DBD 4.17.09 Best of CGB: What Do I Eat On Gameday?
Another best of CGB feature gets to the meaty side of gameday Saturday....literally.
We've already talked about favorite restaurants at Cal, but I somehow doubt most of you are chowing down at Gregorie's and Fonda three hours before kickoff.
We've discussed where you tailgate, but not explicitly how you tailgate. What are your special tailgating recipes for gameday?
If you're not tailgating, where exactly does your stomach take you before and after gameday? And is there anything we should try out at the Memorial conveniences?
The opinions expressed in a FanPost are, in every way, reflective of the opinions of every California Golden Blogs Marshawnthusiast. Moreover, they are reflective of every employee of SBNation, including Tyler "Blez" Bleszinski.

Pac-10 gets street cred for ground game
Pac-10 finds success by staying grounded
Last season, six Pac-10 teams ranked among the nation’s top 50 in rushing offense; that’s three more than in 2006. Talented running backs, injured quarterbacks and coaching philosophy are contributing factors in the spike in rushing success.
California’s Jahvid Best, who rushed for 1,580 yards last season, is the most explosive running back in the country.

I don't think anyone posted this yesterday
After two years not playing due to injury, Lagemann is finally getting quality play time.
It’s frustrating, but I keep thinking that you have to love the sport to be here, and I do," said Lagemann, who was rated as the 49th-best receiver in the country by scout.com coming out of Saratoga High. “Even if I did have to wait a couple of years, it’s worth it because I’m having the time of my life right now.”
Lagemann may have had a better chance to avoid the scout team and immediately join the offense last season, but the team had some difficulty diagnosing his injury. Initially, the Bears thought it was a stress reaction. But it turned out to be a fracture that required surgery. Lagemann didn’t end up having the operation until the end of the 2007 season.
Lagemann was expected to be out about six months, but he incurred some complications during his rehabilitation and missed all of last season’s training camp. Doctors told him that some athletes never recover from this type of injury, but he was finally cleared to play during the first week of the season.
“I lost some confidence,” Lagemann said. “But I had a few meetings with Coach (Jeff) Tedford, and he said I could play. I just had to go out there and have fun. As soon as I talked with him, I got out here, and it put a smile on my face.”
The Bears are looking for improvement at wide receiver. With Verran Tucker skipping spring practice to concentrate on academics and Michael Calvin out with a knee injury, Lagemann is getting plenty of reps to get into the mix this fall.

So our wide receiver depth is now

John Hollinger discusses Powe v. Garnett
Additionally, there’s another positive that’s gone under the radar. While Garnett has missed the past month, so has his backup, Leon Powe. Powe returned to the lineup Wednesday night and had 18 points and 13 boards in a win over Washington, providing a good indication that he’ll be ready to deliver in the playoffs.
In every respect but one, the difference between Powe and Garnett is less than you might think. Powe averages 17.5 points and 11.2 boards per 40 minutes, and shoots 52.4 percent; for Garnett those numbers are 20.3 and 10.9, and he shoots 53.1 percent. Additionally, Powe draws fouls by the bushel, while Garnett rarely gets to the stripe.
The major difference between the two is on defense. Garnett is among the best defenders in the league, of course, winning Defensive Player of the Year honors last season. Powe competes and takes lots of charges, but otherwise is average at best. Powe also averages a foul every 6.4 minutes, making it tough for him to get extended minutes.
Plus-minus numbers tell a similar story. On the season, Boston’s adjusted plus-minus with Garnett was +5.87 points per 48 minutes; with Powe it was +2.79.
If you accept that there’s about a 3-point difference between Garnett and Powe — which both the plus-minus and per-minute scoring numbers seem to indicate — then it’s still a big deal for Boston. Three points per game is huge, and the real difference may be large: Powe’s foul-proneness makes him unlikely to soak up 40 minutes a game in Garnett’s absence, and the other subs aren’t nearly as good.
For instance, if the distribution of Garnett’s 40 minutes becomes more like 24 minutes of Powe and 16 minutes of Glen Davis (-6.40), then we’re talking about nearly a seven-point difference between the Celtics with a healthy Garnett and the Celtics now.

This is where the difference between stats and non-moneyball make a big difference. Garnett’s range is able to stretch the floor – and he’s shooting 50+ as a jumpshooter while LEON’s points are mainly within 3 feet of the basket – which may clog things up for the main point producers who get to the rim like Pierce and Rondo. Also, those per-40 averages KG is battling the Duncans, Jeffersons, Gasols, Nowitzkis of the world, while LEON gets to play against the Luke Waltons and other bench 4s.
Very much true. Leon can feel out of place in the offense sometimes. BBD for all his faults can spread the floor, so his versatility puts him on the floor more often than Powe.

by Avinash Kunnath on Apr 17, 2009 7:38 AM PDT up reply actions
I’m actually worried recession will affect Leon’s contract the most – the guys like LeBron Kobe Chris Paul Wade will always get paid – but its the mid-level and bench veterans that will see a big hit to their/our paychecks due to teams watching out for the bottom line and not for productive bench rebounders.
I mean, he’s definitely not a lifetime bencher, in my opinion. If Boston doesn’t want to pay him, he’ll get a starting gig elsewhere.
JAI HO!
I think Powe is borderline starter/back-up, and actually think he would be better and more productive as a back-up. His strengths are more easily applicable to back-up power forwards, I think he would get beat down by the better starting forwards in the league (Bosh, KG, Duncan, Gasol, West, Wallace)
They're after our precious bodily fluids
Being good enough to start doesn’t always mean he’ll get paid terribly well. I’m not sure that Powe deserves a whole lot more than a guy like Carl Landry. Powe runs circles around him on offense, but you could say the same thing about Landry on defense. And Landry got 3M a year.
Most stupid GMs tend to value offense over defense anyway, but it’s hard to see Powe getting more than the midlevel exception (around ~5M/year) and given the reluctance of teams to spend the full midlevel in recent years, I’d be surprised if Powe got more than 4M a year.
Still happy over the fact that the Nets signed Ryan Anderson. Now if only they can sign Leon Powe after this year...

BEAR NOTES: Cal (16-18, 3-9) hosts 0regon (12-24, 2-7) for the first time since the 1981 season in a three-game Pac-10 series at Evans Diamond. The Ducks brought back baseball after a 28-year hiatus and are coached by George Horton, the former Cal State Fullerton coach who led the Titans to the national championship in 2004. The Golden Bears are fresh off a 21-4 victory at UC Davis Wednesday in which they pounded out 22 hits and offensively are led by sophomore outfielder/first baseman Mark Canha, who is batting a team-leading .388 (3rd in Pac-10) with a team-best 11 home runs (4th in Pac-10) and 30 RBI (5th in Pac-10). Canha, who was the March 3 Pac-10 Player of the Week after Cal’s sweep at Long Beach State, is also first in the Pac-10 with 52 hits and third in total bases (94), third in slugging percentage (.701) and ninth with a .458 on-base percentage. He had a career-high 19-game hitting streak from March 9-April 10 and has hit safely in 32 of 34 games this season. Another hot hitter for Cal is sophomore shortstop Brian Guinn, who is second on the team with a .379 average (5th in Pac-10) and fourth in the Pac-10 with 47 hits. Guinn had a spectacular game at UC Davis, going 5-for-7 with two, three-run homers. Junior center fielder Brett Jackson, a first-team Preseason All-American in Baseball America, is batting .340 and is first in the conference with 14 doubles. The Bears are first in the Pac-10 with 366 hits, 44 home runs and 594 total bases, and second with a .302 team batting average. On the mound, Cal junior left-hander Michael Bugary is 3-2 with a 2.67 ERA (6th in Pac-10) and a save. Bugary leads the Bears with 49 strikeouts (7th in Pac-10) in 33.2 innings. Opponents are batting .217 (8th in Pac-10) in 20 relief appearances (3rd in Pac-10). Cal is first in the Pac-10 with 104 strikeouts looking and 10 saves. Nine of Cal’s opponents this season were 2008 NCAA Regional participants. The Bears’ 2009 schedule is considered the nation’s third toughest by Boyd’s World.

Track Invitational at Edwards Stadium:
BERKELEY – Sixteen Olympians, including 2008 U.S. Olympic Trials 1500-meter champion Shannon Rowbury, two-time Olympic steeplechaser Anthony Famiglietti and 2008 U.S. 10,000-meter Olympian Jorge Torres are currently entered in the inaugural NYRR Distance Carnival on Friday, April 24, as the night portion of the first day of the Brutus Hamilton Invitational at Edwards Stadium. The distance carnival is scheduled for a 5:30 p.m. start.
An international field of athletes will be attempting to achieve qualifying times at 5000 meters, 10,000 meters, and the 3000-meter steeplechase for the IAAF World Championships later this summer in Berlin. In partnering with the University of California to host the NYRR Distance Carnival, NYRR will arrange pacemakers for the seeded heats of the men’s and women’s 5000- and 10,000-meter races.
Rowbury, a top American entrant in the women’s 5000 meters, most recently finished second in the Carlsbad 5000 on April 5. She is expected to face stiff competition from a trio of rising Americans in Emily Brown, Sara Hall, and Sara Slattery. On the men’s side, Torres, a 2008 Olympian at 10,000 meters, will line up against three fellow 2008 Olympians in Juan Luis Barrios of Mexico, Tom Lancashire of Great Britain, and Kevin Sullivan of Canada.

Womens Water Polo takes on CSU Bakersfield:
This Week in Cal Women’s Water Polo
The No. 5 Golden Bears (29-6 overall and 3-4 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation) plays host to No. 14 Cal State Bakersfield (19-12, 9-3 in the WWPA) on Saturday, April 18 at 5 p.m. at Spieker Aquatics Complex. The nonconference match-up will be Cal’s last regular-season game of the 2009 campaign.
Recently in Golden Bear Water Polo
Last Saturday, the Bears were edged out by No. 1 Stanford in the Big Splash, 9-8. The upset bid was hotly contested, but the Cardinal’s fourth quarter defense stifled the Golden Bear attack. Cal jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the first quarter and went into the halftime break tied, 5-5, but Stanford’s four goals in the third period proved to be too much for the Bears to overcome. Junior drivers Meghan Corso and Erin Scully both scored two goals and redshirt freshman goalkeeper Stephanie Peckham made 10 saves for the Bears in the effort.
The Bears bounced back to form with a 19-5 nonconference win over visiting Pacific at home on Monday evening. After the Tigers got out to a 2-1 lead, California went on a 4-0 scoring drive and never relinquished the lead. Junior utility Camille Hewko led California with four goals while freshman driver Emily Csikos scored three of her own. In all, nine Bears found the back of the net. Senior goalkeeper Lauren Burke and Peckham combined for 12 saves.

Mens Golf to participate in the US Intercollegiate:
STANFORD – CALIFORNIA STILL CLAWING AND SCRATCHING: The final regular-season event of 2008-09 tees off Saturday at Stanford University Golf Course as the Golden Bears seek to set a successful tone for the postseason at the U.S. Intercollegiate.
THE EVENT: The U.S. Intercollegiate takes place at Stanford University Golf Course, which features a 6,727-yard, par-70 layout. First and second rounds will be played continuously on Saturday beginning with a shotgun start. Last year, Cal played perhaps some its best golf of 2007-08, finishing in third place ahead of five ranked teams. Then-junior George Gandranata and then-freshman Stephen Hale led the Bears, both finishing the event at 213 (3) to tie for 13th place overall. Cal and UCLA were tied for third at 857 (17). Live scoring will be available at Golfstat.com.
DES SAYS: “We’d had a pretty good stretch last spring and were on a pretty good roll,” says Head Coach Steve Desimone of where his team was last year at this time. “Clearly we have not been the same team since. We’ve been erratic; when we’ve been good, we’ve been very good, but when we’ve been bad, we’ve certainly been bad. There’s been very little in between, and I’m hoping that we can find some middle ground, keep strong play and eliminate some of those down cycles.”

All injury team -- I'll give it a shot
Assuming that the criteria is missing full or substantial parts of season/career, here goes:
QB – Dave Barr (1993)
RB – Tarik Smith (1996?)
WR – G-Mac (bowls in ’03 and ’04)
WR – Chase Lyman (2004 and rest of career, really)
OT – Tepper
K – Schneider
DL – Mbakogu
DL- Brad Monahan (1992)
DL – Rulon Davis (2007)
LB – Matt Beck (late 90s)
LB – Paul Joiner (1994?)
DB – Brandon (?) Sanders (2003)
DB – Tim Mixon (2006)
I know I’m probably missing some obvious ones. Best I could do off the top of my head.
Marshawnthusiastic Jahvidtician and member of the PRileytariat.
Mbakogu was going to be good. He was our best DE at the end of the 05 season, with a big game against stanford and a game clinching play in the vegas bowl (he hit the qb on the errant pass that Mixon intercepted at the end of the game). We didn’t have much of a pass rush over the next two years, and losing Mbakogu was a big reason why.

what qb’s were in the next years draft? I don’t recall right off, but he would likely have been in a similar place….first round pick, maybe to a crappy team in the first 5, maybe to a good team later.

The next year’s class consisted of Vince Young and Matt Leinart, off the top of my head. There may be others I am missing. A quite tougher class than Alex Smith.
It’s easy for us to second guess his decision, even though his falling to the Packers might have been in his best interest. But it’s not so easy to put aside our Cal fandom for a moment to look at it from a purely economic standpoint the way Rodgers might have.

I always want players to stay of course. Except for running backs. If you have a high chance of even being drafted, go. Leave. Because you have about 9 years until nobody wants you anymore. Don’t waste one in school. Especially Jahvid Best, who hasn’t shown he can stay healthy.

Well I’m presuming that they are 21, so that’s until they are 30. When you hit 30 you should learn how to play bridge because you will be retired within 2 years at most.

i agree with your point, only I would guess most running backs only have about 5 or 6 good years in them.

I mean if the running back is really good they play until they are 30. I think 5 or 6 is a bit low estimate.

If they’re really good (and hence not splitting carries) they’re going to peak around their 3rd or 4th year. They might play till 30 but they’re not going to be on the same level as when they’re 24.

Players are locking down their positions heading into tomorrow’s scrimmage.
Both Tedford and defensive coordinator Bob Gregory said the final scrimmage won’t have huge implications as far as determining a pecking order for the fall. Tedford acknowledged that Cal seems to be set at tackle with Mike Tepper on the left and Mitchell Schwartz on the right. Chris Guarnero seems to be locked in at center as well. But although the Bears seem to have settled in with Mark Boskovich at left guard and Chet Teofilo at right guard, Tedford said those positions will remain competitive in the fall.
One reason the scrimmage won’t have big ramifications on the defensive side of the ball is because there isn’t a whole lot of uncertainty. Gregory said the Bears have settled on keeping Devin Bishop at outside linebacker and Mychal Kendricks on the inside. More competition will come in the fall when JC linebackers Ryan Davis, Jarred Price and Jerome Meadows show up. Davis figures to compete strongly with Bishop at weakside linebacker.

carp's gameday favorites
This topic is near & dear to my heart. I LOVE to tailgate with family and friends. We’ve tailgated at a variety of events (dirt car racing, minor league baseball, plus the usuals) and we always enjoy it.
First, this issue brings in key variables such as how much prep time you have, the size of your party, and how much tailgate time you have. Therefore, I have several recipe go-to tailgate meals as I highlight below. Second, I highly recommend a ‘kiss the chef’ apron because it keeps your outfit from getting sauce/juices on it and you wouldn’t believe how many kisses you’ll get from ladies that have 3+ glasses of white wine in ’em. Good stuff. Onto the recipes:
Aidel’s chicken & apple sausage: When you’ve had a busy week, it’s nice to not have to prepare a bunch of food. People, generally, love these things. Yes, I’m of the belief that hot dogs/sausages do NOT get ketchup on them whatsoever. Replace with ass-kicking mustard (Mendocino mustard) and/or horseradish.
prep time: minimal, although I usually prepare my grilled veggies as well (see below)
cook time: not long (duh)
Grilled Veggies: Great with dogs, burgers, and meat-based sandwiches.
prep time: 20-30 min
cook time: 10 min
protocol: Chop up sweet onion, bell pepper (you choose the color although green works well), garlic, and maybe jalapenos if your crowd likes it hot. Place on a sheet of foil. Drizzle EVOO & sprinkle Pappy’s Meat Rub (Costco). Wrap up foil. Keep chilled until it’s time to cook it. Cook for 10 min flipping once if desired.
Pork Tenderloin: Buy at Costco (~$10)…it comes preseasoned (rosemary & garlic, I believe).
prep time: nada
cook time: 1 h min
Protocol: This tests the limitations of a BBQer. With a ~5 in piece of meat, one must use the indirect method of heating (place birquettes around rim of barbeque NOT even spread out (i.e., the direct method). Try to avoid lifting the lid as much as possible. You are trying to make the BBQ like an oven, not a broiler. Otherwise, you’ll end up with a charred outside and a raw inside. Trust me, you don’t want to fuck around with uncooked pork.
Shishkabobs: People love these, and I almost didn’t share my recipe. Use with flank steak, chicken breast, or all-veggie (if that’s your thing).
prep time: considerable. Maybe and hour. Must allow 12-36 h of marination.
cook time: 5 min per side (direct)
Protocol: On Thursday night, cut white onions, meat, green bell peppers, and fresh (not canned) pineapple into bite size pieces (1″ × 1″). You don’t want anyone to choke. Using wood skewers, place each item in order and slide down the shaft. Soak in Yoshida’s Teriyaki Sauce (<———absolute key!!! Accept no substitute!) and copius amounts of whole black peppercorns and minced garlic. Be sure you have a large tupperware container…otherwise this gets messy in transit. Cook 5 min/side (flip once) and serve piping hot right off the grill. This recipe will likely result in passerbys congratulating you on the wonderful smells, people buying you beers, and/or nookie.
pork spare ribs: People also love these, although they are messy! Bring dental floss! These were on the grill for the Oregon game (see below).
prep time: About an hour. Must allow 12-36 h of marination.
cook time: 8 min per side (direct)
Protocol: On Th night, bring water to a boil and boil ribs for 15 min. Drain the water (and fat). This will make them leaner and more succulent. Add your favorite BBQ sauce ever (I recommend a mixture of Cattlemen’s and Kinder’s BBQ sauces OR the secret BBQ sauce from Barney’s (on Clayton Valley Rd. in Concord). Don’t skimp on the sauce, and stay away from Sweet Baby Ray’s, Jack Daniels BBQ sauce, or any other bullshit efforts that are out there. Again, add peppercorns, garlic, and chopped jalepenos. Marinate until gameday, making sure you don’t have raw meat/BBQ sauce all over your vehicle on the way to the game. Grill direct 8 min/side.
stuffed jalepenos: Spicy, but delicious.
prep time: moderate, but be careful here
cook time: 5 min per side (direct)
Protocol: While wearing gloves, chop off the end of a jalepeno, carefully remove the seeds. Rinse the insides with H20. This might sound silly, but be VERY careful about what you touch after handling jalepeno seeds. I once touched my eye area, and it felt like I got maced. No yoke. Anyway, stuff the inside with shredded pepperjack cheese and place on a wood skewer. The hardcore spicy fans will love this, and it will get them to drink more booze.

it might be the best sauce ever. They make you pay for it ($10/bottle)…although Costco frequently has it. I love soaking salmon in it as well.

In the end it tastes like grilled ass and the inside is probably raw.
As for the indirect method, I’m a big proponent of having hot/cold sides of the grill for stuff like chicken…put all your coals on 1/2 the grill and sear the goods for 1-2 minutes on either side, then move everything to the “cold” side of the grill, and cover. Flip once after about 15 minutes, then go another 15. You can use the direct heat from the coals while the chicken is on the cold side to do something like corn or potatoes or onions.
Btw I would recommend Weber’s Real Grilling if you want a good grilling book. Awesome recipes plus cooking tips for all kinds of meats.

Bears with Fangs has a quality post on Top 5 Cal Football games for this fall. The order might be a bit surprising, and I found this to be particularly interesting:
Any list comprised of must win games that doesn’t include Stanford is sacrilegious at best. However, excluding all the obvious reasons, I don’t think I could handle the backlash of not winning at Stanford Stadium this year. It’s not so much the fear of losing, it’s the fear of the aftermath would likely follow.
An entire year of obnoxious Stanford fans singing the praises of Harbough and his 2-1 record over Tedford? No thank you. The media declaring that Cal’s second loss to Stanford in Tedford’s 9 seasons marks the changing of the tide or shifting of collegiate football powers in the Bay Area? Barf. An affirmation of Harbaugh’s innovative commitment to players playing both offense and defense? Please.
A Big Game loss preventing the Bears from their first Rose Bowl berth in over fifty years? Lord, take me now.I believe he could have used the ‘FML’ there at the end.

I tend to long at the big picture: losing to a shitty team once sucks as far as the season goes, but doesn’t really reflect on the program as a whole. Losing to USC year after year after year is infinitely more frustrating to me.
We can lose to a superior team and maintain our dignity… everyone loses to USC right now, so it goes. We can lose to a lesser team and it sucks, but it can be meaningless if everything else goes our way. Losing to a peer, though… that really screws things up. UCLA and Oregon are must wins in that sense. We have to consistently beat our peers to make any real gains.
That said, USC is horrible and I hate everything they stand for. So that would feel the best.

I haven’t seen much of the CFL, but from what I understand of it, it’s far more like Arena football than the NFL. If that’s the case, then I don’t think I’d enjoy all that much…though I freely admit I haven’t seen an entire game.

The only real similarities is that there is a lot more passing because there are only 3 downs. Its not like its a 50 yard field with a wall. It is just a less in the trenches game. 3 downs, 110 yard fields, bigger balls, goalposts at the front of the endzone, 1 yard between Oline and Dline, 12 guys on a field. Just because it is more passing oriented doesn’t mean it is like the AFL.

Looks like a lot of big plays and special teams. I’ve never seen a game, but it could be cool.
It is a far more (relatively) graceful game. I think CSNCA showed a game a week, as of a few years ago. Definitely try to check one out. I definitely think it is a better alternative for non NFLers than, say the AFL (even before bankruptcy), because it isn’t gimmicky.

Hey Rollubears or anyone else…
Maybe you can help me out with this. I hear a lot about how American athletes don’t want to sign for teams in Canada because the endorsements opportunities are limited, however, from what I have seen the Canadian sports teams in the major american sports (Blue Jays, Raptors) seem to enjoy the status of Canada’s team, and games are broadcast throughout the country. Therefore, I would imagine that they would have all of Canada as their marketing base, comparing Canada’s 30 (?) million people against the bay area’s 5, I would think the opportunity for endorsements would be greater in Canada.
They're after our precious bodily fluids
Some people, like Steve ’It’s cold and they take your money’ Francis, aren’t very cultured so just follow stereotypes of Canada. The thing is, hockey is sooo big there that other sports get put on the back burner. Also, some people just want to be in their home country. People have their own reasons. I don’t really think the endorsements thing is true, because only great players get endorsements, so if you are a great player you will get them no matter location.
Canada gets screwed over a lot though my American leagues. Vancouver built a brand new stadium, trying to get a baseball team. MLB didn’t notice, but they did get a basketball team. Until the owner bitched his way out. The Expos also got screwed by their owner. And hockey teams got moved away from cities that, though small compared to the American cities the team was moved to, offered far more support and love to the teams.

In fairness there are plenty of American cities that get screwed over by the rich owners
Charlotte Hornets, Seattle Supersonics, Cleveland Browns……

Of course, but considering that Canada has 2 American professional sports teams outside of the NHL each screw over is magnified a lot more because it means the number of Canadian teams in the league is halved.

part of the problem, at least in the past, has been the exchange rate hurts canadian clubs, so players will end up having to sign for less to play for them.
also, the SkyDome (sorry, Rodgers Centre) sucks. it was recently sold to the Blue Jays for $1.

So, basically, you gotta Go Bears!
FML!!! I know we don’t do politics here, but this made blood pressure go up. Why, you ask? Because I think if she ran, she might somehow actually win.
Palin drew approximately 3,000 people to the Vanderburgh County Right to Life fundraising dinner in Evansville, an annual banquet that typically attracts some of the GOP’s top national talent. Her sold-out appearance in a local exhibition hall prompted organizers to set up a paid closed-circuit broadcast at a nearby auditorium for a large spillover crowd and led local authorities to close down nearby streets.
"This is always a large event," said David O’Steen, executive director of National Right to Life. "There was a lot of excitement about this among pro-life people. She is very well-known and respected in the pro-life movement."

Q for lawyers:
This is one thing I’ve always been puzzled by. Yoo has taken shit from EVERYONE, and everyone seems to hate his guts. Yet wasn’t he simply charged with the assignment of legally analyzing controversial interrogation methods? And after analysis of the law and dozens of examples of what may or may not constitute torture, he basically said “the law, as I interpret it, shows that slapping and waterboarding do not condone torture.”
Isn’t there a TREMENDOUS gray area for what constitutes “torture?” How is his assessment of they grayest of gray areas any different or worse than any number of controversial interpretations by justices nationwide? Why is there so much vitriol directed at him personally?
He doesn’t himself CONDONE torture, he didn’t say “lolz guyz I love torture!” All he was given was an assignment to analyze whether certain methods constitute torture, and he found they didn’t. So if anything, people should be criticizing his intelligence or legal acumen or whatever, not saying he should be criminally prosecuted (what friggin law did HE break!?)
What’s the deal?

though I think a more thoughtful approach could have been used, especially if one takes a look at the broader context of an action.

While I mostly agree with you…the argument isn’t that he should be prosecuted for his analysis itself, but rather that he should be prosecuted for authorizing (in his role as a government official) the use of methods that violate intl human rights laws.
Btw there is precedent for this kind of thing being prosecutable in both Supreme Court cases and the Nuremberg trials. I’m not a lawyer so I can’t tell you how applicable it is.
My opinion:
Writing a memo supporting what international custom and law would define as unlawful torture (as in violates the Geneva Convention and other international standards) is probably not criminal conduct but the argument can be made that it is. And let’s be clear, international law and custom would clearly find that the methods used under the Bush admin were criminal. However, the Obama admin has already said that those American people directly involved in torture will NOT be prosecuted, so it stands to reason that the guy who wrote the memo won’t be prosecuted either. That’s quite disappointing and shows you the nature of politics. While Obama routinely bashed Guantamo and the Bush admin’s torture methods in his campaign, he is actively protecting CIA/Bush/War machine members. It’s in line with his position that lawsuits for extraordinary rendition cannot be had against the federal government because of “National Security” (the same position held by the Bush admin), thereby blocking those lawsuits. These two positions have been a blow to civil libertarians who hoped Obama would present a shift of policy in these areas.
As for Yoo, let’s be clear. Sometimes you are asked to write a memo and other times you are asked to write a memo supporting a certain position. Yoo was asked to write a memo supporting the use of torture. Whether he did so because he believed the law supported his views or because he hoped for political favors only he can answer. However, at the time they were written many many international law scholars (and law students) protested his views. In other words, it was not a “hindsight is 20/20” thing but something that was clear at the time.
IMO he’s a scum. Would I wish that he didn’t work at Boalt? Yes. Do I wish he were fired? Yes. Do I think Boalt should fire him? Not necessarily. But I would hope that staff and students challenge him to the point that his conviction in his memos are changed and that he realizes torture is inconsistent with fundamental human rights no matter who the enemy.
by oaktownmario on Apr 17, 2009 2:38 PM PDT up reply actions
But he didn’t authorize them. He merely gave legal justification for their being authorized. It was members of the Bush admin who actually authorized the methods…

Here comes the Party Yacht...
So says Okanes. (Though the PRileytariat still rules at the moment.)
One of the more notable developments over the past two practices is the improvement of quarterback Brock Mansion. He’s struggled for much of the spring with his accuracy, but the light bulb seems to be turning on a bit. He is looking more comfortable and confident, and Thursday night made several good throws in a variety of drills and plays.
While it appears Kevin Riley still is very much the leader of the pack, it seemed in recent practices that Beau Sweeney had passed Mansion in the competition for No. 2. But that notion seems a bit premature now. Saturday’s final scrimmage will be revealing for Mansion, as well as all the quarterbacks.
Coach Jeff Tedford has made a point all spring not to single out either of the quarterbacks either positively or negatively, and he reiterated Thursday night that the competition is still wide open and nobody has an edge.
" They’ve all done a nice job of improving every day, and making mistakes and learning," he said.
Tedford acknowledged that Mansion has looked better the past two practices, but again quickly pointed out that each quarterback has had highs and lows this spring.
"He’s made a lot of strides. They all have," Tedford said. "Brock has done a nice job teh past two days. He’s been pretty sharp."
Marshawnthusiastic Jahvidtician and member of the PRileytariat.
Soooooo…another long summer of guessing who the starting quarterback will be. Awesome.
So, basically, you gotta Go Bears!
Not necessarily, if Riley remains the clear “leader of the pack.” Maybe there will just be a training camp battle for # 2, like Riley v. Reed, 2007.
Can’t wait to hear the reports from the scrimmage!

Back in the day
Gamedays 1982 – 1987 started with a trip to Top Dog for a couple of Brats with Hot German mustard. That was followed by a visit to Togo’s for a regular #24 with an extra scoop of avocado (which we saved for halftime). Drinks were brought in with us, right next to the oranges (back then there wasn’t any trouble with bringing in your own beverages).
Post game meals mainly consisted of a couple of Golden Bears at Henry’s, followed by pitchers at Manny’s or Kips.
Those were the days.
Yeah, well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.
Correction: There WAS a Togo’s near campus.
It was on Bancroft right east of Bancroft Clothing Company – in the same shopping plaza as Avant Carde, Copy Central and that healthy food store that I’ve never seen anyone eat at.
