DBD 6.23.09 Racist Supreme Court Justices Needed
Well, it's seems to be all the rage to appoint obviously racist judges to the US Supreme Court. And for the CGB Supreme Court, it should be no different, right? Just as HolmoePhobe is bizarrely obsessed (his words, not mine!) with the genuine process, we should honor the reality of the sitch.
Now that all the backroom dealings are finished and we have two briefs ready to go, we can have the arguments on the Supreme Court. It took a long time and there was MUCH more drama than you might think behind the scenes. But whats done is done. Now, we need Justices. I remember a few people wanted to be Justices, Hydro, Spazzy, CalUmBus Bear, OakTownMario, others Im forgetting. If you want to be a Justice, please email me at Twistnhook at gmail dot com so I can coordinate that aspect. Thank you!
I'm rereading this and its painfully unfunny, but tevs. It gets the point across. If you want to be a justice, contact me. Thanks.
Alexis Grey-Lawson to join Team USA:
USA Basketball today announced the official 12-member team for the 2009 USA Women's World University Games Team with California senior Alexis Gray-Lawson included on the roster. The USA Women will compete for a gold medal at the 2009 World University Games, July 1-11 in Belgrade, Serbia.
Gray-Lawson was named one of the original 15 finalists after the initial tryout camp held in Colorado Springs in mid-May. The team members were selected by the USA Basketball Women's Junior National Team Committee, chaired by Sue Donohoe, the NCAA Vice President for Division I Women's Basketball, following four days of training for 15 finalists June 18-21.
The U.S. squad will continue training camp at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo., through June 25, when the team departs for Belgrade, Serbia. The World University Games is organized by the International University Sports Federation and held every other year. The women's basketball competition will take place July 1-11. Eligible athletes for the USA team must be currently enrolled in a college or university and have remaining NCAA athletic eligibility.
"I'm just excited for the chance to go to Serbia", said Gray-Lawson. "I have never been, and I'm just ready to go."
Gray-Lawson is the second Bear in the last five years and the third overall to be part of Team USA. Devanei Hampton played on the 2006 US Under-20 National Team. Trisha Stafford was a member of the 1990 US Junior National Team.

My brain hurt too much to make sense of this headline, somethinga bout water polo, I suck tongiht:
BERKELEY – Former Golden Bear star John Mann and current Cal sophomore Luka Saponjic faced off in the 2009 FINA World League Super Final bronze-medal game Sunday in Podgorica, Montenegro, with Saponjic’s Serbia squad edging Mann’s USA team, 9-7.
Saponjic was making his first appearance for the Serbian senior team, and although he saw limited action as the youngest member on the roster, he clearly benefited from being part of the international tournament.
“This was a great experience for me,” Saponjic said. “I am very excited to have represented my country and to have won my first senior team medal. I know I have much to work on, but this is only the beginning for me.”
The match was a repeat of a semifinal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics won by the Americans.
Next up for Mann and Saponjic will be either the FINA World Championships in Rome or the World University Games in Belgrade, Serbia. Final rosters for the World Championships will be announced later this week.

Cal Rugger doing great:
BERKELEY – Wearing his nation’s colors Sunday night in his first full international appearance with the U.S. National Team, California’s Colin Hawley scored a try as the Eagles broke a four-game losing streak in test matches with their 31-13 victory over Georgia in the Churchill Cup Bowl Final in Denver, making the returning fifth-year senior the Muscle Milk California Student-Athlete of the Week.
Earlier in the week, Hawley was named a USAR All-American for the third time in his collegiate career, putting him on the itinerary for the All-Americans’ tour of South Africa in August.
Prior to Sunday’s full international test, Hawley previously played for the Eagles last summer against French club side ASM – Clermont Auvergne and earlier this month against the “A” sides England Saxons and Argentina Jaguars.

Cal Blogs – What’s the deal?
So this past 24 hours was huge in terms of Cal recruiting. We got two solid commits. Yet one thing that is bothering me is the fact that two of the “main” Cal blogs didn’t report on this.
www.californiagoldenblogs.com/ – no mention anywhere about this. They seem to be busy focusing on a pretty absurd tournament as opposed to reporting/putting good insight on actual Cal stuff.
www.californiagoldenblogs.com
In all seriousness, aside from our general remarks about how excited we are to gain a new commitment, there is little insider information that we can really give readers since we are not in contact with recruits. On occasion, I will sometimes put up a post with my thoughts on the new recruits’ highlight videos, however, I’ve been pre-occupied with the Emerald Bowl Review.

I posted it in yesterday’s DBD. Just because we didn’t dedicate space on the front page doesn’t mean someone didn’t mention it.

…. this blog and all of us along with it (esp Tbred) are guilty. We should’ve had something more prominent up front. Very few readers actually read the DBD.
This goes back to the debate about who these blogs should cater to: the commentors or the general readership. Commentors make up a small percentage of the readership. It’s a tough balancing act that the guys at CGB have. I tend to think this site tends to cater more to the commentors.
It'll be just you, me, and Peter Nincompoop.
I also believe we have a higher percentage of commentors then most other blogs.

Personally I don’t get caught up in recruiting and don’t follow it at all. It’s like the MLB draft to me – you have to wait two years for anyone to show up in games and even then most of them probably won’t do much. So…eh. As for actually covering it, I suppose we could do a better job of that, but I’ve never taken an interest in it myself so I don’t look for that information.

I think it’s natural to cater to the commentors more than the non-commentors because if people don’t comment to tell us what they think/want, then we’re not going to hear their desires.
www.californiagoldenblogs.com
Exactly
I actually have no idea how to cater to readers who don’t leave comments or give us other types of feedback. I think we do a pretty good job responding to the input from commentators, but we don’t have any market research that tells us what the mass of readers who don’t leave comments actually want.
For the most part, I assume that readers like what we’re doing and continue to come back because of that, and that’s fine. If they want to see something new or different, I trust that they’ll speak up, rather than simply cease reading. In any case, if they do the latter, there’s very little we can do about it.
Frankly, the choice isn’t really between catering to commentators or non-commentators. The choice is sometimes between catering between catering to commentators, and simply catering to ourselves. Generally, I assume that if I write something that I find interesting, others will find it interesting as well. That’s the hope, anyway. Sometimes I’m disappointed, sometimes I’m surprised. However, I know that for my own sake, if I spend too much time writing about anything other than what I want to write, I’m quickly going to cease enjoying this whole ‘blogging’ thing.

yeah, often we get lots of comments when a post is poorly written/researched, and people have lots of quibbles with certain parts of it. the comments are fun, though, and easily the most tangible evidence that someone is reading and caring.
So, basically, you gotta Go Bears!
Part of it is also that when Hydro posts a super in depth article about some play or the other, most of us don’t really know enough to engage in a substantive discussion of it, so we say something like “nice post”. On the other hand, when someone posts on a more open-ended topic like scheduling or whatever, everyone is reasonably well-informed on the topic, so there’s a higher likelihood of lots of people commenting. In other words, the better the post, the less comments it’s going to receive.

This is true, but I never really want to fall back on the “oh, that’s not our job” excuse. That’s not the attitude I want us to have. Furthermore, it’s rather flattering when people think highly enough that they feel the need to complain when we don’t live up to their lofty standards. That certainly hasn’t always been the case.
Would I love it if CGB was able to provide news and commentary on every Cal event? Sure. Is that realistic at this time? Probably not; we’d really have to work at it.
Regarding recruiting, not only do I not care much to follow it (as the other mods have stated as well), but I really can’t see us doing a better job at covering it than the Rivals/Scout/ESPN people. At best, we could probably spend a lot of effort duplicating coverage that they already provide, and with an almost certainly lower level of quality, to boot. Would I be adverse to upgrading our coverage? Of course not, if the right people/resources presented themselves. For now, I’m not going to worry too much about it.

Yes, I agree. We can’t really do much more than what ESPN/Scout/Rivals does.
www.californiagoldenblogs.com
Hm....
The one advantage you do have over those services makes you more important than all of them.
You can aggregate content from all of them in one place… that’s something they can’t do.
That’s the reason I first made CGB a regular stop in the first place b/c I could get the all the links, picts and commentary for a story all in one place. Don’t you think that’s a powerful thing?
I agree. As a content originator, we’re never going to win the recruiting battle. As a content aggregater, the SBN platform has the potential to be extremely powerful.
One thing we’re always going to have to watch out for, however, is copyright infringement, especially considering all three of the services mentioned keep the vast majority of their recruiting content behind a subscriber firewall, so even fair use guidelines don’t apply.
So, basically, you gotta Go Bears!
BOOM, contract breach
Don’t forget about violating online agreements, such as a website terms of use. For example, you might be within a fair use exception to copyright infringement, but if you agreed in some online contract that you wouldn’t do what you just did, BOOM, contract breach. Penalties for that usually aren’t quite as severe as for copyright infringement, tho.

Actually I was sorta blaming myself. WE ALL CAN CREATE CONTENT.
I just realized that Tbred did post something… so he’s the man. However, the rest of us could have posted pictures, 40times, commentary etc. The CGB team could have frontpaged Tbred’s blurb so we could’ve started a comment thread on it.
We’re all at fault…that’s all I’m saying.
I actually did briefly front page TBreds blurb. But it seemed a bit vague to me, so I de=front paged it. I probably should have come forward with my concern and tried to rectify it.
Also, danzig, where are you getting these videos from? Is anybody gonna get mad at us or something for having them on our front page?

Well, T-Bred is having some health issues, so I dont know what his role here is. If you wish to blame somebody, it would be me.
But look, Im not so good about the recruiting stuff, I admit it. I look at it the same way yelllow fever does. But its clearly important to some Cal fans and if its important to some Cal fans, it SHOULD be important about it to me as a moderator.
So, if we get a new recruit in and its a big thing, thats great. Lets do one of two things:
1. Put a comment in the DBD and say “MARSHAWNTHUSIASTS, TEAR DOWN THAT WALL…..of no fanshot about this!”
2. Put up your own fanshot and puit a comment in the DBD saying “Fanshot ,bitches!” and well front page that so hard.

Vomiting for the first few weeks of the sickness. Now I just have round the clock nausea. Can’t eat too much. Occasionally throw up if I do eat too much. Only about 2 meals a day. Seen 3 specialists (had an MRI done just in case. I thought I had a cyst because MRI people reported there may be one. They have to report worst case scenario so they don’t get sued. Neurologist looked at it, said there was a little place that might be something but it was really nothing to worry about and that at most we should have an MRI done in 6 months to make sure it isn’t growing). Gastroenterologist couldn’t find anything. Doctor’s agree there is something wrong with me but can’t find out what. I think it is a mild stomach condition that has been extremely aggravated by anxiety. I don’t know about memory loss (lol?). Any perceived memory loss may be because of anxiety thinking I am stupid and will forget everything on my finals (got A’s on all but one).

No mention anywhere? Didn’t someone post news of these commitments on the DBD? Or was I imagining that?
Marshawnthusiastic Jahvidtician and member of the PRileytariat.
yeah, they were mentioned numerous times, but that guy wanted it on the front page – he clearly doesn’t read the DBD’s, so he clearly misrepresented us. Too bad.
I wonder if we should respond – or would that just make us look petty?
I haven't seen that many tear-stained dollar bills since my dad hired a stripper for my uncle's funeral.
So for this totally arbitrary list of evil I constructed yesterday, I guess I should ask these questions.
1) Do absolute numbers matter more than relative numbers? Stalin and Mao probably killed more than Hitler, but Russia and China were the two largest countries in the world. Whereas Hitler eliminated 40% of the world’s Jewish population and was responsible for the death of 20% of Poland’s pre-war population. Horrifying stuff.
2) should subordinates count? LeonPowe stated something about more Nazis being on the list like Eichmann, Himmler, etc. But that’d mean we’d probably have to do the same for Mao and Stalin’s subordinates like Mao’s crazy wife and Beria. Without the leader none of the awful shit happens.
3) Should conquerers be included? I know someone brought up Genghis Khan, but for the most part Genghis gave the choice for those he conquered to survive and join him. Well, other than that time they killed his son-in-law and he torched the barbarians to death. Maybe a few others I’m missing.
4) Does scale matter? How do you compare serial killers, child rapists with mass murderers? The same, or different?
Any thoughts would be helpful. Thanks.

Have you ever seen this show?
Interesting list of how he classes evil.
Also, Do you take into consideration cultural norms and the era involved? For instance, Genghis Khan offered cities a choice. Surrender at once or be completely destroyed. One Persian city fought for a day or three, lost and every single man, woman and child was killed and the city was burned to the ground. Afterwards, everyone surrendered right away. I would argue that his action was not inherently evil (like a sadistic serial killer) and more a practical use of “terror”.

I thought it was Genghis Khan’s grandson that burned Babylon to the ground because his Christian wife told him to? In those days, when a city was sieged the inhabitants were given the choice to surrunder, abandon the city, or fight. But from what I recall of the story, Genghis Khan’s grandson didn’t give them the choice, and killed everyone inside and burned all the great libraries. That apparently sparked the holy wars because another Genghis Khan relative had converted to Islam and was controlling up in the north by Syria and got pissed off at that.

Jiang Qing (Mao's Wife)
was a scapegoat. In her own words “I was Mao’s dog. Whoever he told to bite, I bit”
Eichmann and Himmler were the architects of the Final Solution and came up with shit like the use of Zkylon-B and concentration camps.
It's difficult to take this at face value
since its a conversation about the degrees of mass killing, but this is how I figure it:
1. Nazis (and the Stalinist purges) were systematic attempts at genocide
2. The Great Leap Forward was an attempt to modernize the country combined with famine. It did lead directly to more deaths than the Holocaust, but famines are not a blame-able wrong. Yes, Mao’s actions did lead to some ~30 million deaths – but he wasn’t trying to kill anyone. Does intent count? I think so in a measure of evil.
3. The Cultural Revolution – well, here its so difficult to figure how much was the Gang of Four, how much was a feeble and barely audible Mao. But (and this is where this conversation gets trite and doesn’t close to even accurately talk about what a nightmade the Cultural Revolution was) – the 10 years of chaos “only” led to 500,000 – 1 million deaths. And even then, there wasn’t one real “architect” – more of a “Lord of the Rings” on a mass scale thing going on, where control of the country was basically seceded to students who had the same conviction of their beliefs as the students who run BAMN.
In no way is this a defense of Mao.
Yknow, that was an OK Purge. A pretty Decent Purge. But a great purge? I mean I dont know if Id put it in the Top 5 purges. Top 10, sure.

Conquerers are a weird category on themselves, but it’s tough to classify them as evil, especially when comparing them to people responsible for genocide and mass extermination.
Really, though, what it comes down to is marketing. Sadly, the reason the common person will think of Hitler as the epitome of evil, whereas they would think of Stalin as evil, but not in the same sense, comes down to marketing and how we were thought to think during history class.
I think I brought this up prior, but in American History in high school, our teacher put up a Soviet flag while teaching us about the Cold War. Another student brought up how people would respond if a Nazi flag/Swastika were hung up while learning about World War II. It’s interesting.
JAI HO!
In “The Black Book of Communism,” the French academics proposed that the moral difference between Nazis and the Soviets was that the Nazis made an essentialist distinction for being murdered, and there was nothing you could do about it. You could be “re-educated” by the Soviets, or repudiate being a kulak or whatever, but the Nazis generally didn’t allow anyone to repudiate being Jewish, a Gypsy, Polish, etc.

We should include the United States. 20 million native Americans killed - that ranks right up there.

Interesting article on the behind the scenes actions with the clerics in Iran;
Few key excerpts:
Ayatollah Khamenei now has a very big image problem among influential Shi’a clergymen. Over the course of the political crisis, stretching back to the days leading up to the election, Rafsanjani has succeeded in knocking the supreme leader off his pedestal by revealing Ayatollah Khamenei to be a political partisan rather than an above-the-fray spiritual leader. In other words, the supreme leader has become a divider, not a uniter.
A reformist website, Rooyeh, reported that Rafsanjani already had the support of nearly a majority of the Assembly of Experts, a body that constitutionally has the power to remove Ayatollah Khamenei. The report also indicated that Rafsanjani’s lobbying efforts were continuing to bring more clerics over to his side. Rafsanjani’s aim, the website added, is the establishment of a leadership council, comprising of three or more top religious leaders, to replace the institution of supreme leader. Shortly after it posted the report on Rafsanjani’s efforts to establish a new collective leadership, government officials pulled the plug on Rooyeh.
This one is what I’ve been saying for a while now:
To a certain degree, hardliners now find themselves caught in a cycle of doom: they must crack down on protesters if they are to have any chance of retaining power, but doing so only causes more and more clerics to align against them.
I think we are going to see 4 now, which seemed unlikely before Khamenei’s incredibly arrogant speech last Friday. Some sort of change to the regime. It seems likely that my prediction of somewhat minimal change will be true. The entire clerical sitch isnt going to change, theyll just shuffle a few people on top, make it 3 instead of 1 or something like that. Put Mousavi in (or have a re-vote which Mousavi would win) and then we’ll see how much actually changes on the ground.

3. Thunder/Russell Westbrook select …
James Harden, SG, Arizona State
“He can handle, shoot and he’s athletic. And he was in a good system at Arizona State,” says guard Russell Westbrook, who likes the makeup of the 6’5" Harden. But don’t get Westbrook started on sliding to the 2 so Oklahoma City can tap Spanish star Ricky Rubio. Says he: “You trippin’.”
Doug Says: “Harden is the most refined two-guard in the lottery, but he’ll have to learn to play at the next level.”
So let’s see…a former UCLA PG in Russell Westbrook (“RW”) wouldn’t be happy moving off the 1 to accommodate another player, but because Jrue Holiday (“JH”) actually was and wasn’t happy about it…he’s a traitor.
I need to polish my tinfoil hat.
Still holding out hope that Ryan Anderson will capitulate and grant him that interview he's been asking for for months now.
Not defending the crazy anger towards Jrue at all, but he walked into a situation where a more established preseason All-American point guard was running the point. I’m fairly certain RW would move without a lot of complaint if the Thunder went that direction.
Per tinfoil hats, I find them restricting. And completely useless. A Faraday cage around your entire housing is a lot more useful.

Getting around content filters at work.
I cant watch it at work. Can you summarize?
Everyone trying to get around a content filter should try out an Onion network packet scrambler.
Vidala TOR
https://www.torproject.org/vidalia/

or JAP TOR
http://anon.inf.tu-dresden.de/download_en.html

Most weaker content filters block traffic coming from a specific address (porn, youtube, facebook etc). Using a TOR network, you’re still getting the content you want but the packets are being sent from random locations from the onion network. Content filters cannot tell WHERE a packet is coming from.
Stronger content filters will examine the packets themselves so they’re harder to fool.
Hm. What about going home, downloading these programs and putting up the installation packages on a flash drive. Take that flash drive to work the next day.

I highly doubt that, but if you’re not joking then I would go with a tunnel to your home drive via DynDNS or a Opera home server (Unite).

Opera Unite (can be set up free in 10 mins)
http://www.techcrunch.com/2009/06/16/exclusive-video-hands-on-with-opera-unite-it-rocks/
DynDNS is harder, but more powerful. If you have a fixed IP at home, you don’t even need it.
Opera Unite is simple and it rocks! If you can connect to the internet, you can download a file from your home drive.
In that case, Opera Unite is for you. It’s a server within the web browser. When you download something from your home computer the data looks exactly like normal HTTP traffic.
I know you can access websites and the web (that’s how you’re reading this now)… well then…you can download programs from your home machine and it will just look like you’re reading a web page.

My point is that the anti-universal healthcare argument is self contradictory: if a)private insurance was actually affordable, and b) government-run healthcare was terrible and inefficient (which are their two main claims), then nobody would want government healthcare.
And yet 76% of Americans support the establishment of a government-administered healthcare system, including 57% who say they’d be willing to pay higher taxes for it.

That wasn’t really what I was talking about in my comment…I was talking more about how the demand for government healthcare was because people can’t afford private insurance.
Regardless – They would only be driven out of business if they had to lower their rates to the point where they were losing money. Given that they’re currently making huge profits, I think it’s a mistake to assume that the establishment of government insurance would automatically undercut them.
Also, if the insurance companies’ argument that their services are superior is true, then people who can afford them would stick with them – and the ones who can’t, who they aren’t making any money off anyway, would be the ones using government healthcare.
by HolmoePhobe on Jun 23, 2009 11:23 AM PDT up reply actions
Heh this sounds more or less exactly like Obama’s answer to the questions posed this morning.
I don’t think health insurers are making “huge” profits, and certainly not enough to cover the losses from an entire tax base subsidizing the gov’t plan. Also Obama didn’t answer the question about employers switching to the gov’t plan because it’s cheaper, depriving people of the choice of health plans.
CGB: Our points are reliable. Our logic is infallible. Our past records are illogical. And our ham is dynamite!
by Spazzy Mcgee on Jun 23, 2009 11:35 AM PDT up reply actions
I think they’re making pretty significant profits: http://money.cnn.com/magazines/fortune/fortune500/2009/industries/223/index.html
I don’t know exactly what employers are required to provide – but I’m pretty sure that employees don’t have a “choice of health plans” right now. In fact, I know that a lot of employers don’t provide health plans at all.
Frankly, I consider Americans dying due to lack of health insurance to be a significantly more serious problem than diminished profits for healthcare companies. I don’t really get how people think it’s not a problem.
by HolmoePhobe on Jun 23, 2009 11:45 AM PDT up reply actions
I’m not sure you understand how vast the potential for US taxpayer subsidy is… It could easily dwarf any profits insurers currently make.
And currently at my work, we have a choice of three private insurers. Obama’s whole point was that individuals can decide whether they want to remain with a private insurer or switch to the government plan. If employers themselves switch from a private insurer to the gov’t plan against the wishes of an employee, the employee is left with a choice to go it alone without the company backing, which is a lot more expensive, or switch to the gov’t plan they don’t want.
To address your last point, the fear is that long term, the gov’t will drive insurers out of business altogether and we’re left with a DMV health insurance plan which ultimately will lead to subpar care than we’re currently getting. Which is worse, 300 million people getting crappy care, forever, or 250 million getting great care and 50 million getting none at all, temporarily?
CGB: Our points are reliable. Our logic is infallible. Our past records are illogical. And our ham is dynamite!
by Spazzy Mcgee on Jun 23, 2009 11:59 AM PDT up reply actions
Again, you’re assuming that the government will subsidize their plan down to the point where everyone is abandoning private insurers for the government plan.
Also, that last paragraph is very misleading – I don’t think people who have private insurance think they’re getting “great care”, and I don’t see how the people not getting any healthcare is temporary.

Well, the USPS is much, much older than both, so the situation is reversed, not to mention delivering packages is a lot easier than providing healthcare. UPS and FedEx are much, much better at moving large packages around than the USPS with their fleets of new planes and online business systems and so forth.

but the question is services.
the gov’t will try to control costs by not paying providers enough for their costs, which will mean additional delays in service. and the beaurocracy will stifle any attempts at efficeincy….so you don’t get the service you want/need even if it is fairly cheap.
private can then provide good service, at a reasonable cost by negotiation with networks of providers like they do now, and keeping the adiminstrative crap to a minimum.

Because it’s a sunk cost. You already pay tax money for it, so it’s “cheaper”, thus creating artificial demand.
In terms that Twist can understand, 24 Hour in Berkeley > RSF (for sake of this argument). But the RSF is significantly cheaper because our student fees fund it. Thus, it makes more sense to join the RSF because the marginal cost is lower than 24-hour.
JAI HO!
Buhh? For nonstudents the RSF is just as expensive!

Okay, you want a new cell phone that you have to pay for out of your allowance.
Daddy already cut your allowance by $50 to partially pay for his phone a couple months ago.
Now, you have the option of getting his old phone for free or a brand new phone, that is of higher quality, for $50.
JAI HO!
Except daddy didn’t already cut his allowance because we don’t have a single-payer plan yet…and the whole point is that it would cost less.
So it’s more like you have the option of Daddy cutting your allowance by $10 and giving you an old phone (assuming government healthcare really is worse than private), or you can buy a new phone for $50.

Ok now I see what you mean. So what’s the problem? Artificial demand sounds scary on paper, but it’s not going to make people jump wholesale from private insurers to government healthcare – again, particularly if government healthcare is as crappy as you guys are claiming.
by HolmoePhobe on Jun 23, 2009 11:59 AM PDT up reply actions
Um, but that’s the point… people will if the difference is large enough (which, given the tax bill required for a such a plan, it could be).
Plus, the effect this has on employers, etc. It’s no good.
JAI HO!
So it’s better to force people to pay exorbitant rates or go without medical attention because a handful of private insurers have a monopoly on the market?

No, because people who can afford it would be able to pay for non-horrible healthcare. I want the people who can’t afford anything to be able to get medical attention when they need it.
by HolmoePhobe on Jun 23, 2009 12:10 PM PDT up reply actions
No, the universal health care would be coverage, and technically the payor would be universal (the government), but the plans would be administered by the same private carriers that exist and cover you now.
Check out what they did with Medicare Part D….government pays private carriers a per member, per month fee and the private carriers administer the plans in each region….its cheaper for the government to pay the carrier a fee than for the government to run the plans themselves. Make sense?

by HolmoePhobe on Jun 23, 2009 12:16 PM PDT up reply actions
There are 40 million uninsured in this country. There are three groups of people among them:
1) those who can afford but don’t want to pay
2) those who can’t afford and don’t want to pay anyway
3) those who can’t afford and want it but can’t get it
I’ll have to dig up my papers to remember what the breakdown is, but of those three groups, there is only one that would really benefit from universal health care.
The people who benefit from universal healthcare will be the small employers, because it will be cheaper for them to offer coverage, at least under the models that I’ve reviewed.
Jahvid Best is so awesome, he makes me want to strangle a mountain ox with my bare hands!

On that note, the first 2 groups of people aren’t going to take coverage under universal healthcare anyway, so they will still be hitting the ER as uninsured patients.

To say nothing of the strain it puts on emergency rooms, thereby slowing service to people who DO pay for medical insurance – and increasing costs to taxpayers.

JAI HO!
Oh, come on.
WASHINGTON — More than 18,000 adults in the USA die each year because they are uninsured and can’t get proper health care, researchers report in a landmark study released Tuesday.
http://www.usatoday.com/news/health/healthcare/2002-05-22-insurance-deaths.htm
Apart from the matter of people dying, I think it’s pretty widely accepted at this point that waiting until an emergency and then treating someone costs more than preventive measures – again, that’s costs that are going to the taxpayers.

I think you misunderstood what I said but its ok. The 18,000 uninsured who die because they don’t have insurance, probably would be in that 3rd group I mentioned, those who want/need coverage but can’t afford it. Those 18,000 would of course take it if they could get it.
But there are many who can get it and don’t want to pay for it or don’t think they need it. And others who just don’t think they need it regardless if they can afford it or not. Those people are probably going to avoid coverage until they need it or end up in the ER.
I don’t make this stuff up, this is real research and studies that I get this from.

1. The idea of driving private health insurers out of business by undercutting them with the government is a brilliant plan for progressives,
2. I wish I had thought of it five years ago,
3. I still doubt it will work, but it’s worth trying. Frankly, anything that promises to get rid of HMOs is worth trying.
The right wing figured out “defund the enemy” tactics thirty years ago. It’s past time for liberals to start fighting back on the same terms.

What kind of sick, A’s-loving person are you?
JAI HO!
It won't deprive people of quality health care
but that’s not the point. The point is that it would damage (I’m not optimistic enough to hope for “destroy”) a group which is devastatingly effective at using the political process to transfer wealth from the poor to the rich. As far as I’m concerned, that’s worth any putative collateral damage. (There won’t be any— since, in actuality, universal health care is a really good idea on the merits— but even if there were, it’d be worth it in the long run.)

NBA news
Spurs trade for Richard Jefferson:
The Milwaukee Bucks agreed to trade Richard Jefferson to the San Antonio Spurs for Bruce Bowen, Kurt Thomas and Fabricio Oberto a Bucks source told ESPN.com.
I think it makes the Spurs the team to beat next year assuming they can sign a few role players for depth. No one in the league can match the scoring of that starting lineup and Jefferson’s defense isn’t that far off of what Bowen provides at this stage in his career. Of course, it’s something of a black mark on him that he’s been traded twice in two years because his salary is that of a top guy, but has never been given the chance to lead as a team’s top player.
My own personal take on Jefferson is that his salary is what broke the Nets’ salary structure and what caused the breakup of the Nets. He already had a max contract, Vince looked around and saw that Jefferson had a max deal so the Nets had to extend him for more when his deal was up two years ago, and then Kidd looked at Carter and saw the money he was making and demanded more or a trade. Which led to the whole thing being blown up.
The NBA: Where wacky salary structures happen.
Still holding out hope that Ryan Anderson will capitulate and grant him that interview he's been asking for for months now.

I question the Spurs depth at power forward and center. At the swing positions, assuming Manu is healthy they should be fairly potent.
I can tie my shoes!
They’ve got Roger Mason Jr. and George Hill at the guard spots, so they’re solid there. I think if they can resign Drew Gooden and slide Duncan to the 5 they’ve got an incredible starting lineup, and then with Matt Bonner coming off the bench they’re not too bad. If they can pick up the Pillsbury Doughboy (Sean May) or a guy like Mikki Moore with make-good deals, they’ll have a solid rotation upfront. At the wings they still might get Bowen back if he gets bought out, or get another defensive specialist like Quinton Ross.

1) He takes a bunch of bad shots
2) Misses a ton of defensive assignments.
3) He also has horrible, horrible facial hair.
That said I’m sure Popovich is a better coach than Del Negro

Also, I don’t think Mikki Moore is anyones answer. He is 6 fouls, and not much more.

Nice piece on Cal’s two new commits.
Cal could be on the verge of putting together one of its best recruiting classes in years after picking up two more elite prospects over the weekend.
Along with earlier commitments from Cecil Whiteside (Newport Beach, Calif./Newport Harbor) and David Wilkerson (Danville, Calif./Monte Vista), the Bears may have the top linebacker class in the nation.
The Bears also landed one of the state’s true road graders in offensive lineman Alex Crosthwaite (San Diego, Calif./Cathedral). He was the top lineman on arguably the state’s best offensive line a year ago. He’s a true guard prospect with natural strength, toughness and a mean streak.
Crosthwaite is the third offensive lineman the Bears have secured and probably the best of the group. He turned down offers from schools like Arizona, Arizona State, Colorado, Nebraska, Fresno State, Minnesota, Duke, UNLV and San Diego State. He was also beginning to draw heavy interest from USC and UCLA.
In other positive news for the Bears, quarterback-commit Austin Hinder (Steamboat Springs, Colo.) had by far his best workout of the spring at the Nike Camp in Colorado. Hinder struggled a bit at the Elite 11 regional camp at Cal and the Nike Camp at Stanford back in May, but was spinning it very well with a lot of zip in Boulder over the weekend.

The Rondo/Allen for Stuckey/Hamilton/Prince deal makes even less sense to me, because Stuckey isn’t that good, Hamilton’s getting old, and Prince disappears in every big playoff game the Pistons have. I wonder if the new duds are more water-proof then in past years, allowing them to not bitch so much when it rains.

I agree 100%, but I have to admit I smiled at this image:
“I’d take my 3-iron out and have my caddie kneel before me and I’d knight him like I was the queen,” Provisional decided.
Nobody uses a 3-iron anymore, even the golf purists have switched to 3-hybrids.

I rock a 3iron and 4iron hybrid. I still suck, but they make the potential to actually hit a decent shot much higher.
I am shamed to admit that I still carry, and use, a 2-iron. Don’t hat me!

Its my favorite club, I can hit low flat shots out of the rough or between trees when in trouble. I can hit it off the tee or fairway 220 yards like a wood, or I can hit it high and soft 140 yards to the green. I’ve even used it for chipping! I love it!

perhaps it’s because Ad Block Plus prevented me from seeing this so-called “ad”.
Also, I don’t get zoonews’ post.

Does Ad Block Plus even block images posted in the DBD? I guess it does, but is that intentional?

no, images and avatars in the DBD’s come through just fine. It’s just all the ads that are blocked.

You give potential love partners a waiver? Don’t you have your wife’s on file?
I bet the waiver says something about potentially getting honked and how they don’t have the right to end the interaction if a honking occurs.

The Minnesota Timberwolves and Washington Wizards executed a deal just about an hour ago.
The Washington Wizards have agreed in principle to acquire Minnesota Timberwolves guards Randy Foye and Mike Miller for Etan Thomas, Oleksiy Pecherov and Darius Songaila and the fifth pick in Thursday’s NBA draft.
This is a huge deal draft-wise and many people speculate that the Timberwolves will make the best push for the Grizzlies and their second overall pick in order to draft Ricky Rubio. Minnesota now has four picks in the first round and probably a really good shot to trade up to grab their guy.

If Minnesota isn’t able to get a deal done for the number 2 pick let it be noted that this will turn out to be an absolutely awful trade for them.

Well, hey, maybe not. They’re in a spot to grab both Stephen Curry and James Harden. That could work out really, really well.

From the creator of Pearls Before Swine - a Cal grad with a hilarious blog.
Why you should always wear your Cal shirt.
My eleven-year-old son goes to school with twins, Zach and Max. They fear me.
I’m not sure when the tradition started, but when I see them, I chase them, as though I’m going to beat them up. I don’t know why they think that. Perhaps it was due to the few times I caught them and beat them up. I’ve pushed them down, thrown them into the mud, sat on top of them and pulled their hair.
Now before you judge me because I weigh three times what they do, consider this: There are two of them.
Consider this as well: I give them immunity if they are wearing a t-shirt that bears the name of my alma mater, the University of California. They now each have several.
As I was about to walk into Whole Foods this morning, the guy working the cafe wildly flagged me down through the window because I was wearing a Cal shirt. walked in, found him, had a good chat. Nice guy, if not a little exciteable.
I haven't seen that many tear-stained dollar bills since my dad hired a stripper for my uncle's funeral.
I spent yesterday meeting people at my job. One of the people knew I was from Cal (and had done her undergrad at Cal) and yelled “Freshmen More Wood!” when she saw me.

A sandwich place. I went for lunch with other people from work so I let them lead. It was some place on Montgomery, but I couldn’t find a name anywhere. They had a pretty quality selection of sandwiches/lunch-food, though.
Not dirt cheap, but far from unreasonable for lunch.

oh, and welcome to the monty/market lunch area. Rishi and I are familiar with many of the lunch places.
Well, when Rishi is able to get out for lunch that is…
I don’t think so, this one was between Bush and Sutter. I actively looked for a name but couldn’t find one for the place.

And today I’m a former member. Tomorrow you’ll still be a dick.
All jokes aside, being a part of Rally Committee was one of the most fun things I did while at Cal. It doesn’t get a whole lot of respect from too many students/(young alums), but the level of connection you get to the University (its history, its buildings, its traditions) is something you can’t get and cultivate too many places. Plus, it makes meeting older alums (read: networking) much easier when you can tell them that you fired the cannon, that you helped build the Bonfire and helped run a 10,000 person event.
Plus, by virtue of being around various sporting events (provided you do go), your heckling skills increase +5.

I was, have been, will continue to be, and are a dick for reasons that have NOTHING to do with your campus affiliations.
That said, I am sure there are many positives to being in rally comm. The next time you stalk me at a Cal event maybe you can stop me, say Hi and explain them to me.

I was trying to apply the reputed exchange of Churchill’s to my interaction with you (“Bessie, you are ugly, but come tomorrow I’ll be sober” or something to that effect). I’m well aware of your dickness having nothing to do with me. I don’t want that sort of blame on my conscience.
I do not stalk you. I just happen to notice you at events I go to due to you and your ridiculous outfits. Also, that’s the creepiest invitation to greet someone that I’ve ever received.

I’m pretty sure it’s ok for cal band members to mock rally comm – we have the same ‘connection’ with the campus that you do as well as tradition, potentially moreso in both instances.
