DBD 04.09.09 3 Day Weeks and Fantasy Baseball
I used to be like all of you. A sucker working a day job, coming into the office while the sun was rising and leaving when it came down. Rinse and repeat 5 days a week. But then I realized something: 5 days a week is for suckers. That's why last week I only worked 3 days. And this week I only worked 3 days. Never again should anyone have to work Thursday or Friday. It helped that last weekend I was going to DC to see GWU Law and this weekend I'm going to New Orleans to give a talk about hippies. It also helps that I had vacation time to spare and that my boss is totally cool with me not being around, but all of that is beyond the point. 3 day weeks. It's the wave of the future, get on board while the getting's good. Except you Spazzy, we need a 5 day a week Welcome Sherriff. Four years from now, when 3 day weeks are the gold standard, you'll be able to tell your children (I'm looking at you Carp, congratulations BTW) about the origins of 3 day work weeks. You'll also have to apologize to them for the origins of HONK.
In other news (Fantasy Baseball news). The draft didn't move, it's still tonight at 7. For some reason Yahoo hates me, and won't let me change the draft today, it will only let me push the draft to Friday or later. Well screw you Yahoo, I'll just autodraft my team. I've already autodrafted in my keeper league, why not the CGB league too.
In my absence, I want all of you to talk a lot of shit. I don't mean "Hey, that pick sucked." I mean, "Hey that pick sucked more than your indeterminate blood relation who may or may not still be alive." I think that everyone aside from B& Hammer-addicted zoonews can get on board with this shittalking platform. I'll miss you all, hopefully someone can relay the best fantasy draft insults to me when I get back from New Orleans. I expect yellowfever to bring his A game, because he's clearly been building up witty commentary and not giving us chats.
Finally, as you've already guessed, I won't be commenting in this DBD. That's right suckers, as a fringe benefit of my three day weeks, you get 4 days of Maharg free DBDs. Make me proud, it's a great sacrifice to miss the DBDs, but someone has to speak out against the treesitters at academic conferences. Dumpy Muff references FTW!
I know I said finally, but I have one more point. CGB tailgate before the spring game, let's make it happen.
Now bring me links. The less legitimate the better!!!!
The opinions expressed in a FanPost are, in every way, reflective of the opinions of every California Golden Blogs Marshawnthusiast. Moreover, they are reflective of every employee of SBNation, including Tyler "Blez" Bleszinski.

At no point in your rambling, incoherent DBD were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought.

ZOMG I WAS GOING TO DO A DBD ABOUT FANTASY BASEBALL TODAY
Still happy over the fact that the Nets signed Ryan Anderson. Now if only they can sign Leon Powe after this year...
MY THOUGHT ABOUT YOUR DBD WAS THAT YOU FUCKED OVER YELLOW FEVER WHO WORKED HARD ON HIS DBD TODAY. THIS IS JUST LIKE YOU THE MAHARG! YOU DONT CARE ABOUT NOBODY OR NOTHING!
PS Anybody watch that As game yesterday? NO-MAAAAAAAAAAAAAR!!!!!!!!!!! What a great game. As score 3 with 2 outs in the 9th (and in some cases 2 strikes) to beat the Angels. Fuentes aint no KRod (much to my fantasy baseball team “Ethnic Comic”’s disappointment).

like a real ball fan, I caught it on the AM (860 baby!). Korach was legendary. So much for that vaunted bullpen! I’m loving this new A’s offense with a lot of veterans. Nomar, Giambi, Chavy, Holliday, Ellis…good stuff all around. I got a strange feeling that Andersen/Cahill will be just fine up the bigs this year. We’ll see.
Heaps and Hinder...come on down!
Like a real fan I should listen to it on the radio? What kind of dumb shit is that? “Hey,ya, lets turn off that HD Tv to listen to it on the radio. God forbid I get to see myself whats happening? Hey, is it possislb eot get JOE STARKEY to call this baseball game??? Thatd make it even better!”

sighs.
While I enjoy HD ball, last night I didn’t have time to watch as I was working on my grant for stimulus package (TWSS) funds. You might find this weird, but I think I actually prefer baseball on the radio. They are throwing out all kinds of crazy dough right now and it’s much needed!!! Plus Glenn Kuiper and Ray Fosse on TV just don’t do it for me. Plus I feel like I’m tied down to the TV. I love to have the ballgame on while working in the office, garage, fishing, etc. Korach is really good, but Cotroneo makes me yearn for Bill King.
Heaps and Hinder...come on down!
My dad is the same way. I agree about feeling tied down but I didn’t have anything better to do. Also, I like Fosse and Kuiper. I think that, not ESPN, is my dream job. Just committed to one team, hopefully my favorite one.

If you go through college with no TV and/or cable, you might appreciate the radio a bit more. My wife and I were too busy with school and extracurriculars to have time for TV. The radio though was awesome.
Heaps and Hinder...come on down!
Radio is much better than TV
Try out that Delay Play device which syncs up the Radio to the TV. I have one and it is great. That way you don’t have to EVER listen to Jack Buck, Kuiper, McCarver, or any other moron broadcaster who calls the game like they are talking to a 12 year old.
Go A’s.

THIS WEEK: The No. 8-ranked California women’s tennis team (14-4, 5-1 Pac-10) will play its third and fourth home matches in a row at Hellman Tennis Complex as the Golden Bears host No. 56 Oregon (9-9, 1-4 Pac-10) in a noon match on Saturday, April 11, and No. 45 Pepperdine (9-9) at noon on Sunday, April 12. Cal pulled off consecutive victories over the Arizona schools last weekend to maintain a spot in the race for the conference title with just two Pac-10 matches left on the schedule. Both of this weekend’s matches will be streamed live via links at the women’s tennis page at CalBears.com.
LAST WEEK: The Bears claimed convincing wins over No. 21 Arizona State and No. 59 Arizona to open up a five-match home-stand. Cal defeated the Sun Devils for the ninth consecutive time in a 5-2 victory as senior Bojana Bobusic clinched the win with her 6-3, 6-2 court-three win against Laila Abdala. The Bears were unable to win the doubles point for just the sixth time this season but responded with five wins in singles play. Cal’s No. 6-ranked duo of sophomore Mari Andersson and freshman Jana Juricova walked away with a big 8-2 victory against No. 13-ranked Micaela Hein and Kelcy McKenna to get the Bears’ only doubles win. Juricova later defeated No. 3-ranked McKenna in singles by a 6-1, 6-2 score on the top singles court. Cal took out the Wildcats in a 7-0 sweep as it won all nine matches on the day. Andersson and Juricova got their 15th doubles win of the year to start things off before the Bears rolled to their 12th doubles point of the season. Freshman Stephany Chang clinched the win for Cal with a 6-1, 6-4 victory against Debora Castany at court six. With the win over Arizona, the Bears pushed their record to 10-2 when they win the doubles point.

BIG SPLASH:
This Week in Cal Women’s Water Polo
The No. 5 Golden Bears (28-5 overall and 3-3 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation) return home to host No. 1 Stanford (13-10, 0-5 MPSF) in MPSF play. Cal is 9-1 in its last three weeks of play with its most recent victory coming last Saturday against No. 8 Arizona State. The Bears will be looking for their first victory against the rival Cardinal since the 2000 season. Last year, Cal came within one goal of Stanford thanks to a score by Camille Hewko, but fell just short, 6-5.
Golden Bears Earn Conference Win No. 3
The No. 5 California women’s water polo earned its third conference victory with a 11-9 decision over No. 8 Arizona State on Saturday evening at Spieker Aquatics Complex. Junior utility Camille Hewko led all scorers with four goals while freshman driver Emily Csikos notched a hat trick. Arizona State tied the game for the fourth time, 9-9, in the fourth quarter. Csikos gave Cal the lead for good, 10-9, with a powerful skip shot with 4:35 to play in regulation. Hewko distanced the Bears with her fourth goal of the game, bringing the final tally to 11-9.
Hewko Named MPSF Co-Player of the Week
Hewko was awarded co-player of the week honors by the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation. Hewko scored four goals to lead the No. 5 Golden Bears to an 11-9 victory over No. 8 Arizona State on April 4. The decoration is the first of Hewko’s career and the third time in the 2009 campaign that a Bear has been given the weekly accolade. Hewko helped the Bears get their first goal of the game when she earned a five-meter penalty shot for the Bears just 45 seconds into the game, and junior driver Meghan Corse converted. The second stanza began in similar fashion to the first – with Hewko captaining the first offensive. She gave the Bears the six-on-five and lobbed in a goal off a pass from Julie Oreglia. Hewko sent the Bears into the break with a 6-4 advantage. Hewko followed up with another score in the third, and she distanced the Bears with her fourth goal of the game, bringing the final tally to 11-9.
Q&A With the Golden Bears
CalBears.com will be running question and answers with the Cal women’s water polo team all season. This week’s Q&A is with redshirt junior utility Stephanie Schnugg, and you can read it by clicking here. With a father who won a national title in men’s water polo at California and competed on the Olympic team, two cousins on the men’s water polo team and a sister who was a women’s soccer student-athlete at Cal, Stephanie Schnugg comes from a family rich in Cal history. But this Schnugg has already set her own course. As a true freshman, she scored 10 goals and had 10 goals in her sophomore campaign, taking a year to redshirt in between. This season, she has already surpassed both of those totals with 19 goals thus far in 2009. CalBears.com took some time to find out more about growing up in the Schnugg family as well as her interest in art, which is her major.

BEAR NOTES: Cal (15-14, 3-6) will be striving to get back on the winning track this week when it travels to Washington (11-19, 1-5) for a three-game Pac-10 series, April 9-11, at Husky Ballpark in Seattle. The Golden Bears are in the midst of a season-high four-game losing streak after being swept last week at No. 16-ranked Oregon State. Offensively, the Bears continue to be paced by sophomore outfielder/first baseman Mark Canha, who is batting a team-leading .407 (3rd in Pac-10) with a team-best nine home runs (4th in Pac-10) and 27 RBI (5th in Pac-10). Canha, who was the March 3 Pac-10 Player of the Week after Cal’s sweep of Long Beach State, is also first in the Pac-10 with 46 hits and is second in the league in total bases (80), third in slugging percentage (.708) and fifth with a .481 on-base percentage. He is currently on a 17-game hitting streak and has hit safely in 28 of 29 games this season. Another hot hitter for Cal is sophomore shortstop Brian Guinn, who is second on the team with a .373 average (6th in Pac-10) and had a key two-out, two-run single in the ninth inning to help send the game into extra-innings in the Bears’ 5-4, 11-inning loss at OSU. Guinn is fifth in the Pac-10 with 38 hits and eighth with 25 runs. Junior center fielder Brett Jackson, a first-team Preseason All-American in Baseball America, is batting .339 and is first in the conference with 13 doubles. The Bears are second in the Pac-10 with a .304 team batting average and have a league-best 314 hits, 34 home runs and 502 total bases. On the mound, junior left-hander Michael Bugary is 3-0 with a 1.53 ERA (3rd in Pac-10) and a save. Bugary leads the Bears with 43 strikeouts (9th in Pac-10) in 29.1 innings. Opponents are batting .202 (7th in Pac-10) in 17 relief appearances (3rd in Pac-10). Cal is first in the Pac-10 with 92 strikeouts looking and 10 saves. Nine of Cal’s opponents this season were 2008 NCAA Regional participants. The Bears’ 2009 schedule is considered the nation’s third toughest by Boyd’s World.

Miller Strikes Back: #3
It’s Gronkowski:
Rob Gronkowski, TE, Arizona: Who’s the nation’s best tight end? Some might say Oklahoma’s Jermaine Gresham. Others might say this freak of nature. The Pac-10 Blog is prepared to go on the record believing Gronkowski will opt out of his senior year and will be the first tight end selected in the 2010 NFL draft. Gronkowski is a finely tuned 6-foot-6, 265 pounds, and he is the toughest matchup in the conference. Mike Stoops this week called him “unguardable,” and he’s right. As a true sophomore in 2008, he caught 47 passes for 672 yards with 10 touchdowns — yeah, a TD every 4.7 receptions is good — despite missing three games with mono. As a true freshman, he caught 28 passes for 525 yards — 18.8 per reception — with six touchdowns and earned consensus freshman All-American honors. While it’s always entertaining to see Gronkowski loose in the secondary — poor, poor 190-pound defensive backs — he also is worth following on a running play. His proficiency in blocking will be a huge selling point to the NFL. Arizona is breaking in a new quarterback. Whoever wins the job should be well-advised: Throw the ball to Gronk.

I may be autodrafting for the first few rounds as well. Although Tedford said practice would be a bit shorter today, so I may be able to make it on time.
Alright, fine, I admit it! "Hydration Technician" really DOES just mean "water boy!"
Can you ask Tedford for help? “Coach, should I go with Brad Lidge or KRod???” “Drafting a closer this early, what are you INSANE?!?!”

Very sad news from Anaheim
Nick Adenhart, a rookie pitcher for the Los Angeles Angels, died in a car crash early Thursday morning, just hours after pitching in a game in Anaheim.
A source with knowledge of the situation confirmed to ESPN.com that Adenhart had been killed in a car accident.
Wednesday night, Adenhart had pitched six scoreless innings, giving up seven hits, striking out five and walking three in just his fourth major league start.
Like Disneyland? That’s a terrifying thought.

Obviously a great comeback for the A's
but all of that just pales considering this life and death story.
There was a crazy A’s fan who was wearing a green and yellow shirt with a likeness of Jesus which said “Jesus is an Athletics Fan.” When the rally monkey made its appearance, that guy yelled: “You guys have a fucking monkey we have fucking Jesus!!!!” Pretty funny at the time.

On a tragic note, Nick Adenhart, the Angels pitcher who carved up the A’s last night, died in a hit-and-run accident. It’s been confirmed by his family and the OC Register. The youngster was in line for the Angels # 3 spot in the rotation.

A Cal fan over at The Bleacher Report likes Cal’s chances next year:
Pac 10 Title- California
Here’s what should scare teams about Jahvid Best—last year, he was coming off major surgery (yes I realize he had two surgeries this offseason, but they were very minor), had no consistent QB play, and had an offensive line severely depleted by injuries…and he ran for 1580 yards with 15 TDs and led the nation in yards per carry.
Cal has offensive lineman who were starting last year and are now struggling to hold on to a backup role. That’s how many injuries they had.
Again, there are concerns here, as there are with all the teams on the list. But Cal has so much talent returning. The secondary and defensive line are back, and the new linebackers are more experienced than others might lead you to believe.
All the receivers and running backs return, and if Riley (because he WILL win the job) can play the way he’s capable of playing, Cal could put together a very special season.
I like this guy!
Cal Bears Offensive Grades
Offensive Outlook: With essentially half their line returning, all three leading pass catchers, veteran quarterback, and two lethal running-backs, the Bears look to have the most well rounded offensive attack heading into next season.
The offense will live or die by the performance of their offensive line and whether or not Riley can show progression in the system and play up to his potential, this of course assuming he’s the man for the job in Coach Tedford’s eyes.
I see good things for the 2009 Cal Bears offense.
Cal has/has not
California Has: California has the most exciting player in the nation in Jahvid Best.
California has the potential to fight for conference titles every year.
California Head Man Jeff Tedford will have Kevin Riley playing at a much higher level in 2009, so watch out, Pac-10.
California Has Not: California has not landed a five star recruit since 2005 when they got four. (DeSean Jackson, Lavelle Hawkins, Joe Ayoob, and Desmond Bishop)
California has not won the big game when it matters.
California has not missed the post season since 2003, going 5-1 in the past five bowl games. Cal also has not had a losing season under head-man Jeff Tedford.
Gold At The End Of The Rainbow: California will need to replace key defensive players, but the return of Best and Riley should create one of the best offenses in the Pac-10.
Best runs for over 1,500 yards while Kevin Riley throws for over 4,000. California sits in first place nearly the entire season only to have it ripped out from under them. Oh well; the Holiday Bowl will be greatly appreciated
That guy’s bootsy.
KenCraw’s post on Tucker/Hagan sitting out based on academics:
To me, I internalized that as meaning it was a cooperative decision between the player and the coaches, perhaps even initiated by the player. I imagined a conversation that went something like this:
Coach: How are things going academically?
Player: I’ve been struggling with my (insert difficult class) class
Coach: How can I help
Player: I’m not sure, I’m just not finding time to do all of my work
Coach: Is your weight-lifting and practice taking too much time
Player: Well… I love going, but yeah, it takes a lot of time
Coach: Tell you what, you’re a strong player who’s going to start. Why don’t you take spring practice off to focus on academics
Player: Thanks coach
But Tedford when asked about it after Saturday’s scrimage (I think some were anticipating that Tucker and Hagan would at least participate in the weekend practices or perhaps even just the scrimages) Tedford’s wording of their status was a bit less chartable than the above theoretical conversation:
Yeah, they do academics when we’re at practice and then they come out at the end of practice and get their conditioning in.

especially these type of posts:
UCLA Has: UCLA has got to be kicking themselves for losing D Coordinator Dewayne Walker to New Mexico State. If there were any bright points for the Bruins, it was their intensity on the defensive side of the ball.
UCLA has got to figure out how to get some production out of the run game. The Bruins ran for only 993 yards last year. Six running-backs rushed for more yards individually in the Pac-10 in 2008.
UCLA Has Not: UCLA has not had a coach depart with a losing record since William F. Barnes left in 1964 with a record of 31-34-3. Rick Neuheisel is currently at 4-8.
UCLA has not picked the right guy at the QB position. Kevin Craft threw for 2,341 yards and seven touchdowns which might seem decent, but those numbers were overshadowed by a 55 percent completion percentage and a ridiculous 20 interceptions.
Not to B-Ruin Your Mood…But: UCLA will continue to be inept on offense, but questions circling Dewayne Walker’s replacement will be squashed when the Bruins lead the league in rush defense.
Neuheisel sniffs a bowl, but misses out again. UCLA has the No. 5-ranked recruiting class for 2009. Maybe Neuheisel could get outta L.A. with a winning record after all.

Harden to the NBA…to no one’s surprise.
TEMPE, Ariz. (AP)—All-America guard James Harden is leaving Arizona State for the NBA.
The 6-foot-5 sophomore and Pac-10 player of the year will hire an agent, ending any chance of returning to the Sun Devils.
"I felt I’m ready for it as far as taking my game to the next level," he said at a news conference Wednesday. "It’s a dream come true. It’s my dream since I put a ball in my hand, so why not take the opportunity?"
Harden, who led the Pac-10 in scoring at 20.1 points per game and was the first Arizona State player to be named a first-team AP All-American, said the decision to declare for the draft wasn’t as automatic as many perceived.
"People thought it was going to be an easy decision—‘Well, I’m leaving,"’ he said, "but it wasn’t the case because I have great teammates here, great coaches. Everything about this program made it hard to leave."
So, basically, you gotta Go Bears!

NFL using social networking sites to vet players they're interested in drafting
Maybe Danzig was right about protecting your privacy. LINK
The woman in the Facebook picture is attractive, with auburn hair and icy blue eyes. She is flanked by several other women, each armed with an inviting smile and curvy features. Along with the photo is a hopeful note from the female "fan" asking to be added to a player’s personal networking profile.
The twist? These women don’t actually exist, at least not in the way that some unsuspecting NFL prospects are led to believe. Indeed, they are a figment of one NFL team’s imagination – a phony Facebook profile, used as a tool by one franchise in the pre-draft vetting process. A Trojan horse that, when used effectively, unlocks a door to a world of Internet pictures and information which most NFL teams are now consistently compiling to help polish their dossiers on draft picks.

Rick Spielman remembers one Myspace page, the kind that makes a personnel man sit up in his seat, reach for a pencil, and push a particular question to the top of his list. He refuses to divulge the name of the player involved, but concedes that the Minnesota Vikings ran into the profile "a year or two ago." One that the Vikings looked at very closely at the league’s annual scouting combine in Indianapolis, then grilled privately over some of the things he had posted on his networking profile.
"He had a big picture of a bunch of drug money and drugs on a carpet," the Vikings’ vice president of player personnel said, shaking his head. "It was the kind of thing that, you know, it was under his name. So when we had some time with him, of course we were like ‘What is this all about?’ … It was an interesting conversation. He had a legitimate explanation for what happened and we followed up on it and we believe it was what he said it was. But that’s one of the things that happens [with networking profiles]."

Tucked inside the book is a chapter called "The Last Naked Warrior," which is a nickname defensive end Charles Haley used for himself. Haley, if you recall, was a goddamn beast of a pass rusher, and also a legendary asshole. But what you may not know about Haley is that he was:
A) Legitimately insane
B) Hung like Milton Berle
C) Liked jacking off in front of teammates and coaches
And not playful jerking off. We’re talking the real, hardcore, I’m-home-and-my-wife-is-at-the-movies jerking off. I’ll let Pearlman fill you in:
Haley would stroll up to an unsuspecting (49er) teammate, whip out his phallus, and repeatedly stroke it in his face. Players initially laughed it off…Hey look, it’s Charles’ huge erection! And he’s pleasuring himself! Man, that is funny.
But Haley refused to stop. He would jerk off in the locker room, in the trainer’s room. He’d wrap his hand around his penis, turn toward a Joe Montana or John Taylor, and bellow, ‘You know you wanna suck this!’

I see no problem with going for a top QB if they can move back. I think this scenario will come into play if A) they don’t think any of the defensive players left there are worthy of such a high pick - VERY LIKELY— or B) the top 3 OTs are off the board, ,so they, in essence, have no reason to pick right here… They could trade number 10 to someone who wants to get Sanchez, and maybe pick-up Freeman then. If they move back, I see much more value in a S, CB, or LB though.

Sure, but if they fail, you don’t overpay them by millions and you can cut your losses and try again. Also, by “later rounds”, Imean second day, not necessarily round 7.
Also, you can definitely find gems in the later rounds. They may not be elites, but you will get people like Tony Romo, Matt Moore, Matt Schaub, Shaun Hill, Hasselbeck, Bulger, etc.
JAI HO!
Matt Moore sucks. Matt Schaub, ok, maybe. Shaun Hill – isn’t he why we’re having this debate? Hasselbeck and Bulger, ok, you win. But what are the odds, honestly? It’s far more likely that that late round draft pick is Mike McMahon than Matt Schaub, after all.

Shaun Hill is an undervalued commodity. Matt Moore has potential.
But the point is this – sure, they’re likely to fail (3rd round or later), but they don’t require ridiculous contracts, you can basically cut them at any time, and if they show promise in practise, you keep them.
JAI HO!
You could say that about any position though. The point is you’re far more likely to get a good QB if you take one earlier in the draft. Given how important the position is, it’s worth the risk.

Look, it’s not as if you have two choices – Peyton Manning or David Carr. There are in-betweens that you can go far into the playoffs and even win championships with.
JAI HO!
He had good games that year, he had bad games that year.
Those results out of a first-round QB – disappointing; those results out of a fifth-round QB – worth the pick.

Even if he were a fifth round pick, you’d still be looking for an upgrade. Which is kinda the point. You don’t want to have to keep looking.

JAI HO!
I guess you won't have to worry about the Niners choosing Stafford
Here:
In a recent SI feature, Stafford revealed to our Peter King that during an interview at the NFL combine, the 49ers team psychologist pressed him on the subject of the divorce of Stafford’s parents when the quarterback was in high school. Stafford says he assured the shrink he’d adjusted well, only to be told he “sounded if he might have unfinished business.” After wisecracking to King that he wondered, in that moment, “how much I’m being charged per hour for this,” Stafford was quick to point out that he got it: with clubs forking over fortunes for first-round talent, no one wants to leave a stone unturned.
That mini-controversy was given fresh life recently, when Niners head coach Mike Singletary all but dismissed the possibility of drafting Stafford in a radio interview with KNBR in San Francisco. “If you’re going to look at drafting a guy in the first round,” he told host Ralph Barbieri, “and you’re going to pay him millions of dollars, and asking him about a divorce about his parents, if that’s going to be an issue, then you know what? Maybe he doesn’t belong here.”
Still happy over the fact that the Nets signed Ryan Anderson. Now if only they can sign Leon Powe after this year...
Heard that interview, Singletary sounded like a fool. Ralph was being Ralph, tolerate him or hate him, but that interview really made me worry about the cast of characters currently leading the Niners. The quickest way to move on is to just answer the questions, coach.
“I’m not going to answer that negative question, I came on to talk about positive things” is not going to play well with ANY media source. Other outlets are already complaining about their recent decision to not allow any assistants to speak to the media. It’s fast turning into the Raiders, where they try to control the story despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary.
Sanchez is an ok pick in teh first round or the first part of the second round
but not at 10th over all, that’s to high. to much guarteed money, to much pressure to play him before he is ready. (see alex smith).
at 28th or so pic, it’s a good deal….(see aaron rogers)

They would be even greater if they let anybody in, like we do here.
I like how they say they couldn't get DeSean in
when Brian Price is currently on their roster.
I’m not sure I have all of it correctly down to give you more detail
This is always the answer: we have more difficult admission standards, but we can’t give you any proof or details, so you’re just going to have to accept ridiculous (DeSean) anecdotes.
www.californiagoldenblogs.com
I don’t understand why they think DeSean wanted to come to UCLA over Cal. Their best WR Terrence Whatever actually wanted to come to CAL, but we didn’t offer. He’s been on record as saying he wanted badly to come to Cal, so the game he always gets up for the most is the Cal game. No need to speculate… He’s said that in interviews.
DeSean came at a time when Cal was the hot commodity in the conference.

ucla wasn’t even in the mix
They're after our precious bodily fluids
That’s the most common rumor… but that still sounds pretty stupid.
I think he was just sold on the playing time, playing baseball if things didn’t work out, the fact we were in such high demand in 2005 after the 2004 season (our best selling point was that we would be the ones to unseat USC in the upcoming years), and the great relationship he had developed with Tedford
I mean, it’s pretty simple. 2005 was our best class because of the ‘hot commodity’ factor and the BCS season we had.

Which superpower would *you* rather have?
ESPN’s Jim Caple interviewed Torii Hunter (also, Giambi):
6. Which superpower would you most want to have — the strength of 100 men, the ability to fly or the ability to turn invisible?
I would say the strength of 100 men. If I was invisible, I’d be hiding myself and sneaking around, and that’s kind of shady. And if I was flying, I wouldn’t get no exercise. I would just be up flying around. I’d be a fat flier. But if you have the strength of 100 men, you would be in pretty good shape, walking on the ground. I’m always opening the door and lifting weights and stuff, and if you have the strength of 100 men, you know you’re going to use it.
“Kind of shady” made me laugh … personally, I’d go for flying, because it would probably be more comfortable than wedging into an economy seat for 25 hours to India

I thought the city of Berkeley was planning on building a new high-end hotel to appease demands made by academic conferences and such. I’m pretty sure the location is at the corner of Center and Fulton/Oxford where the old tile manufacturing plant is.
This was the best I could find:
http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/blogs/ontheblock/detail?blogid=58&entry_id=35253
The DEIR evaluates a skyline that would include two new 220-foot hotels in the downtown inner core area and four additional buildings at 180 feet, with an outer core that includes six new 120-foot buildings, two of which would belong to the university.
By way of comparison, the existing downtown skyline’s lone high-rises at the Great Western building at 173 feet and the Well Fargo tower, which houses 13 floors in 180 feet.
The hotel buildings would include both guest rooms and private condos for permanent residents.

In the announcement, the USSF didn’t list the new 49ers Stadium in Santa Clara as a possible venue, but I’d imagine that once that gets done (along with the BART extension to the South Bay) it would be the Bay’s premier venue. It would have a few thousand more seats than the revamped Memorial (~65000 Vs. 68000), more parking, more luxury suites, and it would be situated in between SF and San Jose, drawing from both metro areas.

On an emotion-filled evening at the 2008 Emerald Bowl, then-Cal linebacker Worrell Williams offered his individual goodbyes, imputing players with his departing words.
And for his final personal blessing, Williams grabbed freshman linebacker Mychal Kendricks, looked him straight in the eye and told him this: You have the potential to be the best linebacker ever to come out of Berkeley.
It’s a scene that Kendricks remembers quite clearly.
“It was kind of emotional,” Kendricks recalled. “Just to think that other people think that about myself, it lets me know what I have to do and what expectations are. If other people believe in myself, I’ve got to, too.”
At this point in time, Kendricks remains raw and unproven, but the departure of Williams, Anthony Felder and Zack Follett to the NFL Draft have produced openings that weren’t there in 2008.
The freshman played sparingly on special teams last season, while today the coaching staff is trying to figure out whether the 6-foot raw talent fares better outside or inside. Under the leisurely springtime sun, Kendricks has been rather busy-in order to maximize his number of snaps, the Bears staff has the freshman playing with both the first- and third-team defenses.
Gregory described Kendricks as “talented” and “explosive.”
Kendricks said more or less the same things about himself, albeit a bit more colorfully.
“Speed and intensity, all day,” he said, describing his approach. “One hundred miles per hour at all times. I don’t have all the size and everything, but I’ve got strength and speed. I think people underestimate me.”

When people look at you and then whisper to their friends “what is that old guy doing in the student section? is he someone’s dad?”
So, basically, you gotta Go Bears!
My rule of thumb is that when people you hung out as an undergrad graduate themselves, you’re too old to be mixing with undergrads. Which would make it 2 years at the very most.
DAMN YOU NEW STANFORD STADIUM!

Not the actual story, which is kind of scary, but this quote:
San Jose police spokesman Sgt. Ronnie Lopez said the manhole covers are heavy and would take quite an effort to lift, perhaps even requiring a tool.
And people wonder why newspapers are going under…

slick rick essentially says that ucla has higher academic standards than does cal. also mentions (and i have no idea why, since he wasn’t even around at the time) marshawn and djax as players that weren’t academically good enough to go to ucla.
i'm here to clean your pool but i don't have a pool *bowchica bowow*
I always heard stories about students applying for something like Forrestry, getting in, and then switching their major to MCB or something like that. Can that happen? Could Slick Rick (gasp!) be correct?!?!
No, slick rick cannot be correct. No, slick rick cannot be correct. No, slick rick cannot be correct. No, slick rick cannot be correct. No, slick rick cannot be correct. I have heard the same, and feel like at some point I met another person who actually claimed to have done this. However, my understanding is that if you are accepted for forestry, you would have to apply to switch into L&S.
I guess it is the same as apply to the engineering school, but if the rumor is true has lower standards than the general population.
If any players got into school this way, you certainly would hear about it.

Still happy over the fact that the Nets signed Ryan Anderson. Now if only they can sign Leon Powe after this year...
