TOE TO TOE IS BACK!

BERKELEY - Toe to Toe, a benefit for ODC Dance Commons and Cal Athletics, returns for the third year to the Concourse Exhibition Center in San Francisco on April 16, 2009 from 6:30-9:30 p.m. for an evening of dancing finesse, offbeat antics, great camaraderie and fun.

In 2008, ODC dancers rematched Cal student-athletes to settle the age-old question: who's more fit, dancers or athletes? In strength and agility, ODC beat Cal yet again. So this year, the athletic edge sharpens with Toe to Toe - Round 3. The showcase sport will be men's water polo, with additional challenges in volleyball, soccer, track & field, golf and swimming.

The judging process is half the fun, with competitions decided by veterans in their field: San Francisco Ballet principal dancer emeritus Muriel Maffre; San Francisco 49er Super Bowl champions Harris Barton, Dwight Clark and Ronnie Lott; aerial dancer Joanna Haigood; and entertainer MC Hammer.

What brings audiences to Toe to Toe is gracious sportsmanship mixed with edge-of-your seat competitiveness. "The Games create an amazing high, perhaps the combination of testosterone, sweat and grace." wrote Leah Garchik of the San Francisco Chronicle.

ODC founder and Artistic Director Brenda Way is gearing up: "This year, Cal pulled out all the stops. We can't wait to go head-to-head in the ring and cheek-to-cheek on the dance floor."

Event Chair Warren Hellman is ready: "This will be a real shoot-out. Once again, let the games and the dances begin!"

In Toe to Toe: Round 3, ODC dancers and Cal student-athletes are subjected to tests of skill, strength and agility, with music and cheerleading pumping the audience. The night ends with an audience favorite, the Toe-to-Toe take on Dancing with the Stars.

Ashley Walker named 3rd Team all-American.

Senior forward Ashley Walker was named to the Associated Press All-American third-team in post season honors released on Tuesday. The AP All-American team was voted on prior to the NCAA Tournament and is the first All-American list to be released for the 2008-09 season. Junior guard Alexis Gray-Lawson was an honorable mention.

Walker, who finished her Cal career on Sunday as the second leading scorer and top rebounder in program history, earned her first Associated Press All-American nod after twice earning post season AP All-American honorable mentions (2008 and 2007). She was a Sports Illustrated second-team All-American in 2008 and a 2008-09 pre-season Sporting News All-American.

Walker, a 2009 All-Pac-10 first-team honoree, led the conference in scoring this season, averaging 19.8 points per game. She tied her career high with a 32-point performance against No. 24 Virginia to propel the Bears to their first-ever NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 appearance.

Walker is a finalist for several national player of the year awards and under consideration for other All-American honors that will be released within the next few weeks.

Gray-Lawson was second on the Cal team in scoring, averaging 12.2 points per game. Gray-Lawson had one of the best assist-to-turnover ratios in the country, with 102 assists to 67 turnovers. She spent most of the season ranked No. 3 in the Pac-10 for three-point shooting accuracy. This is her first All-American honorable mention.

Cal hosts St. Mary’s in Women’s Lacrosse:

This Week
California (4-8, 2-1 MPSF) hosts conference foe Saint Mary’s (1-7, 0-3 MPSF) at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, April 1, at Memorial Stadium before facing top-ranked Northwestern (10-0) in a nonconference match at 11 a.m. PT on Sunday, April 5, in Evanston, Ill. The Golden Bears have a 14-1 record in the all-time series with the Gaels and have a 0-5 record in the all-time against the four-time defending NCAA champion Wildcats.

The Bears have won six straight games against Saint Mary’s since their only loss to the Gaels, a 7-5 setback in the 2003 season opener in Moraga, Calif. Cal, which defeated Saint Mary’s, 15-2, last season, has only allowed the Gaels to score in double figures once in their 11-year series, in a 20-10 Bears win in 2004.

Cal is currently on a five-game losing streak, including setbacks in their two games last week. On March 24 in Columbus, Ohio, the Bears fell, 18-5, to the then-No. 16 Buckeyes. Cal lost to Denver in an MPSF battle, 11-10, on March 28 in Denver.

Mens Golf gets 5th:

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. – Three Golden Bears ended their Western Intercollegiate tournaments in the top 20, led by Eric Mina’s 67 (-3) on the final day to finish tied for 6th, as California climbed one spot into a 5th-place finish (+45) at Pasatiempo Golf Course on Tuesday. Oregon won the three-round team title at +25 and Oregon State’s Diego Velasquez was the top individual finisher with his even-par 210.

Mina kicked off his final round on hole 4 with a birdie and followed that two holes later with an eagle on the par 5, 555-yard 6th hole, putting down three more birdies to finish the event at 215 (+5)

Michael Jensen also started with a birdie on hole 6 and was under par until a double bogey down the stretch put him +1 on the day and +11 overall (T13).

John Murphy had to battle through a triple-bogey 12th hole to end his final round at 77 (7) and finish tied for 36th (17).

Stephen Hale ended the event in a tie for 20th, bogeying his first hole but righting the ship enough to end Tuesday’s round with a 73 (+3).

Womens Golf News:

The shorthanded No. 24 California Golden Bears women’s golf team will play in their first major tournament since Feb. 24, competing in Tempe at the PING/ASU Invitational April 3-5.

The PING/ASU Invitational will feature 17 teams, including six Pac-10 schools, playing the par-72 6,230 yard Karsten Golf Course at Arizona State University in Tempe. The three-round, 54-hole tournament is one of the most competitive tournaments on the schedule for the Bears. Last years, Cal finished eighth among the 17 teams in the tournament led by Pia Halbig’s 5-over 18th place finish.

Halbig is coming off a tie for first place at last weekend’s individual tournament in La Quinta, Calif. Halbig shot a one-over 73 at the Stadium Course at the southern California desert resort to tie for first place with Tiffany Joh of UCLA. Halbig moved up to No. 32 in the latest Golfweek individual rankings. Allison Goodman, who shot a +3 to finish sixth at La Quinta, is flirting with a top-50 ranking, coming in at No. 59 on the latest list.

The Bears played in the individual tournament near Palm Springs last weekend and played a dual against San Jose State the weekend before, but due to the rainout of the Spartan Invitational at the beginning of March, have not played in a traditional tournament since the Wildcat Invitational in Sonora, Mexico that took place February 22-24. It is the last event presently on the schedule for the team before the Pac-10 Championships April 24-26 at Stanford.

Twist you suck

I was about to do tomorrow’s DBD but noooo, you have to be the selfish bastard you are and do it at night. What happened to the days when you would wake up at 4 a.m. to do these badboys? At least then, I had a chance to sneak one in right about this time. But nooo, you are so selfish! What’s next, are you going to snag the last copy of of TBL at Hollywood Video, just while CBKWit is about to reach for it? Are you going to buy DM a drink right before I make my move on her? Are you going to pimpslap JSHUUUUwhatever right as I’m going to ask him for my money from his night’s work?

I had sleeping problems in the summer, because I would wake up at like 6 or so due to the heat and then be unable to sleep. Now, I dont have those problems. They might come back, I dont know. They sucked.

Generally, if theres nothing of importance, I just put up the DBD in the morning. But I really wanted to rock this joke, even though its sort of a meaningless one. But I love me some Anchorman.

Great Q+A with Sandy Barbour

Q: How are the economic crisis and state budget cuts affecting Cal athletics? Is there a chance you will have to cut staff or any of your 27 teams?

A: Every source of funding that we have is under extreme pressure because of the economy. If our revenue goes down, then our expenses need to go down. We’re taking very hard looks at ways to cut our expenditures, to be wiser about how we spend our money, to maximize our revenues. The best thing we can do is continue to have our teams be good and vibrant and attractive. That may not be enough in this economy. Certainly the options we want to choose are the ones that have the least impact on our student-athletes and their ability to be successful. So, cutting programs obviously would not be on that list. Anything else, we’ll take a good hard look at.

Q: What accomplishments are you proudest of during your tenure here?

A: Mostly it has to do with – and it started long before I got here – this idea that Cal could compete for championships in football and basketball and crew and track and gymnastics, you name it, and maintain a high academic standard. I can’t tell you how many people have said to me over the course of nearly five years that nobody ever talked about winning a national football championship at Cal. Well, why not? We talk about it in every other sport. Thanks to Jeff Tedford we can talk about it in football.

I’d much rather have us maintain competitive, revenue-generating teams than cut athletics like Stanford has been forced to do. Another reason I think Barbour is the most valuable asset for Cal Athletics.

Okanes livechat Thursday from 1-2.

Not surprisingly, the Bears were a little rusty on their first practice after break.

Tedford said at this point in the spring, the coaching staff isn’t as worried about the depth chart as it is simply evaluating talent. Unlike the season, when the first and second units are getting reps are getting the majority of the reps and young players are on scout team, spring practice gives the coaches a chance to evaluate everybody. First team, second team, third team, and even fourth-stringers, if applicable, get reps.

"We try to give everybody an equal opportunity," Tedford said. "Everybody on the team is practicing. There are a lot of young people that you try to implement in what you are doing. There are a lot of mistakes, but that is what spring is all about. It’s about getting guys in there and getting their feet wet. There is a lot of evaluation that goes on, and you kind of gear it toward Saturday’s scrimmage. That’s when you cut them loose and play football."

Cal will scrimmage each of the next three Saturdays, with the final one on April 18 wrapping up spring practice. That scrimmage is open to the public.

I talked a little with defensive coordinator Bob Gregory tonight and one thing that struck me is how different this spring is for him compared with last year. Last spring, it was all about implementing the 3-4 defense. Each session was heavy on teaching. Now that the players have played a full season in the new system, spring practice is more about on-field exploits.

"It’s great not having to teach everything," Gregory said. "We kind of know it now. Now we’re kind of picking and choosing what we do. This spring is totally different. Our players have a comfort level with it now."

Tedford’s being much nicer to the media about the rustyness than he was to the team, which makes sense. He really came down hard on them for not working out on their own during break and coming back out of shape. I expect the team will be extremely motivated come Thursday. Heck, I was motivated, and I’m just a water boy!

I was interested to finally get to work with the wide receivers yesterday. I figure that Nyan and J Ross are our #1 guys, but I’m guessing Marvin Jones will see a good amount of playing time as well. He’s looked good in practice, and people, including Coach Tedford, keep talking about how good his hands are.

Alright, fine, I admit it! "Hydration Technician" really DOES just mean "water boy!"

Overall, with the exception of the blue on blue combo, I think the new jerseys were kind of a step back from the old ones.

There was just something about the blue on blue that I thought made it look really cool. It may be that it just looks far more intimidating when you are running and all of a sudden you see a swarm of dark colors running at you. Maybe it made them look at ninjas. I don’t remember my reasoning. I do know, however, that both times we wore them we had a blowout victory.

The thing about these jerseys is that they are incredibly simplistic. If you have dark colors (like the blue on blue) the simplicity looks cool (and a little bit stealth/ninja like, which is always good). If you have light colors like the white on white or gold on gold, then the simplicity looks very eh because it really stands out, just not in a good way.

Having done both I can advise: They are both fun, unique experiences and expect difficult parking/lots of people. My best parking advice for both campuses: Mondavi Center Lot for UC Davis, and LHS for Cal (take shuttle down).

Yeah. The best part: his last carry was with more than 10 minutes to go in the 3rd. I will always be able to say I witnessed the most efficient and one of the most amazing performances in the history of college football. Another fun fact: one of his runs was a 1 yard td run, making his YPC for that day even more impressive.

but they are both out of spring practice due to injury?

by turkey on Apr 1, 2009 2:40 PM PDT up reply actions

he’s profiling the top guys in the conference, and while we’ve had top guys in the conference before (Rodgers, Lynch, DJax, etc.), what’s been more lacking is depth — specifically, Pac-10 caliber guys filling the two-deep and then some — something Miller’s list doesn’t cover at all. I think we could be good, but it’s going to be more about whether we can plug those few holes that we always seem to have (last year, it was kickoffs, QBs and WRs) than whether Best > Quizz.

So, basically, you gotta Go Bears!

by ragnarok on Apr 1, 2009 2:22 PM PDT up reply actions

Only thing where there will be a serious drop off is FB. Everywhere else we are probably improving. This team has a chance to be special. It is really all in the hands of Riley and Ludwig. They are pretty much the only key unknowns. Everywhere else we know what we are getting.

Toot Toot

by rollonubears on Apr 1, 2009 2:31 PM PDT up reply actions

I think the Bears will be really good, but I have my reservations.

1) I believe the offensive line will be healthier than last year, therefore more cohesive and stable —→ better

2) I think Kevin Riley will be good, not great, but better than average. I think the QB compeition got into his head a bit, and it is fairly common for Sophomore qb’s to struggle (particularly, 1st time starters), since they still don’t fully comprehend everything going on, on the field.

sophomore + qb competition = overthinking —→ hesitation and sensory overload. Colt McCoy struggled his Sophomore season, and he did fine last year.

3) Everything else should be game, I just worry about the game the Bears always seem to give away aka the Pete Alamar special.

I think we have Top Ten Potential, but realistic expectations should be for a finish in the 10-15 range, with a record of 9-3 or 10-2.

They're after our precious bodily fluids

Meh. It is fairly proven that media types hate Cal, so what did you expect? I don’t believe he ever stated what he was basing his rankings on, either talent or production. Talent-wise, I don’t think Vereen deserves to be in the top 30. Production-wise he is better than the USC triplets but he also had more carries. Vereen is an unheard of name. He will have his time. A guy who will probably be 1st team all american this year isn’t on the list (Anger, or he will be in my opinion) so Vereen shouldn’t be too upset.

I just think Pete is such a phony

he’s all smiles and enthusiasm when things are going well. Wow, that’s impressive, so difficult to be gregarious when you’re on top of the world.

When the other shoe falls, though (and it does very rarely for him), he’s an ass. Witness him storming off the field and not shaking Harbaugh’s hand after the huge upset in 08. How much of a jerk do you have to be not to shake the opposing coaches hand?? What is he, twelve?

It rubs off on his players, too, from Leinart claiming that they were better than Texas on national TV right after the rose bowl to Sanchez acting like a little punk right after the OSU game. They’re all smiles and relaxed during their many blowouts, but they turn into huge babies whenever they lose.

Refs never like to be the ones deciding a title game, in any sport. You can’t expect to get a PF call in that circumstance.

by Avinash Kunnath on Apr 1, 2009 10:52 PM PDT up reply actions

There was a PF call that DID decide the game when the Trojans had the ball. It took back a first down they got, which would’ve allowed them to run out the clock… I don’t think there’s anything wrong with saying this call would’ve ended the game.

Plus, I just watched the game and the Trojans felt like, if some lucky breaks went there way, they would have won handily. Texas didn’t not have any advantage in any area… They just happened to win that game that night, not because of superior team play but because of lucky breaks and officiating. I mean, VINCE YOUNG’S KNEE WAS DOWN… HE STOOD BACK UP…. AND THROWS A TD?!?!

HYDROTECH IS FREE!

by Thoroughbred on Apr 1, 2009 11:27 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah, but I never argued that

USC might’ve been the more talented team than Texas; Vegas did favor them by 7 points, which is fairly high for a title game. But that defense gave up 556 yards of total offense. That’s ridiculous, for ANY kind of sporting event.

What you did argue was that plays earlier in the game influence the outcome far less than plays near the end. The Bush fumble is anywhere from a 7 to 10 point swing, given that Texas went down the field and scored immediately. That’s one or two extra possessions, which is a LOT.

Yes, some plays end games, but that’s just because they’re at the end of games. I do recall USC still having a 4th and 1 after that penalty and then yanking Bush out of the game, and not shadowing a linebacker on Vince Young at ANY POINT during the second half and on that final drive. They fucked this one away plenty.

by Avinash Kunnath on Apr 2, 2009 3:44 AM PDT up reply actions

If a play would’ve been called correctly, it would’ve directly led to the end of the game and a victory for a team that ended up losing. You can say this definitively. You don’t need to talk about point swings or conjecture (maybe Reggie Bush fumbles on the subsequent play after his fumble in the first half, who knows?)… these are all things that may have happened. You can talk about everything that did happen without filling in any ambiguities. So, when you look at what actually happened, you don’t need to state things like “if everything else holds equal,” which I firmly believe is bogus… i don’t think the same game is just played but with a score that’s different (if the score was 45-33 at some point… Texas would’ve been playing different defense, called dfferent plays, etc.)

I agree that the Trojans had ample chances to win the game after the play, and the PF didn’t decide it in Texas’ favor, but no single play in the first half could’ve directly led to a victory for the Trojans, which this play would have.

Also, I never argued that plays in the first half of the game are less important. I may have misspoke when I said the Bush fumble play was “too early in the game to be a deciding factor” … I say this because I did not view that play as a deciding factor because so many different things would’ve been changed by this fumble not occurring (i.e. Texas may changed defensive style/playcalling, different team psyches, etc.). Who are we to tell what the game would’ve looked like if he had kept onto the ball? Why should I just say every play after this would be the same, but with a different score… Each play called by a defense or offense would be changed because of this play early in the game, and in some cases, these changes could be incredibly drastic.

I’d rather just stay in the realm of things that actually happened, and when the game was nearing its conclusion, I saw one single play that actually DECIDED THE GAME ON THE FIELD in favor of the Trojans. But, the referees threw an UNWARRANTED PENALTY, which did not allow a play to end the game. You can’t really say the same thing about the following plays for the Trojans because they only had GOOD CHANCES TO DECIDE IT ON THE FIELD. There is an amount of conjecture with “if he would’ve shadowed Vince Young or kept Bush in on 4th-and-1,” that is not definitive.

Look at it this way. Say USC gets a likely score from that Bush run and everything else holds equal. It’s 45-33 rather than 38-33 on that last drive, and Texas still has miles to go.

Now you can SAY that mistakes can be made up, but in the process of a 60 minute game I’d say mistakes at any point of a game add up.

I dunno. Football is such a weird sport to measure in terms of process, but I’d say the impact of that turnover was equal to the impact of that no call.

Oklahoma recovered the kick. Had that been called correctly, Oklahoma would have won the game.

Instead, the ball was rewarded to Oregon. As Shu points out above, Oklahoma had more chances after that, but it still changed the game.

It’s spelled "S-h-u-f-e-l-t"

by JShufelt on Apr 2, 2009 1:40 PM PDT up reply actions

Not necessarily.

Mistakes earlier in the game, will change play calling for the remainder of the game due to differences of downs, field position, time outs, possession, score… so on and so forth.

The earlier the mistakes, the more time for corrective action, for something to swing in your own favor, or continued mistakes.

There are too many variables to predict the difference of any action, or mistakes.

It’s spelled "S-h-u-f-e-l-t"

by JShufelt on Apr 2, 2009 8:38 AM PDT up reply actions

Agreed about too many variables

Which proves my point. A mistake at the beginning of the game can still cost you just as big.

Think about that Harrison TD at the end of the first half of the Super Bowl. 10-14 point swing. Was that a smaller mistake than the blown coverage on Fitzgerald at the end of the game because that happened in the first half?

by Avinash Kunnath on Apr 2, 2009 9:45 AM PDT up reply actions

I agree, but when it gets later in the game, mistakes have a bigger impact due to the inability to recover them. The time where you need to play the sharpest, cleanest, and most efficient, is at the end of the game.

But the best teams in the country will play sharp, clean and efficient for all 4 quarters.

Bishop Leads Charge
Rook[ies] to follow.

The losses of Zack Follett, Worrell Williams and Anthony Felder will be felt in the locker room just as much as on the field. All three guys, especially Follett and Williams, were team leaders and arguably the heart and soul of the team.

But there is another linebacker who is relishing the chance to be a leader — Devin Bishop. Now that he figures to start, the already outspoken senior should command even more respect from his teammates.

Then pop in the night cuz it’s meant to be ours
We keep a fade away shot cuz we ballin

Lil mama, I owe you just like the flowers
Girl you the **** with all that goodies’ powers

(Flo Rida)

From the top of the pole I watch her go [down]
She got me throwin my money a[round]
Ain’t nothin more beautiful to be [found]
It’s goin down down.
From the top of the pole I watch her go [down]
She got me throwin my money [around]
Ain’t nothin more beautiful to be [found]
It’s goin down down

Hey
Shawty must know I’m not playin
My money love her like a numba one fan
Don’t look at my mouth, let her talk to my fans
My Benjamin Frank-a-lins
A couple of grands, I got rubber bands
My paper planes makin a dance
Get dirty all night, that’s part of my thing
Keep building castles that’s made out of sand
She’s amazing, the fire blazing
Hotter than Cajun
Girl won’t you move a lil closer?
Time to get paid, it’s maximum wage
That body belong on a poster
I’m in a daze, that bottom is wavin’ at me
Like da** it, I know you
You wanna show like a gun out of holster
Tell me whatever and I’ll be your roper

(Flo Rida)
You spin my head right round, right round
When you go down, when you go down down
(Katy Perry)

I’m spendin my money
I’m out of control
Somebody help me
She’s takin my bank roll.
But I’m king of the club
And I’m wearin the crown
Poppin these bottles
Touching these models
Watchin they **** go down down
down down, down down [this line x4]

(Flo Rida)
You spin my head right round, right round
When you go down, when you go down down
