NHL Playoffs Open Thread

I know we have a number of hockey fans hanging around, so here's a place where we can talk privately, away from the inanity of everything else.  My Pens go for a 2-0 series lead tonight against the chippy Flyers (ok, that is being redundant).  Tough loss for the Sharks last night, Ehrhoff's shot off the crossbar was a beauty that just missed.  And nice win for the Blackhawks in the first OT game of the playoffs.

They didn’t show that much grit. Anaheim is one of the top 2 most physical teams in the league. They will wear the Sharks down in 7 games. The Sharks don’t have the physicality to do it. The Penguins are playing the other most physical team in the league, but they: have been there before, and having 2 of the top 3 players in the league doesn’t hurt (which the Sharks do not have. Thornton is maybe top 10 definitely top 15)

At best, the Sharks lose in the Western Conference finals to Detroit. But if they escape this series they have the young legs of Chicago most likely next.

That's odd

I’m a Sharks fan and all of my friends and I are shit scared.

Although realistically, I agree with CBKWit. After taking a step back and looking at the game, it wasn’t too disastrous. We got pucks to the net from the point, it’s a matter of our forwards getting the deflections and loose pucks on the rebounds to clean up. But nevertheless, all of us are pretty worried at this point, because a repeat performance on Sunday means HUGE trouble.

Hey now! We are getting out of the first round! Then losing to the buzzsaw that is Detroit in 6

Toot Toot

by rollonubears on Apr 17, 2009 1:59 PM PDT up reply actions

if im not mistaken, in nhl playoffs there’s no bracket-type matching that predetermines the second/third round matchups like in bball (i.e. its not necessarily 2/7 vs. 3/6 in the second round). I think the top remaining seed always plays the bottom remaining seed, at least thats how it used to be. So if ducks beat sharks then we’ll get the wings in round 2. that frightens me, despite the fact that we beat the wings the last two times we played them in the playoffs (‘03, ’07). I still think Teemu Selanne’s OT goal in game 5 of the 2007 Western finals against the wings is the most important goal in ducks history.

by ava1anche69 on Apr 17, 2009 2:47 PM PDT up reply actions

Wait, I knew that before but hadn’t thought about what it means in terms of the Sharks losing. So if the Sharks lose, than Vancouver avoids Detroit for at least one more round! THANK YOU JESUS!!!!

Good game by Flyers, not a great effort by the Pens. Malkin has a wicked shot, but pretty poor back-checking by most of the forwards and Sid missed a wide open net. Giving up a shorthanded goal is inexcusable; have to play better on Tuesday, Pens!

I disagree

I thought they played really well today. They played like crap in Game 1, but today they had some dynamite scoring chances and just couldn’t finish. The shots statistic is deceiving, I agree, but they got a bunch of second chance opportunities and some good shots from the slot. This is one of those games where they controlled the flow of the game but just couldn’t finish it off. If they play like this in the other games, I think they’ll do fine. The problem is, there’s no margin for error now.

by Sharkbit12 on Apr 19, 2009 10:19 PM PDT up reply actions

This game was far more important than game 1. They had to show that they were in control and the other game was just a fluke. The Ducks smell blood and are definitely in the driver’s seat. When the number 1 seed can’t even split at home then they are in trouble.

Toot Toot

by rollonubears on Apr 20, 2009 12:56 PM PDT up reply actions

They're definitely in trouble

and there’s probably a 75% chance that they don’t make it past the first round. But I can see them putting together a string of strong performances to get right back in the series.

When the number 1 seed can’t even split at home then they are in trouble.

True, it’s not a good sign and it rarely happens. But the last time it happened? The 2002 Stanley Cup Playoffs, when #1 Detroit lost their first two games to #8 Vancouver at the Joe, only to come back and win the series and the Stanley Cup that year.

That’s why as bleak as it looks right now, I’m encouraged by some of the things I saw last night. The main concern I have is the Power Play, we won’t win unless we get that going. But until we lose our fourth game of the series, I won’t give up hope.

by Sharkbit12 on Apr 20, 2009 2:18 PM PDT up reply actions

But was Detroit playing at least alright when they lost to Vancouver those 2 games?

Your power play is ghastly. Nabokov played well last night but needs support.

Toot Toot

by rollonubears on Apr 20, 2009 2:42 PM PDT up reply actions

No, they weren't

First game was an overtime game which you could have chalked up as a fluke if you wanted. But second game = 5-2 Vancouver…not even close. You could make the argument that they had won it before 5 years earlier so their team had the experience necessary to overcome adversity, whereas the Sharks consistently choke. I don’t really have a refutation for that though lol.

by Sharkbit12 on Apr 20, 2009 2:58 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah. The Sharks, in a way, want to become the Ducks. They try to be physical. They sign Lemeiux (not even gonna bother looking that up). They trade for physical Ducks players. They made moves with the Ducks in mind obviously, because they were worried about playing the most physical team. And they were right about worrying.

Well, usually I have to carve time out of my activities to watch sports, so I’m really only gonna do that if I’m invested in the team. I have a hard time forcing myself to set aside 3 hours for the Ducks vs Devils.

Good point. Ducks vs. Devils was 03 though.

Oh ok. I thought you were using my example though, which also involved the Ducks. My bad.

I was pissed they won today. Now I’m going to have to suffer a hearbreaking loss in either game 6 or 7.

Yeah. I think it may have been better in the long run if they had lost last night. 6 games looks a lot better than 5 games. And that isn’t good for the sharks.

Vancouver does get my best wishes

Since I can’t stand Detroit or Anaheim. I hate Anaheim more so I hope that Detroit beats them, and then Vancouver takes care of Detroit.

yeah, bad ending to a good regular season

I thought the sharks could do some damage this year but Anaheim was clearly the better team. Such is the NHL playoffs.

Everyone’s facebook status involved the Sharks. I offered an invitation to the Canucks bandwagon on each one.
