DBD 6.3.09 (School) Year in Review

Well school finished today for me. It was a good year, other than the fact that I got sick and missed a month in school. I think Cal has been out for a few weeks now, and so this is a look back at this past season of Cal athletics.

Star-divide

First, football. The team went 9-4 with a bowl win over Miami. Personally, I think it was a successful season. It wasn't groundbreaking, sure, but it was a solid season and one that we can be proud of. This wasn't the most talented team, but I think the played to their level. Any non-elite team is bound to lose on mistake game a year (Arizona), plus we lost 3 tough road games. All of the teams we lost to won bowl games. I am giving this season a grade of B+. Solid, and a good building block for future success. What grade would you guys give the season?

Now basketball. To quote CBK "Holy Balls Wow". We expected nothing and got a great season. Monty laughs at you and your predictions of us being 9th in the Pac. Jerome Randle found himself, PChris made himself into a draft pick, and JORGE IS A FUCKING GOD. This season gets an A. Who cares that we lost our NCAA game. This season was a treat. What grade would you guys give the season?

I was going to do a list of all the teams that finished in the top 4 of their sport, but finding out the info on this was harder than anticipated. If you want to give a shout out to any team, I can include it in the post. I believe we are currently 5th in the Director's Cup. All hail Sandy!

I totes was about to put up a DBD but I got lazy. Good thing I’m lazy!

I’d give the football season a “B” or so. I think we met expectations in regards to our overall W/L record. Prior to the season I was thinking we were about an 8-4 or 9-3 team.

As for next season, I’m not drinking the preseason top-15 koolaid. I think we’re about a 7-5 to 9-3 team again. More towards the 7-5 range if our passing doesn’t improve, and more towards the 9-3 range if our passing improves. If everything really comes together next year, perhaps 10-2, but the likelihood of everything coming together rather than one or two things is less likely so I’m not betting the bank on a 10+ win season.

I am chugging that top 15 Kool-Aid. I think we have a shot (albeit a slight one) at going undefeated. I predict an 11-2 season.

10-2. I always presume we win the bowl game.

I predict a split of Oregon/USC plus a token loss.

IMO, IF our passing improves, and IF our run game stays the way it is (or even gets better), and IF our defense stays just as good, we could be a dangerous Top-15 or Top-10 team. But that’s a lot of "if"s.

by HydroTech on Jun 2, 2009 10:24 PM PDT up reply actions

Well I think our run game is going to get better and our passing will definitely improve (question is how much). Plus as long as we’ve got the best defensive line in the Pac and SydGOD, the D will be just fine.

Here is the thing, I get what you’re saying, but EVERY team has a ton of questions going into the upcoming season. And when I say every I mean every team in the Pac-10.

I really don’t see how Cal has that many more questions than either SC or Oregon. Moreover, we’re returning every skill position player, every member of the defensive line and secondary, and I’d argue this is the deepest roster in modern Cal history.

I don’t think there is a possibility at all that Cal goes 7-5 unless everything implodes and we have 2007 style chemistry issues. Once Tedford has got this program rolling, 4 losses has been the max sans the 2007 anomaly. Worst case scenario I see 9-3 and best case scenario, sky is the limit.

It'll be just you, me, and Peter Nincompoop.

by BeastMode on Jun 3, 2009 12:39 AM PDT up reply actions

I dunno…I think the most likely scenario, judging by past years, is that we lose to SC and drop a couple of random games (maybe @UCLA and/or @Oregon), regardless of how well the passing game comes together. I would say 10-2 best case scenario (SC and a random).

by HolmoePhobe on Jun 3, 2009 1:05 AM PDT up reply actions

you know

10-2 really isn’t “best case scenario”

12-0 National Champion and/or Rose Bowl Champions – that’s what I call a best case scenario.

I mean a million things could happen – Michael Calvin could be the next coming of Tim Brown. Kevin Riley could play every game like the Air Force is defending him. Jahvid Best could play every game like WSU is trying to tackle him.

by LeonPowe on Jun 3, 2009 2:20 AM PDT up reply actions

I meant that 10-2 is the best-case scenario that’s actually possible, in my estimation.

fuck. Messed that up.

We finally don’t have USC in november. We have shown we can waltz into Autzen and steal a victory. I think with enough momentum Tedford will make sure that this team doesn’t lose focus like 2007. I don’t think it is going to happen, but I definitely think it could. 10-2 is the most realistic scenario in my opinion, but not the best.

by rollonubears on Jun 3, 2009 9:39 AM PDT up reply actions

I know a lot of people are focusing on ‘getting SC’ early because they tend to f-up early. But us and Oregon are still their prime Pac-10 competition, and I think they focus appropriately for the game.

Furthermore, SC will have played a decent amount of games up to that point, including one big game vrs Ohio St. in a hostile environment, therefore the new quarterback should be fairly well adapted to playing college ball.

We all dream of being a child again, even the worst of us, the worst... perhaps... most of all.

by chowder on Jun 3, 2009 9:49 AM PDT up reply actions

Well USC is unbeatable in November. That’s when we usually get them. The thing is, even though USC always gets up for Cal, we seem to play them better than any other team in the country. So I think playing them at home before November gives us a real shot. I am in no way predicting a victory, but I think we have a chance.

Starting in 2003, they have not lost in November. Since 2005 we have played them in November. The 2 times where we got closest to (or actually beat them) were when it was not in November.

by rollonubears on Jun 3, 2009 10:04 AM PDT up reply actions

Sigh. here are USC’s records by month since 2003:
August/September: 19-2
October: 21-3
November: 21-0
December: 8-1
January: 8-1

As impressive as “unbeaten in November” may sound, there is no significant difference between 19-2, 21-3, and 21-0.

by HolmoePhobe on Jun 3, 2009 10:16 AM PDT up reply actions

Not that I disagree with you, but why didn’t you include 2002’s records as well? SC won a BCS game that year too I believe.

No reason in particular – he said ‘starting in 2003’, so I began there.

by HolmoePhobe on Jun 3, 2009 10:48 AM PDT up reply actions

Gotcha

In truth, it’s actually starting in the beginning of his career. I’m pretty confident that PC has never lost in November. The Trojans in ’01 started like 1-5, and then won 5 straight to end the season, though they lost in the bowl to Utah. The rest is history.

by Nashville on Jun 3, 2009 12:06 PM PDT up reply actions

While the rides on the Pain Train and Brock Mansion Party Yacht have been fun, I think its time I hop on the BakBakcycle.

by rollonubears on Jun 3, 2009 10:47 AM PDT up reply actions

Perhaps, though it’s not an idea completely without merit.

One thing that really works in USC’s favor late in the season is depth. Injuries happen, and players get worn down as the season goes on, and while that has certainly caused problems for us in the past (like when we began running out of healthy receivers towards the end of 2004), this sort of attrition really plays into the Trojans’ hands, as their superior depth gives them a further leg up. I think most years’, our first team gives USC’s first team a run for their money; it’s the dropoff that occurs when replacement players are needed late in games and late in the season that makes it truly tough to face USC.

So, basically, you gotta Go Bears!

by ragnarok on Jun 3, 2009 10:29 AM PDT up reply actions

Agree, but depth is not the same thing as month in which a game is played. USC does better late season because they have a deeper bench, not because the month of November magically imbues them with superior football skills.

by HolmoePhobe on Jun 3, 2009 10:51 AM PDT up reply actions

That’s when they hit the stretch run. That’s when they get the most motivated.

Most days I like you.

So there is at least one person here.

I think it is well known that USC has a history of overlooking opponents. They have NEVER done it in November though. I’m really not applying that much weight to playing them early, but I think it will help. I was just pointing it out. But I really shouldn’t voice any sort of opinion on this blog, because HolmoePhobe sits by his computer waiting for me to make any sort of point at all.

You’ve got to learn to be a little less sensitive here. We all do like you here, but you’ve got to realize that sometimes throwing out cliches like “They get more focused” without some rationale (like you just posted above, which helps) is probably going to get you raked over the coals. After all, that’s the kind of spurious comment that makes me avoid comments on Yahoo! Sports and ESPN.com.

I think yellow fever had a suggestion that would serve you well as you grow and start interacting in more and more adult or professional (or unprofessional, in the case of CGB) environments: using cliches and definitive statements like “always” and “never” and “the best ever” only opens up opportunities for people to find fault with your statement and they will stop listening before you get a chance to get your point across. Its advice, not criticism.

Ugh. The “never” is irrelevant. There is no statistically significant difference between a team going 19-1 and 20-0 in a given period of time during the season. That’s why the month is irrelevant. You could make a case for USC being stronger than us later in the season, but treating the month as the independent variable makes no sense because it implies, for example, that if a game were moved from November 1 to October 31, it would diminish USC’s chances of winning.

I think the reason we played them well in 2004 is because we were pretty damn good. As for beating them in 2003, I could see the September game date being a factor. It was relatively early in Leinart’s first year as a starter, so the SC offense was not quite what it became (maybe). More of a factor, though, was that our offensive game plan (in 1st half anyway) was quite effective.

Considering people are describing this defense as the best Cal’s had since the one that pitched two shutouts in 2004, I’d say that’s a fortunate comparison. Likewise they’ll have a brand new QB with this only being his 5th game, and he won’t have seen a defense or secondary like Cal’s up to that point. tOSU lost almost as many players on D last year as USC did.

QB. Some may argue that the O-line and WRs are weak spots as well, but I disagree. I think our receivers were fine last year, just the QBs were having trouble getting them the ball. And I think our O-line is going to be good, provided they stay healthy. Our D-line is fantastic, our secondary has God in it, and as long as we have The Prophet I think our linebackers will be great.

We have shown we can waltz into Autzen and steal a victory.

Uhh…we’ve one one of our last three games at Autzen, and that was on the very last play of the game, after a monster performance by DeSean. I really don’t know how that constitutes being able to waltz in and win.

Your argument for 10-2 seems to be “we are going to get better and Tedford won’t let us get worse”, which is a nice sentiment, but I’m not sure how much predicative value it has.

by HolmoePhobe on Jun 3, 2009 9:55 AM PDT up reply actions

Very last play means stealing a victory. I think the fact that we were able to win at least once in the toughest place to play in the Pac-10 (please don’t bring up all those metrics and crap from that other post) shows that we could do it again. Plus we seem to own Oregon.

Those (Oregon and USC) could be the 2 games that we lose. Otherwise I don’t see a team as talented in the Pac-10. And I think we are more talented than Oregon, but Autzen is scary.

We’re 4-2 against Oregon, which isn’t really statistically significant…I agree that we have demonstrated we can hold our own even in Autzen, but that doesn’t mean we’re going to “waltz in” and beat them.

Also, as far as talent goes, I don’t think Arizona in 2006 or 2008, or a good number of the teams we lost to in 2007 (UW, the ’Furd), were necessarily more talented than us…hence my comment about us normally dropping one or two games randomly.

If you think 2007

was the definition of Bears pain .. . then I suspect life has some bad bad lessons for you.

For example:

In basketball we lost for 25 straight years/62 straight games to UCLA.

In football we lost to UW for 26 straight years.

We didn’t win in the Palouse from 1977 through .. .what 2003? Included in that was a game where we were down 3 points, time running out, on the 1 yard line. THE 1 YARD LINE!!!! And. . . Pat Barnes fumbles.

In 1994 we were beating UW 20-3 and Dave Barr gets injured with about 4 minutes left. No matter – we are ROLLING. Touchdown UW. Onside. Touchdown UW. Onside again (or turnover? I have tried to burn the memory) TOUCHDOWN. Game UW. 24-20.

Ask an older alum about 1975 (USC choking and handing our OUR Rose Bowl spot to UCLA). Ask someone who went to Cal in the 80s about running the weak side option under Joe Kapp. Or J “Bounce Pass” Torchio. The Gilby Era. The Holmoecaust.

Cal Football: If its pain you want, we got it. 2007 – WE WENT TO A BOWL GAME AND WON!!!!! That’s not true Cal pain.

Anyways, almost 20 years of cheering on the Bears have made me very very pessimistic.

Correction to one of these painful moments

The UW game you describe was 1993. We were 5-0, ranked, and coming off the epic comeback vs. Oregon. It was a battle royal vs. UW at Memorial, harkening back to the 1991 meeting when the UW game was essentially for the Rose Bowl. And we actually led 23-3 at one point in the game, and still led 23-17 with under 5 minutes remaining. We thought we were in good shape when Kevin Devine intercepted a pass deep in UW territory. We ran a little clock and lined up a short-ish FG for the normally reliable Doug Brien, which would have put us ahead by 2 scores and prolly iced the game. But he Leland Rix’d it. The horror!

Given another life, UW proceeded to drive down the field and scored a TD with under 30 secs left. UW 24, Cal 23. I sat in stunned silence at Memorial. Felt like somone had kicked me in the stomach. Sort of like Big Game 1990.

How about that? Talking about this doesn’t make me feel better. It still hurts like hell.

I was at that game. The UW QB threw 5 picks in the first half too. We choked that one away big time but I always felt it coming…

I think this was the game I bitterly exclaimed to my father “Why couldn’t I have been born in Talahassee?” This game killed me.

A++ for hoops?

Nah, I’d give it a solid B+. It was a great bunch of guys who played hard and maximized their talent, but and A++ says a memorable season that we’ll be talking about in 50 years.

When P.Chris and Jerome are on the cover of SI with a net around their necks and confetti streaming down behind them and I can buy a special commerative edition of Sports Illustrated celebrating their national championship .. . then I’ll give this basketball season an A++.

by LeonPowe on Jun 2, 2009 10:56 PM PDT reply actions

I think factoring in the fact that this completely revived what was a dormant Cal program is good enough for at least an A-. When I think of this team I think of the 2 year arc of this team, since it is all the same guys. Yes an A++ is a bit much. I’ll change it to an A to make you happy.

Dormant?

I know Ben Braun wasn’t well liked around here much, but I think dormant is a little strong. It’s not like we were in football. NIT in 2008 and NCAA in 2006 – its not like we were a horrible program. We were just very average.

I give men's hoops an A

Monty did an even better job in his 1st year than I thought he could. I didn’t dream he could take this team to the NCAA tournament, especially since it was a team that was unlike the sort he’s won with in the past (i.e., strong inside presence). I hesitate to give an A+, though. Maybe I’d feel differently if we’d won our 1st round game in the NCAAs. We also lost 3 of 4 to close the season, which was a buzzkill.

I really think this next year’s team is going to be great.. All of the talented guys get another year of development. Kamp hopefully gets healthy. Monty better have forced Jorge to dribble at all times during the offseason so it doesn’t keep being so scary when he brings the ball upcourt (seriously, by the end of the year I could predict Jorge turnovers 5-10 seconds before they actually happened). Amoke and Seeley (I know he barely got any playing time, but 3 point play against Washington!?!!?!? ONIONS) showed definite flashes last year. Plus Wilkes is gone, so Zhang should get 30 minutes a game (I can dream, can’t I?). The only negative thing is that Wilkes is gone, which is upsetting because he came into his own that second half of the season. He finally stopped being just a big body on the court and making some nice passes and shots. I would have liked to see one more year developing like that (from what I’ve heard he was a very different player in high school but his knees gave out).

Women's Volleyball!

The Cal Women’s Volleyball team had an amazing season in 2008. They finished with the best record so far in school history at 26-7, with 13 conference wins, finishing 3rd in the Pac-10 (pretty much the strongest conference in the nation for women’s volleyball). They made it to the NCAA regionals for the second year in a row, losing to Penn State, the eventual champions, (just like the year before, except they made it all the way to the Final Four).

Especially losing players like Ellen Orchard and Angie Pressey the year before, the team really stepped it up this year and refined some already pretty awesome skills. So, something to look forward to next year, especially with new recruits being pretty awesome themselves! Plus, the players are very easy on the eyes, which makes the already exciting game even more pleasant to watch. Go Bears!

Mens crew goes for NatChamp:

This Week
California will send five boats, including the nation’s top-ranked varsity 8+, to compete in the 107th annual Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) Regatta that will take place this Thursday, June 4, through Saturday, June 6, at Lake Natoma in Gold River, Calif. Along with the varsity 8+, the Golden Bears second varsity 8+, novice 8+, varsity 4+ and open 4+ will row at the IRA Regatta. Cal’s took third place in the IRA Varsity Challenge Cup, awarded to the winner of the varsity 8+ grand final, and won the freshman 8+ title in 2008. The 2009 Bears, spurred by a stirring varsity 8+ victory in the grand final, are coming off a conference team title at the Pac-10 Rowing Championships on May 17 at Lake Natoma.

The IRA Regatta represents the national championships for collegiate men’s crew, typically known as men’s heavyweight crew, as well as for lightweight men’s and women’s crew. The men’s varsity 8+ champion is generally regarded as the men’s overall collegiate champion, though the IRA Regatta also features an overall points winner which earns the Ten Eyck Trophy. Cal last won the varsity 8+ championship in 2006 and has won it 15 times overall.

Please see the link to the complete three-day regatta schedule above. Each day’s action at this year’s national regatta starts at 8 a.m., with a men’s varsity 8+ heat at 8 a.m. on June 4 and the men’s novice 8+ grand final at 8 a.m. on June 6. A women’s lightweight 8+ heats opens the rowing on June 5. The regatta ends with the men’s varsity 8+ grand final scheduled for 12:15 p.m. on June 6.

Cal assistant coach is assistant coach at Palmer Cup:

DENVER – California’s Walter Chun is the assistant coach for the American collegiate team that plays in the prestigious Palmer Cup, held June 4-5 at Cherry Hills Country Club in Denver, Colo. The event, which pits the top-eight American collegiate golfers against their European collegiate counterparts, is named for golfing great Arnold Palmer and considered the collegiate version of the Ryder Cup. The United States leads the all-time series, 6-5-1.

Chun, a two-time Golden Bears captain who completed his fifth year as a Cal assistant in 2009 after being named the nation’s top assistant coach following the 2007-08 season, will work with Matt Thurmond, head coach at the University of Washington, to coach the American team.

“It’s quite an honor to be here representing my country, the University of California, my parents and family, everyone that’s been involved,” Chun said. “There’s a lot of pride here in wanting to take the Palmer Cup. Bringing it back to this side of The Pond is our goal.”

Last year at Glasgow Golf Club Gailes Links, the Europeans moved to within one victory from tying the all-time series with their 14-10 win.

Cal’s Peter Tomasulo was a member of the U.S. team in 2003. This year’s American team will consist of Bud Cauley of Alabama, Morgan Hoffmann and Trent Leon of Oklahoma State, Jamie Lovemark of Southern California, Adam Mitchell of Georgia, Cameron Tringale of Georgia Tech, Mike Van Sickle of Marquette and Steve Ziegler of Stanford.

Womens soccer is in Italy:

MILAN, Italy – We arrived in Milan late Sunday morning after a difficult time packing the bus. With about a week of shopping under our belts, the athlete and coaching staff’s luggage has seemed to almost double in size! Our first stop was the Duomo, which is the largest Gothic church in the world. The entire church was built with white marble, and it is the centerpiece of the lively and industrious city of Milan.

Many of the players took in some sights such as Castello Sforzesco and the opera house, which is the location of the famous “Last Supper.” Others chose to explore the shopping areas for which Milan is world famous. After a short time of roaming through the boutique-lined streets, we met back at the bus and headed to the much-anticipated Inter Milan vs. Atalanta match.

The stadium and atmosphere was something that can’t be described in words. The energy and excitement created by the fans were incredible. It was thrilling for the staff and players. But more importantly, to the coaches, the enjoyment for us came from witnessing how the players reacted to the environment and how entertained and impressed they were with their surroundings.

And they won:

Today we traveled about an hour north of Erba, a small city where our hotel is located, to Switzerland! Our bus took us to an outlet shopping center with over 160 shops that is just across the Italy/Switzerland border. After spending a few hours there and packing our luggage so full of purchase that the zippers are about to pop, we returned to the hotel in preparation for our second game against another Serie A2 level team.

After a pre-game meal, we hopped on the bus and headed to the city of Como. We arrived at a great field with quite a few fans awaiting our arrival. We started the game relaxed, with Rosie Aguilera, who is normally a goalkeeper, at forward. Coach Neil McGuire had apparently promised this months ago! After a good game, the Golden Bears were victors – winning, 5-0, over their Italian opponents. Sophomore forward Alex Morgan had two goals while redshirt sophomore forward Lisa Kevorkian, junior midfielder Katie Oakes and sophomore defender/forward McKenna-Louise McKetty each scored one apiece.

Tomorrow I am taking off work early and heading to a wedding. Eventually, I need to get to the 5 south. I also am going to be leaving from SFO around 4:00 pm. Should I take the bay bridge to the 580 to the 5, or should I drive through San Jose and cut across on the 120? Does anyone do either commute consistently enough to give me guidance, or am I melvined either way?

I don’t drive on 580 but that turns into a parking lot I’ve been told between Tracy and Pleasanton. I think Spazzy knows more about this freeway.

101 S to San Ho could be treacherous, although I’m uncertain. Might be worth it to cut over to 280, take that to San Ho, and then do the 120 trick. Certainly there must be peeps from the peninsula that could opine on such matters.

Although, with 10+% unemployment the traffic isn’t as bad as it used to be.

I would disagree with this

unless you are really in south SFO. Otherwise, you’re aren’t really going that far north to get to the 580 but then you would be going south and across a longer bridge by going to SM.

I think your best route is bay bridge to 580 to 5. But you will get some traffic between Pleasanton and Tracy/5 split. Sometimes it can be really bad, sometimes not so much. And I would definitely not go down the 101. That is a mess. Having said that I would really really really really strongly suggest you leave no later than 2:00 p.m. from SFO. This would help you to avoid any traffic at all. Leaving at 4 really isn’t going to help you much.

I work out here in Pleasanton with an opposite commute from Oakland. 580 traffic heading out to the valley in the afternoons has been better lately, since everyone lost their jobs and houses and money and stuff. It took me a mere 30 to get from Pleasanton to Brentwood last week instead of the traditional hour.

I think 101/the Bay Bridge will be jammed from the 280 merge to the lower deck, then 580 will be jammed from the maze to Grand Ave and again right before 238 merges, and then again through Livermore.

he bought a oversized freezer (size of 2 traditional ‘fridges) and has it stockpiled to the brim with Costco goodies. He also has a dry goods section, also filled to the brim with Costco goodies, but he doesn’t really know how to grocery shop (his wife does it all) so he has a bunch of perishables sitting on the shelf at room temp.

My wife and I said he should open a Costco mini-mart.

I’d say the uncle because I share the same genetics as him.

Dennis Gates now an assistant at Nevada

Via Red And Black Attack

Gates’ pedigree at Northern is…well short but sweet. He rose fast in only one year, being named the Associate Head Coach at only 28 years old this past year. Last year Gates was an assistant coach for Reach USA Basketball team, whose romp in China was cut short by earthquakes. One of his main duties included mentoring such NIU Guards such as Jake Anderson and Mike Dinunno.

He was also known as a “recruiting guru”, specializing in the Chicago area. His list of recruits reeled in include PGs Bryan Hall from his alma matter Whitney Hall and Dinunno as well. Just this past year he was instrumental in recruiting the highly-touted Tony Nixon, our only class of 2009 signing.

The Nevada situation is that they are trying to replace positions after their Head Coach Mark Fox left to be the new coach for the Georgia Bulldogs. Nevada’s new head coach David Carter was Associate HC for the Wolf Pack since 2004 himself. Nevada is a consistent 20-25+ game winner every single year, but plays in the perennially weak Western Athletic Conference. Gates has extremely high goals for himself in the immediate future, and he feels that he can do so better moving out West closer to his Alma matter in Cal. I can foresee NIU sometime in the near future becoming a school like Nevada, racking up wins in the MAC with postseason appearances every year. Interesting note is that Nevada AD Cary Groth had the same position at NIU until 2003.

Also, our Interview with Dennis Gates from a couple months ago.

is it a 4 cylinder? most cars in australia are, and they tend to like to supercharger their 4 bangers.

Jahvid Best is so awesome, he makes me want to strangle a mountain ox with my bare hands!

by dballisloose on Jun 3, 2009 11:42 AM PDT up reply actions

I don’t know. I just heard about this car yesterday and there isn’t much info out there. Given it’s aggressive styling, it would be silly to put a 4 cylinder in it. The Manaro ranges from V-6s to supercharged V-8s.

Come to think of it, if they put a V-6 in it and released it in the states as the new Taurus SHO, I think it would be a huge hit.

If this is an exclusive for the ozzies b/c it was engineered by them (like the RS Cosworth was for the brits) I still think they could release it here with the Mustang’s V8 and under a different name. Why can’t we have this car??!!

Given all the probs the US auto makers are having, they could use all the help they can get.

by danzig on Jun 3, 2009 11:49 AM PDT up reply actions

a) they would probably canabalize the mustang market, which would make both lines less profitable, because you get less economies of scale with suppliers and manufacturing
b) as the american auto companies shut down or idle manufacturing plants, i think they’d be really reluctant to invest in retooling any of them to fit another car

Game suggestions for Xbox 360?

As I’ve said, I ordered it and it is coming soon. I was going to get a pro, but the elite bundle (with Halo 3 and Fable 2) was so good that I couldn’t pass it up. I also bought Nba 2k9, NCAA college football 2009, and NHL 09. Any suggestions for good games? I am a sports gamer, so keep that in mind.

Are the NCAA games as good as Madden? I was at my friend’s house and we were playing Madden 08. I was completely blown away by how good it was. It looked somewhat realistic, which is incredible for a sports game. That’s when I decided I needed an Xbox 360 (even though I don’t have an HDTV). Are the NCAA games up to par with Madden? I have become somewhat jaded with the games on PS2 because they basically copied and pasted 2008 onto 2009.

If you’re planning on hacking your Xbox so that it can play downloaded games, let me know first. I’ve got some pointers that will help you avoid bricking your DVD drive (I"ve only bricked one, but learned a ton… stupid $50 mistake). I can do the Hitachi and Samsung drives well, though if your Xbox came with the Liteon or BenQ drives… you’re on your own. Hacks exist, but they’re not well supported and I haven’t tried them.

You used to have to hardware hack the Xbox… aka “chip modding”… but now there are numerous firmware hacks (software) that are much more painless. For the Samsung and Toshiba drives the hacks are quiet mature and very well supported.

Nobody has hacked the PS3 yet? Wow. I dont’ have a PS3 so I never looked into it, but after all this time it’s hard to believe that nobody has tried.

A lot of games for the 360 and PS3 have this problem

It was developed on an HDTV (with higher resolution – the size of your TV doesn’t mater) so the text looks way to small or blurry on a non-HDTV

Finally, some pessimism (realism?)

From Doc Saturday:

But it doesn’t approach the gap when it comes to throwing and catching: Clearly the inconsistency in the passing game has been the greatest culprit in the Bears’ persistent underachievement. Best also went over 100 in the losses to Arizona and Oregon State, echoing consistency in defeat by his predecessors — between them, Forsett and Lynch went over 75 yards on at least five per carry in 10 of the Bears’ 13 losses from 2005-07. Based on his own performance and that of other Cal backs under Tedford, Best is a safe bet for Heisman-type numbers. But that won’t take Cal where the pundits apparently expect it to go without a significant leap in consistency by Kevin Riley — who was absolutely dreadful in the losses to Arizona, USC and Oregon State as a sophomore — or whomever takes the reins under the once-vaunted QB guru.

So, basically, you gotta Go Bears!

by ragnarok on Jun 3, 2009 11:57 AM PDT reply actions

Wow, the rushing numbers for the four losses are absolutely miserable…although you could argue that’s because the passing game failed so badly that they were just stacking the box every down.

by HolmoePhobe on Jun 3, 2009 12:09 PM PDT up reply actions

check out the 2nd comment (from a BI poster, too):

It’s worth noting that this entire period (2005-2008) perfectly coincides with Nate Longshore’s tenure as a Cal QB, and as most Cal fans know, the Longshore era has been a model of inconsistency. Some of it not directly Nate’s fault (injuries in 2005 and 2007 forced Jeff Tedford to either play a hobbling starter or a totally green backup), some of it directly his fault (he was horrible in all three 2006 losses, and the 2008 team never settled on a permanent starter, given both his and Riley’s inconsistency).
So what I’m sayin’ is, with Longshore now graduated, there is at least hope for someone else to emerge as the Steady Eddie quarterback the Bears need to take The Leap. No guarantees, but at least there’s hope.

what a fucking dipshit

Bad quarterbacking can sink a team, but a team doing badly is not always due to, or entirely due to, or (in some cases) at all due to the QB’s performance.

by HolmoePhobe on Jun 3, 2009 2:58 PM PDT up reply actions

Yes, I know that. But during that entire period hasn’t quarterbacking been our toughest issue to deal with?

Outside of the 2007 season, almost every part of Cal’s football attack on offense and defense has been up to task. Except for the quarterback.

Here are the passing YPG numbers:

2002: 247.5
2003: 264.6
2004: 235.7
2005: 192.7
2006: 253.2
2007: 241.8
2008: 189.8

Again, only 2005 and 2008 were down years.

Note also rushing YPG:
2002: 108
2003: 168.2
2004: 256.8
2005: 235.3
2006: 162.8
2007: 165.7
2008: 186.2

Looks like rushing dropoff from 2004→2005 was more significant than passing dropoff. I realize YPG is just one statistic, but this seems to contradict the “everything else was awesome but QBs suddenly sucked” argument.

by HolmoePhobe on Jun 3, 2009 3:15 PM PDT up reply actions

Huh? 2004 to 2005 was only 20 yards.

Also YPG isn’t the best stat to use because Cal’s strengths in 2006 & 2007 were their receiving corps; they attempted far more passes than rushes in those two seasons compared to the rest. YPC is a better measurement of quality of performance.

I'm an optimist

Also, an irrationalist.

Cal’s defense this year will probably surpass last year’s defense, and may be the best in the Pac-10, which, given USC, would mean the country. So, most games Cal will probably be able to win with around 21-28 points. Maybe even less.

Jahvid/Shane are capable of developing most of that offense themselves, particularly if Anger plus the Defense provide a short field in which to operate. All that needs to happen is have a game manager who won’t make costly turnovers. And so, looking at Doc Saturday’s breakdown in W/L statistics, Cal fans should take hope. In those wins Cal had an INT % of 2.3%. Over the 276 passes KR has attempted in his career, his INT % is 2.5%. That is a very good omen that Cal, whatever their potential problems on offense, will not beat themselves this year.

by Nashville on Jun 3, 2009 12:36 PM PDT up reply actions

I think people made that argument last year as well – our defense and Best are amazing, so all we have to do is run the ball a lot and not let Riley fuck up. And that worked…most of the time. But not enough.

by HolmoePhobe on Jun 3, 2009 12:39 PM PDT up reply actions

So far, pre-season 2009 looks nearly identical to pre-season 2008.

I think having Anger even stronger, and hopefully a better kicking game from the other guys who use their feet, will mean we have better field position. A strong defense can still break down if they are on the field a lot and/or trying to fight on their own half of the field a lot. So I expect that field position in 2009 could be less of a concern than it was in 2008….which I guess means, as Nashville pointed out, our offense could maybe be just as productive as it was last year and we could win more games?

Jahvid Best is so awesome, he makes me want to strangle a mountain ox with my bare hands!

by dballisloose on Jun 3, 2009 12:44 PM PDT up reply actions

True

And Riley went 3-1 when he was the unquestioned starter. Moreover, his lone loss was arguably not his fault. I think that Cal will win most games that KR has this stat line:

Att Comp % Yds YPC INT TD Rating
58 33 56.9 423 7.3 1 3 131.78

by Nashville on Jun 3, 2009 12:44 PM PDT up reply actions

the compl percetage should be above 60%

and the attempts should be around 30 to 40.

and if the ypc is above 7…..and the td/int is still 3-1

yah, we kill most everyone.

Go Bears Go

by Rocksanddirt on Jun 3, 2009 12:47 PM PDT up reply actions

Need >60% completion passing

passing attempts will probably be between 20-32 per game. Attempts more than 32 means our offense isn’t doing well.

Yards per attempt should be 7+.

by HydroTech on Jun 3, 2009 4:39 PM PDT up reply actions

Keep in mind that about 230 of those yards and all three TDs came after Maryland was already up 22 points…the circumstances of that game were somewhat unique. Also, I’m hoping that Cal will not be using a 58 passing-10 rushing ratio for plays.

by HolmoePhobe on Jun 3, 2009 12:50 PM PDT up reply actions

Lol. Agreed on the R/P ratio.

I guess I have two points bringing up the stat line.

1) KR can pass the ball, so Syd’God forbid we actually get down two quick scores like against Maryland, we needn’t just throw up our hands. 56% is sub-prime, so though I haven’t really reviewed the game clips, I think that’s an equal function of the receivers being

2) Even if we’re not relying on him to get us back into the game, but merely to keep the defense off-balance, he’s not going to turn into Rex Grossman (a.k.a. the cumslinger – link NSFW, words not images) and complete passes to the other team. In fact, he’s yet to have a multiple INT game.

by Nashville on Jun 3, 2009 1:04 PM PDT up reply actions

missed a word

56% is sub-prime, so though I haven’t really reviewed the game clips, I think that’s an equal function of the receivers being very green and playing only in their third game.

Also, not to be used as an excuse, but Cal won’t be playing any games in 100% humidity like the Maryland game was last year. I don’t think you can overstate that.

by Nashville on Jun 3, 2009 1:07 PM PDT up reply actions

Agree. The problem with prognosticating here, I think, is that we don’t know what combination of Riley’s improvement and WR improvement will be enough to take us to that “next level” where we’re going 10-2 instead of 8-4.

by HolmoePhobe on Jun 3, 2009 1:15 PM PDT up reply actions

That’s a fair and level-headed way of putting it. I agree.

by Nashville on Jun 3, 2009 1:21 PM PDT up reply actions

Actually, I think 11-1, not 10-2, is a reasonable ceiling. So, agreement withdrawn.

by Nashville on Jun 3, 2009 1:23 PM PDT up reply actions

I consider 10-2 to be the ceiling because a)I don’t think we can beat USC and b)Whether you want to think of it in intangible terms (an “off day”) or as a statistical outlier, we more often than not end up losing one game completely randomly.

by HolmoePhobe on Jun 3, 2009 1:31 PM PDT up reply actions

Agree with Nashville here. I’ve read a lot of these posts today about “what Cal needs to move beyond the 9-4 pain threshold” and what I don’t see is in the various analysis’s’s’s is where we stand in comparison to other teams in the conference.

Frankly, Cal is possibly/probably the only upper division team that has a chance to be significantly better than last year.

SC- Still very good but a notch below 2008
OSU- Who will play D?
Oregon- I’m not sold on Masoli like so many others. I think he’s a stiff who can run a little and they lost some other important cogs from the ’08 team.

No one else in the Pac will challenge for the conf crown in ’09. Anyway, my point is that with the Pac 10 on a down year and Cal having the potential to improve (even with Riley as is), I think the Bears can do some serious damage.

Just a thought.

Joe Starkey...Scholar, Humanitarian, Cal legend, worst radio play by play man of all time.

by Fire Starkey on Jun 3, 2009 1:32 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah – my arguments tend to be based more on past performance trends than on current roster depth, which I know less about. I can certainly see how our team has potentially gotten better since last year while SC and Oregon have lost important starters.

by HolmoePhobe on Jun 3, 2009 1:40 PM PDT up reply actions

I agree with your points here. I think 11-1 is a reasonable ceiling, though unfortunately it’s probably too much to call it the most likely outcome.

I don’t know what to make of USC because their strength should theoretically be returning their entire offense returns, except their breaking in a new starter at the most important position. Likewise, their defense should be less impressive because you can’t just replace 4 NFL linebackers, but everyone keeps saying their speed has only increased this year.

OSU we should just ask them to forfeit that game, like they were Stanford and this was Rugby. And Oregon is going to be extremely vulnerable on the OLine early in the season. There’s just no way they win out the month of September. @ Boise, vs. Purdue, vs. Utah, vs. Cal.

Was anyone expecting our defense to be as good as it was last year? I don’t think so. We knew it would be good but not as good as it turned out to be. All of it due to the D-Line, in my opinion. Rulon was the most heralded of our defensive ends at the beginning, but he ended up being only the 3rd best. Alualu was solid in 2007 but not great to my memory. He was an absolute monster last year. And Cameron Jordan is Cameron Jordan.

Which is definite cause for optimism against USC because their best unit will be their OLine, probably followed by their receiving corps. That just happens to be, in my incredibly amateur opinion, two of our three top strongest units as well.

Appreciated. It’s interesting – and depressing – that even after losing nine starters on defense and returning ten on offense their secondary still ranks as their number two unit.

Also, re-reading that I didn’t make it terribly clear that I meant our DLine and secondary were two of our three strongest units, which is why it would make sense that we match-up well with what I perceived to be their strongest units.

Corn says Americans’ faith in the power of technology to reshape the future is due in part to their history. Americans have never accepted a radical political transformation that would change their future. They prefer technology, not radical politics, to propel social change.

“Technology has been seen by many Americans as a way to get a better tomorrow without having to deal with revolutionary change,” Corn says.

BREAKING NEWS - Pacquiao vs. Mosley is ON!

I was just watching SportsCenter, and they announced that Pacquiao-Mosley is officially a go for October 2009. Final negotiations are still forthcoming, but Mosley has agreed to a 40-60 split of the purse (favoring Pacquiao).

In other news, I totally called it.

I thought there were talks of him fighting Mayweather? I, like most Americans, don’t follow boxing.

I agree with rollonubears. Boxing is a dying sport. (which isn’t to say that it couldn’t be revitalized)

Seriously, everybody used to care about Mike Tyson and Muhammad Ali. Now? I could probably name 3.

Actually, boxing is doing far better than you think, as evidenced by the 850,000 people that ordered the $55 pay per view for Pacquiao/Hatton. While the heavyweight division is no longer relevant (due to ballooning weights in boxing’s biggest weight class resulting in slower, less athletic fighters), there are two-all time greats still in their prime (Mayweather and Pacquiao), a few guys approaching their primes that are aggressive and have world class skills (e.g. Paul Williams and Kelly Pavlik), legends past their primes but still capable of taking it to the best in the world (e.g. Mosley and Hopkins), and a host of others. I think it is worth giving a chance if you’ve haven’t for a while. My suggestion is watch the 24/7 episodes leading up to Mayweather/Marquez.

It'll be just you, me, and Peter Nincompoop.

by BeastMode on Jun 3, 2009 8:23 PM PDT up reply actions

Oh I think it has definitely rebounded since De La Hoya/ Mayweather. That fight kind of jumpstarted the sport again. It is still a shell of its former self, but its slowly coming back.

While the rides on the Pain Train and Brock Mansion Party Yacht have been fun, I think its time I hop on the BakBakcycle.

by rollonubears on Jun 3, 2009 9:47 PM PDT up reply actions

THe heavyweight might have a sliver of a ghost of a chance if two of the belts weren’t held by two boxers who refuse to fight each other. That’s just freakin’ stupid. I’m not saying I expect them to fight, but something needs to be done – penalize them, something?

That said, yeah, get some lighter, faster heavyweights with quick hands.

I haven't seen that many tear-stained dollar bills since my dad hired a stripper for my uncle's funeral.

by BearStage on Jun 4, 2009 1:56 AM PDT up reply actions

That would certainly help matters, but it doesn’t solve the bigger problem of guys 300 pounds fighting guys 60 pounds or more lighter. There should be a Super Heavyweight division.

It'll be just you, me, and Peter Nincompoop.

by BeastMode on Jun 4, 2009 8:45 AM PDT up reply actions

Didn’t there used to be? Or am i mis-remembering?

But yeah, it’s strange to have one class where’s there’s no weight limit.

Important to consider re: Cal's expectations next year

Everybody wants to figure out if Cal will break into the 10-2, 11-1 category (which I find kind of weird sounding, since we did that once).

Nobody has talked about the potential quality of our Pac-10 Opponents! So here’s a quick and dirty guesstimation.

Teams that will be better

Stanford
Washington

Teams that will be worse:

Arizona
Oregon St.
Arizona St.

Teams that will be the same:

USC
Oregon
UCLA
Washington St.

And, based on that, the order in which our Pac-10 games scare me, from Oh Crap to Jahvid gonna run for 4 Benjamins.

1) USC
2) @ Oregon
3) @ Stanford
4) Oregon St.
5) @ UCLA
6) @ Arizona St.
7) Arizona
8) @ Washington
9) Washington St.

Discuss and/or make fun of my assumptions!

mY order from scary to cupcake:

1 – usc (b/c they are like an NFL team)
2 – uo (fast dudes running all over the place)
3 – osu (cuz they seem to be the team that routinely surprises us)
4 – ucla (b/c of being winless in LA)
5 – uw (b/c of Locker)
6 – su (b/c they have lots of TEs)
7 – asu (b/c it’s hot and the ladies are distracting)
8 – ua (b/c … no real reason)
9 – wsu (i like cupcakes)

Personally, I think UCLA will be better this year. They may still be 5th on your list, but they’ll improve over last year.

So, basically, you gotta Go Bears!

If I thought UCLA had a legit QB back they would absolutely be improved in my mind. Without that…

Maybe it’s only in their house that we have trouble, but I would slot Arizona at #5 and @UCLA at #6.

I also agree with the call of putting Stanford at #3. Cal is going to have a great team – knocking on wood – next year, but Stanford seems to be following a much more upward trajectory at this point than UCLA, ASU, UW, or WSU, and they will be playing for a rivalry game with what will surely be a better QB in Andrew Luck. Because it’s away, sort of, and Oregon St./Arizona are not, it gets the nod at #3.
