Jeff Tedford LiveChat With Jonathan Okanes, 7/28 10:30am-11:30am
Tuesday, 7/28, at 10:30am Jon Okanes will have a Livechat with Cal head coach Jeff Tedford. As with the Jahvid Best livechat, let's aim to flood JO with as many excellent questions as possible. Personally, I would focus on questions outside the norm: there are sure to be plenty of average questions from other folks.
Post your questions for Jeff Tedford in this thread and, please, rec the best ones. We'll compile the best ones to ask right before the chat goes live.
The opinions expressed in a FanPost are, in every way, reflective of the opinions of every California Golden Blogs Marshawnthusiast. Moreover, they are reflective of every employee of SBNation, including Tyler "Blez" Bleszinski.

We need help. We get pestered by Furd, UCLA, and USC fans as well as the Liberal Elitist Media™ who all say “Meh, Cal is improved but are they ever going to turn the corner?” How would you respond to that? PS – if you leave for the NFL or some college team that will actually reach a BCS game, I know where you, Donna, and the kids live over in the ’hawk. And I have expert legal advice.

Do you wish the Bay Area (i.e., the fans that have not set foot in Memorial but attend several pathetic Raiders, Warriors, Niners, Giants, and A’s games, as well as the May-version of the Sharks) actually got excited for Cal football? Is it frustrating that we don’t have sellouts for every game as well as better radio and TV coverage since you’ve assembled one of the best athletic teams in the area?

Which team do you think was better? 2004 or 2006?
It’s 1st and 10 on your own 20. If you had a choice, who would you rather have as your running back, Jahvid Best or Marshawn Lynch?
What made you hire Tosh Lupoi in the first place and did you ever think he’d ever be the recruiting guru that he is?
What would you say is your biggest weakness?
by elbarto83 on Jul 14, 2009 5:12 PM PDT reply actions 3 recs
I think the Tosh Lupoi one is a really good question to ask. I get the feeling we’d get really politically correct answers for some of the other ones, like the 2004/2006 and Best/Lynch question. Something like “Both teams were so good, it’s so tough to choose between the two, next question please, oh ya, man, both RBs are so good, they bring so much to the table, Best with his speed, Lynch with his power, next question please.” Tedford is too vanilla, I fear, to give honest answers to some of those questions.

I rec’d it because Tedford has a history of bland and neutral responses. We know he won’t answer judgement questions deciding between past players or teams. We shouldn’t waste time or effort on those types of questions. I felt that was your point, I agreed, I rec’d.
Also, if anyone asks a Longshore v. Riley question, they are getting a slap.

You’ve long been described as a quarterback “guru”, yet your teams at Cal have arguably produced a longer list of great running backs. We know you preach balance on offense, but if push came to shove, which extreme would you rather have: an offense that can run the ball at will but struggles in the passing game (a la the great wishbone offenses of the ’70s and ’80s at Oklahoma and Nebraska) or an offense that piles up the passing yards a la the old Houston teams, or more recently, Hawaii and Texas Tech? Be director of the Student Section for a moment. Does it make a difference if students make noise while the opposing offense is still in the huddle? Are there cheers you are particularly fond of? Would you encourage more participation in “Fourth Quarters, Ours!”? When should the band play, and when should they not? Should the Student Section be gender segregrated like olden times? Would it make your year to hear the Trojan Marching Band start to play “Conquest” at Memorial Stadium, then hear the partisan Bear crowd in unison, “Beat… the TROJANS!” ? Are you a proponent of rushing the field after significant victories? Does screaming when the opposing punt return fields a catch have any meaningful impact? What should be chanted after the ball is kicked off: “Ooooo0o0o0oo…. (ball is kicked) ___blank______.” When playing on the road, do you notice a difference between student sections on the 50-yard line versus elsewhere around the stadium? Would you please talk to security guards to allow free access between student section and young alumni sections?

In recent years, Cal’s special teams’ defense has been horrendous and been a dominant factor in at least one Cal loss per year. Why has a coaching change not been made?

Tough question. I’d like to see Tedford answer this question (that doesn’t mean I necessarily agree that a coaching change is needed). But this is such a tough question that I’m pretty sure it won’t get through.

Of all the coaches on roster, Cal fans have been the most critical of Pete Alamar due to special team failures that have led to losses. Many Cal fans want to see Alamar replaced. Can you tell us the positives that Alamar brings to the program that has kept him around?

Yeah. Chowder asks the same question above mine, but it’s worded sort of negatively and I HIGHLY doubt Tedford would field that question. I sort of phrased the question in a more positive manner but it basically asks the same thing. I think Tedford and Yokanes would be more likely to allow my question through because it sounds more positive. No offense to Chowder. I do like Chowder’s question but I just don’t think it’d have any chance at making it through the way it was phrased by Chowder.

Do you think naming the starting QB (either privately or publicly) early on at the start of practice will help build continuity in the passing game? Does this theory apply to other passing game positions like WR, TE, and FB? What date do you have in mind for naming starters (again, either privately or publicly)?

Are you included in the group to have to take a paycut and or furlough? I figure your salary gets paid by booster and/or football revenue. Nonetheless, many UC researchers get their salaries paid by federal and private sources. Should they be furloughed while you are not?

actually this is an interesting question
from a recent column by Pat Forde on ESPN.com:
In fact, while Tennessee basketball coach Bruce Pearl was just awarded a contract extension and a $200,000 raise, and Louisville just hired Ralph Willard at about $350,000 a year to be an assistant, others are taking a hit in the wallet. At Arizona State, Dennis Erickson and Herb Sendek were part of a mandatory 12-day furlough for all university employees. In recent months, Purnell and Swinney took five-day furloughs as part of a campus-wide cutback at Clemson.
Neither Purnell nor Swinney even knows which week he went without pay. Neither of them is a 9-to-5, punch-the-clock guy, by nature or job description, and neither thought for a second about actually not working during his furlough.
“It was sometime in the spring — my secretary picked the days,” said Swinney, who helped lead a donation campaign at the spring football game for lower-salaried Clemson employees hit harder by the furloughs. “The people who were most affected are the hourly workers. If you’re making $25,000 a year, five days off is going to hurt you a lot more.”
So, basically, you gotta Go Bears!

Yeah…I don’t see why non-state supported salaries should be cut if the state is the one not holding up to its end of the bargain. I especially don’t understand how some groups (like profs) who are not supported by the state have to take furlough days while other groups (like coaches/ADs) who are also not supported by the state do not. My guess is that Tedford and other UC coaches will be exempt from furloughs.
I’d love to know how much athletic revenue gets pumped back into the University. When a prof gets a grant, it feeds many mouths. Is it comparable (to athletic revenue? Do we a larger percentage of that revenue into coaches than the UC does with it’s profs?

looks like Yudof might not make non-state supported UC employees take part in this furlough action. Of course, he’s been speaking vaguely and we don’t have final details as of yet. Nonetheless, it would be interesting to see how furloughs impact the athletic department.

Road games
Beginning with the Tennessee game in 2006, Cal has not played to the same level on the road that it has achieved at home. What factors have you identified as causing this tendency and what steps do you plan on employing to negate these factors? Can the wider Cal community play a role in aiding the team’s road performance?

We’ve seen this offseason that the new arms race in college football is top-notch assistant coaches. Cal has some excellent assistant coaches who could be viewed as highly valuable additions to other programs. I’d be shocked if the names of Lupoi, Gould, Marshall, and Thompson aren’t familiar to the major players in college football. Is Cal in a position to financially keep up with this latest trend and retain these coaches? Or are we going to get outbid by other “football” schools?

This is a pretty interesting question that I would like answered; however, it still may be too soon for this. The 2007 debacle was only two years ago. Although perhaps with the team’s new emphasis on team goals rather than individual accomplishments that he’ll allow the names to be put back on.

It's 4th and goal on the 1-yard line and you're trailing by three
Do you:
A) Run Forsett up the middle for no gain
B) Longshore drop back and sacked
C) Tau’faou up the middle for a one yard loss
D) Give up

Because I've been reading Smart Football a lot lately, schematic questions:
Have you given any consideration to expanding Cal’s Wildcat package, for example to include some of the fly sweep/play faking aspects Arkansas and other teams have used?
Have you had a chance to take a look at what Chris Ault has done with the Pistol formation at Nevada, and if you have would you consider adding it to Cal’s offensive repertoire?
