have combined to push the recruiting process earlier and earlier, as schools try to stay competitive.

Things that piss me off

Last night I’m watching TV with the wifey and some dumbass celebrity gossip show comes on. So I groaned and began to remove myself from the room when I heard them talking about Kate Gosselin and calling her Kate 1.0. Apparently ex hubby John is already dating another Kate? Still, “Kate 1.0” pisses me off. Why is she famous except for being a media whore and having a douchebag for a husband? Does anyone care about this people? They don’t even have any “Kade style” to entertain the masses with. Stupid people.

Ted Miller predicts which bowls Pac-10 teams will attend.

California

Bowl bound? Count on it.

Best Case/Worst Case: If Cal’s passing game improves, this is a BCS bowl team, whether that’s the Rose Bowl or another game. If the passing game continues to be mediocre, then the Bears could end up in another mid-level bowl game.

Prediction: Cal is the most likely candidate for a second BCS bowl berth, but odds are a No. 2 finish will send the Bears to the Holiday Bowl.

New Rule Change

Apparently, a rule just changed in college football effective for this season. If a quarterback is hit while throwing the ball, and the ref blows the whistle, the ref may then review the play to determine if the pass was actually a fumble. If it was a fumble, whatever happened after the whistle can be counted as part of the play. Meaning if after the whistle, a defensive player picks up the ball and returns in for a touchdown, the result of the rule would be a touchdown.

by chowder on Aug 11, 2009 1:07 PM PDT reply actions

There goes playing from snap to whistle.

by Yes We Cannon on Aug 11, 2009 1:12 PM PDT up reply actions

The only non-subjective use I can think of is if someone dives on the ball afterward. Everything else has the potential for players to give up on the play, which tends to make touchdown scoring easier.

by sec119 on Aug 11, 2009 1:20 PM PDT up reply actions

Also, Kickers

Apparently, the ref at the womens huddle mentioned that there was a rule change regarding ‘Roughing the Kicker’. Essentially, if the kicker leaves the protected pocket, then contact is no longer considered roughing the kicker. Rags pointed out that this would be only applying to punts and usually muffed ones at that. But still, I think it makes perfect sense.

I only heard this second hand, and would love to have confirmation, but I’m not sure how to go about it. Anyone?

Bust out the Goldies vrs Stanford?

From espn:

ASU) and hated the all yellow (vrs Oregon) home uni’s. As for the road uniforms, I think they tend to be consistently good but not great, after all it is hard to mess up white.

Given the bad memories with those jerseys, I really can’t love them.

It'll be just you, me, and Peter Nincompoop.

by BeastMode on Aug 11, 2009 2:26 PM PDT up reply actions

I do too. My favorite uni combo is the white on white. Our other jerseys are too plain. At least the white ones have those little gold outlines going down the pant leg as well as around the numbers.

I always liked the old 2004-2007 blue on blue…so sharp, and navy is my favorite color.

Some say his powerade gives you infrared vision...and that his sweat towels wipe away sin. All we know is he's called giantfan5.

I don't know what they're called

but the 1975/Roth jerseys are really cool.

I’d love to see those jerseys make another comeback like they did at USC 07.

Oregon fans rate Cal uniform combos? And they do it the same way? Craaaazy.

Of course. Oregon takes in account all aspects of the opposition.

No need. I bet I can remember every Oregon uniform combo from the last three years.

Though, that isn’t something I’m particularly proud of.

Acme Bread Co. (in the Ferry Building) has sandwiches? Have I just missed them every other time I’ve gone before?

Yes, you missed it

I think they’ve had sandwiches since they opened there (or at least since I can remember)

ESPN bowl projections: Feldman (who I might add, is rather creepy in person) has us in the Sun Bowl, Schlabach has us in the Holiday Bowl. Both have USC in the Rose Bowl against Penn St and Ohio State, respectively. Pray to Bak Bak that neither of those Rose Bowl predictions is accurate.

Is there a story regarding the creepiness of Feldman?

by sec119 on Aug 11, 2009 3:47 PM PDT up reply actions

He just kept giving me these weird looks when I was at media day. Every time I made eye contact with him he had this odd look. There’s something unsettling about his eyes. That and he looked tired/not too excited to be there.

More importantly, Feldman is bad at predicting college football.

by AERose on Aug 12, 2009 12:00 AM PDT up reply actions

At first I was commenting on Feldman’s general tendency toward predicting Cal failure, then I actually read his bowl breakdown and saw that he had both Boise State and BYU making it into the BCS, which is just plain stupid.

by AERose on Aug 12, 2009 12:04 AM PDT up reply actions

Feldman is good at one thing—recruiting. I wish ESPN would let him stick to that.
