SHOUT OUT: NEWPORT HARBOR OLB/WR/TE CECIL WHITESIDE COMMITS TO CAL
Here's his Rivals Profile
As you can see, they've rated him as the No. 91 overall prospect in the country. He's a true athlete and has shown an ability to rush the passer, drop back in coverage, block punts, and even deflect passes at the LoS. Even more, he's dominated one of toughest leagues in SoCal as a rising 4-year starter. As football guys like to say, "HE'S A PLAYMAKER." And, he's got a ton of power.
He could bring his considerable talents to Cal Track & Field as well. He is an elite Discus thrower (No. 3 in the nation IN HIS JUNIOR YEAR). He also works with Tony Gonzalez's former coach, who said he could be one of the best prospects ever!
Addition: http://www.milesplit.us/rankings/2009/outdoor/hs/m/D Here's his discus ranking... He's 3rd in the class of 2010 rankings
Quotes from ESPNU Recruiting:
"When I think about Cal, it's just a school I'm very comfortable with and I know I'll be happy there the next four or five years. I went to their Junior Day and really liked it there and it's just a great fit for me."
However, it does not appear that Whiteside's recruitment is finalized, "I still might take my visits in the fall. Cal has really high academic requirements so I might do visits just as a backup. Arizona, Colorado, Arizona State and USC are a few other schools I'm looking at but Cal is definitely my first choice and where I want to be."
You guys know me: I get pumped about recruits. To be honest, I can't think of many more prospects in the nation I'd get more excited about. I MEAN, HE'S HUMBLE TO BOOT. He and Jay Guy will be stars for the Bears in the very near future.

woah woah woah…
No. 91 in the country?
I know these lists are kind of hearsay, but that’s pretty good for a west coast player.
Heaps and Hinder...come on down!
I don't like how his recruitment is still "open"
…. I would prefer these kids would make a decision and stick to it, or not announce anything at all.
The bitch slap from Stanley Hasiak still stings.
HAIL HYDROTECH!
Well, a mod on another board said he was so blown away he canceled some appointment with SC after his trip to Cal.
Arizona, Colorado, Arizona State and USC are a few other schools I’m looking at but Cal is definitely my first choice and where I want to be.
Hasiak never said anything to that effect.
HYDROTECH IS FREE!
it’s cool, tbred actually took the time to write a fan post. heaps of credit to him! no need to hinder anything.

T-Bred, so if he “commits,” does this mean he’s been offered? And if he’s been offered, does that mean he’s been accepted to Cal? He mentions that Cal’s academic requirements are “really high” and that he has backups so that implies that he hasn’t gotten in yet… I don’t want to count chickens before they hatch.

I’m guessing, but I think “accepted” and “enrolled” happen at the nearly the same time for football scholarship guys (sometime in the summer?). In some cases it might take those flukey BYU online courses that passes anyone who breathes.
It begs the question, is college football about student-athletes or unofficial minor leagues for the pros? Is it fair that 0% of the rest of the student body has that GPA/SAT? Is it fair that other minor sports have real student-athletes and we don’t even support them in terms of attendance?

This would make an excellent fanpost and/or ethics textbook case.

He’s definitely been offered.
Since he’s still a junior in HS, he hasn’t been officially admitted yet because he hasn’t finished his senior year grades. You could say most of the commitments around the country are conditional because senior year grades are also considered in NCAA and school admission requirements.
All this being said, Tedford and company hardly ever offer athletes they don’t think will qualify. That’s part of the reason we didn’t offer a couple of kids from Merced and Fresno last year: They weren’t going to qualify. So, they’ve obviously seen no problem with his grades and stuff.
I think his comments were more in-line with his humble personality. All of the quotes I’ve seen on the recruiting websites highlight his complimenting of teammates and things like that. Also, he goes to a very good high school, which I’m sure will help him through the process.

That looks like 2 special recruits so far!
Hopefully we can keep it going! I would like to see those 2 guys from Monte Vista come! That QB had a great year and I’ve talked to opposing coaches that really liked him.!
Would like to see Chris Martin from BOD change his mind and drop nd for “THE BEARS”!
holy carp, I knew I was going to use the punter’s name at some point. Thanks for catching it, he is indeed Jay Guy.
Ray Guy or Jay Guy?

You are correct, sir.
Remember: Summer decided to go to Berkeley too.
(at least, I think that’s what happened)

Ryan went to Cal to study architecture. I think we was planning to land an internship with Mike Brady. Summer went to Brown, and Seth followed her to Rhode Island, but I can’t remember if they decided to come back to California. I’ll give you all an update on Ryan once he reciprocates my Facebook friend request. (Yes, my life is pathetic, full of fictional friends such as Hydro and Shu-gene.)

I thought Summer went to Brown with Seth, but then he got booted or rejected or something like that.
My son, if and when I have one, will play for the California Golden Bears.

He does sound like Pain Train II
“He is a hybrid outside linebacker and has the frame to add a lot of bulk while retaining his good athleticism and vertical attacking skills. He shows very good perimeter speed on film. When you combine that straight-line acceleration with his good first-step quickness off the ball and long frame/arms to keep blockers off his body — you can see the promise he has as a pass-rusher, a major component for a 3-4 outside ‘backer. Aside from the impressive physical tools he is a savvy blitzer and pass-rusher; knows how to counter and set up blockers. He will need to work on his technique in pass coverage and smooth out his hips opening and turning but the athleticism is there to mold.
