NFL Draft Open Thread
This post is for discussing this weekend's NFL Draft. If the thread gets huge on Day 1 we can probably split it into two threads for each day. Any NFL fans wandering by after Cal players get drafted are welcome to comment too!
For Cal fans with NFL allegiances, you're free to speculate about which players your team is interested in, who you believe they should pick, how happy or disgusted you are with your team's picks, and how Mel Kiper's hair could be used as a biological weapon.
For those not terribly interested in where everyone ends up but just that they get drafted, this is one last chance to reminicise about seniors. Which senior will you miss the most? Which senior do you think the Bears will miss the most, based on their importance to the team? And is there anything wrong with the draft profiles on our players?
Here are some brief predictions of where some of our players can go by people (i.e. SBNation NFL blogs) who follow this stuff way more closely than me.
After Alex Mack, the jump takes us to the rest of the players who are in the draft mix and see which fanbases have expressed interest in them (the description is more detailed for Mack since he's the only one going on Day 1; after that it becomes essentially a crapshoot).
Alex Mack (click for Remembering the Seniors profile)
Interviews: Scout, Yahoo Sports
Strengths:
Ideal size and bulk...Extremely smart...Decent athlete with good agility and quickness...Physical and aggressive...Nasty with a killer instinct and always finishes plays...Great technician who understands angles and leverage...Outstanding awareness...Very strong and powerful and is a monster in the weight room...Above average mobility...Hard worker...Tough and durable... Has a lot of experience.
Weaknesses:
Does not have great balance and spends too much time on the ground...A little stiff in the hips...Not real light on his feet...Shorter arms than you'd prefer...Can be too aggressive at times...Will get out of control ... Susceptible to being overwhelmed by massive defenders
Alex Mack, Cal, C: I know some teams prefer Oregon's Max Unger to Mack in part because the Bear spends too much time on the ground. Some of the Pac-10 defensive tackles I've spoken to in the past say Mack was the better player. My hunch is that Mack will start in the NFL for close to a decade. He is a former standout wrestler with great flexibility and more than enough bulk to anchor the middle.
Zack Follett (click for Remembering the Seniors profile)
Interviews: Daily Cal, Scout, Examiner
Strengths:
Very physical with good strength...Reliable tackler...Excellent in pursuit...Does a nice job versus the run...Can take on and shed blockers...Good pass rusher and blitzer...Has a burst to close...Very intense and competitive...A big hitter...Has a non-stop motor...Superb instincts...Hard worker...Tough and durable...Has a lot of special teams potential... Productive and really had a terrific senior campaign.
Weaknesses:
Just average size and bulk...Stiff and not a great athlete...Doesn't play real fast...Has some health and durability concerns...Sub par change of direction skills...Too aggressive at times...Lacks fluid hips...A liability in coverage...Marginal ball skills...Struggles in space ... Limited upside.
Strengths:
Very athletic...Good speed and quickness...Soft, reliable hands...Great body control and ball skills...Decent leaper...Runs good routes...Able to separate..Strong...Is not afraid to work the middle...Still has upside.
Weaknesses:
Just average size and bulk...Isn't very elusive and won't do much after the catch...Questionable instincts and awareness...Isn't much of a blocker...Not real tough or physical...Durability...Limited experience.
Interviews: Yahoo Sports, Cal Bears Examiner, The Football Expert, Daily Cal
Strengths: Decent athlete...Great height and bulk...Extremely long arms and big hands...Strong...Powerful tackler...Stout at the point of attack..Does a nice job in pursuit...Has a non-stop motor...Very tough...Hard worker.Weaknesses: Below average speed and quickness...Is not very explosive and lacks a burst...Raw technician...Not a top pass rusher and repertoire of moves is limited...Durability is a concern...Is older than the average prospect.
Fanbases/teams interested in Rulon: New England, Oakland, Indy, Buffalo (maybe it's just that one fan, fami1y_first who keeps on posting Bears players. Not that I don't mind the coverage...wooo! MORE GOLDEN BEARS IN BUFFALO!)
Worrell Williams (Click for Remembering the Seniors Profile)
Strengths: Good athleticism...Is quick and agile with a burst...Decent bulk and a solid frame...A reliable tackler...Able to deliver the big hit...Good strength...Works through traffic well...Has a great motor...Intense and competitive...Versatile...Durable and experienced...Good bloodlines.Weaknesses: Shorter than you'd prefer...Does not have great timed speed...Lacks fluid hips...Average, at best, in coverage...Questionable instincts and awareness...Is too aggressive at times...Has trouble getting off blocks.
Will Ta'ufo'ou (Click for Remembering the Seniors Profile)
via www.dailycal.org
Sports Illustrated Draft Profile:
POSITIVES: Explosive lead blocker who flashes skill handling the ball. Quick off the snap, accelerates into blocks and fundamentally sound. Displays good footwork in pass protection, picks up blitzes and squares into defenders. Gets out front and creates space for running backs. Works hard to finish blocks. NEGATIVES: Average strength and really does not get much movement run blocking. Looks small for 250 pounds. Rarely asked to handle the ball. ANALYSIS: Ta'ufo'ou is a hard-working fullback who's also been very effective on special teams in college. He has the skill set to find a home as a number two fullback on a roster, and Ta'ufo'ou presents himself as a special teams demon.
Fanbases/teams interested in Will: Cincinnati
Anthony Felder (Click for Remembering the Seniors Profile)
Strengths:
Very athletic...Above average speed, agility and quickness...Excellent strength...Reliable tackler...Outstanding range...Intelligent with great instincts and awareness...Smooth in coverage...Offers some positional versatility...Fantastic work ethic...Lots of experience...Still has upside.
Weaknesses:
Does not have the size that you look for...Has trouble taking on and shedding blockers...Marginal pass rush ability...Isn't a big hitter...Does not make many impact plays in coverage...Durability may be an issue.

A lot of people think Unger will go ahead of Mack because Pittsburgh likes ‘versatility’ in its OLs… I mean, I guess Unger could be your emergency RT, but I find it hard to believe Mack couldn’t play all three interior spots just as effectively. I question the logic of taking the 2nd best C (according to the DLs who have played both) because you believe you may get both your RTs injured in a single game…
STAY THIRSTY, MY FRIENDS
Alsp, you’ll hear it here first: If Knowshon Moreno is gone before Arizona gets to him or trades for him, I’ll predict Mack goes to Zona @ 31 and Unger to Pittsburgh at 32. A million Sanchez to any team that drafts another C over Mack.

I forgot about the draft being tomorrow so I’m going to miss the whole thing. I look forward to see who will be declared Sanchez. Am I correct in assuming there will be an open thread for Sunday’s portion of the draft?
P.S. I’ll just leave this here.

ill turn your 501's into 499's
It’s about time they fixed the OT pass blocking. They really need to add 2 OL vs. 1 DL pass blocking now. Also, they claim the defense under-pursues in the old games, but actually, I find the opposite. I find that the defense wayyy over-pursues which allows for incredibly huge cutback lanes.

anyone else notice that the BearVision screen was missing during the Spring Game?
Is it broken? Are they replacing it? Or just storing it? Where could they actually have the room to store something like that?
So, basically, you gotta Go Bears!
They're replacing it
I think some people were talking about it on BI earlier this year.
Bork bork bork!
Not replacing
There was speculation of that, because there was a screen seen on a truck. But it was really just good (bad) old bearvision being trucked away into storage.
Don’t they remove it for safety every year?

I’m angry after I finally broke down and bought 09 a few weeks ago (after over a year of 08) and found it was basically a copy+paste of 08, only with updated rosters. And the ratings for Cal were horrendous. Jahvid a 78? Bitch please.

DeCoud was good in run support
but he struggled with pass defense until midway through his senior year.
Ezeff was really good as a sophomore in 07 until he got hurt in the Oregon game and never really recovered to his former level of production. Johnson is fine, I think Cattouse has the potential to be really good (he’s only a redshirt soph)

I originally was hoping the Niners would trade down. There were many good players available. But I was listening to KNBR and they were inteviewing the Niners GM and he was saying that there were no bites. So, what can be done?
Also, KNBR seems to hate the raiders. They were just mocking the shit out of them. For DHB, fair enough. But still. They had the Niners GM on after 3 minutes, but never interviewed anybody on the Raiders. Although, to be fair, if they interview anybody but Al Davis, its an excercise in futility.

Cleveland has a solid line now...
First Joe Thomas, who may have been the best overall pick last year, second with Eric Steinbach, and now with Mack. Perhaps another offensive lineman next year, and they can really start doing something special offensively. I could see why they chose Mack, although I’m sure an offensive lineman isn’t as sexy of a pick as a wideout or a qb.

ESPN Pick by Pick analysis on Mack
21. Cleveland Browns (From Philadelphia)
The pick: Alex Mack, C, California
What he brings: Mack displays great strength and comes from a wrestling background, which allows him to play with great balance. He also possess the necessary ability to sink his hips and reset his feet when going up against bigger interior defensive tackles, and he uses his hands very well.
How he fits: This is not a flashy pick, but fills a need with a young player who can grow with the quarterback. Mack is capable of being the point person on an offensive line that already has Eric Steinbach and Joe Thomas. Mack is a player who will likely be an long-time starter in the NFL. This is a conservative pick, but his toughness and strength fit perfectly with the new regime in Cleveland.
I still can't believe the Cardinals made the Super Bowl

Great article about Pat White in ESPN the mag. It was 46 things you don’t know about Pat White (or something like that. That was the general gist of the title). The first 2 and the last 2 were:
Pat White will keep throwing until someone tells him to stop.
No one has told him to stop.

Alex Mack mention Blog from Cleveland's Newspaper
“Mack, who won the academic Heisman last year, will no doubt raise the Sudoku-solving ability of the Browns locker room, but he’s not going to excite the fan base.”
Feel free to vote on there about your thoughts on the pick.

When you have Nnamdi, you don’t need anyone else.
Still happy over the fact that the Nets signed Ryan Anderson. Now if only they can sign Leon Powe after this year...

That pick wasn’t even close to as bad as the DHB one. It is at least close to understandable.

I ain’t gonna be conclusive about any WR… I think what hurt them is that they couldn’t trade backbecause Sanchez was off the board

I wish we had a left tackle
Otherwise Edwards could get abused severely on non Beast Mode plays.

And sign RaShaun as janitor.

Bills can redeem themselves if they draft Morrah or Follett
We need impact players at both positions.
Bork bork bork!
Any idea why Unger slipped so much?
What happened with him? Everyone had him as a top center.
Bork bork bork!
A few.
But Unger was known for his versatility, so he could’ve been adapted to a guard. So that’s why I was a little surprised he dropped.

I know I’m a little late, but damn, that was pretty awful, dreadful and terrible. Taking a player that wasn’t even projected to be drafted in the second round? (I’m talking about the Raiders, of course.) No one can justify taking safety Michael Mitchell at 47th overall. Hell, you couldn’t even make a case for taking him 147th overall. We didn’t even need a safety that badly. Our linebackers and defensive line needed more work than that and players like Connor Barwin and Paul Kruger were sitting right there.

I knew it happen. I knew they would take Heyward-Bey right there over guys like Crabtree, Orakpo, Monroe and Raji. If they wanted him that badly, that’s fine, but they should’ve traded down to grab him. I’m sure somebody was willing to slide into our slot. We could’ve moved down, had our guy and then gotten a pick in the fourth round or something. Taking Mitchell over guys that can hybrid players like Connor Barwin and Paul Kruger is just a terrible, terrible mistake. There is no way that Mitchell is in any way, shape or form better than Michael Huff or Tyvon Branch right now. He never will be.

I don’t think the Raiders could move down once Sanchez came off the board. There was no other player that would command any top 10 money (or really had true value at that spot).
As for the safety, who knows how good he can be? I don’t know if taking a safety was a mistake, but taking him in the 2nd round sure was…

If Michael Crabtree was this “can’t miss” prospect like he was made out to be, someone would’ve moved up to grab him. I guess he wasn’t.

I am sure that there was at least one team willing to move up and it could’ve been any team up until about the 25th pick or so.

There’s been a bunch of debate about what Michael Crabtree is and isn’t (and there’s definitely not a consensus that he’s can’t-miss).
In any case, I think paying top 10 money to any WR who hasn’t played an NFL game is ridiculous.

Why Not Pain Train
If everyone is looking for a pass rusher, who has more TFL? Not a roid pig like Cushing or Rey I’m too busy trying to freak Erin Andrews.

I’m surprised how most people generally did not think much of Rey’s antics towards Erin Andrews. Unfortunately, because Erin Andrews is objectified so much, I think most people didn’t care to go out of their way to say that she was being sexually harassed. The prevailing view seemed to be “oh it’s okay, it’s just Erin Andrews, and Rey is just joking around.” I’m pretty sure most self-respecting women would be upset if a guy came up behind them and pretended to freak/hump her from behind when she wasn’t aware.
