DBD 5.20.09 Yu Darvish? I barely know her
(Note: I wrote this like 2 months ago but am now just getting around to posting it)
Ok, I know, I know, that's not the right context for an "I barely know her" joke. But I just like them, so much I had to go with it. The other option was something that "No, I Don't Darvish, Why Do You Ask?" which probably would have been just as funny as the afore-mention incorrect joke, but painfully sincere.
But Yu Darvish is a topic that few Americans dare speak its name. I watched him in the WBC the other day and he is GOOOOOOOOOOOOD.
Yu Darvish, seen here modeling in the International Male magazine is a Japanese baseball player.
Half Japanese and Half Iranian, Yu has been in hot demand as a pitcher since high school:
He was extensively scouted since his days in Junior High School by the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim and Atlanta Braves who later tried to sign him. The New York Mets also were in competition for his services. The Hokkaido Nippon Ham Fighters, Hiroshima Toyo Carp, Chunichi Dragons, Fukuoka Daiei Hawks and Orix Blue Wave were also in the battle to sign Darvish.[6]
The Hokkaido Nippon Ham Fighters won the first pick of the 2004 draft and proceeded to draft and sign. During that year Darvish occupied a large part of the sports news in Japan.
There's no joke here, just excitement over getting a chance to watch him pitch. I had heard of him before now, but never really had a chance. He has a great fastball, mid 90s. His breaking ball is high 70s, low 80s and has a lot of bite. And he seemed to have pinpoint control.
I have no idea if he's ever going to come to Umrica, but I find it likely. Dollar dollar bill y'all.
Womens tennis gets 2nd place in the nation!!!!
The No. 9-ranked (eighth-seeded) California women's tennis team (22-5, 7-1 Pac-10) fell in a 4-0 defeat to No. 3 Duke (29-3, 11-1 ACC) in the 2009 NCAA Division I Women's Tennis Championship final Tuesday (May 19) at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center. The Golden Bears complete their season as the national runner-up for the second consecutive year and will now turn their attention to the NCAA singles and doubles championships beginning Wednesday (May 20) with first round singles matches.
Cal knew it had a long road ahead of it as Duke seized the doubles point to open the match. Facing a 5-4 deficit at court three, senior Bojana Bobusic and freshman Stephany Chang were locked in their sixth deuce point with Ellah Nze and Reka Zsilinszka, but a couple of strong plays by the Blue Devil duo swung momentum Duke's way. The Devils eventually put the match away with an 8-4 win. At the top court, the No. 7-ranked tandem of sophomore Mari Andersson and freshman Jana Juricova had earned match point, up 7-5, but were unable to finish as the Devils completed an 8-5 win at No. 2 doubles. Andersson and Juricova were named to the all-tournament team for their performance at the top court throughout the championships.
Fighting to even the match at five-all, No. 35 sophomore Marina Cossou and senior Claire Ilcinkas hit a setback as Ilcinkas pulled up with a calf injury. After a short timeout, Ilcinkas returned to the court but the Bear duo fell back, 6-4. Even hobbled by the injury, the Bears took one more game off the No. 53-ranked team of Mallory Cecil and Jessi Robinson, but it was not enough as Duke came away with the 8-5 win and the doubles point.
The opinions expressed in a FanPost are, in every way, reflective of the opinions of every California Golden Blogs Marshawnthusiast. Moreover, they are reflective of every employee of SBNation, including Tyler "Blez" Bleszinski.

The California Golden Bears, playing in the post season for the 24th consecutive year, advanced to the NCAA Super Regional for the fourth time since the format was adopted five years ago. The Bears swept the Tallahassee Regional, with an 8-3 victory over Mississippi State and 2-0 and 2-1 victories over Oklahoma State. It is the 10th time in the last 11 years the Bears have won their Regional to advance in the post season. The Bears will be taking on the top overall seed, the Florida Gators. This is the second consecutive year the Bears’ road to a possible 11th College World Series appearance has gone through Gainesville. Last year, the Bears were swept by the Gators on their home field, falling 4-2 in both games.
This will be the third time that the Bears and Gators have faced one another in the post-season. In 2000, Cal won a pair of games against Florida, 2-0 and 2-1, at the Fresno Regional. The Bears went on to defeat Fresno State in the Regional Final and advanced to the CWS.

Womens Crew going to NCAA Championsihps:
BERKELEY – California was one of 16 teams named to the 2009 NCAA Division I Women’s Rowing Championships on Tuesday by the NCAA office. The national regatta, hosted by Villanova, is scheduled to take place May 29-30 at Cooper River Park in Cherry Hill, N.J. The Golden Bears hosted the NCAA Divisions I, II and III Women’s Rowing Championships last year, when they finished third overall and fourth in the varsity 8+ grand final at Lake Natoma in Gold River, Calif.
“We were pretty confident we’d be selected, but it’s good to get the confirmation,” Cal head coach Dave O’Neill said. “It looks to be a really strong field, and our team is right in the thick of things. It should be a great regatta.”
The Bears are coming off a Pac-10 team championship on May 17 in Gold River, where Cal’s second varsity 8+ and varsity 4+ boats also won conference crowns. Cal’s varsity 8+, currently ranked No. 2 in the latest USRowing/Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association poll, and the Bears’ novice 8+ each finished second at the conference regatta.
Cal has won the NCAA team title twice – in 2005 and 2006 – in the 12-year history of the event.
The other Pac-10 teams in the 2009 NCAA field are Washington, Stanford, Oregon State and USC. The rest of the field consists of Brown, Clemson, Dartmouth, Harvard, Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State, Princeton, Virginia, Wisconsin and Yale.

Most beautiful hapas
Kristin Kreuk, Jessica Alba, Kelly Hu (one of the original hapa beauties), Tera Patrick, Barbara Mori, Nicole Scherzinger, Beyonce, and of course Megan Fox. That girl in Star Trek (Zoe Saldana?) is pretty cool too.
I’m sure I’m missing others. Perhaps carp can fill me in. Note: I’m surprised, disturbed, and slightly aroused at how many hapas end up in the porn industry.

Uhh...
Do you have your own definition of hapa? Hapa doesn’t mean anyone of mixed ethnicity.
I think Holmoe is right (wow, back when Holmoe was coaching I never thought I’d say that).
Another one to add to the list, Aya Sumika, the girl from Numbers. If only she fixed her nose, but with or without the crooked nose she’s hot:

Henceforth is an adverb, one of a few adverbs which don’t end with an ly suffix. Since it is part of an introductory adverbial phrase and even though it is also in a compound sentence, it needs to have a comma.

Based on the post-spring depth chart, it would seem like the positions where we don’t have many current freshmen (‘12) and sophomores (’11) backfilling spots are:
OLB
CB
PR, KR
TE
So in 2012, 2013 we might need some maturity in those positions. Even though the 2009 recruiting class brought in some JC transfers at the OLB spot, those guys will be gone by 2011. The CB spot has some new guys coming in, like Steve Williams and Vachel Samuels. And in 2008 we brought in Marc Anthony, who is going to be good someday.
I guess that just leaves LBs….TEs…..as the biggest needs for the recruiting class of 2010.

Quick question
What are the rules regarding posting a news article on CGB? Can one post the whole article if it is attributed/linked?
Please Don't Post The Whole Thing
Fair Use allows a quotation of ‘reasonable length’ and a link, but copying the whole article could put us at risk for a Cease and Desist letter. The rules are even more restrictive if the article in question is behind a paysite firewall.
Don’t ask me to define ‘reasonable length’. Use your judgment.
So, basically, you gotta Go Bears!

No Problem
I’m sure you’re not the only person with questions regarding this; I should probably post this answer in a more prominent place.
So, basically, you gotta Go Bears!
Well, here’s what I wrote in our FAQ:
I found a great article about Cal on another website. Can I post it here so that everyone else can see?
Many websites (such as for news organizations, like the SF Chronicle) will allow their stories to be passed around the web without too much restriction. Find a gem of a quote? Feel free to copy and paste the relevant passage into a comment, a FanShot, or even your own FanPost, along with a link back to the original story. Due to fair-use restrictions, you can’t copy the whole thing, but you can copy a few paragraphs, and by providing a link back to the original story, readers can go and get the whole story, straight from the source. We at the CGB would appreciate the same courtesy when linking to our posts.
However, some websites restrict some or all of their content to paying subscribers. There are no fair-use allowances for such “premium” content as can be found at sites such as Rivals, Scout, or ESPN Insider. They work hard to produce such content, and don’t want to see it just given away for free. For something behind a subscription wall, merely offer the link and perhaps a paraphrase. Do not copy and paste anything from behind a subscription wall, because it is not only against copyright law but, most likely, in violation of your subscription agreement as well. We could get in trouble, you could be banned from that subscription site — bad times all around. Just don’t do it.
So, basically, you gotta Go Bears!
49ers to move to Santa Clara?
Santa Clara officials late Tuesday signed off, in a closed session, on the parameters of a deal with the San Francisco 49ers to build a 68,500-seat stadium in the South Bay, city officials said.
Santa Clara residents will go to the ballot box to decide whether to back the deal their city leaders hashed out with the team. That vote will likely come in March, after an environmental-impact study is completed.
Mayor Patricia Mahan has said the proposal calls for Santa Clara to contribute less than $90 million toward the $854 million stadium, money that will come from redevelopment funds and a tax on hotel customers.

Chowder's stirred up a firestorm over at Burnt Orange Nation
They’re just pissed because the California State Legislature pretty much guaranteed that CAL will never have an elite football program. California has strict limits on how much public employees are to be paid. As a result no Public College in California can afford no hire an Elite Football coach.
As a result they’re stuck on that one year where they almost made it. For some reason they’ve turned that disappointment into anger at Texas. I agree they should focus on beating USC first…
Ready to scrap?
I thought you Berkely boys were pacifists…light up a fatty and go have a sit-in at Jeff Tedford’s office. It’ll make you feel better.
Cal is like a lawn chair

People complained about it which is fine. Hating Bob Stoops and Oklahoma for lobbying to get in the game would no be ridiculous. We do hate Stoops and Oklahoma for other reasons though ;).
Frankly, nobody here gives a shit whether the fans of a third rate program like CAL respects us. I think being a contender for the National Championship every single year and 3 BCS Bowl Game wins warrants respect, but y’all have a right to your own opinions, even if the qualifier for respect is preposterous.
A smart coach will make a OOC schedule that gives them the best chance of achieving their end season goals. Because the Big 12 has national respect as one of the top two conferences, we do not need a as strong OOC schedule, unlike say the PAC 10 which is generally seen as being on the weaker side, where a big OOC game is necessary in order to get into the top games.

Sorry about that, Rags
I write “CAL” all the time. I started doing it years ago because I didn’t like seeing an abbreviated “Cal” alongside the acronym “UCLA.” I know it’s just an acronym, blah blah blah, but I started capitalizing “CAL” as an homage to the flagship. It just sort of stuck in my usage.

For some reason they’ve turned that disappointment into anger at Texas.
They don’t give a rat’s ass about us and don’t respect us as a program. Fine, I get that, and if I was a Texas fan, I’d probably feel the same way about programs like ours (in addition to being an arrogant asshole with a sense of college football entitlement). But come on – the reason for the anger on this side is pretty freaking obvious. If their premise is correct, i.e., that we’re not an “elite” program like Texas that competes year in and year out for NCs and BCS bowl appearances, then it shouldn’t be particularly tough to understand why we’d still be mad. Our chances have been few and far between, so when a truly tangible opportunity is taken from us by Texas chicacery, why the hell wouldn’t we be mad at Texas?

Great fanpost at AN by the way. I don’t often read the comments (so cluttered) there but I did after I think the Giogate against Seattle. I started packing away canned foods because what I could draw from the comments was that the apocalypse was coming. I doubt I will read comments ever again on that site. Everyone needed to chill the fuck out. Honestly, what were we expecting from this team? Just because we traded for Holliday does not mean we would automatically be winning every game.
And we really did not give up that much for him. We gave up a pitcher who would be out of the rotation in 2-3 years. We gave up a closer who was an enigma. Yes we gave up probably our most talented young player (who I had a massive mancrush on and considered buying a hundred dollar jersey of. Glad my parents vetoed that one), but we got one of the top 5 hitters in the game and arguably the second best (Pujols is in a league of his own. Seriously. His stats make you drool. per 162 games: 124 R, 200 H, 44 2b, 42 HR, 129 RBI, 91BB-66K (!!!!!!!!), .334 avg, .425 OBP, 1.050 OPS. This is going to be a ridiculous tangent but dear lord look at those numbers. Those should be in the Lourve because they are a work of art. He has no major flaws. He is a power hitter who has never struck out more than 93 times (and that was just his rookie year, then 69 the next year, and steadily declining since then). He should retroactively be given every single MVP award since 2001. Probably the next 5 as well to be safe. And he doesn’t seem like he has done steroids (not that I really care), either. He has never had ridiculous homer numbers, and he obviously has good discipline. Is he one of the greatest hitters ever? But I digress) player in the game.

Oh, btw
AN is already calmer. Amazing how short sighted fans are. :)
Thanks for the compliment.
Thank jesus. They act like every single slump is representative of what the rest of the season will be. Sweeney sucks! (doubt anyone was saying that last night). Holliday sucks! (notice the steady rising of his BA?). Beane sucks (bitch please). The only person I haven’t seen dumped on in some manner is Cust.
I just really feel that people need to stop expecting a playoff team. We had a great run. But this is a young team. Give it some time. I really don’t care that much if we aren’t doing great. We could use a game-changing position player from the draft. The best we were going to get with the team we had and subsequently traded away was fringe contending. Enough of that. I will take a few losing seasons in exchange for some actual contending.

Pujols is so amazing it makes me want to cry
…Such an incredible hitter. And a good person! And an incredible hitter. By the time he’s done, I think he’ll be the greatest hitter in baseball history. No one has ever done what he’s done to start a career. It’s incredible. It’s just… wow.
Anyway… I’m a huge A’s fan, but I don’t go to AN that much. I’m a member, but I dunno, CGB is just where it’s at for me sports-blog wise.

Ha! I totally agree.
It’s so sad that Pujols only has one MVP award (so far), but he’ll get more. As the years have gone by, people are finally starting to talk about him ih higher and higher circles, and by the time it’s all said and done, he’ll get his due. I mean, people put the old-timers on such a high pedestal it’s almost impossible to get anyone else up there. Look what Clemens had to do to get there. It would certainly help if St. Louis had a team around Pujols that could win multiple championships, but he’s at least won one already – that goes a long way.

Actually, that was a pretty restrained series of responses from them compared to most Texas boards. My UT brethren are not known for their eloquence and patience with fans from a school like Cal (whom they usually barely notice).
Fact is, most Texas “fans” are not graduates/alumni of the school. The whole state is UT mad with the exception of a few rural areas. Throw in the “Texas is bigger and better than everything” swagger that so many of the state’s inhabitants possess and you often get a lowest common denominator type fan base.
Sadly, the be all end all of the argument for most UT fans is that Cal got nailed by Tech in the bowl game. The reasons why that happened are irrelevant to 99.9% of them, it happened, therefore Cal was unworthy and Mack’s actions were justified.
Pity too because Austin is a fabulous place to live or visit. I’ve always found it very similar in its “feel” to the Bay Area and certainly the only place in Texas that is like that. UT and Cal have a lot more similarities than differences and in the coming years, I could see Texas start to challenge Cal academically in some areas merely because of the monetary resources the school possesses. They’ve already improved dramatically since I graduated in ’96 and are starting to outbid many traditional schools for high end professors/research minds.

My first or second day at UT introduced me to “y’all”. I was a JC transfer from College of Marin and so was 2-3 years older than most of the other people on my dorm floor. We were having lunch and I said something to the effect of “you all” or “all of you” or some such and the entire table and the tables on either side of me got really quiet with everyone looking at me.
One guy then clears his throat and says “You aren’t from Texas are you? Here we say ’y’all’.” I considered myself educated at that point.

I agree that UT fans have to be segmented into alumni and non-alumni. I have a few coworkers who are UT alums, and they don’t have the same attitude that seems to prevail among UT fans online, the majority I’m sure never went there. Austin is the Berkeley of Texas. And UT has a good business program, especially undergrad.
Having said that, I’m particularly pleased that lately we’ve stolen some good recruits out of Texas. I wish that y’all had asked Tedford, considering the venue was the “Texas BBQ” place, more about his plans to recruit more heavily in Texas this year.

So I was curious and did a quick head count, it looks like Pac-10 teams are 14-15 against Big 12 teams in the Tedford era (a handy unit of measurement). USC is 5-2, and we’re 3-1 (again, quick count, might be slightly off).
Just something to note when you’re being told that the Big 12 is 39583 times better than the Pac 10.
how do you get 3-1? I get 2-2

Interesting: Should California be allowed to go bankrupt?
There is a surprisingly sizeable blogger contingent arguing that we have to bail them out because however regrettable the events that lead here, we now have no choice. But actually, we do have a choice: we could let them go bankrupt. And we probably should.
I am not under the illusion that this will be fun. For starters, the rest of you sitting smugly out there in your snug homes, preparing to enjoy the spectacle, should prepare to enjoy the higher taxes you’re going to pay as a result. Your states and municipalities will pay higher interest on their bonds if California is allowed to default. Also, the default is going to result in a great deal of personal misery, more than a little of which is going to end up on the books of Federal unemployment insurance and other such programs.
Then there are the actual people involved. Whatever you think of, say, children who decided to be born poor, right now they are dependent on government programs, and will be put in danger if those programs are interrupted.
On the other hand, I don’t really see another way out of it. If Uncle Sugar bails out California, California will not fix its problems. Perhaps you want Obama to make it fix the problems, using the same competence, power, and can-do spirit with which he has repaired all the holes in the banking and auto manufacturing sectors. But Obma is not in a good position to do this. California Democrats are a huge part of his governing coalition. All Obama can do is shovel money into the bottomless pit of California’s political system.
Moreover, even if the administration could fix any of the core problems of California—and New York—and the banks—and the automakers—and the energy industry—they can’t fix them all. Especially given how thinly staffed Treasury is. The president and his cabinet only have so much attention, more than all of which seems to be occupied by the problems already on their plate. They don’t really have the time, knowledge, energy, or staff to take on running a whole ’nother government.
Bork bork bork!
It’s a good argument on paper – people won’t be willing to fix it until it’s well and truly broken.
Unfortunately, the consequences of letting it break will fuck over millions of the state’s most disadvantaged people – kids, the elderly, poor, sick, disabled, etc.
I think that Right Wing Republicans want failure for its own sake. The Reps are marginalized in an electoral sense but through Prop 13 and the budget both needing 2/3s majorities, they have negative control. Then if things fail, it still isn’t their fault since they’re in the minority.
Stanfurd Delendum Est.
If the State of California doesn’t qualify as ‘too big to fail’, I’m pretty sure that phrase no longer has any meaning.
So, basically, you gotta Go Bears!

Would someone pls explain to me...
what his rationale is for letting Cali go bankrupt? Does he explain himself in this article?
I’m I really this stupid or is this just an editorial with no concrete evidence or research that would support his opinion?
In fact, woudl someone pls explain to me what his counter argument is? What solution would he suggest instead? I don’t get it. This just sounds like a rant to me and that wasn’t even worth reading.
Obviously Avi posted this b/c there was some interesting point in it… can someone pls just explain to me what that point is?
I think she's arguing that continuing the bailout cycle to the states
Will not solve the growing state deficit, and would only postpone the problem to a future date. Plus it doesn’t really fix the issues plaguing the state economy. But yes, there is no anecdotal evidence to back this up.
Bork bork bork!
Yes, I got that. But what was the purpose of writing this article… did she provide some evidence or even a good rationale… some history, some research?? I can excuse an article that lacks any concrete research if it teaches me something new… but this rant doesn’t even do that.
I’m not a supporter of state gov bailouts… not by a longshot. But I don’t get why this article in particular was so interesting or enlightening. If she’s claiming a bailout won’t help… what is her rationale to support this? Am I missing something here?
If you want to read some good articles about gov intervention read what the Cato guys write or check out a very popular blog here called IA (information arb).
http://www.informationarbitrage.com/
If this chick wants to argue about too much gov intervention then it would help to actually use some research or present some evidence… or, at least, teach me something.
I was considering a similar response. I see no penises or penis shaped structures there.

A Commendation
I would like to thank everyone who was discussing politics over the past two days’ DBDs for keeping a civil and, for the most part, non-ideological tone in regards to the discussion. It’s the sort of subject that can easily lead to the kinds of inane flame wars that can turn people off off a website like this, as well as get people warned and entire subthreads deleted, but thankfully, none of those measures were needed due to the circumspection of everyone involved.
Thanks, and keep on keeping it civil, people.
