DBD 5.27.09 That's Like 50 Items! That's WAY Over!

I wasnt planning on writing the DBD, but then most hilariously painful thing happened at Safeway today.  Ok, first, I had gone to Whole Foods to get a brownie (the worlds greatest sweet) and had it waiting for me in the car.  But I had to snag a few things from Safeway, too.  So, I run in figuring itll be quick.  I grab my items and head to the register.  Theres only 3 registers open and the lines are ALL long.  Im like "Fuck" and just get into the 15 items only line.

Im like "Man do I hope I picked right!"  Of course, because YHWH hates me, I did not.  First, some family pays with what appears to be lottery tickets?  Something?  I dont know.  Food stamps.  It did NOT look like legal tender.  Like IOUs.  And it took the Safeway guys FOREVER to process whatever they were.

While this is happening, I sense an impending crisis.  The women like 2 in front of me has her cart full.  To the brim.  Just epically packed.  I was incredulous.  "No, can she?  Is she?  Is there no decency left in the world anymore?  Have the terrorists truly won?"

Yes, yes, the terrorists have truly won.  Because this woman unloads like 5 million items on to the belt.  I'm in fucking disbelief.  But you know me, Im so passive aggressive.  The only thing I'd ever do is get on my phone and loudly tell my wife about how "some woman had like 5,000 items on the belt and I'd be home late for putting little baby Jimmy to bed."

I, however, was not the only person upset by this turn of events.  And others don't match their aggressiveness with such passiveness.  People behind me start fucking heckling her.  HECKLING!

"Hey, woah, that's WAY more than 15 items.  You only supposed to have like 15 items!"

"That's HELLA shit!"

"How many items is that?  45?  50?  I mean c'mon!  Can you read the sign?"

She mumbles something which I didnt catch and just keeps going on.  No shame.  NO SHAME!  50 ITEMS!  THATS 35 ITEMS OVER THE LIMIT!  WHAT IS THIS WORLD COMING TO?!?!

I was buying one of those big packages of water bottles, like 25 water bottles.  I wanted to ask if I had to count each of those water bottles individually or something like that.  But man, that was an odd encounter.  Usually the only heckling I experience is during my stand up routines.  Not at Safeway trying to buy eggs, water bottles, and trail mix.  All with a delicious brownie waiting for me in my car!!!!

Mens gymnastics coach Barry Weiner (MUST...CONTROL...SARCASM) wins coaching award:

BERKELEY - California men's gymnastics head coach Barry Weiner was given with the 2009 Honor Coach award by the College Gymnastics Association. Recognized as the most prestigious coaching award in collegiate gymnastics, Weiner earned this year's accolade along with Mike Burns of Minnesota. The pair was honored at the 2009 NCAA Championships.

Weiner, who just completed his 18th year at the helm of the Golden Bears, is the fourth Cal coach in program history to be recognized. Charles A. Pease (1970), Charles Keeney (1974) and Harold Frey (1976) are the other three coaches. After leading the Golden Bears to a 17-8 overall record this season, Weiner now boasts a career record of 238-89-1 at Cal.

Weiner led the Bears to two team national championships in 1997 and 1998. He owns a total of 10 top-5 national finishes in the last 14 years, including this year's fourth-place finish at the NCAA Championships. He has also coached 14 NCAA individual champions. The most recent individual championship was this season, when Evan Roth won the title on still rings. Weiner coached current graduate intern Tim McNeill to five individual national championships - three NCAA titles on pommel horse and two on parallel bars.

Updates in the life of Rishi

Just in case anyone was wondering why I don’t post here NEARLY as often as I do, it’s not (just) because Twist decided that acting like a jerk to me would be funny.

Rather, I changed jobs. Now, I’m starting a new job at another firm… the downside (upside for you guys) is that I have people watching me constantly. Which means no CGB (or almost none) at work.

And long hours means very few posts after work.

In essence, it was nice being part of the CGB community. Enjoy while I fade into the background.

From Jon Wilner’s blog

Dave Libbey is out as the best-known and most controversial referee in the Pac-10 … and in as the WCC coordinator/czar of men’s basketball officials.

And yes, it’s fairly easy to see him as a czar, given the way his whistle ruled the basketball court.

College football votes to be secret in 2010.

The final regular-season ballots in the USA TODAY Coaches’ Poll will no longer be made public beginning with the 2010 football season, according to a person with knowledge of the information who didn’t want to be identified because he wasn’t authorized to comment before an announcement today from the American Football Coaches Association.

The AFCA has released the final ballots since 2005.

The poll is one of three components of the formula used to determine the teams for the Bowl Championship Series title game. The change is among the results of a three-month review of the poll by Gallup at AFCA’s request.

Twist, I've got some advice for you

Don’t do your own investing. You don’t want people being their own attorneys, because non-attorneys don’t know what they’re doing, even if they’re really smart. Leave the investment stuff to professionals. Hire someone competent, and that way you don’t have to seek investment knowledge on a sports blog.

Driver of the Cal Um Bus

by CALumbus Bear on May 27, 2009 10:00 AM PDT up reply actions

Seconded, for the most part. If you are going to invest by yourself, keep it simple. Stick with index funds that have low expense ratios. Don’t look too hard for individual stocks, don’t buy options, don’t short anything. Unless you really know what you’re doing, you just want to keep it simple and keep your expenses down.

No feelings hurt, and now that you’ve become serious I am once again enamored with you.

People shouldn’t be their own doctors, attorneys, or brokers. Leave it to the pros.

Driver of the Cal Um Bus

by CALumbus Bear on May 27, 2009 10:16 AM PDT up reply actions

Respectfully I disagree.

I prefer to be my own broker. Doctors, lawyers and brokers serve our needs as specialists. I don’t delegate my health to my doctor; I’m in the gym and on the bike regularly; I see a doctor when I need to. I don’t have my lawyer riding shotgun over every deal or contract I make; I manage my own risk; I avoid using a lawyer unless absolutely necessary. And I don’t let a broker tell me what the market is doing or what a reasonably strategy is. I read the business pages and the financial sites.

Ultimately I’m responsible for the results so I manage my affairs. I also keep things simple so I can understand them. Of course, that’s not the only way but it works for me.

Do you understand it? I don’t so I wouldn’t use it.

I wouldn’t play a triangle offense in a pickup game just because it works for Phil Jackson. But I’d back your punk ass down on the baseline.

Any investment strategy you use you had better understand otherwise it isn’t investing. It’s gambling. My approach to investing is pretty conservative (for a liberal). Broad base ETFs reduce my upside and my risk. I’d rather get the high order bits right.

Stanfurd Delendum Est.

by Olsonist on May 27, 2009 10:50 AM PDT up reply actions

I understad the concept of shorting something. You are anticipating that it will decrease in value. So, you are essentilly selling now and buying later. I also understand, vaguely, that bonds are about to decrease in value for some various reasons.

However, Im not necessarily sure I understand the ins and outs of what a broad base etf is (being honest). Things like that.

Most people disagree with me, I admit that. Everyone does their own self-medicating, and all too often people avoid using lawyers unless absolutely necessary (often meaning they’d rather spend HUGE dollars on litigation/dispute resolution than small dollars on prevention). So if you dabble in the market, go ahead. But to bet your retirement/life savings on your self-taught investment skills is, IMHO, short-sighted and foolish if you can afford better. Sort of like not buying insurance — “hey, I’ve never needed it, and insurance companies shaft people all the time so why bother?”

Shorting any asset, whether stocks, bonds or anything else, when you don’t already own the underlying asset is called an uncovered short and is one of the riskiest investment strategies around. The story is quite different if you own the asset, but it doesn’t sound like you do.

If you are risk averse, it is probably not the strategy for you. Or if you want to try it out, you should set a limit on the loss you can accept and be prepared to unwind your short position quickly (buy the asset you already sold) when you hit that threshold if prices start heading up.

Of course, that will inevitably happen just before the market crashes and you would have made a ton if you had balls of Tedford.

It also looks as though there are not enough parking spaces for the size of that place. I don’t see the logic in burning 30 min of gas waiting for a parking spot to go shop green….

Well, hopefully 200+ will be enough. Although when you think about how extremely highway-adjacent it is, and how many more people that’ll attract… hmmm.

Well, I see it as less of a going there to shop green than going there to take advantage of their ridiculous produce selection.

It'll be just you, me, and Peter Nincompoop.

by BeastMode on May 27, 2009 2:22 PM PDT up reply actions

That’s definitely how I see it. It’s not about “shopping green” or anything like that. I mean I usually shop at Safeway just ‘cause it’s closer, but their produce sucks. I’m told that Berkeley Bowl has amazing produce, but going all the way up to Berkeley Bowl and fighting the traffic and all that just never appealed to me, so I never went there.

Now that there’s one near me, I intend to grab the yummy yummy produce. If I can find it through the thick cloud of smug, that is.

It’s a decent show. The more recent episodes aren’t as enjoyable because Kate became really snappy and they’re now dealing with some issues due to their rising fame (tabloid allegations, paparazzi). But for the most part it’s an enjoyable show because all the family members (except Kate at times) are so lovable.

I expected them to be much better than 4-8 in 2008. I think several times they were just a couple plays away from being a good team. That’s why I’m excited about this year, its going to be a tough challenge for us.

Not nervous because I think its easier for our players to get pumped up for a game if they are playing a better team, as opposed to letting their guard down.

The Pepper Tree Inn isn’t bad, its more of an economy pick because its away from the action. If you want to stay out in Goleta, you can find a cheaper rate than in downtown. Some decent economy picks are the Ramada and the Holiday Inn.

Presidio Motel

http://www.thepresidiomotel.com/

I stayed there a few months back. It’s basically an old motel that someone took over, mildly renovated (new carpet, furnishings by Ikea), and let some art students decorate. Our room had a huge mobile hanging over the bed. Cute, in an art school kind of way. I’d have been happier with the room had they gone a little further with the renovation. Some more plush carpeting and a non-squeaky bed frame would go a long way. But for the price (~ $125/night IIRC) and the location (on State St, a couple blocks away from the action) it’s hard to beat. They had a few beach cruisers on hand you could take out, too.

We didn’t make it out of the downtown area for a winery tour like we’d hoped, but we were able to bike down to the Telegraph Brewing Co. They make a great Porter, which I’d enjoyed the night before at The Hungry Cat, a great place if you have a taste for fresh seafood/oysters and money to burn. The brewery hadn’t yet opened when we arrived, so we did a wine tasting next door at Carr Winery. It was both expensive (I thought wine tastings were free?) and underwhelming. Skip it. Santa Barbara Winery up the street was much better, although I may have enjoyed it more because I was “warmed up” by then.

Anyway, the Presidio Motel. I recommend it—if you’re planning on hanging out downtown, anyway. I almost forgot, the owners had put together this binder with recommendations on local restaurants. Definitely a step up vs. the typically bland, commercialized restaurant guide you’ll find in a chain hotel.

...and I put that on Delisa Lynch...

Article on why Roper left Oregon

Roper explains decision to transfer

Roper, ideally, wants to move back nearer his family in Georgia, but much of that depends on where a scholarship offer comes from. With either one or two years of eligibility remaining – depending on whether he stays or moves down a level – he’s not in position to be picky.

More interestingly….

“I’d like to be a worship director at a church,‘’ Roper said. "That’s something I really have a passion for.’’

Churches have worship directors? Like “worship THIS WAY no … no… THIS way no … ur doin it wrong!. ohhhh wtf I quit.”

WR Markish Jones 2 years of eligibility or 3 years?

When I was checking the roster, it said that he’s a junior. But I thought he transfered from a JC after using only 1 year of eligibility? Or am I confusing him with another transfer?

In all the analysis of the depth chart, nobody mentioned his name, and I’m guessing that’s because he hasn’t been in camp yet and thus nobody has been able to really evaluate him against the current depth. Does anyone have an idea of how he’ll contribute?

From Bearswithfangs:

While Jones has probably flown under the radar a bit, this is a big time get for the Bears who were looking for a big time WR recruit. Jones was ranked the 28th best receiver in 07, receiving offers from a number of SEC schools including LSU and Tennessee.

Jones also reports good size at 6’0, 183 lbs, and runs a 4.4 forty, which would make him one of the fastest wide receivers on the team. Jones will have three years to play two seasons with the Bears. If the commitment holds, the Bears will have essentially gotten a 4-star WR who has had the chance to polish his skills at the JC level.

The Broncos today released running back J.J. Arrington after Arrington failed his physical.

Arrington, who signed with the team as a free agent from Arizona in March, had knee surgery after the Super Bowl and had been unable to participate so far in the Broncos’ organized team activities.

Arrington was one of three free-agent tailbacks signed by the Broncos, and the team also drafted running back Knowshon Moreno with its top pick in the draft.

Champion's League Final

What a performance by the Catalans! Eto’o’s early goal was amazing – the cut he made to the inside of the box reminded me of Jahvid in the open field. And the cross to Messi was as perfect as a cross could be. A completely deserved victory.

Man U just looked lost for the last 80 minutes of the game. Ronaldo seemed frustrated and Puyol got into his head. I wish Berbatov was back on Spurs. He’s such an amazing, unique player, but his style doesn’t fit with Manchester in the least, so he wastes away on the bench and comes in when it’s too late to make a difference. I doubt he’ll be at Old Trafford next year.

Also, kudos to the ref, who controlled the game but never intruded upon it. It’s nice to have a major match with absolutely no controversial decisions. Plus he gave a card to that pouty bastard Ronaldo. Rooney needs to stomp on his testicles instead of Carvalho’s the next time England and Portugal play.
