Great pick up, although not a huge surprise. Lets see if Cal can pick up some WR/TE talent so he has someone to catch his passes.

This looks like a great pick-up for down the road. He is also a very good student.

One thing I can’t understand is how this guy could be rated as the number 2 QB by Rivals but only 28 by Scout. That is a huge difference!

Scouting report from Bear Insider:

Hinder has loads of upside to develop into an outstanding college player. He is tall, athletic and has yet to grow into his lean frame, but he is creative, versatile and is capable of making all the throws. He could play in the spread or any pro-style scheme that would allow his athleticism to supplement his arm. He reminds us at this stage of Garrett Gilbert only not quite as developed yet. Very similar tools and moxie. Hinder has a knack for making plays and not only playing within the scheme, but being able to improvise and crate something positive when things break down. Has quick feet, gets set quickly and is agile enough to avoid pressure on a consistent basis. Buys a lot of second-chance passing opportunities. He can throw on the run with good velocity and accuracy. Has a quick release and above-average arm strength. Is not going to “wow” you with velocity and power in his arm, but when on time and with his feet set he can fit the ball into tight spost and make all the throws you want. Delivery is over-the-top and can be a bit long, but he gets rid of the ball in a hurry and is consistent in his overall mechanics. Has yet to grow into his lanky frame and will be a guy that could add 15 pounds easily and really aid in durability. The level of competition he is facing is below average and he clearly is the best player on the field the majority of the time. Is the grandson of legendary NFL offensive line coach Jim Hanafin and you can tell he understands the game and works to go through progressions and see things happening. This is a player that has a huge ceiling for development as well as growth potential. He will be a late bloomer that will really benefit from being groomed and taking part in a college weight program. Overall, Hinder has all the tools and the lineage you love to see in quarterbacks and he has yet to tap into what he could be with one-on-one tutelage at the next level. He’s an exciting prospect to track as a senior.

Hibernating until next season (mostly).

This is all I need to know
Hinder — listed as the second-ranked quarterback and No. 84 prospect overall by www.rivals.com — also said Cal coach Jeff Tedford played a big role in him committing.

Prior to his junior season, Tedford watched Hinder throw and became the first coach to offer him a scholarship.

If Teford saw him throw as a Sophomore and offered him early I have no doubt he has the skills to be a great QB.

Found this video.

Surprisingly good runner, he’s got some nice moves. Looks like his HS team runs the read option, so he is mostly operating out of the shotgun and then either runs it himself or passes on the move. Very mobile in the pocket and seems to be able to hit receivers in stride while rolling out. Nice touch on deep ball too.

Hibernating until next season (mostly).

OH HELLS YEA BIATCHES!!!

Fucking hell yes!

Guess Heaps and Nottingham are out then?

We need Cassius to re-commit and get some talented WRs and steal one of Harbitch’s TE recruits.

In other words, Go Bears!

RB, DE, WR, TE, OL, CB

Anthony Barr high on my wish list…
Hope Gabe King commits and Marsh recommits
Hinder said he’ll try to get Robert Woods (WR) to come to Cal.
For some reason, we never really get high TE prospects. Spencer Ladner was a surprise but hasn’t emerged yet.
We do relatively well on the OL.
Somewhat worried about the CB position… 3 offers, 1 to Texas, 1 probable to USC, another unrrated.

Go Bears!

Barr looks awesome – not a typical Cal TB but who cares.

Tosh has come close to landing some really big fish on the DL, so hopefully this is the year he gets one.

Woods would be tremendous, but will SC convince him to play CB? Does Hinder have some connection with him?

Would also love to get Zwinak as our next great FB and another stud LB.

Not so worried about CB since we seem to be stocked with young talent already (Anthony, Hill, etc.)

Hibernating until next season (mostly).

Hinder's fallen in love with Wood's highlight reel.

But no real connection there.
Not really concerned at the CB… for now. But ideally, I would like to have a similar type of recruiting for CBs as we do for QBs: at least 1 really good one every year. Just my own personal preference. I understand it’s not necessarily as big of an impact position as QB, but they do have more flexibility to rotate, and I think having a good core of CBs to rely on helps me sleep better at night =)
Syd’Quan Thompson
Darian Hagan
Marc Anthony / Josh Hill
Steve Williams
+1 next year would be awesome.

(It looks like Conte will be moving to Safety… looks like a prudent move, I think he’d be a better fit there.)

I agree about the FB and LB positions.

Since it seems like this year is stacked with quarterbacks, will tedford break his one per year quota? Also, none of this feels right without t-bred. Come back to us t-bred! We need you!

Actually this seems to be a down year for QB’s, next year is supposed to be better. I think the difference is this year saw some top guys (Heaps, HInder) considering Cal. It helps that USC is set with Barkley that they aren’t looking too hard this year.

by turkey on May 25, 2009 3:50 PM PDT up reply actions

I like the 1 per year rule. I’ve never felt like Cal has too few QBs. If anything, it’s felt like we have more talent than can get on the field. Obviously we need that to account for depth and injuries and what not, but I’m content with the 1 per year rule.

I agree

One redshirting, three eligible to play. Only problem is if/when a QB declares early one year, in which case the depth would be a little thin.

by Nashville on May 25, 2009 4:03 PM PDT up reply actions

Not necessarily. 2010 we will have 4 active QBs, with Hinder redshirting.

Hinder on Cal: (from ESPN)

“Cal is always a top 25 school,” Hinder added. “You have a chance to win a national championship while getting a great degree. Plus you get to play (University of Southern California). It’s 100 percent. I’m definitely going to Cal. I’m done. I’m going to Cal.”

That’s the spirit!

Interesting how Elite 11 has become a brand-name. This article refers to the Elite 11 camp as being in Berkeley, but really this was the regional competition (of which there are apparently 7 total) and had 60 players (rather than the 11 players you would expect.) So, Hinder isn’t an Elite 11 QB yet.

by Tedfordisgod on Jun 2, 2009 5:44 PM PDT reply actions

So he’s an Elite 420…not such a big difference….
