DBD 6.16.09: The DBD with No Name

We're in the middle of the desert known as The Offseason where all the jokes and stories have dried up.  I'm out of Bama FoW pics and already used my Random Hot Women from Facebook card yesterday.  I've also told too many "I have a small penis" jokes that FireStarkey is starting to believe that it's true.

I suppose at this point I should cut to the news.

"I feel that I need to do the right thing here and apologize for having told that joke," he said. "It's not your fault that it was misunderstood, it's my fault that it was misunderstood."

Letterman made several references to the issue during his monologue, introducing himself as "Dave Letterman, good will ambassador." He said he got a call from his mother earlier in the day telling him she was siding with Palin.

When he began a joke about Bernard Madoff, whom he called "the most hated man in America," he then amended that to a list of two.

"Me, Bernie Madoff," he said. "He was waaay out in front until a couple of days ago."

Wilner's bowl lineup wishes:

No. 1
Current: Rose vs. Big Ten champ.
My choice: Rose vs. Big Ten champ
Comment: No reason to change what has worked for ages.

No. 2
Current: Holiday vs. Big 12 No. 3.
My choice: Alamo vs. Big 12 No. 3.
Comment: The Alamo currently matches the Big 12 No. 4 vs. the Big Ten No. 4/5 but is attempting to upgrade its profile and payout — it has already moved from late December to January. If it’s successful in climbing the Big 12 ladder, and if the Pac-10 could arrange to send its runner-up to San Antonio (popular city, Texas recruiting exposure, big-name foe, plenty of media exposure, a second January game), it would totally change the look and feel of the league’s postseason lineup.

No. 3
Current: Sun vs. Big 12/Big East/Notre Dame
My choice: Holiday vs. Big 12 No. 4.
Comment: As the No. 2 bowl in the Pac-10 lineup and a non-January game, the Holiday is merely average. But it would be a strong, strong, strong No. 3, and in that slot, it could keep its December window without looking quite so yesterday. (Note: If the Alamo moves up in the Big 12 pecking order, it would presumably bump the Holiday down one notch to No. 4 from its current spot at No. 3.)

No. 4
Current: Emerald vs. ACC 5/6/7 … or Las Vegas vs. Mountain West No. 1
My choice: Emerald vs. ACC No. 5/6/7.
Comment: The Emerald matches two BCS leagues in a major league facility (AT&T Park) in a world class city (San Francisco) with a terrific ESPN broadcast window (Saturday evening). That opponent-location-exposure combination allows it to more than hold its own as a No. 4.

No. 5
Current: Emerald vs. ACC 5/6/7 … or Las Vegas vs. Mountain West No. 1
My choice: Las Vegas vs. MWC No. 1
Comment: Basically, this would eliminate the Vegas/Emerald partnership for No. 4/5 spot — just make the Emerald the permanent No. 4 and Vegas the permanent No. 5 and be done with it. Given Las Vegas’ status as a destination city, the Pac-10 should hold onto this game as long as it can.

No. 6
Current: Hawaii vs. WAC
My choice: Sun Bowl vs. Big 12/Notre Dame.
Comment: The Sun has been the Pac-10’s No. 3 bowl for years and, as such, is the greatest example of the league’s second-class lineup: Not only is it a bad matchup (recent opponents: South Florida and Pitt), it’s a bad matchup in El Paso, often on New Year’s Eve — only the most desperate Pac-10 teams/fans are excited about participating. However, as the No. 6 bowl in the Pac-10 pecking order, and without the Big East component, the Sun would be just fine. (Note: This will never happen, because the Sun has enough money to keep buying its way into a prime position in the Pac-10 lineup. Also, I’m not sure the Sun could maintain its tie with Notre Dame while dropping the Big East.)

No. 7
Current: Poinsettia vs. MWC
My choice: Poinsettia vs. MWC/WAC No. 2
Comment: The four-year-old Poinsettia is a more appealing option here than the Hawaii Bowl because it’s easier/cheaper for fans and the recruiting exposure in San Diego/Southern California trumps what Hawaii has to offer. And in my ideal world scenario, the bowl would have its choice of the non-champions from the MWC/WAC, providing a quality matchup for the Pac-10 entry.

Calogne on MVB # 6

I didn’t select Thompson based on his punt-return abilities, but you could easily place him on this list by that alone. Thompson is so good, that you could make a case for him being higher on this list.

Of all the cornerbacks to come through the program in the last twenty years, he might be the best cover corner that Bear Backers have seen. For those of you that are not sure of what I speak, a cover corner has to have the speed, agility, and awareness to go toe-to-toe with the best receivers without allowing receptions – especially the catches that turn into big plays.

Even though Cal doesn’t play a pure man-to-man defense, Thompson allows Coach Gregory the flexibility to leave him on an island in blitz situations. Thompson’s ability to cover his man helped the Bears to a sixth-ranked pass efficiency defense in 2008.

Normally, a player with the talent to cover in man situations isn’t as astute when playing in a zone. Thompson isn’t one of those guys. Some of his better plays on the season came while he was sitting in the zone and watching the quarterback’s eyes. Thompson was so good last year that teams avoided throwing to his side when they could. Thompson wasn’t perfect all season long, but there were times last season that he performed to perfection.

With such a glowing review, you’d think that I would rank him higher. I would have, but the Bears have so many secondary players who performed at a high level last season, I had to knock him down a few spots. Let me reiterate that there is nobody in the Pac-10 as good as Thompson, but there are some players on Cal’s football team that could get the job done if he were unavailable.

Sophomore pitcher/ utility player Valerie Arioto earned her second All-American honors of the 2009 season, being named to the Easton All-American second team.

Arioto was the second leading hitter on the team, posting a .325 average with a .425 on-base percentage. She was second in home runs with 10, tied for the lead with 37 RBI, led the team with 41 runs scored, and stole 15 straight stolen bases before being thrown out on her 16th attempt of the season. Arioto posted a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage, not making an error on defense in 244 chances. As a pitcher, she ended the year with a 14-9 record and a 2.40 ERA, capping her season with a complete-game four hitter against the top-rated Florida Gators at the Super Regional in Gainesville, Fla.

Arioto, a first team All-Pac-10 selection and a third team Louisville Slugger/NFCA All-American, earned an invitation to participate in the 2009 USA Softball National Team Selection Camp and will be vying for a spot on the US National Team in mid June.

The Easton All-American teams include a 15-player first team, 15-player second team, and a 15-player third team. The honors are determined by Easton Sports Inc. from the pool of players who use Easton equipment.

Regarding Bowls

I still don’t see how the Pac-10 doesn’t have a tie-in to any bowls in Arizona. I’m sure there are a lot of factors I don’t know about, but Arizona just seems like a logical destination.

A website that shall not be named and that I will not link to had a recent discussion about how to get back at Cal people putting down UCLA.

Berkeley people can only point to academics as an area in which they have an edge over UCLA and there isn’t some huge gap there if you go by the rankings. US News published two sets of ranking lists this past year for colleges. In the "National Rankings," Berkeley was 20 and UCLA was 25. However, in the "World Rankings," which use a different methodology, UCLA was 30 and Berkeley was 36.

As for everything else, what exactly does Cal do better? Location and campus – UCLA. Attractiveness of student body – UCLA. No Berkeley goggles needed in Westwood. If your buddy disagrees with this, then he must have had some good weed up north, or maybe he consumed a lot of alcohol during his college days.

Sports in general – UCLA by a mile. Look at how many championships each school has won. Three of the four California Pac 10 schools sit at the top of total team championships won. Which one is the odd man out? It’s Berkeley. But wait. They’re good in Rugby and they just became halfway decent in football. Meanwhile, Dorrell had a winning record against Tedford and they still have not been to a Rose Bowl in decades. That program had nowhere to go but up. They’re not suddenly great just because they have improved.

I guess for the extreme left wing types, UCLA might not be liberal enough, although I consider that a good thing.

Berkeley people seem to have this hatred for UCLA and it really doesn’t make sense. They’re sister schools. Maybe it has something to do with Stanford being such an elite institution in both athletics and academics. Berkeley students can’t say anything to their true rival so they pick on their better looking, more popular (we get the most applications in the nation), younger sibling. Unfortunately for them, that younger sibling is arguably their academic equal based on the rankings and that younger sibling beats them hands down in everything else. Their younger sibling is for the most part superior. On second thought, I do understand the hatred Berkeley people have for UCLA.

And if he tells you that UCLA stole Cal’s colors, song, and mascot, you can tell him that we improved upon them and made them famous. Cal uses ugly shades of blue and gold, an old looking, ugly mascot, and a bad version of "Sons of Westwood." They can either get over it or cry about it from now until the end of time. Friggin’ Hippies. Get a job. Vietnam is over.

Hey, we shouldn’t put down UCLA so much. They are one heck of a fallback school. That’s why they get so many apps. People are worried Cal State Fullerton would reject them, so they need a backup school.

I was about to go over and post a little, but then I saw their community agreement waiver and decided against it. an often neglected aspect is the fact that UCLA is in the greater LA area. I generally despise the stereotypical SoCal person. It’s the pompous attitude that is so prevalent down there. And I think more people should “keep it real” in regards to border security.

I’ve always found overall rankings to be kind of lame. The only purpose they serve is to use it in name-drop style (e.g., “so and so went to UCLA, therefore they must be brilliant”) when in reality it has little to do with the overall ranking. In my opinion, if a school passes the name drop test, the most important thing is the field you’re in. UC Davis is the best college around for an ag-related education. UCSF has a terrific department of medicine. UC Riverside has a lot of dust. UC Merced has 4 buildings now. See?

I was actually hoping for a UC Truckee…snowboarder U!

I accidentally ended up briefly visiting UC Riverside this past weekend. There was less dust than I had anticipated. Also, despite being in the middle of the desert with plenty of open space, the local shopping center makes you pay to use their parking. It’s ridiculous and I don’t plan on accidentally ending up at UCR or anywhere in Riverside County anytime soon.

I’m not overly anti-drugs but you shouldn’t wake up, roll over, snort coke, and head to class.

My friend started there perfectly normal, came back a drug addict/dealer. The school took his college trust fund, and kicked him out after a year. He alienated himself from all of his friends and family, and I have no idea where he is or what he is up to. I speculate he is still an addict.

Granted this isn’t all St. John’s fault, but from what I saw, it provided an atmosphere for this behavior to thrive.

Funny story

At a recent public event at the JC where I teach, the college President—himself a Cal alum—was introducing the outgoing student-body president. The college President proudly announced that the student was transferring to Berkeley, but then had to be corrected that the student wasn’t accepted up north and was going to UCLA instead. To which our college President responded somewhat sheepishly, “Oh, that’s a good school, too.” Can anyone say, “Awkward!”

UCLA is a great school, does have a better looking student population, a much worse college town (although +1 for Diddy Reese), In-N-Out burger, close proximity to the beach AND some crappy mountains (those crappy mountains are where I learned to snowboard).

I don’t really hate UCLA at all – its where I would’ve gone had I not gotten into Cal.

As for the better-looking student population, I think it has more to do with an attitude thing then an inherent attractiveness thing. Berkeley girls figure out very quickly that there is very little pressure to make themselves up and look good while going to class, so they mostly don’t bother. Wilner's Bowl Lineup

It seems mostly reasonable, though I have a couple quibbles:

- While gaining the Alamo Bowl might kick the Sun Bowl down to 4th, I can’t see them falling down below either the Emerald or Las Vegas Bowls anytime soon. What Wilner completely ignores is the fact that, mostly due to the Sun’s longtime TV contract with CBS, the Sun Bowl offers a payout approaching $2M, which neither the Emerald or Vegas Bowls can touch. While the location might not be the “destination” of SF or LV, teams do care about both money and network television airtime, which will keep the Sun relevant for quite some time.

- Anyone else think that, barring unusual circumstances (such as Utah in the Sugar last year, and TCU in the Poinsettia), matching the Mountain West No. 1 with the Pac-10 No. 5 (or even No. 6!) seems a bit lopsided?

So, basically, you gotta Go Bears!

because the Alamo would have the Big12#3/4 already (and it’ll likely be 4). We don’t need the 4/5 team in the Holiday bowl. The #1/2 Mtn West team sounds better to me and gives the Pac10 a chance at playing someone that finished higher in their respective conference. None of the other bowls have that, iirc.

the Pac-10 has played 8 times vrs. the Mountain West in the Las Vegas Bowl, pitting our 4/5 vrs their 1/2. Currently, the win-loss is 4-4. I don’t know if having the Pac-10’s #3 play their 1/2, would really improve the image of the Pac-10. We need more match-ups with east coast teams, but of course simply geography and demographics limits those options.

There’s a lot to be said for a crummy but reliable (and paid-for!) car. I recently looked up the Kelly Blue Book value of my car, and got back $475. I can believe it, but it’s so useful that, to me, it’s worth way more that.

Also, it’s so crummy that it’s its own theft-deterrent. A while back I (accidentally) left it unlocked in the garage at the Van Ness Theater in SF. I came back to find that the glove box had been rifled through, but nothing taken because there was nothing of value in there. They didn’t even bother to try and steal the car.

Leroy Smith was MJ’s high school teammate and best friend on that team. He was the kid who made the varsity high school team over Michael as a ninth grader. MJ was devastated and worked harder and harder on his game over the next year, grew four inches, turned into the ruthless finisher who could dunk and score at will. So one could say Leroy Smith inspired MJ to be the baller that he is today.

  1. The Warriors promised Monta Ellis that they wouldn’t draft a play-making guard. This was reported by more than one source.
  2. This rumor involving Jordan Hill makes sense when compared to the first one. He isn’t a play-making guard and he is probably the best player available at that point.
  3. We’re really high on Terrence Williams, so I believe that. By taking Hill, Brandan Wright becomes expendable.

Projected 2009-10 lineup:
PG — Monta Ellis
SG — Anthony Morrow
SF — Stephen Jackson
PF — Anthony Randolph
C — Andris Biedrins

Bench:
PG — Veteran free agent
SG — Terrence Williams
SF — Corey Maggette
PF — Jordan Hill
C — Ronny Turiaf

Others:
SG — Marco Belinelli
PF — Jermareo Davidson

P.S.: I really hope Jamal Crawford opts out.

It’s a really a toss-up between Wright and Hill as far as who’s going to have the better career. I think it’s Wright, though, but by a slim margin. I question his commitment to rebounding and playing defense.

Williams helps more than Wright if we draft Hill.

I like Maggette coming off the bench, but for $10 million a year over five years, it’s definitely a move that we’d like to redo if we could.

The one Warriors game I watched all year (I go to the game against the Pacers every year) he was awful. He was being booed. If he was involved in a possession that night, there was a higher than 50% chance there would be a turnover.

The Warriors philosophy: Let’s gather up a whole bunch of guys who could score at least 17 a game on a lottery team and see if that attitude makes us a winner. It doesn’t? We have to try harder than!

That said Stephen Jackson is my favorite NBA player.

I’m just speculating that Morrow would start alongside Ellis. Ellis is more than likely the point guard if we don’t draft one because I don’t think we’re going out to sign a point guard. Remember, we’re appeasing Ellis here by saying that he is the point guard. If we don’t draft a point guard, we won’t sign one because we’re making Ellis happy. If it wasn’t about Ellis, we would just go ahead and grab one of the many point guards in this draft.

There wasn’t enough room for him with the emergence of Monta Ellis. He took up the time in the backcourt with Baron Davis. This X 1,000,000. They almost got me back in when they knocked off the Mavs. It’s even worse now that they have legit talent but they don’t know what to do with it. Wasting Biedrins, playing Ellis out of position when you have your pick of point guards in the draft this year, letting Nellie coach a team going nowhere when you should be developing your young players…it goes on and on.

Rated-R, if you want to make a fanpost for the 2009 NBA Draft, I think it’d be a pretty popular topic of discussion. I’d do one myself, but I’d just be copying and pasting most of what you’ve written.

by Avinash Kunnath on Jun 16, 2009 4:44 PM PDT up reply actions

Can I do one on Wednesday night and just make it the open thread? What do you think?

The Ultimate Opportunist

by Rated-R Superstar on Jun 16, 2009 4:52 PM PDT up reply actions

I mean, you could just copy and paste your comments from above about the Warriors (plus your big draft board) and use those in a fanpost. But yeah, I think if you do it like an open thread like we did for the NBA Finals (a week of speculation followed by the actual thing), it’d be really popular.

by Avinash Kunnath on Jun 16, 2009 4:53 PM PDT up reply actions

But he has to have the Pacers picking Dejuan Blair. I am madly in love with Blair and would buy NBA league pass to watch him on a nightly basis.

I’ve seen plenty of undersized power forwards who dominated in college suck ass in the pros to get too excited. Mike Sweeney for example.

by LeonPowe on Jun 16, 2009 4:45 PM PDT up reply actions

It’s all about the Grizzlies and the second pick. The Timberwolves look like to be in the best position to do that since they have three picks in the first round. The problem is, the Grizzlies already two picks of their own in the first round. It wouldn’t surprise me, though, if the Grizzlies added more. They want to get rid of a bad contract or two and would take on more picks to do so. I guess when you’re the Grizzlies, you can’t have too much young talent. They can use it all.

It's probably

an undergrad Haas degree with a corporate finance emphasis (a bunch of courses like BA 131, 136F and 137)

Actually looking at the Haas undergrad catalog, I kind of wish I had been a Haas undergrad. So many of those courses would be so useful in my current life. Whereas stuff like Developmental Politics (139B) and 114A (Theories of Governance) – not so helpful now.

Aww crap, now that I’m looking at the course catalog, there’s a bunch of Poli Sci classes which would have been a lot more interesting to take – now that I know how a good portion of my post-grad life has turned out.

by LeonPowe on Jun 16, 2009 7:06 PM PDT up reply actions

Poli sci classes are useless for pretty much anything except being a poli sci academic.
