DBD 6.19.09 - How Do You Like Your Fridays?
So, no DBD up at this point - figure I may as well post something here.
So, an open-ended discussion here, mostly applicable for those of us that either work or those that are in school and actuall study (anyone?). After a long week of hard work, what do you like to do on Fridays to unwind? We all know my answer (Drink O'Clock in less than ten hours!), but answers vary across the board.
Do you like happy hour? Gym time? Sleep? Spoon with the girlfriend/boyfriend/dog?
And what does the rest of the weekend look like? Catch up on tv/movies? Hang out with family? Friends? Read and learn? Work more? Do whatever the wife says (Twist only)?
Links? We don't need no stinkin' links!
Oh, but Apple is launching a new iPhone today. Stay tuned!

I may go
for Drink O’Clock as well. I haven’t been to Raleighs/Mannys in nearly a month! And after 4 whole hours of work I definitely deserve one or nine cold beers.
Alright, fine, I admit it! "Hydration Technician" really DOES just mean "water boy!"
Raleigh’s was never my place at Berkeley, but they have a quality beer selection at awesome prices.
Fortunately, happy hour in SF is the one time where drinks here may be cheaper. $3 draft beers, $3 lemon drops. It’s going to be sick.
JAI HO!

For some reason inexplicable to all, those who find importance in being on the cutting edge of so many things have decided to always have their photos taken in polaroid. There is always like 1 guy tasked to take polaroid pictures at the party and then hand them out. Later, you’ll find them scanned into Facebook etc etc etc.

Feh!
Consumers have bit hard on the way vodka has been marketed.
Vodka is tasteless – it’s insane to pay twice or three times as much for a “premium” vodka like Grey Goose when it tastes exactly the same as a “cheap” vodka like Smirnoff. There’s no such thing as a “better” vodka except insofar as the cheap stuff (plastic bottle) isn’t filtered enough.
Don’t believe me? Even spirit experts can’t tell the difference between cheap and expensive vodka: http://www.nytimes.com/2005/01/26/dining/26wine.html
by HolmoePhobe on Jun 19, 2009 12:21 PM PDT up reply actions
Well, yes, you can definitely spend too much on vodka, but you do have to spend enough to make sure that it’s filtered properly.
Personally, I’ve enjoyed Hangar 1 quite a bit, and their factory tour in Alameda is definitely worth taking.

I think they should straight up undermine the island and turn the whole thing into a kind of floating boat-island, so when the decency of humanity and truth itself is being swallowed into the beast maw that is Oakland, Alameda can just cut the ropes and sail over to Redwood Shores.

That’s looking like a greater and greater possibility.
Some businesses in town are already grappling with a decrease in business that they say is caused by the temporary closure of the High Street Bridge. Now two more bridges may be closing.
Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has proposed that cities and counties divert their gas taxes to help offset the state’s $24 billion deficit, an idea that Alameda County officials say could result in the Fruitvale, High and Park street bridges being kept raised at night.
The Bay Farm Island Bridge is part of State Route 61 and would not be closed.
“For the county to suggest closing the bridges, it’s just ridiculous,” Mayor Beverly Johnson said. “It’s not like we can drive down another street to get on and off the island of Alameda.”
So, basically, you gotta Go Bears!
You can filter vodka using a Brita filter. It removes almost all of the taste, to the point you can sip it with an ice cube. I’m not sure what effect it has on the alcohol-by-volume though.
Interesting. I’m not being specific enough, but putting it through a brita filter 5-6 times made it seem as though you were just sipping water. But it occurred to me that might have been because the alcohol was filtered out as well. I don’t frankly know.
Good vodka is tasteless. Crappy vodka tastes horrible.
Effen Vodka is my favorite. It is so incredibly smooth, and mixes so well. There’s barely an odor when you open the bottle. Soooo nice.

Five Water Polo players earn All-American:
BERKELEY – Five California women’s water polo student-athletes were named All-Americans, the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches announced Thursday. Junior driver Meghan Corso and junior utility Camille Hewko earned third-team honors, while freshman driver Emily Csikos, redshirt freshman goalkeeper Stephanie Peckham and redshirt junior utility Stephanie Peckham earned honorable mentions.
The five All-American honors are Nos. 39-44 in program history, and this marks the third time at Cal that five Golden Bears have received All-American recognition. Richard Corso has coached nine different players to earn 10 All-America distinctions.
Meghan Corso led the Bears in 2009 with 66 goals, scoring in 36 games and totaling 22 multi-goal games. With her 66 goals, Corso moved into seventh place on Cal’s career scoring list with 131 goals in three years. To read a Q&A with Corso, click here.
Hewko, who was named to the All-Mountain Pacific Sports Federation second team as well as the MPSF All-Tournament Team, was third on the team with 54 goals and had nine multi-goal games. She was named the MPSF Co-Player of the Week on April 7 after she scored four goals to lead the No. 5 Golden Bears to an 11-9 victory over No. 8 Arizona State on April 4. Hewko is also now tied for sixth on Cal’s all-time single-game scoring leaders list after she knocked in five goals at Colorado State on Feb. 8, which was also a team 2009 season high for goals in a game. Hewko also led the team for the third year in drawn ejections and penalties. To read a Q&A with Hewko, click here.

Sandy Barbour, best athletic director of the year!
BERKELEY – California’s Sandy Barbour, who oversees a 27-sport program that has won a combined 53 team and individual national championships during her tenure at the school, has been named one of four regional Under Armour Athletic Directors of the Year by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA).
Barbour joins Penn State’s Tim Curley, Georgia’s Damon Evans and Tulsa’s Lawrence “Bubba” Cunningham as the Football Bowl Subdivision regional winners. She will be recognized during the 44th Annual NACDA Convention at the James J. Corbett Luncheon on Saturday, June 20, at the World Center Marriott Resort in Orlando, Fla. NACDA will honor recipients in the FBS (formerly Division I-A), Football Championship Subdivision (formerly Division I-AA), Division I (formerly Division I-AAA), Division II, Division III, NAIA, and Junior/Community Colleges, along with one international winner.
“Sandy Barbour’s leadership of our Athletic Department has been exemplary and I know that she is a well-deserving recipient of this honor,” Chancellor Robert Birgeneau said. “Throughout her time in Berkeley, she has shown that student-athletes can succeed at high levels both in the classroom and on the playing field. Sandy has helped develop a model program, and with the building of the Student-Athlete High Performance Center well underway, I am excited about the future of Cal Athletics.”
NACDA Executive Director Mike Cleary said that the AD of the Year Award is essential because it highlights the efforts of athletics directors at all levels for their commitment and positive contributions to campuses and their surrounding communities.
“Before the program’s inception, our Honors and Awards Committee recognized a need for an award such as the AD of the Year,” said Cleary. “The program brings to light the exceptional jobs done by athletics directors across the country. These 29 winners exemplify that, providing us with a group of outstanding athletics directors who excel at their jobs.”
Barbour arrived at Cal in September 2004 and has helped the Athletic Department become a mainstay among the Top 10 in the annual Directors’ Cup standings. The Golden Bears finished in the top 15 during each of her first four years in Berkeley and in the top 10 three times, including a high of seventh in both 2006 and ‘08. Cal is currently fifth in the 2008-09 Directors’ Cub standings.

Ayatollah Khamenei could be making a big mistake. He delivered a big speech on Friday (technically overnight for us Americans) to the whole of Iran. Mousavi called off rallies so people could hear it. Now, I dont know whats going on behind the scenes, so if Khamenei is feeling good about the political maneuvering amongst the clerics, he might be more aggressive. If he feels threatened, he might be more conciliatory and try to calm everybody down.
Well, maybe he feels like he has shored up his own power base amongst the clerics, because in his speech last night, he apparently threatened a crackdown on protesting as soon as tomorrow (ie tonight). This could be a large mistake, because things are going to only get worse if they try to put this whole thing down by violence. Could be hubris at work here.
The speech was not at all what the street wanted, passionately defending the vote. Although he did say there will be a limited recount, which is of minimal interest.
So, we’ll see what happens tonight. If Khamenei does crack down on tomorrow’s protests, he could be potentially signing his regime death warrant. Perhaps that is extreme to say, but it’s not implausible.

“We urge that emergency and open meetings of the board be convened to explore the implications of the budget crisis for the future of the UC system,” faculty leaders wrote in a two-page letter signed by Dwight Read, Warren Gold and Ian Kennedy, chairmen of the Faculty Associations at UCLA, UCSF and UC Davis, respectively.

He also only picks 3 Pac-10 teams to make the tourney (UW to win the conference and get a 4-seed, UCLA grabs a 5), though he does have ASU as one of the first 4 out. Looks to be a down year for the Pac-10 (but we kinda knew that already).

Honestly? I don’t think there’s a Top 10 team in the Pac-10. Maybe not a Top 15 team. It just doesn’t look like it will be a great year for the league. Cal and UW (and UCLA) will all get ranked highly in the preseason, because they look the best in traditionally strong league, but beyond that, I think there’s very little to justify such high rankings.
So, basically, you gotta Go Bears!
Exactly, our record will be inflated. I presume we will have another mediocre non conference schedule, and then we will rip through a weak Pac-10.
While the rides on the Pain Train and Brock Mansion Party Yacht have been fun, I think its time I hop on the BakBakcycle.
by rollonubears on Jun 19, 2009 12:31 PM PDT up reply actions
Have they put out the non-conference schedule yet? I expect an underwhelming slate at home, though I’ve heard we’re in the Coaches V. Cancer event in NYC to open the season, and we also play at Kansas this year. Unfortunately, our Big XII / Pac-10 Hardwood Challenge opponent is Iowa State (I think we get the home game this year).
So, basically, you gotta Go Bears!
It is unfortunate that we are playing subpar teams if you want real competition, but in a way it is good because it inflates our record and makes us look better. I feel like a Texas Tech fan saying that but I don’t want this to be just a 2 year flash in the pan. High ranking (and being a program on the rise) = better/more recruits. We really need to play Kansas tough. We are probably going to lose to them (Prediction: Cole Aldrich gets a 20-20). We beat a whole bunch of crappy teams non-conference, ravage through a weak Pac-10 (hoping for at least 14 wins. That’s reasonable because we own Washington’s soul) and then we have a somewhat inflated record, a very high seed in the tourney, and enough talent to use that confidence and high seed to get to at least the sweet 16.
While the rides on the Pain Train and Brock Mansion Party Yacht have been fun, I think its time I hop on the BakBakcycle.
by rollonubears on Jun 19, 2009 1:37 PM PDT up reply actions
I feel like, ultimately, kids look at where a team is relative to its conference, and where it finishes the season (i.e. how far it goes in the tourney). The gaudy win totals make look shiny and pretty, but I think they mostly get ignored (although getting to 20 wins is nice); I know the Tournament selection committee mostly ignores them. And if the wins don’t help you get a better seed, what’s the point?
Well, the point is partially to build confidence and get some wins early on, and I’m ok with that to an extent. It’s also to get home games so that the program can make money. I’m less ok with that, though I understand the reality. However, as someone who attended 75% or so of the Bears’ home games last year, I can tell you that it’s having to pay for a bunch of cruddy home games against teams I’ve barely heard of that has really kept me from going whole hog and becoming a season-ticket holder.
So, basically, you gotta Go Bears!
I went to 0 games last year and I feel guilty about it. Can’t drive yet and my parents don’t feel like driving an hour to Berkeley. Though it will help me get the requisite 50 hours for my license, so that is an excuse to go this coming season. Gaudy win totals also boost local excitement and student excitement.

CougCenter picks Cal to win the Pac10 next year.
Way-Too-Early Pac-10 Power Rankings
1. Cal – New version of WSU 2007-08 … but with more talent. Scary.
2. Washington – Could easily repeat as Pac-10 champs if even one of their big men steps up inside. None of this foo-foo face up stuff; who will get dirty?
3. UCLA – I’m betting Ben Howland can figure out an adequate solution at PG.
4. Arizona – This shows just how fast it drops off after top 3. Depth still will be a major issue, but the combo of Wise and Fogg will make for a formidable backcourt.
5. Oregon State – This is a tough one: Does the Pac-10 stop being fooled by the Princeton offense, or does OSU get even better after another year in the system?
6. Arizona State – Still lots of experience here. Derek Glasser is underrated — I understand, it’s tough to take that chest hair seriously — and Ty Abbott could be the breakout player of the year in the conference out of Harden’s shadow.
7. Washington State – My heart wants to rank the Cougs higher, but with a new coach and still loads of inexperienced players …
8. Oregon – Lots of talent. However, Ernie Kent doesn’t exactly have a track record of coaching guys up to dramatic improvements between their first and second year. Look for the Ducks to be better in 2010-11. If Kent can hang on that long.
9. Stanford – Big losses (Goods, Hill, Johnson) and a solid-but-unspectacular recruiting class don’t scream “mover and shaker.”
10. USC – Until they get a coach and one or two of the as-yet-unsigned recruits, this is a team staring at the bottom of the conference.

Divas taking over the WR position?
Obviously this is nothing new, but here’s a nice excerpt:
“Owners need to hire a head coach who can handle these kind of players,‘’ said Dilfer, whose 14-year NFL career ended with the 49ers. "Coaches need to be a strong enough personality to handle that kind of dynamic. The player has to understand and be convinced he’s one of 53. Crabtree has diva written all over him. All over him. But he’s going to be brought into an environment where Singletary will never let that happen.
“I saw [49ers tight end] Vernon Davis the other day, and he’s as humbled and broken as you can find because of what Singletary has done with him. He’s part of the team. You need a dynamic, explosive player at receiver today. But they have to playing for the good of the team. I’m totally anti-diva. I’m pro solid football players. I’d take two 1B receivers or two 2A receivers over one A-plus receiver any day. You’re a better football team. And the quarterback can now go play his position and not have the offense based on getting one guy the ball.’’

Once you get past the first day, everyone just signs a deal with the same bonus clauses for minimum salaries. I think the only differences are in the bonus amounts. Morrah got peanuts, but then as a seventh round pick he might not even make the team anyway.

“I frankly cannot even believe what I’m seeing, and I can’t stomach the sight for long,” said a pale, trembling Jack Swarbrick, the Notre Dame athletic director who, along with the commissioners of the major conferences, manages the complicated system of polls and computer rankings that make up the Bowl Championship Series in college football. “The elegant logic of actually having teams play one another instead of having a council of their betters select which team is superior to which—that is not what sports is all about.”

Serious Opinion Needed
So I’m Jewish. Recently two friends of mine took a trip to a wax museum in Asia and posted on their facebook pictures of themselves with wax Adolf Hitler. They have faux-solemn expressions and are giving the “heil Hitler” sign to the camera. There are comments by the people in the photo about how hilarious and awesome the poses/picture is. On top of that, the tagger and photo-poster left a caption saying something along the lines of “lol I told you I would tag you in this pic lol!”, and tagged their friend, to ensure that the friend would receive a notification that the photo was taken.
I don’t know what to do.
I’ve known these people for some time and are fairly close to them. As a general rule, I espouse the idea that almost anything is fair game for poking fun of in irreverence. I really and truly NEVER get offended by anyone making fun of my heritage or any other stereotypes of the culture…it has always been that if you just have to laugh at the funny shit that defines our heritage and makes us who we are. Every culture has foibles that can tickle our funny bone and I have almost made it a crusade in my life not to get offended by generally funny trivialities about Judaism and being white. I NEVER want to be “the guy who always gets offended.” But that’s the thing, I’ve never really felt truly offended until now. I’m offended as a jew, and even moreso I’m offended as an American.
I guess I feel extra upset because the two in the photo are Chinese. Both their parents immigrated from China to the US to pursue better lives for them and their children. Their lives and their success at Cal would not even be possible without the work of the allies to take down Japan. I’m almost crying thinking of the idea that thousands upon thousands of allied men died in agony to ensure the US could maintain the institutions which attracted talented immigrants whose children will, in turn, have Laughter Funtime Lulz with Hitler. And just forget the six million who were never given the chance to have descendants who enjoy that freedom…
Should I chastise them? Bitch them out? Do nothing? Say nothing and laugh it off like I’ve always done? I don’t want people to think they have to walk on eggshells when they talk to me…but I don’t want to have that horrible, mocking, trivializing picture up for the masses to laugh at. Ugh, there is no good solution to this.
CGB: Our points are reliable. Our logic is infallible. Our past records are illogical. And our ham is dynamite!
Hmmm. I would talk to the poster about it individually. Say there is a line between playful ragging of other cultures and too far, and that they definitely crossed the line. I wouldn’t comment on the photo because I presume you want to avoid a scene and get characterized as super-sensitive. Tell them that it really isn’t funny, send them photos of the holocaust to get your point across. Tell them that taking a photo that shows them playfully in support of a man who was directly and indirectly responsible for the death of 30 million people isn’t something they should be joking about, and that you really lost some respect for them and would appreciate it if they took it down.

How? Because he was one of the worst leaders ever? Its not that he was pure evil, like Hitler or Stalin (still a very very very bad man), it was that he was a complete idiot with no idea how to run a government. He didn’t understand the concept of getting things done gradually. I WANT TO GET EVERYTHING DONE NOW AND THEN WE WILL BE A WORLD POWER! He really was just an idiot. Not necessarily evil, just incredibly stupid. I would probably be better at running a government then he was. How can Chinese people still love him?

This isn't a pissing contest
But Mao was evil.
At least 65 million Chinese died were purposefully killed under his reign, which – and this is where I really have no intention of making it into a pissing contest – is more than either Stalin or Hitler. True, it wasn’t quite genocide, but Mao vs. the “counter-revolutionaries” was really no different than Stalin vs. the Kulaks.
1) History book left that out, but did include such ridiculously dumb policies as the Great Leap Forward (hmmm. I want to motivate workers. I KNOW! I’LL SEPARATE THEM FROM THEIR FAMILIES AND LOVED ONES! THAT WILL MOTIVATE THEM! SCORE ONE FOR THE MAOSTER).
2) Would you say he was more evil than Hitler? I will learn a lot more in AP Euro next year. Mao just seemed like more of an idiot with no idea what he was doing. Good revolutionary, not so good leader (Fidel was like that too, no?)

History is not a discipline that consists of ranking world leaders by evilness. I realize that the victors write the history books, yada yada, but history still endeavors to study what actually happened as opposed to how we perceive it.
To present an overly simplistic example: it’s more important to know how many people Mao killed, how, and why, than whether it was better or worse than Hitler did. The world “evil” is kind of worthless in this context because it has no objective descriptive value.

That's a bit of an exaggeration
I only took AP Euro for a semester and I managed a 5.
Pay attention in class, take good notes, and do the reading, but the real thing you need to do is just take about 10 practice tests. As many as you can get your hands on.
When I say “were purposefully killed” I don’t mean herded into a gas chamber, though plenty were executed. I suppose that might have been misleading, so don’t please get that impression.
What I meant is that the Great Leap Forward was China’s version of Stalin’s 5 year plan, and its implementation was directly responsible for the death of millions. The Cultural Revolution was more like Stalin’s purges. As you can see, I’ve studied a lot more Russian history than I have Chinese, so that ends up being my baseline comparison.
My baseline comparison is Mack Brown’s 04 Massacre where he murdered all voters who voted for Cal bove Texas.
Supreme Leader Ayatollah TwistNHook!
www.CaliforniaGoldenBlogs.com
wouldn’t that imply that Mack Brown actually murdered Jeff Tedford nearly five years ago, and our team has been coached by Zombie Tedford ever since?
So, basically, you gotta Go Bears!
How do you define evil? Is there a certain number of people you have to kill to be evil? IMHO it’s better to stick to descriptive terms like “murderous” or “genocidal” than normative terms like “evil”.
Good question
and a reasonable point re: descriptive adjectives. I just think that evil is one of the few words powerful enough to describe the actions of those three men. If I need an actual definition, I would describe an evil person “as being acutely insensitive to the sufferings of innocents while acting with malevolent intent.” But don’t hold me to that.
Charles Manson is fairly described as murderous and evil, but not genocidal. Mehserle is murderous but not evil. Mao, Stalin, and Hitler are all three.
Again, I don’t have a great answer, and as I admit above, part of the reason for the use of evil is to provoke the emotional reaction.
No, I mean, like there are pictures in the same album of them hugging Mao and holding up the Little Red Book.

Really?
China as a political entity has only existed for about 3000 years. It certainly wasn’t unitary for much or more of that time. It was conquered by other states for a significant length of time. And it’s hard to see many similarities between most of the imperial dynasties and the PRC. I’m not sure how you can the current administration a continuation of empire.
Empire isn’t the perfect word.
But China has been autocratic and authoritarian since at least Shi Huangdi and his Chi’in dynasty. Though probably apocryphal, the stories relating to his construction of the Great Wall of China describe how the bones of all the workers who died were thrown into the interior of the wall.
The Manchus, even with their meritocratic exams, Chiang Kai-Shek, Mao, Deng Xiaoping, and Hu Jintao all fit the bill of leaders presiding over an “autocratic and authoritarian regime.”
Yes, and Japan was an authoritarian regime until 1945. France was an authoritarian regime until the late 1700s. Most states were authoritarian until this century.
Just because Shin dynasty China and the PRC were both authoritarian doesn’t necessary imply any other similarities.
Right. And if Japan was still an authoritarian country and if France was still a bastion of Absolutism then those examples wouldn’t work. Which is why the fact that China still has a significantly authoritarian when so many other countries have gone away from that governmental model is a reasonable and relevant observation.
But it’s a completely different form of authoritarianism.
It’s like saying that the Colts under Manning are a “continuation” of the Colts under Unitas because both of them are good QBs. Just because two regimes share one attribute doesn’t mean that one is a direct continuation of the other.
First, great analogy. Second, I agree, they are different forms of authoritarianism in their sources of power and what they purport to represent. For instance, the dynastic period of Chinese history derived its legitimacy from the idea of ‘the mandate from heaven,’ etc. Mao and subsequent dictators rely more on the “will of the people” phenomenon.
In spite of those differences, you would agree, would you not, that the same basic authoritarian methods apply? That is, that neither tolerated dissent, executed political opponents, tightly controlled economic policy and exports, engaged in violent power struggles, offered patronage, so on and so forth.
To use an analogy of my own, I can’t imagine you’d care much whether you were in the Gulag or Dachau if you were staring certain death in the face, no matter the fact that National Socialism and Stalinism were very different forms of totalitarianism.
holy fuck this is an awesome statement

Chiang ran Taiwan under martial law for almost 40 years and killed close to a million people in just one escape attempt (blowing up the dams)
Chinese history is some fucked up shit.
The official view – and what most people who good perspective on what happened – is that Mao was 70% good and 30% bad. There’s a huge huge premium placed on Mao uniting the country again after some 40 years of constant civil war and getting rid of a lot of social ills like prostitution, drugs, beggars (it’s difficult to be more poor, when everyone is poor). Even amongst Chinese who are highly critical of Mao, they’d still argue that his first 7 years (from the revolution in 1949 – or “liberation” as they call it here) through maybe the 100 Flowers Movement, he did a lot more right than he did wrong.
Now as to the damage Mao did to the country – let’s take a look at the two key periods of fuck up in modern Chinese history under Mao:
1. The Great Leap Forward – a combination of staggering incompetence with 3 years of the worst famine in several thousand years and also a fall-out in relations with the Soviets (which meant that they couldn’t get help from the Russians). It was the 2nd five year plan under the Communist government – based on collectivization and co-ops. The real disaster comes with Mao’s proclamation that China would surpass the UK in steel production – and takes, what, 50% of the farming workforce out of the fields and into their own backyards and forces the communes to try to produce steel in the backyard. Yeah, that really didn’t work. Combined with the famine, the reduced farming workforce, the disaster of collectivization into one big clusterfuck and you get anywhere from 15 – 50 million deaths. There’s a whole lot of incompetence not mentioned – like the deep sowing of seeds, distribution of food problems. So the question is – was this evil . . . or just a downhill rolling snowball of increasingly horrible ideas and the stubborness of a peasant distrusting intellectuals? (I don’t have an answer for that. Is it a different degree of evil to refuse to listen to experts, refuse to ask for help because of pride and stubborness – as opposed to marching people into death camps? People in the end are still dead)
2. The Cultural Revolution – much lower in the death tolls (probably somewhere between 500,000 and 1 million) but psychological damage it inflicted on society continues through nowadays – and its not difficult to draw a direct line from Deng’s treatment during the Cultural Revolution (purged and exiled) to his reactions in 1989.
As for the authoritarian government – I think its instructive to take a look at what I’d believe a good percentage of the Chinese people currently believe. They credit the central government with the openness and progressive economic policies which have created a small, but significant middle class and taken much of the country out of absolute poverty to well, less poor. But there is a large large undercurrent of deep rooted anger against local governments here. City, county and provincial governments are almost universally vilified as corrupt, profiteering scum who are in the pockets of land developers, factory owners, brothel owners and gangs. A Chinese social critic has recently said that all over the country there are Tian’anmen Squares happening every single day. What he meant was that there are social protests – mainly rural or suburban – against local government or police happening on a regular basis. And that’s where the anger is directed. The central government is seen as non-corrupt and a beneficial force – but there is so much anger here at local level – and even in a big city where I live, its palpable.

hmm, bro code says a ‘dude, not cool’ should get the point across. Then they should go with a ‘dude, my bad, bro’. Then beer + high fives = moving on.
I’m of the opinion if you’re bothered by something feel free to speak up. If they can’t handle it or don’t get it, that’s their issue.
I left a note that said “you DO know who that is right?”
and the poster responded with “yeah didn’t he have something to do with the VW you just bought?”
I don’t think the point was gotten across…

Actually there is one article in the Bro Code that I vehemently disagree with and almost ruins the whole book for me (pulls out Bro Code which he keeps handily on his desk). Article 141, which states: A Bro can only get a manicure if (a) he’s trying to sleep with the hot Asian woman performing the manicure, or (b) it’s been longer than a month since his last manicure. It’s called the Bro Code, not the Slob Code.

They're your friends so you'd know
but what if you found a google image of the Spanish basketball team making slant eyes and tagged them in it? That’s if you’re just going for pure insensitivity. That or build a scale model of Nanjing 1937 and mail it to them. That’d be pretty dick too.
Otherwise, punch them out and then offer to buy a beer. Or just specifically address their actions without leaving room for ambiguity.
Right.
The brokenness will represent the city post-Japanese invasion. And the note would make it clear what all the brokenness represented…
/nevermind. Idea fail.
Personally, I don’t find jokes about history offensive. There’s a big difference between “look it’s Hitler lol” and “I hate Jews and we should nuke Israel”. Or in my case, I wouldn’t find a joke about Gandhi or Indians running 7-11s offensive, but I might find a comment about how Indians aren’t real Americans (which I have been told) offensive.
I mean, for example, would you find this video offensive?
Also it’s a little bit specious for you to suggest that their being Chinese means they’re unappreciative of American (or Jewish) losses in WW2. Don’t forget that 20 million Chinese died in WW2 – a hell of a lot more than anyone else except the Russians.
Having said that, if you do find it offensive, I would say something along the lines of “dude, that’s actually pretty fucked up”. It seems like a stronger reaction than that might be lost on them.
I mean, for example, would you find this video offensive?
Not really; they used it as a vehicle to make fun of a football team. In the photo they are doing a heil Hitler and laughing about it. There is no joke and no punchline…

This is certainly true, however I think my overall point still stands. If I immigrated to China I certainly wouldn’t be disrespecting their military sacrifice by hanging up posters of the Emperor.

It seems 99% likely to me that these friends of yours aren’t out to offend anyone; they simply haven’t been properly educated about Hitler and what their behaviour actually signifies. I think it’s entirely appropriate to take it upon yourself to educate them, letting them know what sort of (hopefully unintentional) hatred that they are implicitly endorsing You should tell them that a) this isn’t cool, and b) here’s why. Then end with a Jew joke; you know, one of the less-offensive ones that Twist would tell.

Honestly, if you think you are not easily offended, you shouldn’t really be offended by this. It doesn’t sound like they set out to offend Jews with this, especially if they were mocking Hitler…
Also, being an immigrant Chinese should not be a conditional in determining whether they can be irreverant towards other people’s cultures or not. Would you feel less offended if it were two Jews in the picture? What about two Germans? Really, I think the fact that they were Chinese has nothing to do with the offensiveness of the gesture.

For Li’l Wayne, I thought it was a decent album. I’ve never really been a fan of his, and this was the first album where I thought he had a decent set of songs.
Let the Beat Build, Got Money, and Dr. Carter were strong tracks. I think A Milli was the knockout punch on the album. Still wasn’t quite good enough for me to buy it.

The point is that not everyone is offended by the same things. It’s not necessarily a matter of degree (ie. everyone is not necessarily more offended by people who killed more Americans). Even if that were a more rational reason to be offended, that’s not how people think.

I think you’re really just asking everyone if you’re overreacting or not…. and if we too would be offended by the picture. In my opinion, if you were to tell them that this picture is offensive and should be taken down… it would be perfectly normal. It would also be fine if they told you to fuck off. Calling up the anti-defamation league and making a big stink would be overreacting.
I think what really needs to happen is you need to determine intent. If they really are your friends, AND they really didn’t mean to offend you…then you getting offended should be enough for them to take it down immediately. If they start to fight to keep the picture up… then you need to start wondering.
I think intent is important… otherwise The Producers would’ve been sued by every Jewish group in NYC multiple times by now.

I agree with most of the comments here that them being Chinese or immigrants shouldn’t change the way we judge their act. I also agree that we’ve become too thin-skinned as a country and can’t take a frickn joke anymore.

Interesting article on the future in Iran from the Guardian. They sketch out 4 possible end games here:
Four scenarios
Happy ending
To widespread surprise, the hardline Guardian Council conducts a thorough recount of votes, as ordered by Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, and decides, amid much embarrassment, that there should be a new election. Mir Hossein Mousavi wins. Mahmoud Ahmadinejad accepts defeat. Pro-democracy demonstrators celebrate triumph of “green revolution”. New government responds positively to US invitation to “unclench fist” and open talks on nuclear issue.
Damp squib
The partial recount ordered by the Supreme Leader concludes Ahmadinejad won a clear victory, although by a narrower margin. Despite lingering suspicions of foul play, the opposition is forced to accept the verdict amid a continuing nationwide crackdown on dissent and warnings that further disorder will be dealt with harshly. Ahmadinejad, in bad odour with the Supreme Leader for provoking demonstrators, moderates his line on policy issues. Mousavi vows to fight again.
Confrontation
The Guardian Council’s partial vote recount and investigation into electoral fraud are rejected by the opposition. Demonstrations spread and intensify, with ever greater numbers of Iranians taking to the streets calling for the resignation of Khamenei and Ahmadinejad. Security forces respond with increasing force, arresting thousands and closing down media coverage, texting networks, websites and Twitter. Purge of reformist leaders, intellectuals, students and journalists continues. Leaderless demos gradually peter out, leaving resentment. Ahmadinejad steps up anti-western rhetoric. Resumed protests at a later date considered highly likely.
A second revolution
An insider cabal of senior clerical and establishment conservatives challenges Khamenei and forces his resignation after a vote in the Assembly of Experts. Former president Hashemi Rafsanjani is elected in his stead and orders an investigation into the actions of Ahmadinejad and other senior members of the regime. Hardliners rally round the president while reformists demand new elections. Amid growing instability, Iran’s unique Islamic/secular system of governance appears in danger of collapse.
One and two are no longer going to happen. One, bc Khamenei pretty much is holding firm. Two, bc the protestors arent going to be fooled by some inane recount.
Now, 3 seems like the most likely one. Because 4 would be incredibly difficult to pull off. But the chance of 4 occurring rose today (or, more accurately, yesterday). Theres going to be huge protests tomorrow and if Khamenei is going to stick to his guns, there will be huge bloodshed.
And then it becomes a dangerous game of chicken. Does Khamenei have the balls to put these protests down through violence and intimidation? Is there enough violence and intimidation to put these protests down?
These are truly exciting, if somewhat terrifying, times to be alive.

Um, yes, this Iran situation is complete and utter madness.
The best part is no one knows what’s going to happen.

No way in hell 1 or 4 happen. 2 and 3 aren’t that different from the regime’s POV – it depends on how the protestors react.
I still think that at the end of the day, if you start shooting people, most of them are going to bail. My money is on #2.
The diff btwn 2 and 3 is that essentially in 2 the protestors grit their teeth and go “Ok,well, this sucks but what choice do we have?” and move forward. In 3, the protestors go "HELL 2 DA NAW!’ but then after a week or soof violence, they bail like you say.
I think 3 is more likely, just because I think itll take some honest to goodness largescale violence to get these protests to stop. Small amounts will only intensify it.

I mean when you have hundreds of thousands of protesters, you need to do more than kill and arrest several hundred or even several thousand.

what a mess.
I think 3 is the most likely, and that it will escalate into either something along the lines of number 4, or some manner of complete nationhood collapse.

Justice? I'm sorry, we're all out of that.
Donte Stallworth pleads guilty, gets 30 days in prison.
MIAMI (AP) — Cleveland Browns wide receiver Donte’ Stallworth began serving a 30-day jail sentence Tuesday for killing a pedestrian while driving drunk in Florida, a punishment made possible by his cooperation with investigators and the fervent wish by the victim’s family to put the matter behind them.
Stallworth, 28, also reached a confidential financial settlement with the family of 59-year-old Mario Reyes, a construction worker struck and killed early on March 14 by Stallworth, driving drunk in his black 2005 Bentley.
Stallworth had faced 15 years in prison for his DUI manslaughter conviction. After his release from jail, he must serve two years of house arrest and spend eight years on probation. The house arrest provisions will allow him to resume his football career, his attorney said.
I just cannot abide this bulls***. It just sickens me that being an athlete means that you can plea out to a month in jail and house arrest, while reaching a “financial agreement” that keeps you from going to trial.
One of my dear friends was convicted of DUI manslaughter. She was just as sorry about the incident as Stallworth. She was just as horrified by what she had done as Stallworth. She has to live the rest of her life with what she did, just like Stallworth does. She is a good person with a good job who made a horrible mistake, just like Stallworth.
So why is my dear friend serving a prison sentence of 13-15 years, while Stallworth gets to go home after a month? Why does he get to resume his career, while her life doesn’t resume until her mid-40’s?
Maybe if she were athletically gifted, she’d be home too.
I haven't seen that many tear-stained dollar bills since my dad hired a stripper for my uncle's funeral.
I wonder how much this ridiculously short prison sentence has to do with Stallworth’s fame, and how much has to do with his ability to reach a “confidential financial settlement” with the family. I can’t believe that didn’t play a role in the family’s “fervent wish” to put the matter behind them.
So, basically, you gotta Go Bears!
Yeah, that’s gotta be a major part of it. If Stallworth were a regular schmoe, they’d throw the book at him and put him away for as long as possible.
I guess that’s the thing – if you can convince the family not to press charges, you’re home free.
Still makes me sick.
I haven't seen that many tear-stained dollar bills since my dad hired a stripper for my uncle's funeral.
Dude, both your friend and Stallworth should be in jail for 15 years. Stallworth’s a prick for buying his way out of prison, but your friend is no angel…I’m sorry.

I wasn’t saying that my friend shouldn’t be in prison. That wasn’t my point at all, not really sure how you got that. I was saying that Stallworth should be in prison, and i was disgusted by the fact that he was basically able to buy his way out of it.
That said, I do think it’s twisted that you get more time for a crime like this than you do for rape.
I haven't seen that many tear-stained dollar bills since my dad hired a stripper for my uncle's funeral.
Yeah, sentencing is fucked up, but then again there’s so many gray areas. What is the punishment’s purpose? To punish, eye for eye style? Or to dissuade others from committing the crime?
I would think that the “harsh” penalty for DUI manslaughter is designed to dissuade others from doing something incredibly stupid (DUI) that kills thousands of people every year, but not inherently evil or with malicious intent. But the “soft” penalty for rape is designed to punish one person for their heinously evil act, which, though terrible, is not as likely to kill an innocent than DUI.
CGB: Our points are reliable. Our logic is infallible. Our past records are illogical. And our ham is dynamite!
by Spazzy Mcgee on Jun 19, 2009 5:13 PM PDT up reply actions
But to imply, as the lighter sentencing does, that the physical and psychological damage inflicted by rape is less heinous is crazy. I mean, the sentence should be a punishment and a deterrent, and a longer prison term would definitely be that.
(and interestingly, there is a question of whether my friend it should have been charged with DUI manslaughter or regular manslaughter, which would have seriously affected the sentencing, but that’s not germane to the discussion.)
I haven't seen that many tear-stained dollar bills since my dad hired a stripper for my uncle's funeral.
that the physical and psychological damage inflicted by rape is less heinous is crazy.
Well, killing someone is generally thought of as worse than rape. Also, it seems like DUI manslaughter sort of NEEDS a larger deterrent factor simply because it is so easy to do…literally millions of people drink on a daily basis and millions more drive, too. The psychological fucked-uped-ness required to rape someone means the pool of potential criminals is way, way, way smaller, meaning sentencing is more about punishment and less about deterrence…
CGB: Our points are reliable. Our logic is infallible. Our past records are illogical. And our ham is dynamite!
by Spazzy Mcgee on Jun 20, 2009 1:14 AM PDT up reply actions
I hear what you’re saying, and I agree that the sentence for rape is less deterrence than it is punishment – but I just feel like the heinous nature of the crime ought to dictate much worse punishment than it currently does. Moreover, it being a willful act (as opposed to manslaughter) should play into the punishment.
I haven't seen that many tear-stained dollar bills since my dad hired a stripper for my uncle's funeral.

I wish I could sit Ayr and Runnie Dub and Dumpster Muffin down and show them that video and others of its ilk and tell them that what they do is nothing in comparison. That its just the extension of their ego and little more. But theyd never get it.
