Cal @ Arizona MBB 2009.03.05 Open Thread

Any guesses as to the last time Cal won at the McKale Center in Tucson?  It's been a long, long time.  14 years, in fact.  On February 12, 1995, Cal went into Tucson and tipped No. 9 Arizona, 74-72, with someone named K.J. Roberts (don't remember him?  He transferred to UC Riverside after the season) driving in the lane and hitting a jumper with less than 2 seconds left to win it for the Bears.

The next season, the Bears lost 71-68 at McKale (though if they had won, Cal would have later forfeited the game due to an ineligble player), Todd Bozeman would resign after only one more game (a loss to Iowa State to open the NCAA Tournament), and Ben Braun was hired.  Braun would then lose his next 12 games at Arizona, the only Pac-10 arena in which he failed to win.  Not a lot of shame in that, given how consistently successful the Wildcats were under Lute Olson, but it's still been a disappointingly long time.  Can Monty change Cal's luck in the desert?

One thing to watch for as the Bears hit the road:  free throws.  The Bears are in the top 20 in the country in terms of free throw percentage, making more than 75% from the charity stripe, but up until the most recent swing through Oregon, Cal was shooting nearly 5% worse on the road (they've since raised their percentage, going 17-20 at Oregon and a season-best 17-18 against Oregon State, about the only thing that went right in that game).  The Bears have hit 70% or less of their free throws 6 times this season; 5 of those times were on the road (@Missouri, @UNLV, @Utah, @Stanford, @UCLA).  A 5% difference might not seem like a lot, but 1 or 2 points could make all the difference in a tight game down the stretch.  Can the Bears tune out the hostile crowd in McKale and continue to succeed from the charity stripe?

Your game information:

California Golden Bears (21-8, 10-6) at Arizona Wildcats (18-11, 8-8)

That last win down in Arizona was in overtime, wasn’t it? Or maybe not – but I seem to remember Jason Kidd driving down the left sideline, stopping, turning it around to almost hand it to Lamond Murray who hit a fade away 3 to send the game into overtime.

That following season, Jelani Gardner turned the ball over 3 trillion times (possibly an over estimate) and Tremaine Folkes (he of the ineligibility) and Shareef still almost almost carried us to a win.

We actually drove down to Tucson to watch that game, then stopped in LA to watch selection Sunday, celebrated for 10 minutes then got back on the road back to Berkeley.

I also flew into Dallas for that depressing tournament loss, as Kelvin Cato blocked 3 trillion shots and Iowa State held Ed Gray and ’Reef down to crush our tournament dreams.

Shut down one and the game will stay close. Shut down two like we did in Berkeley and Cal will win by a safe margin. Now let’s play some defense!

Well, he’d be sitting on a bench collecting a little bit over a million a year for 3 years . .. before taking his career to the beach volleyball tour.

I thought his lousy play (respective to his previous seasons) but I think I’m still dreaming that if he had left, Anderson might have stayed.

his stock was slipping

i went his hs. he was always soft. joe alexander made him look terrible pre-draft.

He kinda seems like one.

Theo shot the ball a lot.

I only saw the 2nd half but that made me smile. You can come back inside the house now, Theo. I forgive you.

Theo makes me cringe, but his numbers always end up better than I thought while watching the game.

always a douche

would have been a lottery after mcdonalds all american mvp. the more he plays the more he slips. my u of a friends all hate him. no d. doesnt even pretend. gassed half the time. he should have gone to ucla and howland would have made him play d. he actually should play volleyball (he was all-american in that) and it would be better for him since no physical contact.

by bringbackbuddytrees on Mar 5, 2009 9:56 PM PST reply actions

But he’s got intangibles look at that play he made falling to the ground it was clutch he’s got clutch and talent and he’s white the media loves him he should go in the top ten!

He would be at midcourt, where they wouldn't expect to guard him.

Or if he played the Suns or Warriors every night, he would average 30. Then again i think I’d average 10 if I played them every night.

This is my last game, I don't care about my body.

by rollonubears on Mar 5, 2009 10:11 PM PST up reply actions

For some reason, I feel the dunk at the end was selfish and he was just padding his stats. As the announcer was yelling don’t shoot a 2, he goes right to the whole. I know that it scored and probably was a good play; but I don’t know, something just felt a bit off there. I can’t explain it.

This is my last game, I don't care about my body.

I know. I really don’t understand why that play bugged me. It kinda just did. It seemed a bit too triumphant considering the situation. Logically I have no reasoning. It just seemed a bit weird.

Just a fantastically enjoyable game all-around.

Good comeback

Amazing shooting

Hilarious rebounding (Randle on the missed FT)

Dejected Lute

Plus, we can all stop feeling nervous about Selection Sunday.

And I have never heard anything quite like the sound that the ’Zona fans were making when we attempted threes at the end of the game. It was like a groan that would morph into a boo when we hit one.

Regardless of the result vs. ASU, Cal is the 3 seed in the Pac-10 tourney
Two-team tie
   a. Results of head-to-head competition during the regular season.
   b. Each team’s record vs. the team occupying the highest position in the final
regular standings, and then continuing down through the standings until one team gains an advantage.

I’m guessing this means we could play pretty much anybody out of USC, Arizona, WSU, and OSU depending on how the last day goes.

by BearsNecessity on Mar 5, 2009 10:09 PM PST up reply actions

i dunno

i think the Beavers are a bad matchup for us. i would much rather get USC or Wazzu in the opening round.

So, basically, you gotta Go Bears!

They all kind of scare me

Either:

1) a red hot WSU team (cause they’ll have to beat udub to get the 6 spot
2) an OSU team that swept us
3) USC literally at home
or 4) Arizona, probably the most talented team of the 4
