I guess Pitt, to keep my bracket respectable
but after yesterday, it’s officially toast. Realistically, I don’t have a dog in this fight, and I’ve pretty much checked out of this tournament.
So, basically, you gotta Go Bears!

I submitted my legitimate picks to the CGB group. In a group of friends, I submitted joke picks. None of my final four selections (Cal, Wake Forest, LSU, or VCU) made it past the second round.

In addition, I only got 3 of 16 teams for the sweet 16, and none for the elite 8.

I was joking though. I picked Cal because I’m a cal fan, Wake Forest because my friend who is running the bracket is a die hard WF fan and I wanted them to lose to Cal, VCU because I rewarded them for beating UCLA, and LSU because I love the state of Louisiana. I also had Robert Morris and Stephen F. Austin going far, under the logic of ‘If your school name is just the name of a person, you have to be a sports powerhouse.’ That hasn’t really worked out.

These stadiums are really empty
They really need to go back to regular basketball arenas. There’s barely 15,000 people there.

The game is being played in the Cardinals’ amazing new(ish) stadium. While the versatility of it is a marvel, I really don’t think it was right for a basketball game. It took me awhile to realize why the lighting in the stadium looked so weird.

They used the Metrodome in Minneapolis last round, and the Colts stadium in this round. The final 4 is at the Lions stadium, Ford Field. It’s going to be depressingly empty.

Does anyone else here hate how CBS does sports?
Every single chance possible they take an ad break. They have no respect for the game or the fans. This doesn’t just go for the NCAA tournament. Every single sport they cover they milk every single last opportunity for commercials. Say what you want about ESPN, but they at least respect the viewer. For football, if the game is close at the end, and a timeout is called to talk strategy, ESPN won’t go to commercials. They will have the analysts talk about potential strategy in that situation. CBS hears the word timeout and rushes to fit 400 ads in a minute. I can’t stand that.

It costs a lot to broadcast March Madness because the rights to broadcast anything on a regular network are much higher. It’s much cheaper to do it on cable. CBS has to cram the ads in or they don’t have enough to pay off the league.
It’s why most major sports have moved the majority of their games to cable, and naturally ESPN.
by Avinash on Mar 28, 2009 2:32 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs

I really don’t find it that bad on ESPN. They are eerily unevil for a major corporation. They must be doing shady things behind closed doors. I mean they neglect the west coast but that’s just stupid, not evil.

Young one, just remember ESPN is owned by Disney, and today’s Disney is evil in every possible way.
by Avinash on Mar 28, 2009 3:01 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah I know that. Disney has a history of being evil. But how much does Disney control what ESPN does?
Toot Toot
by rollonubears on Mar 28, 2009 3:07 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
ESPN in 2009 is radically different from ESPN in 1999. More importantly, the same corporate policies enacted at Disney are very similar to the ones enacted in Bristol. Acquire everything, don’t allow people in the company to interact outside the behemoth. It’s a one-way street with the WWL.

That being said, Hitler drew Disney cartoons in his underground bunker. I’m sure Disney will demand royalties from his corpse for copyright infringement.

Earlier in the year, during one of Cal’s games the announcer didn’t pay attention to states, and repeatedly mentioned how Theo Robertson (who is actually from Pittsburg, CA) was from Pittsburgh, PA. He almost brought it up as much as these announcers brought up the Bronx. Best quote: “Theo Robertson from Pittsburgh! Showing a little steel in him!”
And you could tell he was so proud he had thought of that. It was classic.

www.californiagoldenblogs.com
by HydroTech on Mar 28, 2009 6:29 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Refs swallow their whistles on the final play unless it’s really blatant. They don’t like to put a guy on the line to win the game on the final possession.
I’m not even sure it was a charge. He pulled up before the contact.
by Avinash on Mar 28, 2009 6:32 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Okay. Maybe it wasn’t a charge. However, I don’t like the idea of ref’s swallowing their whistles on the final play unless it’s really blatant. If there is foul or charge or penalty or whatever, it NEEDS to be called. Just because the game is in its final seconds does not mean each team gets a few seconds of lawless play where they can commit infractions at will without fear of repercussions.
Basketball officiating is whack.
www.californiagoldenblogs.com
by HydroTech on Mar 29, 2009 12:59 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Basketball officiating is tougher than in any sport. Deciding what is and what is not a foul is very difficult, because the ball and players are moving much quicker than in football. So when a call is not blatant and can go either way, refs usually swallow the whistles because (a) they face severe recrimination for essentially ending the game on a ticky-tack call & (b) everyone (basketball fans in general) want players to decide the final outcome on the court.
Just ask Mavs fans how they feel about Game 5 of the 2006 NBA Finals.
