DBD 7.01.09 Happy Canada Day!
Hello friends and lovers, its me, rollonubears! (bonus points if you know what show I'm referencing). Today is Canada Day, or, as those in the U.S. call it, the first day of July. Many exciting things happening today, like the start of the free agency period in the NHL (and I believe the NBA as well). I am going to be a wreck all day, worrying about whether or not the Sedins will resign with the Canucks. I presume Rated-R Superstar will leave 450 links today about NBA free agency happenings.
Discussion topic of the day: Favorite movies. Name them all. No need for a top 5 or anything.
My favorites: Apocalypse Now, The Dark Knight, Anchorman, Talladega Nights, Walk Hard, Heat, Adaptation, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, When the Levees Broke, V for Vendetta, Tropic Thunder, Step Brothers, and probably some more if I think of them.
How about you guys?

*sigh* ...for the last time, it's NEVER lupus!
The Real Reason for Michael Jackson’s Death? His Secret Fatal Illness
Was the King of pop really felled by prescription drug use and abuse ? Those who speculate on this theory could be dead wrong! Instead, Michael could very well be the victim of the lupus he suffered from.
But she seems so sure…and her sources are irrefutable!
Did you know that Michael Jackson, was the victim of a rare auto-immune disease called lupus? Yes, he was according to his Wikipedia biography and as it turns out — lupus sufferers frequently die in their 40s and 50’s from sudden heart attacks, caused by atherosclerosis.
Geez people, just let the poor man rest in peace already…
I haven't seen that many tear-stained dollar bills since my dad hired a stripper for my uncle's funeral.
Aw crap, I'm unemployed
What does it say when a player like Leon Powe, a great human being, who played through injury and pain for three straight years for the Boston Celtics, including in a playoff game after tearing his ACL, is rewarded by the team saying to him “we only have a short window to win, and you are not a part of our plans because you are now injured.”
From TrueHoop
I totally need to put in the good word with Rod Thorn for you. Massive upgrade over Yi Jianlian.
Still holding out hope that Ryan Anderson will capitulate and grant him that interview he's been asking for for months now.
Yi Jianlian
pisses me off, because he’s what would come out if one was trying to build a power forward for the 2009 NBA season.
7’ tall. Can handle the ball, run the floor, jump, and 3 point shooting range. When interested he can block shots and rebound too.
But he never seems to be able to put it all together.
I spent much of the Olympics yelling “Yi! DO SOMETHING!!!!” and he wouldn’t.
That’s what I would have been yelling had I been awake for any of China’s games. I hadn’t yet caught onto how disappointing he would be in the NBA at that point though.
Still holding out hope that Ryan Anderson will capitulate and grant him that interview he's been asking for for months now.
Speaking of Yi, with Yao's injury
From NetsDaily:
The Nets have lauded Yi in the days since the draft and Vince Carter trade, saying he is the "incumbent" at the power forward position and that they continue to have high hopes for him, surprising reporters and fans alike.
In his conference call with season ticket holders, Thorn explained, "Yi has been working out since a week after the season with one of the top trainers in America, trying to get stronger upper body wise. I saw him in the gym today. He’s 10 pounds bigger, MUCH more definition in his chest and arms. Our feeling is that as he gets stronger, particularly in his upper body, it will help him defend his position better and it will also help his offense, make it much more difficult to knock him off balance.
"Yi has terrific athletic ability. There’s no reason if he gets stronger and continues to have that same GREAT attitude that he shouldn’t be a viable NBA player."
What was left unsaid was how the Nets have played a delicate game with the CBA to get him more training time in the US. They have argued, as did the Rockets with Yao, that NBA-level training is a winner for both sides, that a stronger, more skilled–and more rested– Yi is more likely to help China win in international competition.
Yi has always deferred to Yao. Now, he’ll be forced to be a leader, if not THE leader, for Team China in Tianjin, a chance perhaps to work his way out of Yao’s giant shadow, a shadow that officials in both Houston and Beijing fear may soon fade.
Still holding out hope that Ryan Anderson will capitulate and grant him that interview he's been asking for for months now.
Pfft
Wang Zhizhi is still the leader for China. He was the only Chinese player (well and Zhu Fangyu) to have any balls to shoot (well they couldn’t get the ball to Yao because he was always being draped by 3 Spainards or Germans or whomever).
Wang and Zhu were great in the Olympics. Yi only showed up for one game. Kid has all the physical talent in the world, but he needs the attitude to dominate. If he had Yao’s work ethic and heart, he’d be – I dunno . . .a more athletic Dirk Nowitzki?

We’ll see how close Dick Vitale’s prediction that Curry will be the Rookie of the Year is to reality, how the offseason three-a-day workouts have helped the Anthonys (Morrow and Randolph), and whether Lawrence Hill of Stanford and Jamal Sampson of Cal are simply feel-good stories or have the potential to make the regular-season roster.

Natalie Coughlin and Dana Vollmer get ESPY noms:
BERKELEY – Former California swimming stars Natalie Coughlin and Dana Vollmer were nominated for 2009 ESPY awards. Coughlin, who starred at the 2008 Summer Olympic Games, is vying for the Best Female Athlete award, while Vollmer, the 2009 NCAA and Pac-10 Swimmer of the Year, is nominated in the Best Female Collegiate Athlete category. Fans have the chance to select the winners by voting online at www.ESPYS.tv. The ESPY award ceremony takes place on Wednesday, July 15, at the Nokia Theater in downtown Los Angeles and will be hosted by actor Samuel L. Jackson.
Coughlin became the first U.S. women’s athlete to win six medals in one Olympiad when she won one gold (100-meter backstroke), two silver (4×100-meter freestyle relay and 4×100-meter medley relay) and three bronze (100-meter freestyle, 200-meter individual medley and 4×200-meter freestyle relay) medals last summer in Beijing. Along with the five Olympic medals she won in 2004, Coughlin has attained 11 career Olympic medals, one shy of 2008 Olympic teammate Dara Torres and former U.S. star Jenny Thompson, who are tied for the record for most Olympic women’s swimming medals with 12. Coughlin is tied with former Cal men’s swimmer Matt Biondi with the most Olympic medals by any Cal athlete. She won 12 NCAA titles while at Cal.
In 2008-09, her final season as a Golden Bear, Vollmer won two individual titles, two relay titles and the overall team championship with Cal in March at the NCAA Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships in College Station, Texas. She also won the 2008-09 Honda Sports Award as the nation’s best swimmer. Vollmer, a 2004 Olympic gold medalist for the United States, won the 100- and 200-yard freestyles and was a member of the winning 400- and 800-yard freestyle relays for the Bears at NCAAs in 2009. She also won a 2007 NCAA title in the 100-yard butterfly. Along with Coughlin in 2004, Vollmer won an Olympic gold medal as part of the winning U.S. 800-free relay.

Obesity rates among adults rose in 23 states over the past year and didn’t decline anywhere, says a new report from the Trust for America’s Health and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.

_Colorado had the lowest rate of obese adults, at 18.9 percent, followed by Massachusetts, 21.2 percent; and Connecticut, 21.3 percent.
_Mississippi also had the highest rate of overweight and obese children, at 44.4 percent. It’s followed by Arkansas, 37.5 percent; and Georgia, 37.3 percent.

Side note: I made the WORST food I have EVER eaten a couple nights ago. Basically I had two cucumbers and some celery I needed to use up. So I sauteed them with some olive oil, garlic, and onions, and a little salt and pepper. That might have been ok right there, but then I stupidly added balsamic vinegar (barf) and dijon mustard (BARF EXTREME). I cooked it down for a while, let it cool, and tried some: it tasted like vomit mixed with chemicals. I immediately threw all of it away. Cooking phail.

I think it’s b/c when it’s deep fried, the skin of the hot dog rips open. The natural casing comes out crispy like bacon.. then it pops with juices when you bite into it (no gay jokes pls).
That’s surprisingly less unpleasant than I thought the answer would be.

haha rec’d for drive-by argument!
Too bad you can’t see the wonder of collard greens. Maybe you haven’t had them prepared right? If they’re not cooked well (if I cook them, for example), they’re pretty bad. But when they’re good (like when my mom or grandma cook them), they’re sooooo good.
(and good for you)
CGB: Wasting Your Potential, Your Time, & Your Life Since 2006.
Collard greens can be palatable. It’s the grits I can’t stand. I’ve tried them all the ways too. Sugar, syrup, butter, hot sauce, jelly, some other random crap. I guess it’s a texture issue.
Remember, the enemy's end zone is DOWN!
wow, all those sound incredibly disgusting to me except the butter.
I usually go with salt and a little butter.
Or just bacon. Cook like 2 strips of bacon and break them up (big or small pieces, doesn’t matter) in the grits. The bacon usually brings enough salt to the party on its own. If not, add a little salt. Soooo good.
CGB: Wasting Your Potential, Your Time, & Your Life Since 2006.
My cousins in Austin insist that the grits are well-prepared as either a desserty-breakfasty sweet dish, which leads them to pile on the sugar and jelly, or as a savory salty thing. The hot sauce was my idea, as I am convinced that Cholula makes anything taste better.
Remember, the enemy's end zone is DOWN!

But it was entertaining, the robots were cool and lots of things exploded. $9 well spent although it was 20 minutes too long…

I understand why you took your 5 year old, but I can’t believe the producers allowed so many bad words to be included in the movie knowing that kids would be seeing it. There were a lot of kids in the theater when I went to see it, and I was a little annoyed at all the explicatives….okay, it wasn’t like one per minute but there were at least a dozen “asshole”, “shit”, and I think an f-bomb or two.

When I went to see the movie Hannibal. You know…. Hannibal Lectur (sp?). Some parents brought their 4 & 6 year old kids. WHY!?!?! They show a Anthony Hopkins eating Ray Liotta’s brain!
Yeah I just don’t get it. Some of the parents that do that, I wonder if they even care about the effect on their kids. Most of them appear to be trash anyway, but some of them seem like normal families.
I still remember when I was around 8 or 9, I was watching a WWII movie with my dad and someone in the movie said “son of a bitch”….when I repeated the phrase, my dad made sure I understood that it wasn’t ok to use those words. I guess times have changed.

When I saw Saving Private Ryan, a large rush of people flooded towards the door in an attempt to get their kids to avoid watching the Normandy scene.
That was intense. The scene where the guy is desperately trying to stuff his intestines back inside the gaping hole in his abdomen will never leave me. Just like the curb scene in American History X.
I like the way they did Band of Brothers, which I just watched for the first time. It was gory but not horrifyingly so. Horrifying and memorable in a different way, like when the American taunts a German prisoner who turns out to be from Eugene, Oregon (no doubt a Ducks fan), befriends him, then watches as the guy is executed. Sad. Tragic. War. Memorable.

Transformers 2
All the reviews are correct: this is a loud, ridiculous, at times incomprehensible mess of a movie. Stuff sometimes happens for no discernible reason; more often, it happens because that’s what movie clichés tell you should happen, not due to any internal logic in the script. Much (if not all) of the “plot” is merely a thinly-veiled excuse to get Characters A and B to Location C, and near then end, even inventing such excuses seemed to be too much trouble for the screenwriter.
Even taking on faith the concept that there are two warring groups of giant cybernetic robots from space who can transform into common machinery found on earth, regardless of the relative mass of the objects transformed between, and they have now come to Earth to continue their eternal struggle for control of the Energon that powers their machinery and the galaxy, even taking all that on faith, the movie still veers off its own internal logic axis at times.
Of course, just because I have yet to mention the acting or the dialogue doesn’t mean they’re above reproach. Heck, I even found fault with the cinematography (too close to the robots at times, especially during transformation — hard to tell what was what, and which robots were which). If any of this sounds like it would be a problem for you, don’t bother seeing this movie.
However, as Fire Starkey mentioned, a review like this kinda misses the point. This is a “turn brain off” type of movie. Imagine an 8-year-old playing with toys in the living room, with his friend filming in the corner with his dad’s home movie recorder. Some action figures are introduced, and the 8-year-old starts speaking for the action figures, explaining where they are and why they are fighting. Then they fight for a while, and the kid makes some explosion noises with his mouth. Some toy trucks get knocked over. He then takes the surviving action figures across the room to the couch, with those left behind having been deemed “dead”. Some more fighting takes place. One of the action figures finds the “object of power” which should make him ultimately victorious. The item was hidden between the couch cushions, because, well, why not? More fighting, more explosion sounds. Much more. Some toy cars are thrown across the room, and some toy buildings are knocked over, including that one made from Lincoln Logs that took two hours to build. The boy intersperses his explosion noises with some clichéd dialogue he saw on TV last weekend. By now, there is a huge fight going on, and action figures are strewn everywhere, most considered “dead”. The kid runs to his room quickly to get more toys to introduce into the fight, including some helicopters and his Power Rangers action figures, because at this point, who the heck cares? At least one of the action figures the boy said was “dead” earlier comes back to life to have a decisive role in the battle, and the good guys are ultimately victorious. Now the kid is tired, and it’s time to go get some juice.
Michael Bay is that 8-year-old, but with a giant special-effects budget to work with. It sounds awesome, doesn’t it? If you’re drunk and treating this movie as the biggest-budget version of MST3K ever, I think you’ll enjoy yourself immensely. Also, Megan Fox does a lot of slow-motion running, which is nice.
So, basically, you gotta Go Bears!

It’s very tongue-in-cheek, very funny, and you would enjoy it.

It’s not as bad as all the reviews make it out to be. It’s not amazing, but it was fairly enjoyable and I didn’t leave the theater sorry that I had seen it.

Yeah, I thought so.
Here’s my list:
The Seven Samurai, Big Lebowski, Fargo, Airplane!, Blazing Saddles, Die Hard, A Better Tomorrow, Tampopo, God of Cookery, Enter the Dragon, Big Trouble in Little China, Reservoir Dogs, the first half of Office Space, O Brother, Where Art Thou?, Ghostbusters, Snatch, Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, The French Connection, The Taking of Pelham 123 (the original), The Untouchables, Godfather and The Little Mermaid.
I liked the movie but it was just a bit too violent for me to love it. Same thing with Fight Club.

for those who don't know - 'The Evil Dead' is not comedic at all.
it’s just a straight-up horror movie, and a really creepy one at that. Now, I hate horror movies – they scare me so much, it’s ridiculous, give me nightmares, ugh. I’d seen Army of Darkness, and thought it was funny. So recently, before going to see Evil Dead: The Musical (which is hilarious and awesome, by the way), I figured I’d catch up on the other 2 movies.
I got through about 30 minutes of The Evil Dead before I had to cut it off.
I just read the synopsis of Evil Dead II on Wikipedia, couldn’t even bring myself to watch it. I mean, I’ve seen the snippets of the parts where Ash really becomes “Ash”, with the chainsaw and all, and that was enough. In the end, I was glad I’d seen what I saw of The Evil Dead, because the musical would have made much less sense if I hadn’t – but still… yipes.
CGB: Wasting Your Potential, Your Time, & Your Life Since 2006.
The original ED is indeed not intentionally funny. ED II has intentional moments of hilarity. AoD is pure comedy. Too bad you can’t watch ED II, because it is the best of the bunch for balance of awesome horror and comedy.

I think driving is really fun — or at least, can be, if you’re not stuck in traffic or some such. Others don’t really like it, or just aren’t into it.
General rule: if someone (in America) drives a manual transmission, it means they really like driving. An automatic means that they just use the car to get from point A to point B.

Ever drive on the Pasadena Freeway?
The Pasadena Freeway (the 110) was the first freeway in California and, even though driving norms have severely changed since 1940, this freeway has not, and so is now insanely evil. On this freeway exist the most insane onramps ever. Not only are the onramps only about 50 feet long, it has stop signs at the juncture of the onramp and the freeway. You have to jump onto the freeway from a dead stop with zero merging distance.
On top of that, when merging onto the 10 Freeway (a major artery in SoCal), the 110 drops you off in the fast lane. F***ing crazy.

There are also many onramps like this in Hawaii. I don’t know why they make it so difficult to get on the freeway there (and the speed limit there is 45 mph).
It’s fun once you get used to it. If you’re a cautious person, you’ll end up making a good driver.
Honestly, it probably takes about 5 years before someone is a really good driver. People are decent drivers before then, and they think they’re really good drivers, but it takes a while before everything becomes second nature. In my opinion, anyway.

Found this on a forum, not mine (just C+P'd)
I am not Roman Catholic, but I know that the official position of the Roman Catholic can be found in the revised Catechism of the Catholic Church (1992). It states:
"By masturbation is to be understood the deliberate stimulation of the genital organs in order to derive sexual pleasure. ‘Both the Magisterium of the Church, in the course of a constant tradition, and the moral sense of the faithful have been in no doubt and have firmly maintained that masturbation is an intrinsically and gravely disordered action.’ ‘The deliberate use of the sexual faculty, for whatever reason, outside of marriage is essentially contrary to its purpose.’ For here sexual pleasure is sought outside of ’the sexual relationship which is demanded by the moral order and in which the total meaning of mutual self-giving and human procreation in the context of true love is achieved."
This is their official position, but they add that it is proper to take into account emotional immaturity, force of habit, a state of anguish, or other mental or social factors which lessen, indeed even extenuate, the individual’s moral guilt.
How that really works out in a Catholic’s life I do not know. The best person to ask would be a parish priest.

How many of the 120 Division I-A schools’ bands do you think will play a Michael Jackson medley this season?
— @GatorRock
I couldn’t begin to guess, but you’ve put an idea in my head. I am almost 99 percent certain I watched just such a halftime tribute at one of the games I covered last season, but I can’t for the life of me remember which one. I do remember it opened with Thriller.
It seems only right the Mailbag should do some sort of salute to the Man Who Made Weird Al’s Career, so here’s what I’m going to do. If you happen to be a member of the band in question (or any other college band that’s performed a halftime MJ medley), and you have the video to prove it, send me the link or YouTube code and I’ll include it next week.

The senior-to-be, who in May committed to attend the University of California and play for the Golden Bears in 2010, is headed to Hawaii for a select quarterback camp.
One of the most highly recruited players in the country at his position, the 6-foot-4, 182-pound Hinder has been selected for a quarterback challenge under tutelage involving Hall of Famer Joe Montana.
At the Steve Clarkson Academy, Hinder will be one of the “Super Seven” competing Thursday through Saturday, along with other top-flight high school quarterbacks including Montana’s son, Nick, who has pledged to attend the University of Washington.

NEED HELP
So I just moved into a new place and one of my first orders of business is to get a new computer since my current one is so busted that it randomly overheats and shuts off if I so much as watch a YouTube video for too long. What kind of computer should I be looking for? My brother tells me that I should get a Mac, but I don’t really want to pay a premium to have a computer capable of doing stuff that I won’t be asking it to do. I just need to be able to go on the Internet, and burn DVDs really. Recommendations?
Still holding out hope that Ryan Anderson will capitulate and grant him that interview he's been asking for for months now.
Step 1) Become a member of my family
2) Have my really awesome uncle who always gets me cool stuff build you a new computer from scratch, like he did for me (This is my 2nd week using it)
3) Enjoy the superspeed and the super nice video card.

1)Desktop or laptop?
2)What else will you be using it for besides internet/DVDs?
3)What’s your price range?
1) Open to either, but I’m not married to the idea of getting a laptop so I figure a desktop would be more cost-effective.
2) Not a whole lot else. I don’t play games on PC, cut videos or any of that crap that you see in Mac commercials.
3) I’d say up to 800 or so, but I’d want to pick up a decent sized monitor too, so I’d imagine that limits the processing speed/power I could get. Although given what I’m planning on using it for, I don’t need a ultra high-end machine anyway.

Still holding out hope that Ryan Anderson will capitulate and grant him that interview he's been asking for for months now.
by yellow fever on Jul 1, 2009 12:46 PM PDT up reply actions
For the cost of a normal laptop, you can buy a netbook and a decent desktop. That’s what I did. I have a Dell Mini 9 with Ubuntu and it’s great. I’ve had it for almost 9 months and I’ve had no problems. The SSD hard drive is fantastic. Naturally, the screen isn’t one you can spend hours looking at but if you hook it up to an external display you should be fine.
Whose domicile? OUR DOMICILE!
I would suggest thinking about a cheap Dell. Given what you’re looking for, it makes sense to minimize your costs – you’re not going to gain anything substantive by getting a higher-performance model. And you can put that money towards a better monitor.
I just checked the Dell website – you can get a decent run-of-the-mill desktop with a DVD-RW for around $350.
Upgrade to dual DVD+Blu-ray drives and a 20 inch monitor is around $650 (the monitor is about $200 of that). Upgrade the processor/RAM a little more and it’s around $750. There might be shipping costs too, I didn’t check.
Building a system yourself is the best way. If I were you I would go on craigslist and email one of those guys that will build a system for you. Give him a price range, your needs and also give him the following requirements:
1) Low maintenance and must be able to maintain good airflow without dusting for four years.
2) Must be future proof with focus on low heat, low noise.
3) Priority goes to: 1) Memory, 2) Hard drive longevity, 3) CPU, 4) low heat
I would also pre-order a copy of Windows 7 home prem right now for half price:

Actually, Royrules should be able to help out too.
I built the system I described (mostly the same) for my best friend just 3 months ago.. he asked for a sub $500 system with speed, 4gigs of ram and something that should last 5 years at least.
I have a slightly more powerful system, but I do own these WD hard drives and can vouch for them… and I own a Corsair power supply too.
I did have a summer job way back like ten years ago putting computers together which mostly consisted of taking part A and sticking it into slot B ad nauseum. If those are all the parts I need and it should be easy enough to put together, I can do it myself. After all, I’ve just spent the last three days putting together Ikea furniture too.

For best bang for buck… you can’t go wrong with 8800GTX…
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130325
Then again, I’m not a PC gamer… so it’ prob would help to ask someone who is really into PC gaming.
8800 is great, but probably more than you need to spend. I don’t know that much about video cards but I think a lower end 8000 model might be a good option.
What's your ideal sub-500 build?
I went with P31 cuz it’s cheap… and since I’m suggesting sticking with Core2 and DDR2 800 RAM… there is no need for P45 chipset.
That antec case focuses on keeping the HDs cool over the CPU and has a bottom mounting power supply. It also mounts three 120mm fans so its super-duper quiet.
8800GTS is, I think, the best sub $100 card out there right now… and I think you have to spend at least that much to play most modern games without frame drops.
Yeah that makes sense. I actually almost bought the same case last year but got a Cooler Master instead because it was on sale. Like I said, I don’t know that much about video cards, but if he’s not playing games he may not want to spend ~$100 on the 8800.
Whoops. I didn’t know that Feva didn’t play games. Neither do I… I have a 7600GT in my main home machine right now. The last comp game I’ve played is FarCry years ago. If that’s the case, just get something that cost $30 and forget it. Unelss you plan on playing BluRay… then you have to get something half decent and supports BluRay hardware acceleration.
That’s a good build (except maybe the P31) but he’s probably spending about $100 more than what he needs. Actually more like $200 because that Windows 7 deal is an upgrade only, so he’d have to buy Vista anyway.
whoops, forgot the DVD drive. Plextor is the best and supports the most of the no-name brand DVDs out there.

Fantasy Football anyone?
Yahoo! opened registration for Fantasy Football for 2009. As big of a football fan as I am, I’ve never been a huge fan of fantasy football, since it pains me to root for anyone but the Eagles and I always feel like I stay with players for too long waiting for them to break out, while neglecting the fact that each season is so short there’s not much point to doing that.
That said, if there’s interest, I’m more than willing to start, join, or be the commissioner of a league.

It seems like all the reviews I read for laptops are for “gamers”—and truthfully, it’s tough to tell whether to purchase top of the line components when all I use it for is work (well, I have a desktop at work, but I use it when I work from home) and surfing the internet.
I was checking out the Dell XPS 16 (I believe), and it seemed like a good choice….until I read 100 comments about it overheating because of ventiliation issues. Also, does anyone have an opinion on whether it;s preferable to buy from Dell (and wait three-six weeks to get your laptop) or simply go to Best Buy and have it that day?

Dell laptops can be iffy. But they’re priced well. I really like Fujitsus but they’re slightly overpriced.
May I ask you to expand a litte? Iffy in what way? I only ask because my current laptop (the one that is dying) is a Dell. I’ve had it for 5+ years and not one problem. That’s why I was leaning towards buying another one.
The major complaints I’ve read about the model I’m interested in is the overheating I referenced above. That concerns me.
I’ve heard complaints from a number of people is all. I don’t think they’re insta-fail or anything, just somewhat more likely to do so than an IBM or Fujitsu. Which makes sense, because they’re significantly cheaper than an IBM or Fujitsu.
Unfortunately, I’ve never used a Dell laptop, so I can’t help you as far as specific models go. What you’re doing (looking at reviews) is definitely the way to go.
OK, thanks. Maybe I’ll check in to IBM and Fujitsu then. My price range is $1500-1700, so I think I could go that route and still meet that.
I'd hit up HP

Ahh – I assume you were working with a somewhat lower budget. I don’t really know that much about higher end laptops, but (and I hate myself for saying this) in that price range you may want to look at Macs as well.
Yeah top of the line laptop not for gamers is definitely a Mac.

as a die-hard Bulls fan, I am one of the few who is indifferent towards potentially losing Gordon. I was hoping the Bulls would sign him to something less than 10m a year. At 11, it is slightly over what I was hoping for.
The main reason I am indifferent is that Gordon is simply one-dimensional. He can score. He can’t defend well, doesn’t dribble well, doesn’t set others up, and can’t rebound. If I’m paying someone over 10 mil a year I want them to be well-rounded, Gordon isn’t. Even when he scores, it is almost always off of an isolation play, which stops team interaction which does effect team defense.

Update: It is now believed that the Raptors are out of the running for Turkoglu.

U.S. Names potential host cities for a 2018/2022 World CupThe USA Bid Committee also released a short list of 45 stadiums associated with the 37 candidate host cities that represent a wide spectrum of facilities, including stadiums typically used for college and NFL football, domed and retractable roof stadiums, and venues with seating capacities ranging from 45,000-plus to more than 100,000. Forty-four of the 45 stadiums currently exist or are under construction, while one is in the planning stages. A list of the finalists can be found at the end of this news release.
The shortlist of venues comes as a result of an eight-week process where all 58 stadiums that had originally expressed their interest in being considered for the USA’s Bid, were asked to provide detailed information in a questionnaire that reflected strict FIFA requirements.
Some of these are ridiculously entertaining. Imagine hundreds of thousands of foreign soccer fans descending on such metropolises as Fayetteville or Birmingham. The culture shock would be high high hilarity.

I now have a link for that Randolph-for-Richardson swap which sends Zach Randolph to the Grizzlies for Quentin Richardson.
The move allows L.A. to clear space for No. 1 draft pick Blake Griffin while unloading Randolph’s contract, which pays $33.3 million over the next two seasons. Richardson’s deal expires next summer, giving the Clippers financial flexibility to pursue 2010’s bumper crop of free agents. The deal won’t be official until July 8th.

How the hell do grapefruit company owners make enough money to have heirs? At least the Hilton’s are genuinely wealthy.
well, this doesn’t relate directly to grapefruit, but fruit/veggies are big business. In california, for example:
Nationally, products exclusively grown (99% or more) in California include almonds, artichokes, dates, figs, kiwifruit, olives, persimmons, pistachios, prunes, raisins, clovers, and walnuts.
California is the nation’s leading producer of strawberries, averaging 1.4 billion pounds of strawberries or 83% of the country’s total fresh and frozen strawberry production.
if you’ve got a major stake in one of those crops, especially if you control the nation’s supply – you’d make some ridiculous cash.

Speaking of the Knicks, that was one thing that I never understood about the Lebron to NY talk. Why would LeBron go to the Knicks if they’re further away from winning a ring than the Cavs are?
CGB: Wasting Your Potential, Your Time, & Your Life Since 2006.
He loves the city and the city loves him. It’s been rumored ever since he joined the league that he has wanted to play in NY. By 2010 Donnie Walsh will (hopefully) have enough money to sign LeBron and perhaps another huge free agent like Chris Bosh or Dwayne Wade (though Wade has expressed interest in staying in Miami). They’re trying to put together a young, talented team that, by the time LeBron arrives, will soon be a contender for the championship (hence that Ricky Rubio madness in NY last week). If LeBron proves he can lead a team to the finals all by himself (as he did in 2007 and, arguably, this year), he should be able to make it to the finals with whatever cast D’Antoni and Walsh can put together by 2010.
Whose domicile? OUR DOMICILE!
As reported earlier, the Grizzlies acquired power forward Zach Randolph from the Clippers.

Phoenix Suns general manager Steve Kerr called numerous free agents on Wednesday, including big men Antonio McDyess, Channing Frye, Sean May, Joe Smith and Chris Wilcox.
Grant Hill remains the Suns’ priority among free agents, though they obviously want to fortify their frontcourt now that Shaquille O’Neal has been traded. McDyess is also being wooed by the Pistons and a handful of championship contenders.

Here is apparently the latest involving Hedo Turkgolu.
The Raptors are said to be preparing to offer Hedo Turkoglu a five-year, $60 million contract, while the Blazers are looking at an offer of five years and $50 million for the swingman.
The Blazers appear to be closer to being a championship-caliber team, but money talks in free agency. Toronto would need to renounce the rights to Shawn Marion, Anthony Parker, Carlos Delfino, Patrick O’Bryant and Quincy Douby in order to make that kind of offer to Turkoglu, so it’s anyone’s guess as to which team he decides to deal with.

Josh Childress and his agent are scheduled to meet with Bucks officials on Thursday.
Childress can opt out of his contract with the Greek team Olympiacos, though technically he’s still the Hawks’ restricted free agent. The Bucks, who are in the market for a veteran small forward after trading Richard Jefferson, aren’t likely to offer more than the mid-level exception.

Orlando Magic general manager Otis Smith said on Wednesday that Orlando is prepared to pay a stiff luxury tax to keep restricted free agent big man Marcin Gortat.
“The owner said we can go into tax so that changes things,” Smith said. “At this point, we’re matching everything that comes back to us on him.”
The Rockets are doing everything they can to attract Gortat, and the Thunder, Pacers, Knicks and Pacers are also interested.

League sources indicated early Thursday that the Raptors are contemplating an offer to restricted free agent big man David Lee.
Any offer to Lee, by definition, would be in the $8-$10 million range and would test the Knicks in terms of their willingness to match a hefty offer.
Toronto is still considering whether or not to attempt to beat Portland’s offer for Hedo Turkoglu.

Trevor Ariza will become a very rich man at the hands of the team that loses out on Hedo Turkoglu according to Adrian Wojnarowski.
League executives believe Portland or Toronto, whichever team does not sign Turkoglu, will offer Ariza between $32 million and $40 million deal.

Jarrett Jack is possibly being pursued by the Atlanta Hawks, who have a hole at point guard after trading for combo guard Jamal Crawford, trading Acie Law, and possibly losing Mike Bibby to free agency.
Rookie Jeff Teague is really the only true point guard ready to roll for the Hawks, but Crawford should be able to competently handle the job. Jack went to school at Georgia Tech, and would probably not be opposed for a return to the ATL.

Denver Nuggets free agent swingman Dahntay Jones was contacted by the Pacers on Wednesday.
Jones is not an offensive juggernaut, but might be a great fit for the Pacers, who could use his defensive mentality. The Pacers also called about Nuggets free agents Anthony Carter and Linas Kleiza, and are also said to be interested in Magic big man Marcin Gortat.

I haven’t heard his name anywhere, but as far as the Celtics are concerned, here is some news on Kevin Garnett.
“The rehab is going very well, he is feeling great,” Celtics president of basketball operations Danny Ainge said of Garnett.
Also in that link is stuff about Powe, but it’s really nothing that we don’t already know.

It’s not free agent news, but it’s news.
Forward Michael Sweetney will play on the Celtics summer league team.
The No. 9 pick in the 2003 draft has had weight issues and was last waived by the Bulls. He’s unlikely to make an NBA roster next season, but it’s possible.

Free agent point guard Andre Miller wants a three-year deal for $30 million.
He’s been linked to the Pistons and Blazers, but they may not be able to offer what he’s looking for after Detroit agreed to terms with Charlie Villanueva and Ben Gordon, while the Blazers are pursuing Hedo Turkoglu. Miller may not get his asking price, and could even end up back in Philly for less money.
