And now let's get on to some Cal links!
Mens tennis player Pac10 Player of the week:
No. 81-ranked California men's tennis sophomore Pedro Zerbini was named Pac-10 Men's Tennis Player of the Week for March 30-April 5, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today. The second-year Golden Bear becomes the second Cal player to win the award more than once in the same season since Conor Niland in 2006 (three times); Cal's sixth overall honor.
Zerbini helped the Bears pull off the 4-2 upset of No. 20-ranked Arizona this weekend to give the Wildcats their first and only home loss of the season. He teamed up with senior Geoff Chizever (ranked No. 13 together) to take out No. 80-ranked Pat Methem and Francois VanderMerwe, 8-4, on the top court. The duo is now 23-6 in doubles this year. In singles play, Zerbini defeated his fourth-straight ranked player as he dropped a 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 win on No. 68 Jay Goldman at the top court. He is now 8-3 at the top singles court and 10-4 in all duals. He leads the team with a 19-6 singles record this year.

Q+A with Women’s Water Polo Player
BERKELEY – With a father who won a national title in men’s water polo at California and competed on the Olympic team, two cousins on the men’s water polo team and a sister who was a women’s soccer student-athlete at Cal, redshirt junior utility Stephanie Schnugg comes from a family rich in Cal history. But this Schnugg has already set her own course. As a true freshman, she scored 10 goals and had 10 goals in her sophomore campaign, taking a year to redshirt in between. This season, she has already surpassed both of those totals with 19 goals thus far in 2009. CalBears.com took some time to find out more about growing up in the Schnugg family as well as her interest in art, which is her major.
CalBears.com: If you could snap your fingers and appear somewhere else, where would it be?
SS: Nepal, Spain or Peru.
CalBears.com: Your dad won a national title on the men’s water polo team at Cal, your sister Julia played soccer here and your cousins Bryan Schnugg and Charlie Steffens are sophomores on the men’s water polo team – did your family history with Cal influence your decision to come here?
SS: Surprisingly, no it didn’t. When I first started looking at schools, Cal was at the bottom of my list. I wanted to go somewhere far from home (well, further from home than Berkeley) because I grew up in the East Bay and really wanted to experience someplace new. I also didn’t want to come to Cal because I wanted to make a name for myself. However, after my recruiting trip, I absolutely knew that this is where I wanted to be for the next four (or five) years of my life. After being here for four years, I’ve realized that I love being close to home, my family, and am so proud to be at a university where so many of my relatives have gone and go!

Men’s Water Polo team very academic:
BERKELEY, CALIF. – Juniors Mike Sample (3.26, interdisciplinary studies) and Scott Cruikshank (3.14, interdisciplinary studies), sophomore Brian Dudley (3.42, business administration) and redshirt freshman Charlie Steffens 3.35, undeclared) were all honored by the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches for their academic achievements during the 2008 season, it was announced recently. Dudley was placed in the Superior class with a GPA between 3.41-3.70; while Sample, Cruikshank and Steffens were members of the Excellent class with GPAs between 3.20-3.40.
Dudley was this past season’s leading scorer among the academic honorees, scoring 28 goals with 35 steals, 24 ejections earned and 14 assists. On Nov. 17, he was selected the MPSF Co-Player of the Week after leading the Bears to victories over Long Beach State and UC Irvine, notching the match-winning goal in sudden death overtime at Long Beach State. Next leading scorer among the academic standouts was redshirt freshman Steffens, who scored 18 goals with 25 assists, 20 steals, 10 ejections earned and three field blocks. Sample added 13 goals with 26 assists, 19 steals, 16 ejections earned and four field blocks. Cruikshank had five goals with 18 steals during the ’08 campaign.
The 2008 Cal men’s water polo team also has the distinction of having the highest team GPA of any of the Golden Bears’ men’s varsity sports with a 3.245 GPA during the fall semester. With the impressive team GPA during the fall, Kirk Everist’s squad is now tops among all of Cal’s men’s sports with a cumulative team GPA of 3.162. The Bears were ranked sixth nationally with their team cumulative GPA.

that's what everyone says
and to be fair, you’re probably not going to use History of Eastern Europe (good class!) too much in your future career. But that’s not the point. Liberal Arts degrees teach you reading, writing, and critical thinking skills; the subjects you take (history, english classes, sociology, whatever) are just a means for you to develop these skills. So the best thing to do is to take classes in areas which interest you, so you will be engaged with the material and able to cultivate those skills.

It CAN be a legit program of study (for example, Cognitive Science started out as IDS), and I’ve known several IDS majors who legitimately wanted to study something that Cal’s list of degree programs let fall through the cracks, but you’re right, it CAN be kind of a BS major if the faculty adviser doesn’t do their job.

This is why you must learn to, ahem, “compromise”. To compromise, you must let your wife buy whatever she wants, watch whatever she wants and do whatever she wants. What's the most stressful time of the work week for you?
Most workers coast through Monday getting their brain in gear and catching up with gossip from the weekend through social networking sites.
But on Tuesday reality sets in and staff spend the first part of the day going through emails they ignored on Monday before planning the week ahead.

1) Sacramento-San Joaquin River System
Location: California
Outdated water and flood management puts California’s largest watershed at the top of America’s most endangered rivers list for 2009. A recent breach in the delta’s 1,100-mile levee system could have dire effects on surrounding ecosystems, farming and agriculture, commercial fishing and California’s civil infrastructure. State and federal authorities are looking at alternative water-management strategies for the river system, which serves 25 million Californians and more than 5 million acres of farmland.

we do have the advantage of having the sierra’s right there. They should get plenty of snow melt to support an extensive irrigating program. But it is interesting to note that with a state of around 35 million people, 85% of our water is used for agriculture. Even MORE interesting to note, is compared to other Western states this percentage is LOW!
They're after our precious bodily fluids
Your point isn’t lost… but “desert” is simplistic. Large sections of the valley, including way down in places like Kern County that are quite dry and arid now, were vast malarial swamps prior to our arrival and interference. The now-dry soils are fertile because of this recent wetlands past.
You are correct, “desert” isn’t the right word, but there certainly wasn’t enough water for crops to depend solely on rainfall. Some areas tended to be seasonal swamps…they would flood in spring with the snowmelt and then dry up the rest of the year. Some areas had no water at all. The CVP basically built tons of reservoirs and canals so we had way more control over how and when that water was used. This allows for farming year round.
Blockquote Ambassador For Hire

I know…looking at the aquaduct…it makes one wonder…did they know what they were doing at the time, or where they just obsessed about supplying 25% of the nation’s food and deliver water to SoCal? It’s a little frightening, especially because our delicious salmon population is dying off.

normally, when a comment was deleted, all the responding comments — the whole sub-thread — is deleted along with it. however, these couple comments snuck through the cracks, temporarily at least. without a parent comment, SBN didn’t really know what to do with them, so they sort of got posted to the bottom of the page.

what’s interesting is that everyone who was viewing the DBD thread as this all happened temporarily entered a parallel DBD. readers coming late to the party missed the whole thing, but those who kept active threads going could still read and respond to these orphan comments, even after the original comment that started the whole thing was long gone.

Tedford has said fullback is the most wide-open position on the team following the departure of Will Ta’ufo’ou, but he’s been impressed with Will Kapp so far during the spring.
“He’s really done a nice job over the first couple of weeks,” Tedford said. “He has a really good feel for the position.”
Kapp, the son of legendary Cal quarterback Joe Kapp, has emerged along with Brian Holley and John Tyndall as leading candidates for the job so far. Holley has been taking first-team reps recently.
“Evaluation is definitely still in progress, but they are getting better every day,” Tedford said.

Free parenting advice
So my son is 5 years old now and a complete joy. Here’s a few things I learned along the way:
1. Get adept at covering his equipment with a baby wipe while you’re changing his diaper. The first time he pees all over himself, the wall and you because you forgot to cover his boy parts, you’ll remember this and wish you’d listened to me.
2. Boys are naturally cruder than girls. When Jackson was about 3, I was sitting in the next room while he was taking a bath and all of a sudden he started shouting “DADDY! DADDY! MY BUTT HAS A HOLE IN IT!!!!” When you combine that statement with the joy and wonder in his voice at the discovery he had just made… good times. Get used to stuff like that.
3. If you haven’t started buying diapers and formula already, start now and put everything in a closet. It makes for less financial pain down the road and if you have packages that are too small, you can exchange them for larger sizes just about everywhere. Plus, you can never have too much formula. The wife lasted 2 weeks before giving up breast feeding because her nipples were bleeding. Formula is a good thing, especially for women not blessed in the milk production department.
4. After the first month or so, don’t be afraid to let the kid cry. If you pick him up and coddle him every time he opens his mouth, he’ll start doing it for attention and you’ll never have a moment to yourself for the next 18 years. You’ll quickly learn the different “cries” Carp Jr. has- hungry, doesn’t feel well, wants to hear his own voice, etc. They don’t all sound the same, belive me.
5. Don’t let Junior sleep with you. He will never, ever leave your room at night if you don’t establish that early. TRUST me on this.
Congrats, by the way

we’re naming him after our (recently) deceased grandfathers – one from each side of our family.
We like Jack for his first name (after her grandfather) and William for his middle name (after my grandfather).
They we’re both great men and served their country to fend off the Axis both in the Pacific and European theatres. Grandpa Bill was on a U-boat during D-day.
Heaps and Hinder...come on down!
my bad, i thought U-boats were a german specific thing.
odd semi-related story…
a few years after my grandma died, I was looking through some photos of when my grandpa was in WWII (he was stationed in the Phillipines), and he pointed out a photo of a young woman, and says see her, she was my second wife. I was like, what?!? Apparently, during his time in the Phillipines he took a second wife. It lasted as long as his tour. Since, that day I have wondered many times if I have some half-filipino cousins running around somewhere.

U-boat (Unterseeboot) is German for submarine, but I’ve only ever heard it used to refer to German submarines.
That’s a pretty cool story btw.
hmmm…I guess I meant U-shaped boat (flat bottom, front end unloads the troops).

Do the new SBNation policies on posting AP content have anything to do with this?
Rather, Singleton declared AP would “take all actions necessary to protect the content of the Associated Press and the AP Digital Cooperative from misappropriation on the Internet.” Not “copyright infringement,” mind you—they’re doing plenty to protect against that, but “misappropration,” a reference to a little-known legal doctrine that gives news organizations a short-term monopoly on their reporting whether or not it’s copied verbatim.
Whose domicile? OUR DOMICILE!
not to my knowledge
i think it’s just a coincidence. as is my understanding, our deal with the AP has been in the works for a while. it’s part of our overall strategy to increase the reach and legitimacy of the network.

Chad Ford - not a big fan of Patrick Christopher's draft prospects
As seen here:
Patrick Christopher, SG, Jr., Cal*
Christopher is a junior, so it makes sense for him to test the draft waters. But he’ll most likely return for his senior season at Cal. If he stays in the draft, he’s likely to go undrafted.
Still happy over the fact that the Nets signed Ryan Anderson. Now if only they can sign Leon Powe after this year...

Greivis Vasquez, G, Jr., Maryland*
Vasquez had an excellent junior season, but scouts wonder how he would fit in the NBA. Is he a point guard or a 2-guard? Does he have the athleticism to excel in the league? What about his poor shooting numbers this season and his tendency to run his mouth? He definitely has talent, but he’s on the first-round bubble.
In addition, Greivis has definitely been laughed at scornfully.

They would be a wait-and-see in my book. A lot to replace, but all reports are that they have the right pieces to do the replacing. They have Boise State, Utah, and Purdue early, I believe. I think they should be able to beat all of those teams if their new starters play up to potential (funny enough, BCS school Purdue is probably, by far, the gimme of that schedule).
Nothing would be better for Pac-10 publicity than that early Oregon-Cal undefeated matchup with both teams ranked in the low teens or better. That has a VERY solid chance of happening. We can’t look past Maryland and Minnesota either.

As a Duck fan, I fear the hype. Yes Masoli is part Jesus but realistically he’s had five impressive game, one of which (UCLA) he couldn’t throw at all and one (‘furd) he could only kind of throw. He’s already better than Ayoob, which is what I thought as soon as a heard CCSF quarterback, and he’s shown he can run the spread option better than even Dixon. As for the road, it could be tougher. Cal and USC at Autzen help a lot. Boise St.’s a huge opening game.

Mock Draft on WNBA.com
10. Connecticut Sun
Ashley Walker, F/C, California
At this point in the draft, teams may begin to take the best player available, regardless of position. I see the Sun selecting Ashley Walker from Cal at this spot to add depth to their frontline. Walker may be a little undersized to play the power forward at just 6-1, but she has yet to let her lack of height stop her from being effective in the post. She has solid hands and footwork around the basket and knows how to finish.
