SIX MILE, S.C. -- A Pickens County woman was ticketed over the weekend for riding a stolen horse down Main Street in Six Mile, S.C. -- but police said the woman blamed the horse for the ticket.
Tracy Nadine Ellenburg, 40, was given a ticket for disorderly conduct after a pedestrian flagged down an officer on Saturday and told them Ellenburg was riding down the center yellow line and was barely able to stay on the horse.
The sheriff's report said an officer found a large tan horse tied to a bench at a convenience store and found Ellenburg trying to use a phone inside.
The officer said Ellenburg's speech was slurred, she had an aroma of alcohol and was unsteady on her feet.
She told the officer she was riding the horse to her boyfriend's house.
Who's in the mood for some college football?!?!

Dana Vollmer continuing to dominate:
ROME – Former California All-American Dana Vollmer swam an American-record and personal-record time of 1:55.29 to qualify for the 200-meter freestyle final at the 2009 FINA Swimming World Championships on Tuesday night in the Stadia del Nuoto. Vollmer won the second 200-freestyle semifinal with her American mark, which is the second-fastest time of the eight swimmers who reached the final. Golden Bears sophomore Sara Isakovic, swimming for Slovenia in the same 200-free semi as Vollmer, posted a time of 1:57.04 but did not advance to the final.
Italian Federica Pellegrini broke her own world record with the fastest 200-free semi time (1:53.67).
In the 200-free heats earlier on Tuesday, Vollmer became only the second U.S. woman to break 1:56.00 when she posted a then-personal record of 1:55.98, the fastest time of the morning. Katie Hoff held the previous American record of 1:55.78. Isakovic swam 1:56.99 in the 200-free heats.

BERKELEY – The California volleyball team will host San Jose State on Saturday, Sept. 12, in a 6 p.m. PT match at Haas Pavilion, head coach Rich Feller announced today. The match will immediately follow the conclusion of the Cal-Eastern Washington football game taking place at Memorial Stadium with a kickoff time of 2:30 p.m. Fans with tickets to the football game will receive free admission to the volleyball match.

I really hope some of you can attend some games this year...
Because Rich Feller, just like last year, was able to pull three more FAB50 recruits this year, including the #1 Setter (aka Quarterback) recruit in the country. (Our current Setter, Carli Lloyd, was also the #1 setter recruit in the country in 2007). Plus there’s also a good chance that Correy Johnson (6’4"), our new FAB50 Middle Blocker will see some playing time this year.
Almost every Sat game will be after the football game (and free) so it would be so easy for any of you to have a nice air-conditioned, cool-down at Haas and see some world-class volleyball.
Here’s the 2009 FAB 50 (in alphabetical order):
I have only one minor complaint about Rich Feller this year…. he lost Charlotte Brown to the farm… a local girl from Los Lomas in Walnut Creek. Yup, he screwed that one up. Had he not, we would’ve had the #1 recruiting class in the country this year. As is, we’re just top 5… oh well.

Of course… they’ve been the #1 program in the country this decade. However, losing a girl from Walnut Creek that used to hang out at your gym and practice with your team is just embarrassing. Coach Feller shouldn’t be losing easy battles like that.

She was all over the place. First she was coming to Cal… then Oregon, then Stanford. Who knows what these girls are thinking. But bottom line, if she attends Cal’s camp each year… hangs out with the coaching staff… and Feller makes living room visits with the parents… he’s gotta close the fucking deal!!!D#$#

YO picks us 2nd in Pac-10
Until the Bears find a passing game, it will be hard to call on the offense to bail them out if the defense is having a bad day or they are facing an explosive offense. Cal may indeed find that passing game, and if that happens, it will become a serious contender. But as we stand right now, the Bears aren’t much different from last year’s team. They will have more experience and their defense might be even better, and that’s why they will climb a couple of notches up from fourth place. But until they find a balanced offense to complement their dominant defense, it is difficult to pick them as champions.

Interesting article on Moneyball and Billy Beane.
“It was a movie, for god’s sake,” Beane says. “What do you think I was going to get out of it? You think it was going to help me score chicks? I read in one scene I was at an Applebee’s and ordered a mojito. I don’t even know what’s in a mojito.”
So, basically, you gotta Go Bears!
Hilarious.
I know very little about baseball — but two things stood out to me in that article:
1. People mistaking Moneyball for a strategy that helps teams win (rather than a strategy to get better value for money)
2. The fact that the use of statistics/sabermetrics has a totally different impact on a team with a large payroll (like Boston) than on a team with a small payroll (like Oakland)
by HolmoePhobe on Jul 29, 2009 10:17 AM PDT up reply actions
I think it’s sad how personally invested people are in Beane’s system failing. It’s one thing to take satisfaction that another team is less successful (which means there’s more wins out there for you), but to be extra satisfied that it’s the A’s and not some other, non-Moneyball team? Seems kind of weird to me.
People take offense at the idea that he didn’t follow the status quo and succeeded. Although it’s my belief that the Big 3 had far more to do with the team’s success than the other personnel that he managed to find during the period in question.

Cal-Michigan is on the respirator
Although there have been some reports from inside sources that something has been finalized, based on what the coaches are saying (Tedford denied it in yesterday’s chat too), it isn’t going to be a Cal-Michigan home and home.
It won’t be a Pac-10 team [that Michigan faces], and 2011 is not necessarily the return game. Mark Snyder:
The coach (Rich Rod) expanded a bit on the game to be added for next season’s opener, saying it may not be returned by Michigan for a couple of years, one of the criteria of making it work. He also ruled out playing a Pac-10 school, saying U-M doesn’t need to do that. That leaves Virginia and Pittsburgh as primary BCS school candidates with an open date early next year.Cal and Oregon State are dead, then.

http://michiganzone.blogspot.com/2005/12/matt-leinart-pictures-real-story.html
But I posted this anyway.
And honestly, I'm down like the economy
2010 schedule
calbears.com shows us needing one more game in 2010. Given that we’re already playing UC Davis in the opener, an “A” or “B” opponent would seem to make sense:
2010 (need one game)
Sept. 4 – UC Davis
Sept. 11 – Colorado
Sept. 25 – Washington
Oct. 2 – at Arizona
Oct. 9 – UCLA
Oct. 16 – at USC
Oct. 23 – Arizona State
Oct. 30 – at Oregon State
Nov. 6 – at Washington State
Nov. 13 – Oregon
Dec. 4 – Stanford [sic]
Praise be to Tedford!
Is Colorado an A or B? I look at it like Maryland, which I would posit is an A. Maybe not an A++++ like Tennessee, but still.
Supreme Leader Ayatollah TwistNHook!
www.CaliforniaGoldenBlogs.com
Colorado should be an A opponent by 2010.
A good B opponent would be a mid-tier SEC team, Mississippi State maybe?
And honestly, I'm down like the economy
The Colorado coach claimed they were going to win 10 games this year. Last year they were 5-7, but suffered 10 season-ending injuries and were relying on a lot of underclassmen at the end of the year. That should bode well for them this year, and us next.
Actually, I paraphrased that from the preciously linked Stewart Mandel article, I was seeing if anyone would catch on.
That’s why I said “A” or “B.” I could understand the thought process of categorizing CU either way. They’re a Big 12 opponent with some track record of being good, but not so much in recent years. Frankly, I’m not sure how to categorize Michigan for 2010.
Praise be to Tedford!
Call me crazy (and I am), but I would be okay with playing at Michigan in 2010 without requiring a return game in Berkeley. I wonder if our athletic dept would consider that to revive the discussion (assuming they’re not completely dead).
Praise be to Tedford!
Isn’t that the reason the 90s deal was killed? 3 road games and 2 home for us wasn’t equal?

[Steve] Holton [Cal’s Deputy Director of Athletics] said that coach Jeff Tedford has "an A-B-C philosophy’’ about scheduling. That is, each year he wants to play a school from the A list — a BCS-caliber team from a major conference. He wants a B team from the Mountain West or the Western Athletic Conference. And he wants a C team, or, as Holton said, "somebody you think you have a pretty good opportunity to beat.’’

Mandel on Pac-10 scheduling
His mailbag:
Should the Pac-10 reduce its conference schedule by one game?
— Todd, Mission Viejo, Calif.
That’s a tough one. On the one hand, I find it admirable the conference goes its own way and settles its champion on the field, thus avoiding controversies like the Oklahoma/Texas Big 12 situation last year. On the other hand, the ninth game is probably hurting the league more than it helps. As Pac-10 aficionado Ted Miller recently pointed out, the conference guarantees itself five extra losses than other leagues, thus making it that much harder to produce a BCS champion, or even a second BCS team (which the league hasn’t done since 2002).
From a purely on-field standpoint, it would probably behoove the Pac-10 to take the SEC approach and replace those 10 extra conference games with 10 games against I-AA foes. Voters don’t seem to put much emphasis on non-conference scheduling; if you lose, you drop, as much of the conference did last September. However, there’s one challenge most Pac-10 teams face that their SEC counterparts don’t: filling their stadiums. LSU fans will turn out whether the Tigers are facing Alabama or Arkansas State, but that’s not the case at Arizona State, UCLA or Stanford. Those teams need as many meaningful home games as possible.
No longer wanting an interview with Ryan Anderson.
Mandel wasn't kidding about the seating
Here’s a link to an analysis the National Championship Issue did comparing average attendance and quality of opponent by conference. It’s pretty striking to see the drop-off and makes as good a case as any why the MWC isn’t ready to go primetime:
Abstract:
Attention all college presidents, AD’s, and wussy coaches – I’ve got a deal for you.
Us fans will acknowledge the fact that in order to be prudent stewards of your college or university, sometimes you have to do what’s fiscally sound (aka, schedule cupcakes in order to make money, get an easy win, and go to a bowl game). Sometimes.
But if we accept that, you have to acknowledge the fact that a lot of us fans think that despite the money, this is a cowardly and bullshit path that leads to uncompetitive games that none of us want to watch. (You can’t ignore the fact that when playing non-BCS opponents your attendance drops an average of -14%, and when playing I-AA teams it drops an average of -22%.)
Deal?
So Bill Simmons's movie of the decade is...
Yeah, really. Has there ever been another good drama about the dynamics of a rock ‘n’ roll band? Think about how much time we spend listening to music. Think about how much time we spend wondering about bands and individual artists. Now, think about your favorite movies about fictional bands. Give me your top 10. (I’m waiting.) Give me your top five. (Still waiting.) OK, give me one other good one. You can’t.
The degree of difficulty for “Famous” was off the charts. It was a 10 out of 10. A period piece about a rock band? Cameron Crowe pulled it off and even won an Oscar for “Best Original Screenplay.” He crafted a masterpiece loaded with memorable moments, elite performances, a believable band and meticulous detail. It has a salient theme — namely, that 1974 was the exact time when music lost its innocence and started to go corporate. It has a few iconic scenes, one iconic performance (Billy Crudup absolutely crushing the role of Russell Hammond), as well as a final 10 minutes that are as good as any movie I can remember. It has a director’s cut DVD (“Untitled”) that’s somehow better than the released movie (a rarity). And best of all, of any movie of the 2000s, it has the best quotes. A treasure chest, if you will.
I mean, it was a very sweet film, but it’s not like I’m going to watch it over and over again. The Dark Knight, Gladiator, No Country for Old Men, even those three with the hobbits seem like films that’ll last beyond this decade.

Of course, as previously discussed on these forums, I am the worst person on earth to watch “Historical” movies with as I get really distracted by historical inaccuracies that are on screen for dramatic effect.

5) 300 (it was good to look at, but some of the stuff was totally ridiculous—can’t people just tell the story straight???)

*Never saw Pocahantas thankfully
*Agree re: the Patriot
*What was wrong with the Thin Red Line? Interesting movie I thought (My WWII Pacific theater history knowledge is pretty spotty admittedly)
*Pearl Harbor was awful but the attack itself was really well done. The rest of the film was absolute shit. Reminded me of Titantic (awesome where the ship is going down, the rest is total suckage)
*300 was virtually unwatchable, a huge disappointment (Good book to read is Gates of Fire by Steven Pressfield)
Braveheart was the worst though. It still remains the only movie where I yelled at the screen and it was totally involuntary. After the 9,347th historical inaccuracy in that movie, I said “You’ve got to be fucking kidding me” a little too loud apparently. Didn’t even realize I had done it until my friend loudly shushed me with 50 or so people turning around in their seats staring at me.

The only upside was that Disney gave us another female character for horny teenagers to dream about at night…family network my ass.
Thin Red Line had some ridiculous scene where the Japanese started getting on their knees and surrending. No hari-kari at all. The number of Japanese who surrendered at Guadanacal could not have been more than a mere handful. Death before dishonor. That scene really bothered me, although I guess Japs killing themselves in mass suicide would have scarred me.

Where to begin? The myth of William Wallace is almost entirely based on a poem by a 15th century poet named Blind Harry, almost 200 years after Wallace was killed. So accepting that, some leeway can be given to the early parts of Wallace’s life and marraige for example. That said, the following really bothered me:
In the movie, the reason the Scots rebelled was because of the English using the Droight de Seigneur rights of the nobility (local noble screws the peasant wife before the husband does on wedding night). There is some doubt this custom was ever real but Edward I certainly never instituted it.
The portrayal of Isabelle. Basically, she was 10 when Wallace died and didn’t come to England until she was 13. She certainly never met him and/or get impregnated by him.
Edward I died 2 years after Wallace.
Edward never killed any of his son’s boyfriends by chucking them off a castle wall. He exiled them instead.
The battles were ridiculous, especially the one where the Irish rush the Scottish lines, suddenly change sides and go and rout the English. Also wish the “Battle of Stirling Bridge” had actually featured a bridge since it was critical to the success of the Scots in real life.
the scene where he and his brother as children find the clan chiefs murdered by the treacherous English is also complete tosh.
It has been many years since I’ve seen the film so there are plenty more there but these have always stuck in my mind.

Mind you, the bridge could well have been a few planks over a stream, these things tend to get blown out of proportion over time.
Maybe so but the fact the English crowded the bridge and could only cross 3-4 abreast completely undid their 6-1 numerical advantage. Didn’t hurt that the bridge collapsed either. Pretty crucial if you ask me.
Mel admitted he butchered stuff in the name of “watchability”. Whatever.

300 wasn’t meant to be an accurate historical portrayal – it was based on the Frank Miller graphic novel. In terms of being an accurate to the graphic novel, it was balls-on perfect except for the stupid gratuitious rape scene which totally ruined the movie and is the only reason why i will never buy it.

Semi-Pro was really funny, but not as memorable or quotable as the 3 I mentioned. Step Brothers is a movie you have to watch multiple times (which isn’t the norm for comedies). I was kind of lukewarm about it when I first saw it, but when you think about the ridiculous number of quotable lines in it you realize how funny it is. You also have to watch it with friends.

What Judd Apatow people had a major role in Tropic Thunder? Ben Stiller doesn’t count – he hasn’t worked with Judd Apatow since ‘The Ben Stiller Show’. Downey Jr? Jack Black? Tom Cruise? Matthew McConaughey? It’s not an Apatow movie – and I actually would be surprised if it were an Apatow movie, because it’s funny.

Updates on NFL-bound bears.
Speaking of Cal rookies, Will Ta’ufo’ou is signed with the Chicago Bears for a cap figure of $311,666 for the 2009 season. That’s not bad for a rookie undrafted free agent, who happens to play a position that is going the way of the dinosaurs in the NFL.
Ta’ufo’ou is a longshot to make the final 53-man roster this season, but according to Brad Biggs of the Chicago Sun-Times, “If the Bears go with just one fullback there’s almost certain to be one on the practice squad. Keep an eye on Ta’ufo’ou. Maybe he will carve out a niche for himself.”
After being released in June by the San Diego Chargers, Anthony Felder agreed to terms on another contract that will have him playing for the team in training camp. Don’t read much into his release from the team. Undrafted free agents sometimes are released by the same team several times before making the roster or the practice squad. It’s how NFL teams maximize their talent — even if it comes at the cost of multiple signing bonuses.
After losing their long snapper to the New Orleans Saints this offseason, the Panthers’ open position has better odds for form Cal long snapper, Nick Sundberg. Sundberg’s chief competition for the job is J.J. Jansen, who spent his rookie season on the disabled list for the Green Bay Packers. Both players competed for rival schools back in high school, so they are both familiar with each other.
Andrew Mason from Panthers.com explains, “Long snapping jobs don’t open too frequently around the league, and success at the gig often leads to a lengthy career.” Right now, Jansen is the favorite to win the job, but Sundberg still has a month to change that perception.
If there is any undrafted Cal rookie with a good shot of making an NFL team, it’s definitely Rulon Davis. For one, his nickname ‘The Beast’ fits him on game day. Secondly, and probably more importantly, the Denver Broncos’ defensive line jobs are completely up for grabs this year.
Brian Howell of timescall.com, doesn’t think that the Broncos upgraded their woeful defensive line. Maybe he’ll change his tune after a couple of preseason games, or a couple of Rulon Davis sacks — whichever comes first.

Another important update:
Nate Longshore signs with the Miami Dolphins
Former Cal QB Nate Longshore today signed a $500,000 contract with the Miami Dolphins. It seems unlikely he can make the final 53-man roster this season, with Chad Pennington starting, Chad Henne being groomed as a future starting quarterback, and Pat White’s being drafted in the second round of the NFL draft this year. It seems likely, however, that Longshore could get a spot on the practice squad.

I would play on the practice squad for $500,000.
Did the article say that how much of that money if any was guaranteed?
Honestly, the best thing for Longshore was probably to get as far away from Berkeley as possible. Whatever effect the injuries had on his mechanics, the pressure of having to prove he really could cut it, that he was worth being Mel Kiper’s #1 Junior QB prospect in 2007 had to have affected his play making ability.

Actually, I’m moving to London in a few weeks, so I will not be around. The AIA used to set up fee guidelines, but it was subsequently sued. Now there is no set fee structure. This answer is delves into the subject a bit more: http://en.allexperts.com/q/Architecture-2369/2008/7/Architect-Fees-USA.htm
Basically, ask around and do your homework to see what the bids specify, but also have a good idea of what you want prior to meeting with the architect (number of rooms, square footage, etc). Its a headache to get started, but will save you pain and money later in the process.
At the present moment Architecture has been hit hard, so it might be a good time to look around and find some desperate people. My girlfriend’s firm went from 50 to 13 people, and her old firm in OC of about 60 completely folded.

Any idea what the deal is with the Athletic Ticket Office (ATO) stating that there were
only 1000 tix left to the Cal v. $C game? Now said message has disappeared and there appears to be plenty of tix left to this game. This leads me to believe the ATO was involved in some deceptive advertising. Any idea on how many tickets are left?

The only Pac-10 entry:
USC – Brazil – The juggernaut powerhouse who always seems to lose at least one game a year that they shouldn’t. They never really go away, though, and they almost always step it up big-time in big games. It doesn’t hurt that both places are surrounded by women with unreal bodies and bronzed tans that would make even the Pope fidget nervously.
Listen to or read JFK’s speech at Memorial Stadium on March 23, 1962 (Charter Day).
In its first graduating class it included a future Governor of California, a future Congressman, a judge, a State assemblyman, a clergyman, a lawyer, a doctor—all in a graduating class of 12 students!
This college, therefore, from its earliest beginnings, has recognized and its graduates have recognized, that the purpose of education is not merely to advance the economic self-interest of its graduates. The people of California, as much if not more than the people of any other State, have supported their colleges and universities and their schools because they recognize how important it is to the maintenance of a free society that its citizens be well educated.
Today you carry on that tradition. Our distinguished and courageous Secretary of Defense, our distinguished Secretary of State, the Chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission, the Director of the CIA and others, all are graduates of this University. It is a disturbing fact to me, and it may be to some of you, that the New Frontier owes as much to Berkeley as it does to Harvard University.
Wilson and JFK would be shaking their head right now…

that’s tough company…if alderson turns into Lincecum 2.0…it might be the worst.
trading’s always a hit/miss game (beane traded huddy for meyer, thomas, & cruz which still pisses me off today).
of course…we don’t know if Alderson’s more Jesse Foppert than Lincecum. In fact, until they hit on Lincecum and Cain…it’s been a lot of talk (Foppert, Ainesworth, etc).
The scary thing is at some point I think the Giants need to move either Cain or Lincecum as they could become 150-200 mil players (each) and they already have one Barry Zito.
"We lose to Stanford in many sports, but if you want to make a Cal team quit, bring a weapon."

Alderson is good, but he’s no Lincecum. He was projected to be a 3rd starter type.
The #1 greatest threat to America: BEARS
[3rd starter] on which team? The Giants [w/ Cain & Lincecum – 2 of the 5 best pitchers in baseball] or a team like the A’s [Braden was opening day starter – FML]?

He was going to be a good 4th starter or a great 5th starter in that future Giant rotation, because Bumgarner is better.

I’d say right up until the Giants meltdown in Game 6 in the WS (2002), he was one of the best in the game.
Then, he thought the Giants success was due to “veterans” who were really really old and/or not as good as they used to be.
The youth movement has been intriguing but inconsistent.
Sanche, while a fine player, definitely isn’t what they needed offensively as he’s a singles hitter. Garko’s a below average offensively and a tank defensively. Plus he’s a furd grad.

Not a great trade, but Giants fans are overreacting big time.
Sabean, for all his faults, has employed one strategy to great success: Trading away pitching prospects for proven commodities. The Giants have traded away Boof Bonser, Jason Grilli, Nate Bump, Damian Moss, and Kurt Ainsworth. None of them has had a significant impact in the pros. Here’s the list of Giants pitching prospects who have had a significant impact:
Francisco Liriano (injuries have since seriously limited his value)
Joe Nathan
Now, having said that, the Pirates were desperate to get rid of Sanchez to save money, and the Giants could have gotten more for Alderson. BUT – I’m not going to lay awake in bed worrying about Alderson becoming a dominant starter. Maybe it will happen, but the Giants have traded away enough pitchers who fail for me to have confidence in their ability to predict who will have success at the major league level. Credit needs to go to Sabean for holding onto guys who DO make it as pros – guys like Russ Ortiz, Shawn Estes (for a few years, anyway), Matt Cain (ERA at 2.12 now) and of course Tim Lincecum.
Still, I wish we had gotten somebody else from the Pirates, gotten the Pirates to pay more of Sanchez’s salary, or given away a less highly touted prospect. But freaking out about it is an extreme overreaction.
The #1 greatest threat to America: BEARS
Keith Foulke…was a pretty good closer for awhile there. I believe he was in the famed Alvaraz, Darwin, Hernandez deal that made the ’97 (is that right?) Giants magic(k)al. You know…Brian Johnson going deep off the Dodgers in extras.
Here’s a question I have for you and other Giants fans.
Lincecum and Cain are both a) fantastic, b) cheap currently (relatively) and c) will become VERY rich either on the Giants or for some other team.
What if they could fetch the hottest up-and-coming hitter for one of these guys. A true dynamic 3/4 hitter (Josh Hamilton?) that could potentially be so good that he has a shot at the Hall of Fame. Would they do it knowing they could only afford one of these pitchers, have a need for a dynamic offensive player, and have a plethora of pitching prospects?
"We lose to Stanford in many sports, but if you want to make a Cal team quit, bring a weapon."
--Coach Clark
Keith Foulke played for both Bay Area teams? That I did not know.

Foulke was a Giants farmhand…I don’t think he ever made it to SF
"We lose to Stanford in many sports, but if you want to make a Cal team quit, bring a weapon."
--Coach Clark
I don’t know if they make the trade, but I don’t think money would cause it to happen because any hitter that good would cost just as much if not more than Cain or Lincecum.
After these trades the Giants aren’t very deep in pitching prospects anymore, so trading Cain (which the fanbase would hate) would be practically impossible
