With that BIG series between the Giants of San Francity and the beloved Athletics of The Town coming up, I thought it'd be great to have an open thread to discuss these games. Tonight, we have Don Giusepppppppio Mazz-zzzaro versus some 13 year old kid nobody has ever heard of. I predict the Italian Stallion wins. Ooooooh, does that count as trash talk???

Learn more about Jahvid's interview with Chronicle Live:
SAN FRANCISCO - Cal Heisman Trophy candidate Jahvid Best appeared as a guest on the Chronicle Live television show Wednesday on Comcast SportsNet Bay Area. The show was broadcast live at 5:00 p.m., PT, and will air again on a tape-delayed basis Wednesday evening at 11:00 p.m., PT.
CalBears.com tagged along and captured a few behind the scenes pictures of his day at the Comcast SportsNet Bay Area studios.
The country's leading returning rusher is one of the nation's top candidates for the Heisman Trophy and a 2009 first team preseason All-American. His 1,580 rushing yards a year ago marked the second-best single-season ever at Cal, while his 8.1 yards per carry set a new school record. Best was a first team All-Pac-10 selection in 2008.
Cal has been ranked as high as No. 11 (Athlon) in national team preseason rankings released by college football preview publications. The Golden Bears open their 2009 campaign with a nationally-televised ESPN2 game against Maryland at Memorial Stadium on Saturday, September 5 (7:00 p.m., PT).
So, let's talk that trash and after the usual meanderings of the day use this thread as an open thread for the weekend's games. Go As!

Track continues on towards championships:
Riding his momentum from his regional championship, senior Martin Maric posted the top qualifying mark in the discus at the NCAA Championships on Thursday in Fayetteville, Ark.
Maric’s mark of 201-10 (61.53m) was a collegiate best for him and ranks fifth all-time in school history. The final of the discus will take place on Saturday at 10 a.m. PT.
Sophomore Michael Coe was the other Golden Bear to advance to the final in his event. In the prelims of the 1500, he clocked a personal-best time of 3:41.60 to place fifth.
Junior Yosef Ghebray and sophomore Alison Greggor both competed in the 10,000, but neither were able to finish the race. Senior Jordan Paul ended his season with a time of 14.63 in the 110-meter hurdles, placing 25th in the prelims.
The NCAA Championships continue tomorrow.

More Cal baseball players drafted:
BERKELEY, CALIF. – University of California junior catcher Dylan Tonneson was selected in the 36th round by the San Diego Padres and sophomore right-hander Yasser Clor was selected in the 49th round by the Pittsburgh Pirates during the third and final day of the 2009 Major League Amateur Draft. Tonneson and Clor make seven players drafted from the 2009 Golden Bear squad. Besides Tonneson and Clor, junior center fielder Brett Jackson was selected in the first round by the Chicago Cubs, junior second baseman Jeff Kobernus was a second round pick of the Washington Nationals, junior right-hander/designated hitter/outfielder Blake Smith was a second round pick of the Los Angeles Dodgers, junior left-hander Michael Bugary was a 15th round pick of the Boston Red Sox and senior third baseman/shortstop Michael Brady was a 24th round pick of the Florida Marlins. The seven players drafted in 2009 ties for the most Cal draftees since David Esquer became head coach in 2000.
Tonneson established himself as the Bears’ regular catcher last season and ended up being a key component in Cal’s 2008 NCAA regional run, batting .306 with 12 doubles, six home runs and 33 RBI. This season he hit .256 with six doubles, eight home runs and 18 RBI and was second in the Pac-10 in hit by pitch (14). Tonneson hit a home run in the final game of the season May 24 versus USC, and currently owns a .286 career average with 19 doubles, 14 home runs and 56 RBI in 115 games.

the baseball draft: it never ends.
I doubt those guys sign…but they might.
"We lose to Stanford in many sports, but if you want to make a Cal team quit, bring a weapon."
--Coach Clark
i think, at this point in the draft, these guys would really have to be looking to get out of school if they considered signing. as i noted in the article a few days ago, Clor was a 14th-round pick out of high school, so it’s gotta be disappointing to fall to the 49th round.
So, basically, you gotta Go Bears!
Dr. Saturday Weighs In
On paper, though, Cal should be at least a slight favorite in every game except USC, which makes it an odds-on contender for an at-large BCS bid. I don’t think I’m willing to pencil them into January yet, especially given the parity of the rest of the Pac-10 and the history here of losing to teams a notch below on the food chain. But I would peg the Bears to win at least at least eight games, up to 10, for the sixth time in seven years, which should be good for a top-20 finish. If that’s even a little disappointing, it’s also a testament to how far Jeff Tedford has brought this one-time jalopy.
Yeah, I think it’s a fairly accurate assessment; a little more realistic than some of ours have been.
I think he and I pretty much have the same opinion. Our record in 2009 will be largely determined by how much our passing improves – if at all. It might improve a lot and we could be a dangerous 10 win team or so. If it doesn’t improve very much or doesn’t improve at all, we could easily go 7-8 wins with defenses stacking the box.
www.californiagoldenblogs.com
do you think Riley can go from 44% completion rate to 60% or is that just too unrealistic?
"We lose to Stanford in many sports, but if you want to make a Cal team quit, bring a weapon."
--Coach Clark
I think it’s do-able. Riley didn’t attempt a ton of passes last year, so it’s not like he was 44% on 1000 passes. In other words, it was a smaller sample size than normal so an increase in % is more likely.
www.californiagoldenblogs.com
Just out of curiosity, I looked at the numbers…
In the 5 games where Riley had <20 attempts, he averaged 6.5 YPA and had a completion % of 51.7.
In the 5 games where he had >20 attempts, he averaged 5.3 YPA and had a completion % of 47.2.
I don’t think these numbers reveal anything of value, unfortunately.
by HolmoePhobe on Jun 12, 2009 10:58 AM PDT up reply actions
I’m not trying to bash Riley, but a completion percentage of 50% is approaching Kyle Boller Pre-Tedford kind of bad. All we need is for Riley to complete 60% of his passes, much like Longshore did in 2006, and with such a dangerous rushing attack, our offense will do fine.
www.californiagoldenblogs.com
To be fair to Riley, he was working with very green WRs last year though.

Which brings us to … [minor key — a woman screams] … the quarterback.

by Spazzy Mcgee on Jun 12, 2009 11:09 AM PDT up reply actions
It seems like some people are really starting to freak out about the fact that Tedford hasn’t had an NFL QB since Aaron Rodgers – or at least a more servicable QB since Rodgers. However, I would suggest that Longshore was that NFL guy.
Before Longshore’s injury he was doing fine. In 2006 he was fairly solid. In 2007, while he wasn’t jesus in cleats, he was doing great and his NFL stock was sky high.
Then he got injured and everything went down the tubes. It’s pretty clear that Longshore was never the same QB after his injury.
However, I dislike how people are starting to say that Tedford has lost his QB-touch or whatever or his magic touch because there hasn’t been a great QB since Rodgers. I think had Longshore not been injured in 2007, then he would have been Tedford’s next NFL QB. Maybe not a 1st round guy, but perhaps a 3rd or 4th round guy.
So I don’t think Tedford has lost his touch on grooming NFL QBs. I think Longshore would have been one if not injured (due to his ankle and pec injuries). So I think we should have faith that either Riley or Mansion or Sweeney will be an NFL talent.
I still trust in Tedford, and I think more people should too.
www.californiagoldenblogs.com
IMHO the Rodgers comparisons are dumb.
Rodgers was one of the best QBs in the NFL last year (6th in QB rating/4th in yards and TDs). It would be quite bizarre for 1 out of 180 college football programs to produce 2 quarterbacks of that caliber in 5 years. I realize that college success != NFL success, but you see my point.
by HolmoePhobe on Jun 12, 2009 11:23 AM PDT up reply actions 1 recs
Its been 4 years since Rodgers, but really Tedford has only gone through one quarterback (longshore). Riley is just a Junior, and Ayoob doesn’t really count.
Perhaps some Oregon people can confirm this, but I thought I remember Akili Smith and Joey Harrington sucking until they suddenly ‘got it’ then they became great college qb’s.
We all dream of being a child again, even the worst of us, the worst... perhaps... most of all.

Yes but...
How would the French military do against either the Giants or A’s?
Joe Starkey...Scholar, Humanitarian, Cal legend, worst radio play by play man of all time.
The Giants have won even less than the French. They might even lose that one over a protracted 20 year campaign!
The As and French might go to a stalemate. They’ll each take over half of the stadium and exchange potshots with one another in verbal jousts.

I wonder where the Giants and As rank among baseball franchises. Are they in the top 10? I know nothing about baseball.
by Avinash Kunnath on Jun 12, 2009 9:08 AM PDT up reply actions
Not sure what you mean by rank
But:
Yankees have 26 WS Titles
Cardinals have 10
A’s have 9 (5 of those from their Phillie days)
Red Sox 7
Dodgers 6 (2 from Brooklyn)
Reds and Pirates 5
Giants have 5 (ALL of those from their NY days)
The A’s have definitely had more success in the Bay Area as well, so as far as A’s v. Giants, there’s really no question of which has been a more successful franchise.

If it’s total mayhem, the Mongols win it running away. Well, more accurately on the people running away from them.
If it’s the scope and durability of the legacy, then I’d say Rome 1st and Britain second.

If you read my brilliant preview:
Everything you needed to know about the Confederations Cup but were afraid to ask
you’ll know this already. Watch Spain score 200 goals on New Zealand or see who will finish 2nd in group A when South Africa and Iraq face off. The US plays Italy Monday.
Also huge new for footy fans. US/German dual citizen Jermaine Jones has chosen to play for the US despite getting 3 caps with the German National Team. He arguable becomes the USA’s best player right away. A 27 yo midfielder with a nasty attitude, Jones may have just solved the USA’s midfield quandry for the 2010 World Cup.

Duke couldn't get Joanne Boyle...
But they got one of Cal’s best players in program history
Just saw this today. Former Cal women’s basketball player Trisha Stafford (a great scorer in her day) landed an assistant coaching gig for Duke. Trisha is apparently a recruiter extraordinnaire. I didn’t realize she was an assistant at Fucla when they got that highly touted recruiting class a couple of years ago.
Reading this made me think 2 things:
1. Wonder if Trisha would ever come back to her alma mater if there were an opportunity to join Boyle’s staff, and
2. Future CGB HOF material.

Well, Trisha would really have to improve her coaching skillz to a very high level, and then per recent practice she would come over to Cal from Duke if and when we choose that she do so.

As someone on BearInsider said:
“Humanity has reached a new low.”
It so happens that on May 8, 2004, the Oakland A’s had a Mother’s Day promotion. There was a fight-breast-cancer 5K run before the game, free mammograms and the first 7,500 women through the gate got floppy plaid sun hats from Macy’s. Nice day for the ladies.
Except that last part really hacked off a man named Alfred G. Rava. He was incensed that men weren’t getting a floppy plaid sun hat for Mother’s Day. He was so mad about it that he sued.
It gets worse. He has nearly won. A judge has given preliminary approval to a $510,000 settlement — roughly half to lawyers and the rest to the “victims” — the poor, downtrodden gender-disadvantaged waifs like Rava who didn’t get their floppy Mother’s Day hats.

Isn’t it good to know that most American males still have a spine? Save for (cough, cough) one.
Personally, I find Mr. Rava as odorous as a bag of dyspeptic hamsters.
We are not a collection of legal briefs, appellate rulings and city ordinances. We are people. We are grandfathers and sisters and uncles and girlfriends, all woven into the fabric of this wonderful thing called sports. He will prolly cherish and enjoy that floppy hat, knowing that it is a symbol of the fight he has won against the insidiously invidious discrimination against men. How dare the A’s promote breast cancer awareness (and Mother’s Day) by giving women free stuff at the game? That is the sort of discrimination that makes men feel like second class citizens at baseball games. Imagine the stigma that the thousands of men in the ballpark felt that day, knowing that they were denied floppy hats just because they were men. It prolly felt a lot like the way women felt in America when they did not have the right to vote.
If that guy had come to my office wanting to file that suit, I would have told him to go fuck himself.

Well, Travis Buck should definitely be back by then. I’m not sure about Sweeney, though. The way Davis is playing right now, he’s earned the time over Buck. Davis has been the only hot hitter as of late. Kennedy is having a bad June, Holliday’s batting average has dropped 17 points in the last five games and Cust’s batting average is the lowest it has been all year.

Tell me why they would rather have Kristic in the lineup then Thabo. Draft Thabeet, Thabo is a starter. Draft Harden, get Kristic. That is a great lineup but I don’t see why they need it. They get plenty of offense with Westbrook/Durant/Green. Get Thabeet who may be offensively limited but I guarantee he gets you at least 10 rebounds and 3 blocks.
In your mock draft, if they draft Rubio they can move Westbrook to 2, and then have the rest of the lineup as you put it before. Harden over Thabeet makes no sense at all. Harden over Rubio makes even less.

Seminar and taking and L is fine. I do Edwards if 580E traffic isnt bad, because it drops you right there. Also ,taking Hegenberg back to 580W to 13 is killer. Leave the BART parking lot the same way you came in (if you came in off of San Leandro) but take a left AWAY from San Leandro instead of right. Then, take a left to get onto Hegenberg. Just keep following that up into the hills and then follow the signs onto 580.

Hmmmm. Strangely compelling. I think I should just make a ton of different ones all having variations of 2 (deux, dos, II, the second, junior, two, too, tres menos uno, etc.)

I haven't seen that many tear-stained dollar bills since my dad hired a stripper for my uncle's funeral.
Hey guys
I’ll be out of the country and unable to access the internet for the next two weeks as visit my family so I won’t be a part of the Jahvid Best interview done by Yokanes. I’d appreciate it if someone could ask some of my questions that I posted on the fanpost (as well as the DJax CSU one!) and then post the link to replay of the live chat on that fanpost (or email it to me).
thanks!
In other words, Go Bears!
We'll be doing something cool for that
Don’t worry about it, we’ll take care of it. Enjoy the mosquitoes!

How is Monopoly not the greatest game ever?

Fun fact: Monopoly was originally invented by socialists as a way to teach kids about the evils of capitalism.
So, basically, you gotta Go Bears!
One of my friend’s would always agree to play, then he’d do a bunch of lopsided deals to the other people who were playing (effectively killing himself) to ensure I didn’t win. His goal was never to win, rather to try and convince them I was evil incarnate.
It took the fun out of the game.
We all dream of being a child again, even the worst of us, the worst... perhaps... most of all.
That’s a shame.

Exactly his point. He also described how he was going to kill me but it is FAR too graphic to put here.

Either you really believe that, or you just want to hear stories of me dying.
And yeah I really don’t want to repeat it. He was kidding though, I think. I was playing with him and another one of my friends and I won. This was not normal winning. This was an epic Sorry massacre. When I won, he had all of his pieces stuck in start, and my other friend had only one piece out of start. It was that amazing.

Now, I certainly don’t recall anyone looking anything like her in any of my EECS classes…

and Audrey Tautou was a money-grubbing whore in the movie priceless

You never see the…. er….. wait.

I love how “hacking” in movies, even today, consists of mashing a keyboard while random colorful boxes pop up on the screen.
