DBD 6.5.09 Fashion Advice Pls

I've been holed up all week studying for the Level 2 CFA Exam.  According to the CFA Standards of Professional Conduct, that makes me a CFA Level 2 Candidate.  In addition, I'm not allowed to say that passing the exam certifies me as awesome, like this thing here did.

Star-divide

What it will do is enhance my marketability, supposedly.  And after spending 700 dollars, it damn well better.  It's too bad I'm still not entirely confident that I'll pass, but that's why I've been studying.  In the meantime, I've been trying to figure out what exactly to wear on exam day.  You see, my exam routine consists of waking up at 6, finding NSFW WWE Diva pics, downing a Red Bull, and wearing random sports jerseys to the exam two at a time.  I really enjoy looking completely out of place.  So help me pick what to wear.

The options:

And with that, I'm off to one final day of cramming.

This DBD going up so early in the night the night before is more acceptable, because hes on the East Coast. Of course, I guess that means Leon Powe could put up DBDs at like 2 PM the day before, but well just ignore that.

I vote for a Cal POWE jersey . . .goes with everything

There’s a chapter in the FreeDarko book (phenonmenal by the way) that deals with what NBA jerseys to wear for every occasion.

I’d avoid the Van Horn jersey – you’ll just end up on straight cash homey

MARK YOUR CALENDARS: Best will be answering questions during JO’s livechat on June 25th from 1:30-2:30pm.

Theo Robertson’s recovery from hip surgery is progressing well.

He said he expects to be able to do fullcourt, non-contact workouts in about 3 to 4 weeks.

"It’s coming along pretty well," Robertson said. "Having gone through the experience one time before definitely helps this time. There haven’t been any setbacks, which is great."

Robertson underwent surgery on the left hip two years ago and had to sit out the entire 2007-08 campaign. But that procedure involved microfracture surgery, which requires a long rehab, and this one did need that.

"I’m right around where I’m supposed to be. They’re really pleased," Robertson said. "The main thing is to let everything heal up inside there the first couple months."

Robertson said he probably won’t be able to play five-on-five until September, adding that the freedom to train all summer is critical.

We've got a grand crew

The men are in the semis!

California qualified its varsity 8+ boat for Friday’s semifinal round on the morning of the opening day of the 10th annual IRA Regatta on Thursday at Lake Natoma. The Golden Bears advanced out of the first varsity 8+ heat with the best time of the morning (5:51.50) to defeat four teams, including second-place Cornell (5:55.96). Cal’s second varsity 8+ also won its heat and will advance directly to its Saturday grand final. The Bears’ other boats – the novice 8+, open 4+ and varsity 4+ – finished second in their respective heats and will move on to the repechage rounds to try and reach the grand finals of their events.

The varsity 8+ semifinal rounds are slated for an 11:45 a.m. start on Friday.

“It was a challenging heat,” Cal head coach Mike Teti said of the varsity 8+ race. "Cornell and Northeastern are both good crews and both well coached. I thought after the draw, even though we’re the top seed, both those crews are dangerous because they’re good. All these crews are pretty closely matched. They’ve all beaten each other. We wanted to get a good start and hold off any challengers, and we were able to do that.

“Looking at the other heats, Washington and Wisconsin looked like they were cruising easily. Stanford looked very comfortable. Harvard and Brown are both good crews. All these crews are strong programs.

“After this afternoon’s racing, the semis will be drawn. We know we’ll have a tough race tomorrow.”

The Bears’ second varsity 8+ posted a time of 6:00.40, the second-best time of the morning, to win its four-team heat, which included second-place Wisconsin (6:09.69). Cal’s 2V8+ moves on to the 10:30 a.m. grand final on Saturday. The Bears’ 2V8+ finished second in last year’s IRA grand final.

Field Report

Just got into Orange County about an hour ago for my friend’s wedding, whoever recommended the 280 → 85 → 101 → 152 → 5 Thank You Very Much! It worked out brilliantly, in spite of several delays and finally setting sail at 5:12

That said, I am reminded of how much I can hate L.A. traffic. I hit traffic jams at 10:48 pm, 11:02 pm, and 11:47pm

BERKELEY – Cal Athletics is proud to announce the launch of a new hotel partnership with the Hilton Garden Inn San Francisco Bay Bridge as the official team hotel.

Womens soccer team in Italy:

June 3, 2009

The team and staff woke up excited to head to the famous Lake Como for a day of sight seeing as well as a boat trip to the city of Bellagio. Lake Como was absolutely beautiful. Shaped like an upside down y, the lake is surrounded by beautiful villas and small towns that edge the border.

The team spent a few hours in the city of Como. We visited the shops and took the cable car to the top of a small mountain to see the view. Then, we all headed towards Bellagio.

After about an hour-long boat ride, we stepped foot on a beautiful lake-side city. Many of the players dined at small cafés along the water. Others chose to head up into the hills and visited other ristorantes and trattorias.

Twist don't know if you saw that LaRussa sued Twitter over a fake Twitter account

but you should check it out.

Maybe “whoever” made the fake Harbaugh and Neu accounts should indicate they are spoofs, just so no one gets sued. That should be enough to protect “whoever” is making them. But then again it was Twitter that got sued, not the fake “Twitterer” (or is it “Tweeter?”)

I would think the following would suffice to put people on notice

“This is a fake account mocking the idiot known as Jim Harbaugh.”

or

“This account is not by the real Jim Harbaugh. He’s too dumb to set up something like this.”

Basically anything to let the reader know it’s not real. It probably takes some of the fun out, but it’s better than getting sued IMO.

There are exceptions for every "rule of law"

and in the case of defamation, someone who “repeats” a defamatory remark can be held just as liable as the original “defamer.” That’s probly the legal theory in LaRussa’s case, which I think is weak but the point of the suit is prolly to make a point, not to win.

Dangit, I was late to this thread.

Author = liability, publisher (i.e., you post content authored by someone else) = no liability. This is GENERAL, not specific, default law.

Plus, you may win on the merits, but you have to spend mucho cash to win on such merits, and coaches of major sports (and even the coaches of stanfurd sports) have more dinero than you.

As a way to raise money for the renovation of Memorial Stadium, the university is charging some football fans up to $225,000 to see the Bears play.
Membership benefits include 50-year rights to your seat including season tickets, on-campus parking on game days, free food and drinks, including beer and wine, cup holders and other perks. A clubhouse also will be available, consisting of a portion of the press box that will include an expansive balcony overlooking the campus and San Francisco Bay.

This article, in and of itself, is worth of about 5 fan posts. Thankfully, I could care less where I sit as long as I’m at the game. I’m sure those $225,000 seats will be filled with all sorts of passionate fans – passionate about telling you to sit down and be quiet.

I disagree, 33SS. I think its more capitalism at its finest. Cal is trying to do what it can to raise as much revenue in these uncertain times. They think giving these long-term contracts is the best to go. Now, maybe it is, maybe it isn’t, thats a different discussion.

But if somebody is willing to give the football team (and thus EVERY OTHER SPORT AT CAL) 225,000, Im not going to stand between that.

I don’t see why everyone thinks this is so ridiculous. You get 50 years of tickets, roughly 2600 days of free food, and you have a good place to park. The rest of the difference is a donation to the athletic program. Obviously these people are rich so I think this is fine.

Capitalism at its finest - sure. "Seat equity license," you have to be kidding me!

Just call it what it is – taking advantage of a nice 8 year run of football and trying to squeeze every nickle out of the suckers born every day. This is the side of college athletics I can’t stand. This is also going to turn Memorial into a WORSE homefield advantage. It’s not like we have a storied program. I can see crap like this flying at Michigan, $C, ND, SEC schools, but at Cal? Who are we and what have we done? I realize you have to start somewhere, but let’s be reasonable here. This is not reasonable.

You ever been to the “Donor’s Room” at Haas at half time. Holy shit, that place is filled with douchebag/stiffs/etc who are begging to suck Sean Lampley off (all three times I’ve been in there, Sean Lampley has been there).

PSL, Seat Equity License, etc goes hand in hand with the ESPNification of sports. Dummed down and overpriced. It upsets my stomach.

by 33SwisherSweet on Jun 5, 2009 10:33 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Im not saying you are naive here, but you have to admit that college football is, in many ways, a numbers game. More money, more this and more that. Like better facilities, which leads to better recruits, which leads to a better team. Also, helps the other sports.

So, if the choice is getting 250K (250K!!!) to be spread amongst the football team versus maybe having 3,000 people who don’ shout as much as before, then I’m still going to take the 250K. I completely understand your concern about the homefield advantage, but you know what makes great homefield advantage? A sick team. And 250K can go a LONGLIKEFUCK way towards getting a sick team!

Since Cal began the seat endowment program in January, 40 percent of the 3,000 available seats have been claimed, with about 10 percent paying up front and the rest making 30-year commitments. So far, the university has raised more than $164 million, Rosselli said.

No worries. There are some very wealthy football fans out there. Think about how Cal grads there are/how many of them must be multi-millionaires and it doesn’t seem so far-fetched that they could sell 3,000 of these. My concern is more about the long-term implications of this trend (if you’ve been reading the news about the new Yankees stadium, you’ll know what I mean, although that is admittedly an extreme example).

by HolmoePhobe on Jun 5, 2009 10:55 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I actually think that only 10% of the 3000 seats sell for $225,000, and those seats will be bought doubly by the rich buyers. So we’re really talking about like 100-150 people here. The rest of the ESP seats are cheaper, and STILL only amount to 5% of the total crowd…

Frankly I think the plan is genius.

I agree

Also, I can’t find the image for some reason, but it appeared as though a good many of these ESR’s will be on what is basically the upper deck on the Western side. So, folks who preferred the metal benches aren’t going to get crowded out.

Furthermore, as this MSNBC article makes clear, 70% of the cost of the ESR is a tax write-off because it’s going to the university, which is a huge inducement to the folks who are rich, but not RICH.

by Nashville on Jun 5, 2009 11:04 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Aren’t going to get crowded out too much is probably a more accurate statement.

by Nashville on Jun 5, 2009 11:04 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

great article, Nashville, thanks!
These days, most college football fans who are big donors secure top-notch seats, but as years pass they can be trumped by even bigger donors and be forced into different seats. An ESR removes this possibility. Also, the seats can be resold or transferred to children or others when the original owner dies. And 70 percent of the cost of the ESR – which can be paid up front or over a 30-year timetable at Cal – is a federal tax writeoff, since it’s considered a donation to a non-profit.

The first university in the United States to embrace the ESR concept, Cal also touts other advantages of the program, including preferred parking, free food and something unheard-of at a Bears’ game – a cushioned seat with a back rest.

Sounds good to me. And I agree with everything Twist has said – you gotta think about the long-term investment in the program. And there are Blues with money who have kids and grandkids who love Cal football. With the chance to keep those seats in the family? That’ll just increase the Cal love.

What a sad and dreary night this is. I hate to say it, but the wheels have officially come off. What the hell does all this mean for the Athletic facilities? Anyone who thinks this won’t affect them has got to be kidding themselves. Everyone likes a winner, but clearing all these hurdles with a losing team could be very difficult to say the least. Did the Yankees sell ‘Seat Equity Licenses’ or did they sell ‘Personal Seat Licenses?’ What are the specifics of the Yankees plan?

by Nashville on Jun 5, 2009 11:19 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Im not sure if they sold specific type of seat licenses. I think what hes getting at is that they jacked up the prices WAY high. Like 50 bucks for 3rd deck seats. And 2500 bucks to sit behind homeplate. Then, nobody came and they had to lower prices.

Of course, this is different, because Cal isnt raising prices on ALL seats. Just a VERY small percentage.

by TwistNHook on Jun 5, 2009 11:21 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Exactly

But it’s actually even simpler than that because they represent merely a one-time increase.

If you write a check for $50k you will not have a price increase in your tickets for the next 40 years. That is genius. And you can sell them on the secondary market, pass them along to kids/grand-kids, or return them to the university with no obligation to continue paying if you’ve chosen to finance the cost.

by Nashville on Jun 5, 2009 11:23 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Isn't raising prices on all seats? Yet?

You have any information to back up that assertion? In my opinion, there is no way they can keep prices as low as they are right now (arguably the best sporting bang for your buck in the Bay Area) and justify charging 250k for some seats.

by 33SwisherSweet on Jun 5, 2009 11:44 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

My understanding is that we were just discussing these new 250K seats. They might have plans to raise ticket prices. I dont know. But my argument was that if they get tons of additional monies from these seats, they might not need to. Or they might anyway.

Based on the Forbes article I read

The $300 million is meant to be the seed money for a Cal Athletic Dept hedge fund (kind of like the one that T. Boone set up at Oklahoma St.) that is estimated to grow to $1 billion over 30 years and make the Ath Dept completely self-sustaining. The SELs are a huge chunk of that money, esp. when you consider that 40% of the seats sold so far have raised $164 million. To 33Swish’s dismay, that would make it appear that the most expensive seats have been selling the best and it’s the downmarket – if that term is even applicable – premium seats that are still available.

Here’s the Forbes article. Slightly outdated, it’s from 9/08.

I think Cal is extremely wise to generate this kind of capital right now when its sports teams are at their apex, enthusiasm is at its height, and, for investing purposes, the market is so cheap. One final note, those alums who do pay for the SEL are also satisfying their yearly giving within the sticker price.

My thoughts are: I like the fact that they’re trying hard to raise revenue for the stadium. Like you, I’m concerned about the games becoming less accessible to the average fan. Ideally, I’d like to see them have a small number of these ridiculously over-priced seats (which they can use to raise money for the program) as long as it doesn’t affect the cost of student, young alumni, etc. seats.

“Surprisingly, there haven’t been a lot of comments on our blogs about this,” Avery said. “The absence of complaints does tell you that either people don’t care or they’re just going ahead and doing it.”

Lack of quotes on a blog leads you to believe people are cool with this? Haha. That’s laughable in and of itself.

MONEY QUOTE (I agree wholeheartedly with this guy)

“They’re asking $225,000? And they give us crap for being elitists,” Stanford’s director of tickets, Rich Muschell, said with a laugh. “How ’bout those Bears.”

Danzig, isn’t this step 1000 into how Google will install a draconian big brother state?

Um… no. I’m not worried so much bout google… but google tries so hard to find out your personal info (like you name/homeaddress/phone/SSN/what you buy/who you know) and then permanently keeps the data. What I’m really worried about is someone coming along and abusing all that data. For instance, what if – sometime in the future – Choice POint acquires Experian and then acquires Google. What if McCarthy is reincarnated as Michelle Bachman? Not so funny anymore is it? … I would just prefer everyone to be safe about their info online.

by danzig on Jun 5, 2009 10:18 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Choicepoint? Experian?

How on earth could a data aggregation company acquire a behemoth like Google?

by Avinash on Jun 5, 2009 10:23 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Easy. You would think that Harley Davidson could acquire GM easily.. since it’s worth more… but acquisition value (diff from market value) is based on Enterprise Value… Market value + Debt – Cash on B/S. GM cannot be acquired easily b/c you would need to put up the market value (tiny).. plus debt (HUUUUGE) minus cash.

Let’s look at Google 10 years from today. What if it was found out that Google was giving their user’s data away to the government and divorce lawyers and they lost all credibility. People stopped trusting google and the stock plummets. Google’s acquisition price would approx be:

Market value (low now that the stock is down) + Debt (zero… the hve none) – cash (tons) = a VERY LOW NUMBER.

Bottom line: All google has is IP (intellectual property) with tangible assets amounting to their server farms and the nominal value of their employees. If their IP is worth zero and their stock plummets… this company can be purchased at 2X tangible assets.

Of course this a super simple example that ignores goodwill premium etc… but that’s basically why. Hope that helps.

I use uTorrent to download the actual files onto my computer… it allows me to encrypt my traffic and works well with peerguardian (which prevents people from seeing what I’m downloading).

Chicagoaubear’s Cal game torrents during the season are always in .iso form… so if you’re looking to burn ISOs onto a DVD I recommend IMG Burn. It’s free and the user interface is as easy as can be.

Download the free program IMG Burn
http://www.imgburn.com/index.php?act=download

Just pick “Write image file to disk”… pick the ISO you just downloaded and it will burn.

Well, if you download an ISO file, you’ve got two options:

1) burn it onto a DVD, and just watch that DVD like you would any other DVD.

well, okay, that’s your best option – the other option is to mount it onto a virtual drive and access it that way, but probably too much hassle.
