DBD 4.20.09 I'm losing steam
I guess after about 9 months of daily to semi-daily cranking of Daily Bear Dumps, my creative juices are starting to ebb. I have like 6 half-finished DBDs sitting in my drafts. On topics ranging from Japanese pitcher Yu Darvish to an awkward encounter I had at a urinal to that Adam Theis concert Saturday night (Spoiler Alert: It was beyond comprehension. Like. Fuck.)
But they just sit there and I can't finalize them in a way that I feel good about. Maybe I'll be able to do that soon, I don't know. I don't know how one pushes past writer's block. Any tips?
But, if anybody can help with these things going forward, it'd be great. Hydro and Avinash do DBDs and carp has been doing some good work recently. Feel free to roll deep! You don't have to be witty or funny or anything like that. I certainly never was!
Until then, let's get to some Cal links:
BERKELEY - With both sides of the ball creating their own set of highlights, California completed its spring 2009 practice with a final scrimmage before approximately 2,000 fans in Memorial Stadium Saturday.
Going through a series of situational opportunities, the Bears had sessions in almost all facets of the game - kickoffs, field goals, punting and short yardage, as well as late-game and full-field conditions.
"A lot of learning has gone on," head coach Jeff Tedford said. "That's what spring is all about. I was really encouraged by the attitude and work ethic. I think we are doing just fine."
The first set of plays began with the ball placed on the 30-yard-line, and quarterback Brock Mansion led the Cal offense 70 yards down the field in 11 plays. He capped off the drive with a 1-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Alex Lagemann. Mansion was 5-for-5 for 75 yards on the drive, with three of the completions going to Lagemann for 47 yards. Mansion ended the afternoon 8-for-11 for 90 yards with the one TD and an interception.

Post-Scrimmage Quotes:
On the quarterback depth chart going into 2009 fall camp:
“All three (Kevin Riley, Brock Mansion and Beau Sweeney) will get a lot of opportunities. Once we get to camp, we’ll see if they separate themselves.”
On the team’s performance this spring:
“A lot of learning has gone on. That’s what spring is all about. I was really encouraged by the attitude and work ethic. I think we are doing just fine.”
On wide receiver Marvin Jones:
“He did a great job (in spring ball). He probably had the most solid spring of any receiver on the club. It’s nice to see him healthy. Last year, he would have been a strong contributor, but he got hurt. He’s had a great spring this year, and we are really looking for him to make a very strong contribution in the fall.”
On wide receiver Alex Lagemann:
“He’s another one that I really think is going to be in the rotation in the fall. He’s done great things in the spring. It’s nice to see him healthy as well. He’s really always battled injuries here. But now that he’s healthy, he’s doing a nice job catching the football, running the offense and running routes. I really believe he’s going to do a nice job for us.”

Evan Roth wins natchamp on Rings:
MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Senior Evan Roth won his first-ever national championship on still rings at the 2009 NCAA Championships in the individual portion on Saturday evening. Roth notched a 15.600 to take home the title. “This is inexplicable at the moment,” Roth said. “I’ve been working all year for this. This is a dream come true.” Roth’s individual title is the 29th in program history and the 12th in the past nine years at Cal. Roth’s 15.600 tied his career best.
“I wasn’t thinking about winning at all,” Roth said. “I was trying to do another routine and earn my chance to perform. This was just another routine and winning wasn’t the goal. I can’t control winning. I can only control my efforts.”
Seven Bears competed in the events and they combined for nine All-America honors – freshman Glen Ishino and junior Bryan del Castillo on high bar; Ishino on pommel horse; Roth and Kyle Brady on rings; Roth on vault; and Brady, Ishino and freshman Jim Kerry on parallel bars.
“We had an awesome meet,” Cal head coach Barry Weiner remarked of the team’s performance over the past three days. “I’m very proud of the whole team and the effort put forth this year.”
Brady was second on parallel bars with a 15.075, which was just .100 points behind the first-place finisher. Ishino tied for fifth with a 14.575. Kerry took eighth on the event, earning a 14.400.

Rugby in national semis:
BERKELEY – The Golden Bears punched their ticket to the national semifinals Sunday with their 76-10 victory over Cal Poly in the Round of 8 on Witter Rugby Field. California scored 11 tries for the second straight match, with James Bailes notching a hat trick from fullback and scrumhalf Dustin Muhn scoring a pair.
The Bears will face Army May 1 at Stanford, as the Black Knights came back to beat Penn State, 20-19, in the Pool D finale at Life University in Marietta, Ga.
Cal got off to a strong start against the Mustangs and was up two tries before Cal Poly fullback Martine Phelan kicked a penalty to make it 14-3 at minute 15. The Bears were whistled a couple of times for overzealous rucking before Muhn became the recipient of a yellow card at the 29th minute, sending the speedy junior off for 10 minutes and leaving the Bears a man down.
Winger Ryan Taylor switched over to scrumhalf for the first time in his career during Muhn’s absence, and the Bears held Cal Poly at bay while scoring two tries for a +14 advantage while playing shorthanded en route to a 43-10 halftime lead.

The referee declared contested scrums Sanchez
Or else the score against Cal Poly might have been more lopsided?
The underpinnings of the Cal team are superior fitness and speed to go with a swarming defense and crisp offensive execution. Army and BYU have given Cal rugged games in the past, however, and neither Clark nor his players are taking anything for granted.
Cal Poly lost two regulars to injuries in the first half and the referee decided the rest of the game would be played with uncontested scrums, meaning the teams would not bang heads and shoulders as they lined up to secure possession of the ball. It would have been to Cal’s further advantage to play with contested scrums.

I totally don't understand this at all from that article:
“That’s a professional outfit the way they’re handled,” Cal Poly coach Nick Massman said of the Bears. "My kids don’t have that luxury. We trained 1 1/2 months on a tennis court. We train three days a week and do what we can.
I’m sorry but a tennis court?! U can’t tell me the Cal Poly has no empty grass field where the team can practice on? No public park nearby? How do all the tackles and scrums work on a tennis court? This is just crazy.

yeah…I dunno. All those lush grass fields are clogged with fringey spring sports, IM sports, etc. At many schools, rugby is a club sport and, as such, gets the last draw of funds and facilities. My friend at Davis says they practice at a city park, next to the public library. I imagine land in SLO is at a premium, too. Still, one thinks they could find a field at some point in the week.

Womens crew also doing great:
GOLD RIVER, Calif. – California’s third-ranked varsity 8+ defeated No. 2 Stanford and No. 16 Wisconsin in its Group 1 final to propel the Golden Bears to the overall Group 1 victory on Sunday at the Lake Natoma Invitational and wrap up the two-day regatta it co-hosted with Sacramento State. Cal posted a time of 6:20.56 in its varsity 8+ final to Stanford’s 6:29.41 and Wisconsin’s 6:31.85. The Bears won Group 1 with 16 points, followed by Stanford (13) and Wisconsin (7).
The regatta followed a format in which Saturday’s results determined which of the three groups each team competed in on Sunday. The three top point scorers among the teams on Saturday competed in Sunday’s Group 1 races, the next three top point scorers competed in Group 2 and the following three point scorers competed in Group 3.
UCLA tied with Minnesota with 13 points each in Group 2; the teams’ varsity 8+ finish was the tiebreaker and gave the Bruins the overall Group 2 win. The Golden Gophers were second and Tennessee (10 points) was third in Group 2. In the varsity 8+ Group 2 final, UCLA’s 19th-ranked boat (6:33.90) defeated No. 20 Minnesota (6:36.41) and Tennessee (6:40.93) at Lake Natoma, which will also host the Pac-10 Rowing Championships on May 17.

Baseball defeats Oregon:
BERKELEY, CALIF. – The California baseball team got a strong outing from sophomore right-hander Kevin Miller and pounded out 16 hits, including home runs from freshman right fielder Danny Oh, sophomore first baseman Mark Canha and junior second baseman Jeff Kobernus, on the way to an 11-1 victory over Oregon Sunday afternoon at Evans Diamond. Cal, who had defeated the Ducks, 14-1 on Friday and lost, 5-3, Saturday, improved to 18-19 overall and 5-10 in the Pac-10. The Ducks, who prior to this season hadn’t fielded a baseball team since 1981, dipped to 13-23 overall and 3-9 in the conference. The Golden Bears scored at least one run in all but the seventh inning and limited Oregon to four hits.
Miller improved his record to 2-2 by throwing a career-high 7.0 innings with two hits, one run, two walks and four strikeouts. The Ducks got their lone run in the fourth inning when Curtis Raulinaitis led-off with a double, was sacrificed to third base and scored on Colby Sokol’s RBI groundout to second base.
Meanwhile, Cal had a potent offense, scoring in the first inning on Oregon starter Alex Keudell’s (0-3, 2.1 innings, six hits, two earned runs, two walks, one strikeout) wild pitch, a run in the second inning on Oh’s lead-off homer, a run in the third inning on Canha’s lead-off homer and a run in the fourth inning on sophomore shortstop Brian Guinn’s sacrifice fly to center field. The Bears added a run in the fifth inning on junior center fielder Brett Jackson’s RBI single to left field and two runs in the sixth inning on Kobernus’ two-run homer over the left field fence.

Mens Golf finishes 6th:
STANFORD – The Golden Bears hung tough and climbed one spot to finish 6th after the final round of the U.S. Intercollegiate Sunday at Stanford University Golf Course. Michael Jensen led California with his final score of 209 (-1, T21), but it was a team effort to stay in the hunt with no one golfer in the top 20. Washington won the tournament at 36-under, with the Huskies’ Nick Taylor the top individual at 12-under.
“It was one of the strongest fields we played in all year,” said head Coach Steve Desimone. “Overall we played three good, solid rounds, and did a lot of good things. We also beat a number of excellent teams. It was almost stronger than a regional field, which tells you we have a legitimate shot of advancing beyond the regionals to the finals, and that’s exciting.”

Womens Tennis beats Stanford:
The No. 8-ranked California women’s tennis team (17-4, 7-1 Pac-10) turned away rival No. 12 Stanford (17-4, 6-2 Pac-10) in a 4-3 victory today at the Hellman Tennis Complex to finish in second place in the Pacific-10 conference; sending the Cardinal to its worst league finish in school history. The Golden Bears honored seniors Bojana Bobusic, Claire Ilcinkas, and Marion Ravelojaona in pre-match ceremonies for Senior Day.
As the only singles match to go three sets, No. 27-ranked sophomore Marina Cossou found herself down a game in the third when No. 89 Lindsay Burdette forced a deuce before breaking Cossou’s serve. Cossou fought for her own deuce in the second game and broke back as Burdette double-faulted to end game two. Cossou held serve in the third game before breaking Burdette again in the fourth; this time holding her Cardinal counterpart to just one point. Cossou held serve again and broke Burdette once more to claim a 5-1 advantage heading into game seven. Burdette fought off Cossou’s serve to get her second game of the set but Cossou made short work of the eighth game as she went up 40-love. Burdette’s last gasp went into the net to award Cossou with her 20th singles victory of the year, and the Bears with the 4-3 win over Stanford.
Cossou opened her court-two match with a 3-1 lead in the first set, but stumbled to allow her opponent to take a 6-4 win. Down again in the second, Cossou fought her way back to a five-all tie before forcing a decisive tiebreaker. Knotted at five in the breaker, Cossou claimed the final two points to earn a split of the first two sets, 4-6, 7-6(5). Cossou and Burdette opened up their third set just as Carolyn McVeigh finished a 7-6(3), 7-5 win over No. 26-ranked Bobusic at No. 5 singles to knot the team score at three-all.

Womens Water Polo beats CSU Bakersfield:
BERKELEY – The No. 5 California women’s water polo team sealed its 2009 regular season with a 15-10 win over nonconference opponent Cal State Bakersfield on Saturday evening at Spieker Aquatics Complex. The Golden Bears now stand at 30-6 overall while the Roadrunners fall to 17-13.
“It’s the last home game of the regular season and everybody has contributed all season,” California head coach Richard Corso said. “It was good to get everyone involved in the match.”
The teams got to a quick start, each scoring once in the first 65 seconds of play – Cal’s freshman driver Emily Csikos scored first and CSUB’s Amanda Ortiz responded with a goal of her own. Cal’s senior two-meter defender Paige Lorenz was next to score with a lob shot just under the five-minute mark, to bring the score to 2-1. Alyson Moss tied the game at two all with a shot from 10 meters out.
Junior utility Camille Hewko earned a five-meter shot for the Bears, which junior driver Meghan Corso converted with a skip shot to put Cal up, 3-2. Csikos scored her second goal of the game with 1:38 to play in the first period with Corso assisting. Ortiz took a five-meter penalty shot for the Roadrunners to bring the tally to 4-3.
Kellie Goodwin tied the game for the final time with a goal 1:12 into the second stanza, knotting it at 4-4. Csikos started a scoring run for the Bears with a powerful shot on a six-on-five. Next, junior utility Stephanie Schnugg scored as the second drained on the shot clock. Kaitlin Torres got on the board with the assist coming from Moss. Freshman two-meter defender Athina Vazeos scored in set, thanks to a pass from junior utility Julie Oreglia, to send Cal into the halftime break with a 5-7 lead.

Softball loses to Arizona:
The No. 14 California Golden Bears (29-15, 5-7 Pac-10) fell 7-5 to the No. 9 Arizona Wildcats (36-9, 8-2 Pac-10) Sunday afternoon in Tucson. Junior Taylor Kelly hit a fourth-inning grand slam for the Bears.
After falling behind 3-0 in the bottom of the third on a pair of home runs, the Bears took control of the game in the top of the fourth inning. Senior Gina Leomiti started the inning with a single up the middle. Sophomore Sanoe Kekahuna walked, followed by a single through the middle of the infield from freshman Elia Reid to load the bases. Junior Shannon Thomas laced a single to center field to plate a run, leaving the bases loaded with no outs for the reigning Pac-10 Player of the Week, Taylor Kelly. After the Wildcats changed pitchers, Kelly took a 2-1 pitch over the right center wall to put the Bears ahead 5-3.
The first-place Wildcats got one run back in the bottom of the inning, but it was a two-run home run in the fifth that put them back in the lead, 6-5. The Wildcats capitalized on a Cal error in the sixth to score an unearned run, giving them a 7-5 cushion.

Mens tennis loses to Stanford:
The No. 39-ranked California men’s tennis team (10-10, 2-4 Pac-10) suffered a 6-1 setback to rival No. 8 Stanford (18-5, 3-3 Pac-10) to close out the regular season dual schedule today at the Taube Family Tennis Center. Sophomore Bozhidar Katsarov picked up the only singles win for the Golden Bears as he defeated Matt Bruch at court four, 6-1, 6-2, to knot the score at one-all.
Cal got off to a rough start as the Cardinal claimed the doubles point with wins at Nos. 1 and 2 doubles. No. 30-ranked Blake Muller and Richard Wire fought off a strong Cal charge to get the first win of the day with an 8-5 decision over sophomore tandem Jonathan Dahan and Katsarov. At the top court, Bradley Klahn and Ryan Thacher secured the doubles point as the survived every punch thrown by No. 15-ranked senior Geoff Chizever and sophomore Pedro Zerbini to win, 8-6. Cal’s freshman duo of Nick Andrews and Thai Tu took home their ninth win together as they defeated Bruch and Alex Clayton, 8-7, on court three.
Katsarov made short work of Bruch in singles play as he set the Bears up with their first point of the day. The Cardinal responded in kind as No. 122-ranked Wire came off court five with a 6-2, 7-5 win against Tu to put Stanford up, 2-1. Tu stayed the course with Wire in the second set but Wire was able to wrestle away the final two games of the set to earn the match victory. At No. 2 singles, No. 20-ranked Clayton duplicated his set scores with a 6-4, 6-4 win over senior Eoin Heavey, to give Stanford a 3-1 lead.

Cal lost to Arizona on Sat too:
The No. 14 California Golden Bears (29-14, 5-6 Pac-10) lost 11-2 to the Arizona Wildcats Saturday night in Tucson. Valerie Arioto drove in both runs for the Bears.
The Bears fell into a deep hole early when the Wildcats scored eight runs in the bottom of the first off junior starting pitcher Marissa Drewrey. The Wildcats hit a pair of grand slams in the inning to take an 8-0 lead. They added two more runs in the third and one in the fourth off sophomore reliever Valerie Arioto to take an 11-0 lead.
The Bears scored both of their runs in the top of the fifth and final inning. Junior Vernae Sevilla hit a one-out single to left field. After being replaced on the base path by freshman Frani Echavarria, Arioto slammed a home run over the right field wall to plate a pair of runs for the Bears.
Arioto had two of the Bears’ five hits, going 2-for-3, including hitting her eighth home run of the season. Sevilla was 2-for-2. Junior Shannon Thomas had the fifth hit for the Bears. Thomas also logged her 24th stolen base of the season.

Womens soccer players at U23 team:
BERKELEY – Current California women’s soccer players junior midfielder Katie Oakes and sophomore forward Alex Morgan are set to make a trip to Portland, Ore., with the U.S. Under-23 women’s national team. The two Golden Bears will participate in a camp, which will be held April 11-19 and will feature a match against the University of Portland Pilots on April 18 at 7 p.m. at Merlo Field.
The U.S. U-23 WNT head coach Bill Irwin brings the squad to Merlo Field in preparation for a Europe tour later this year. The U-23s schedule looks a slightly different this year with the cancellation of the Nordic Cup, the top competition in the world for this age group. Irwin led the U.S. to its second consecutive Nordic Cup title in 2008 and its 10th in the last 12 years.
The U-23s is the main source of future full National Team players as the majority of the current WNT player pool has been funneled through the U-20/U-23 program. This is the first year that the U.S. U-23 roster features a majority of professional players with 11 of the 18 having been drafted by clubs in the new WPS.
Morgan scored the eventual gamewinner to help the U.S. Under-20 National Team to gold medals at the 2008 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup on Dec. 7 after the U.S. defeated Korea DPR, 2-1. She paced the Bears during the 2008 season with nine goals.

Wilner (I know, I know) on Best’s Heisman chances:
Best, who’s coming off foot surgery, said he expects to be ready not for training camp but for summer workouts, which is a potentially important distinction in at least one respect:
His chances to contend for the Heisman Trophy.
Yes, the ceremony is eight months away, but the Heisman hype machine — so important to the Heisman voting — is ramping up at this very minute.
Let’s take it in reverse chronological order (it’s a rough estimate, but work with me here):
Second Saturday in December: Heisman awarded.
November through first Saturday in December: Heisman determined.
September through October: Positioning for final Heisman push.
August: Pecking order of Heisman candidates established by websites, newspaper reports and TV talking heads.
July: Publication of summer magazines that provide the background material for said websites, newspaper reports and TV talking heads.
March and April: Writing and editing of said summer magazines. (Full disclosure: I write for Lindy’s and The Sporting News but have zero input in the Heisman lists — and do not vote for the Heisman, by the way.)
How it all affects Best:
His ready-for-summer-workouts declaration removed all doubt about his health on the part of magazine editors, who have to make their Heisman/All-American projections this month because of production schedules. (Hey, one of my editors asked about Best’s health recently.)
Basically, the declaration paved the way for Best to be pronounced a first-tier candidate instead of a second-tier candidate, and there’s a big difference.
Article on new Cal commit Tyler York (Reno Gazette Journal):
He will first gray shirt this upcoming season and enroll in the spring. He will have four years eligibility, as well as a redshirt season, available beginning with the 2010 season.Sounds like he’ll be on defense:
York took an official visit to the Berkeley campus last weekend. If all things had been equal, York would have preferred to play running back but the opportunity to play at Cal was too much to pass up.
“Now that this has happened I am so relieved,” said York, who got the attention of the Cal coaches be sending them a highlight film. “But I still have a lot of work to do before I get there,”
According to Scouts, Inc., York has the frame to bulk up from current his current weight of 190 pounds to 210 pounds.
“We like this kid’s energy and aggressiveness as a football player on both sides of the ball,” Scouts, Inc. says on ESPN.com. “… Fills hard and fast when attacking vertically. Displays good chase speed and adequate range with his longer-stride in run support. Does not stay blocked for long when pursuing through traffic and closes on ball carriers strong as a tackler.”

For Best to win it, I think we need an Unthinkable season to happen or making the Rose Bowl without USC and Oregon embarrassing themselves. Anything less won’t be enough to surpass the 3 qb’s, imo

I guess the Unthinkable season is 12-0 with a Rose Bowl appearance.
I’ve said before 12-0 Cal won’t surpass 13-0/12-1 Florida/Texas/OU to make the MNC game.
Heaps and Hinder...come on down!
I don’t know if Best would have much of a shot even with a Rose Bowl appearance, unless he puts up numbers even more obscene than we’re expecting.

well, to get them to the Rose Bowl he’ll get his numbers. The only thing he can do is make sure his team wins, and he doesn’t flop on national TV.

I mean that he would need better numbers than an RB at a program like USC or Florida or whatever in order to have the same chance of winning the Heisman.

Not sure about that....
if we are 12-0, $c is 11-1….that’s two bcs games. IF the sec winner has one loss, and the big 12 winner has one loss….I think we back into it. Especially if the Big 10 winner is OSU.

yeah, maybe with 12-0 Cal, 11-1 SC, and 11-1 tOSU. Also, you said SEC/Big12 winners. Here, I’m narrowing this to Florida/LSU and Texas/OU (the biggest of the big boys). The hype train will be in full effect for those programs – especially those with the flashy qb’s.
The biggest reasons I think Cal would get hated on is that they could very well play only two Top 25 teams the entire year (so Oregon & USC need to have 10+ win seasons) and the Pac10’s image.
Heaps and Hinder...come on down!
No, that would never happen.
If BCS team #1 is undefeated and BCS team #2 has one loss (and they’re both conference champions), BCS team #1 will 99% go to the NC game over BCS team #2, even if it’s an SEC team or a Big XII team.
JAI HO!
while generally that’s a nice credo, applied to the teams I’m talking about (their hype, players, etc) and the scenario I’m envsioning (USC/Oregon underwhelming, rest of Pac10 sux) I think it could happen.
Heaps and Hinder...come on down!
I agree to pass them up we need 12-0

heh, woah, I didn’t go that far!!!
I am against the weekly starter flip/flop – and it’s positiong itself to be yet another “who’s the QB?” season. If he waits until the end of July/early August, that’s okay…but I think he won’t.
Just cause he does something I disagree with doesn’t mean he’s not smart!

Not naming a starter in April to weekly starter flip/flop.
I am the Tyrant Boy King Of UC Eugene! An endless cavalcade of worthless inanities is my currency!

well, it’s the latter that’s the real issue in terms of repetitions/cohesiveness.
the more the practice Riley gets with real players (the 1’s) the better off he’ll be. the sooner this happens the better, imo. Certainly, the longer this prolongs into the fall camp/season, the worse off he’ll be.
And yes, I think we’re headed down a weekly starter flippy/floppy trail.
Heaps and Hinder...come on down!
Aren’t you sort of going around this backwards?
Riley is to be the fall QB, so we need to get him as many reps as possible now, so let’s name him the starter so he gets all the reps with the ones.
But what if we don’t know who the fall QB is to be?
I am the Tyrant Boy King Of UC Eugene! An endless cavalcade of worthless inanities is my currency!
www.CaliforniaGoldenBlogs.com
To be clear, I’m okay with waiting until 1/4th to 1/2 of the way through fall camp…but not later. and certainly not week by week in the season.
I’m fine with what they did in the spring!
Now that it is over, I think we go with Riley.
Why? Well, none of them played like an All American. Since all 3 produce equivalently, most coaches will go with the more seasoned starter until said starter drops the ball.
For Mansion or Sweeny to win, they’d need to statistically outperform Riley by a significant margin, since Riley now has experience and does the little things well (I assume) that Tedford likes. Maybe he doesn’t do these well, but my guess is that it’s a learned skill and he now knows how to do this.
My main point: In the “fall” (which is what, end of July to September 4th?) we need to find out who are 1’s are ASAP. This includes FB, 1st & 2nd TE, top 2-3 WRs, and QB. The longer this drags on at each position, the less likely they hit the field as a finely tuned passing attack. If this continues into the season at these key positions, things will not be good. I think this is the biggest issue of this team in 2009.
Cal’s now amassed a lot of quality players, but to excel against the elite Cal NEEDS a passing attack and that will only happen by not rotating a bunch of players in at each key position for the entire season.
Heaps and Hinder...come on down!
But what does that have to do with the A-11 offense?

The defense generally dominated spring practices and this unit could end up as the best in the Pac-10, despite the loss of three of four starting linebackers. As for the LB corps, the plot may thicken there when a trio of touted JC transfers arrives in the fall, led by Ryan Davis.

Bears are first to offer OG Chris Adcock from TX:
Offensive guard Chris Adcock, recently added to the ESPNU 150 Watch List, has received his first scholarship offer from the Cal Bears after attending a junior day on campus.
“Cal is a great offer,” he said. “I can definitely see myself having a great college career as a Golden Bear.”
Adcock mentioned that several other BCS-conference programs such as Kansas State, Arkansas, Oklahoma State, Wake Forest, Arizona, Texas Tech, Northwestern, Kansas and Minnesota are showing interest.
Non-BCS schools such as San Diego State, UNLV, Colorado State, Louisiana Tech, Houston, TCU, UTEP, Tulsa, SMU and New Mexico are also recruiting the talented junior.Anyone know how this guy isn’t drawing interest from Texas/OU/LSU?
A solid pass protector that stops the pass rusher dead in his tracks making him restart. Very consistent at the quick set up and drop back protection. Displays excellent patience on the deep set and waits for the rusher to come to him before delivering the blow; doesn’t get overextended. Impossible to power rush due to size and strength. Adcock is a very good offensive lineman that can be a major player at the guard position where he can have a little protection on both sides. He is strong and very fundamentally sound along with being an exceptional run blocker at the point of attack.Recruitniks may have already mentioned this guy…what’s the scoop on him? How is he THAT good but the traditional local powerhouses pass on him?

He goes to a TAPPS school
I’ve mentioned this before but TAPPS competition is generally atrocious. Same level of competition as the schools Brock Mansion and Justin Forsett attended. I’m wondering what the criteria for the ESPN 150 watch list is as it would be difficult to evaluate him as a player (presumably he is steamrolling everyone in front of him. Lots of 180 lb D lineman in TAPPS.

Its a nice to have but outside of your family, no one really cares.
TAPPS= Texas Assoc. of Private and Parochial Schools. Think Salesian or lower in terms of level of competition. Jahvid tore up that level and has proven to be a superior college player but not many of his contemporaries are any good. So TAPPS does produce an occaisional player of quality but just not that often and I cant remember the last time that Texas took a TAPPS player. The 2 TAPPS powerhouses (Dallas Jesuit and Houston Strake Jesuit) moved to the public system for sports because they destroyed everyone they faced.
I looked at his size and at 300 lbs, he’ll probably be facing guys half his size with some regularity. I went at looked at their schedule and didn’t recognize a single team on there. Not good. That said, he looks to have some real measurables so presumably thats what the coaches are offering him on.

TWO FUTURE BEARS STANDOUT AT LA NIKE CAMP
The Hanta Virus takes home LB MVP Honors
Linebacker: Cecil Whiteside (Newport Beach Calif./ Newport Harbor)
The linebacker group ended up being very solid and Whiteside was the guy the coaches came away raving about. The Cal-commit is an excellent athlete with a great frame and motor. He was in the top two or three linebackers in every drill, including the one-on-one pass rush drill and the one-on-one coverage. In fact, it was his ability to cover the backs out of the backfield that sealed the deal for Whiteside to take home MVP honors.
Cassius Marsh gets high praise

What a coincidence. I’m not a camper. But the idea of camping got into my head as a great thing to do on a 3 day weekend, especially since wifey was gonna be out of town.
But can’t seem to convince anyone else that its a good idea.

I had mixed feelings on the movie. It got an absurdly high mark on rottentomatoes.
Good storyline, had some good moments, but it wasn’t the Superbad / Role Models type comedy I expected.

Agree, my wife thought the same thing. I liked it better than she did but agree it could have been better. It’s certainly not a comedy first, more like a drama with some funny stuff and quirky characters sprinkled in.

Ayoob/Longshore did their best…they did not need to get booed.
Weren’t they getting a bunch of shit while on campus from their own classmates?
Heaps and Hinder...come on down!
Boller reportedly always wore his hood over his head to not be recognized when the team was going 1-10 in 2001. Ayoob was booed and dissed everywhere he went – on campus and at games. Longshore was booed and dissed too. I heard people seriously wishing Longshore got injured. I’ve heard stories of both Longshore and Ayoob being ridiculed to their face by students on campus. It’s a shame.
www.californiagoldenblogs.com
I heard one story where somebody asked Ayoob if he was the QB. He acknowledged that he was. Then the student laughed at him and said “you fucking suck.” There was also a story relayed to the public via Tedford of Longshore being confronted on campus by another student who reported told him he sucked and was a horrible QB.
In the student section in 2007, “FUCK YOU LONGSHORE!” and people muttering “I hope he gets injured” were dime a dozen.
I know a lot of Cal fans are passionate about the team and winning but that doesn’t excuse them from: (a) confronting players on campus and putting them down with face to face insults and humiliation; or (b) wishing physical harm on the player so he won’t be in the game.
www.californiagoldenblogs.com
I believe there have been similar disparaging remarks at USC concerning John David Booty, at Texas concerning Colt McCoy, at Ohio State concerning Troy Smith. It is the fate of the student-athlete QB at a division I school, to say the least.
Not that it hasn’t been bad, but I doubt it’s been the worse here.

Odds are that anyone who is legitimately passionate about Cal football would know enough about football/be respectful enough to refrain from comments like that. And, although Avi disagrees with me, I think the reason why Longshore is hated more than Ayoob was because Ayoob had a sort of innocence about himself. He came across as this kid who really was trying his best but wasn’t quite cutting it. On the other hand, Longshore, came across to many of his haters, as a guy who wasn’t trying his best. Furthermore, he also sort of fought back from the general Cal fan impression that he was at fault for all those INTs. I mean, he wasn’t completely at fault for all those INTs, but if you asked the average Cal fans, they thought he was 100% at fault for all of them. So because of the fact that Longshore sort of came across as denying full fault, he became even more of a villain in the eyes of Cal fans because it seemed like he wasn’t accepting responsibility for what was happening.
www.californiagoldenblogs.com
I think also Longshore had a knack for throwing that terrible interception at the wrong time. Ayoob just sucked. WIth Longshore wed be RIGHT in it and then lose at the last second. Its more painful than being out early a la Ayoob. So, people’s frustrations grew even more.

Most criticized players in recent CAL history?
This Ayoob/Longshore discussion made me wonder. (And I’ve decided to use “criticized” rather than “hated.”)
Ayoob and Longshore weren’t the first (and won’t be the last) to be lambasted by Bear Nation. We in Bear Nation have criticized players on teams not nearly as good as the ones Ayoob and Longshore played on.
To wit,
Kyle Campanelli (basketball, early 90s) – the fans were brutal to this kid. A lot of it had to do with him being the coach’s son. But Kyle didn’t deserve the treatment he got.
Ryan Jamison (basketball early to mid 90s) — The Harmon crowd was pretty brutal to Jamo, too.
Justin Vedder (QB, 1997-98) — Until Ayoob came along, I thought Vedder was the most criticized QB, if not the most criticized football player at any position, during my CAL fandom.
Kyle Boller (QB, 1999-2002) – Since he didn’t live up to “Jesus in Cleats,” he was an easy target for the fans.
Anyone else we’ve brutalized?
Marshawnthusiastic Jahvidtician and member of the PRileytariat.
The only guy I have pretty much openly criticized is Theo. Its not like I was angry, merely disappointed.

oooh poor jamo
When he got out of Berkeley (and the Pac-10) he was a servicible center. He had an amazing game in Orlando against Cincy (the 7-Up challenge) and was the only player playing well against Wisconsin Green Bay when Bozeman inexblicably took him out.
He was crticized because he was kind of soft, and would make these great post moves, then miss the easy layup and never dunk. But once he got away from Harmon he forgot about the crowds and played . . .well okay.
I felt badly because he was the #1 volleyball player in the country and could have gone anywhere to play volleyball.
he also was in one of the greatest episodes of Bear Territory with Chris and Steve. “I’m not just here because I’m tall . . .am I?”

According to circumcision FAQ, that might not be a prudent reason:
#
Hygiene
The foreskin is easy to care for and the intact penis is easy to keep clean. The foreskin usually does not fully retract for several years and should never be forced. When the foreskin is fully retractable, boys should be taught the importance of washing underneath the foreskin every day.
Gently rinsing the genital area while bathing is sufficient. Harsh soap and excessive washing can irritate the penis, which can lead to inflammation of the glans (balanitis). 24
Smegma is a white waxy substance, consisting of natural secretions and shed skin cells, that may occur around the folds of the genitalia in both males and females. In the past it was feared that smegma might be carcinogenic (and this fear was used as a justification for circumcision), but this fear has been disproven. Good general hygiene and common sense are key to preventing infection.

I doubt passions are so high about circumcision that it could lead to the sort of 400 post sub-thread flame war like a politics discussion could. It’s not really the political arguments that are bad, it’s more the extreme potential that stems from political discussions. I do not see a similar potential here.
However, since people seem deadset against me having a serious, legitimate argument at some point here, I’ll stop.

That’s a straw man. I’m questioning how your having a serious, legitimate, graphic debate about circumcision is not worse than a political discussion in terms of making CGB accessible to new posters/lurkers/etc.
Political discussions are discouraged here not because they might not makie CGB accessible to new posters/lurkers/etc.
But because, previously, they were easily and often-times leading to 400 comment sub-threads that were giant slapfights/flame wars. Those sort of things are not desireable here for a variety of reasons that have nothing to do with new lurkers.
So, let’s keep separate things separate here.

Well, firstly, it’s wildly unlikely to offend somebody deeply with a 400 comment honkfest.
Secondly, while you might chafe at the fact that you can’t discuss politics here, I also have held my tongue a lot to respect your concerns.
Thirdly, what is this 400 comment honkfest that you speak of? Is it in the DBD the other day when there was a HUGE discussion of housing around campus? Is it in the DBD the other day when there was a HUGE discussion of the NFL Draft and Mark Sanchez? Although the first is more Cal-oriented than a discussion of, say, circumcision, I don’t necessarily see much of a difference as far as either a)leading to a flame war or b)being a honkfest.
You keep making a big deal out of this “honkfest.” Can you please clarify your term. Is it literally, in your mind, just an inane series of meme references? If so, I honestly can’t remember the last time we had one of those. If ever. Can you provide an example of a 400 comment honkfest, so we have a better appreciation of your concerns?

First and foremost, they honk their horns – or beat their drums, or wave their flags – to enliven and embolden their audience. Members vary widely in age, class, ethnicity and background, and although they often wear some kind of uniform, there is also always an emphasis on individuality and a "DIY" (do-it-yourself) sensibility to their instrumentation and attire. These bands play music that is by, for, and of "the people." The distinction between performer and audience, just like the distinctions between different musical genres, is just one more arbitrary social boundary they aspire to overcome. Spectators often think "Hey, I could do that!" and, indeed, these bands often recruit new members right off the street.

Just want to make sure I’m following you here…you’re saying political discussions are bad because they are too divisive?
circumcision conversations are divisive too…..circumcision divided my foreskin from my schlong….

So that’s what Bush meant when he said “I am a uniter, not a divider!!” He was merely clarifying that he is not, in fact, a mohel. Suddenly the last 8 years make sense…

It is not as much that political/religious discussions are too divisive per se. However, they are more likely to quickly become divisive, more so than a discussion of a)places to live in Berkeley, b) the NFL draft, or c)circumcision.
In more recent times, things have been much better. However, previously, it was not always like that. I am very thankful that participants in political discussions have become more aware of the potential pitfalls and have worked to control themselves.
Hopefully, this discussion is helpful also. Although, to be fair, this discussion in and of itself is, most likely, brutally annoying to even the most hard-core readers, I am assuming!

Well, perhaps previously due to religious reasons or lax personal hygiene, circumcision was the way to go. But, unless you have strong religious views on it, I just don’t see the reason to mutilate your son. The cleanliness factor has been decreased in modern times.

Snip, for sure. My roommate at Cal had to get snipped for medical reasons (some kind of infection because his parents never educated him on how/why to keep his schlong clean)….so he had to get snipped at the age of 20…..he was out of commission for 2 months. Get the baby snipped now and he’ll never have to deal with stigma of getting snipped later in life.

what about this!
Medical grounds for circumcision that are most commonly cited are: Reduced risk of urinary tract infections (UTI); reduced risk of penile cancer; reduced risk of cervical cancer in partners; reduced risk of sexually transmitted disease (STD).
penile cancer…FTW!

I don't know anything about Miss America Pageants
But it is serious BS that Miss California got asked this question. Perez Hilton is such a provoking douche.

He was driving an agenda. Because she expressed a belief the judge disagreed with, she lost. And how can you expect a pageant girl to be current about political issues.

A lot of pageant girls are concerned about what goes on in The Iraq.

by just saying something along the lines of: I’m glad that voters are deciding the issue in California. Go democracy!
I wish she wasn’t from California. I prefer my state representatives to be a bit more progressive. WOO POLITICS!

Buster Sports ranks Pac10 defensive tackles:
9. Derrick Hill, California: Often an overlooked position at California because of its 3-4 scheme, it’s the job of the Bears’ nose tackle to take on blockers and let the linebackers make plays. Hill came to California with some promise, as most Pac-10 schools ‑ including USC ‑ offered a scholarship. The senior-to-be struggled with a balky knee early in his career, but was a mainstay throughout 2008. With Cal ushering in a new set of linebackers in 2009, look for the Bears to count on Hill to become more of a leader and playmaker.Feels a little low, doesn’t it?

Bruce Feldman says Mack is the 7th most underrated player in the draft.
Alex Mack, Cal, C: I know some teams prefer Oregon’s Max Unger to Mack in part because the Bear spends too much time on the ground. Some of the Pac-10 defensive tackles I’ve spoken to in the past say Mack was the better player. My hunch is that Mack will start in the NFL for close to a decade. He is a former standout wrestler with great flexibility and more than enough bulk to anchor the middle.
Whose domicile? OUR DOMICILE!
It’s kinda why they voted Mack the winner of that award…. and not Unger

Men’s Bball team hands out its end-of-year awards.
Junior guard Jerome Randle, who averaged 18.3 ppg and 5.0 apg, was named MVP, and backcourt mate Patrick Christopher won the Pete Newell Coach’s Award. Both players were named to the 10-man all-Pac-10 first team.
Randle also was went home with hardware for Best Free Throw Percentage (86.3 percent), took the Jason Kidd Award as the team’s assist leader and was honored as a team captain with Theo Robertson.
Jamal Boykin was recognized for Highest Field Goal Percentage (53 percent) and took the Darrall Imhoff Award as the leading rebounder (6.4 rpg).
Jordan Wilkes won the Senior Award and freshman guard Jorge Gutierrez claimed the Defensive Player of the Year.
Whose domicile? OUR DOMICILE!
Jordan Wilkes winning the Senior Award is like Nikola Knezevic winning a participation award.
So, basically, you gotta Go Bears!

My freshman year, I lived in Foothill Building 8, on the top floor, where I could literally walk right outside and see the Greek Theater stage. If you get up on the roof of the building, you can get an even better view. Saw Live and the Counting Crows play there that year. Good show, I thought; wasn’t disappointed by either band.
So, basically, you gotta Go Bears!
I think Mr Jones is a tough song to do live, by any band.
I love the Greek. I like standing at the top, although it can get quite medicinal for my taste.
the crows are definitely at home there…

Mr. Jones was a better song in the recent acoustic-ish live configuration that I heard than it ever was on the radio.
It was pretty sweet when they played it on lower sproul

Remember, the enemy's end zone is DOWN!
oftentimes
we used to go up on the hillside behind the Greek to catch concerts – saw Sting (girlfriend’s choice) there.
Pearl Jam, Helmet, Primus, and Bob Dylan were in the theatre themselves though.
