Post-game notes:
Cal, making its school-record fourth straight NCAA Tournament appearance and seventh overall, advances to
the program’s first Sweet Sixteen and is now 4-6 overall in NCAA Tournament games.
The Bears’ previous NCAA wins before 2009 came in first-round wins in 1993 (62-47 win over Kansas) and 2008 (77-60 win over San Diego)
Cal head coach Joanne Boyle won her third NCAA Tournament game and her first second-round game (3-4
overall: 3-3 Cal; 0-1 Richmond).
The Bears tied the program record for most victories in a season with 27, which was set last year when the Bears
posted a 27-7 mark. They are 27-6 in 2008-09.
The Bears are now 1-2 against Virginia and 7-9 in program history against ACC schools. Cal’s last victory over
an ACC school came Dec. 21, 1993, when they defeated Duke 72-66. Joanne Boyle was a first-year assistant
coach for Duke at that time.

Post-game kwotes:
California Coach Joanne Boyle
“We faced a really tough Virginia team. (They had) a lot of athleticism and their quickness you saw in transition. (I am) just really excited about how we are playing basketball right now. The composure we had, our defense, rebounding, free throws, everything; I just thought it was one of those great games. I am excited to be going on to the next step.”
On keys to winning the game
“The key points to the game were to keep them off the boards, keep them off the free-throw lines, limit their transitions, and maintain our poise and composure.”
On balance of team play
“It was great. It was fun to watch and I knew this was in my team. It was there, and I think the emphasis this week was just sharing the basketball.”
Senior forward Ashley Walker
On tonight’s performance
“We just said that we didn’t want this to be our last game. We don’t have anything to lose and we just played with our hearts and souls.”
Senior center Devanei Hampton
On Virginia’s defensive strategy to go one-on-one at the post
“One-on-one coverage is like a green light for the both of us, so that was basically it.”
On matching up with Virginia center Aisha Mohammed
“I thrive off of being real physical. Aisha Mohammed, she is a really, really good player and she was very physical, and that was a battle for me, we just had fun.”

Peckham receives honor:
BERKELEY – California redshirt freshman goalkeeper Stephanie Peckham was lauded as the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Co-Player of the Week, the conference office announced Monday. This is Peckham’s second MPSF accolade of the 2009 season.
Peckham helped the Golden Bears (27-4, 2-2 MPSF) to three wins at the Aztec Invitational over the weekend. The Coto de Caza, Calif., native garnered 38 total saves over the course of three games. In the 13-5 win over No. 12 Hartwick, Peckham had 16 saves and only allowed two goals in three quarters of work. Thanks to her eight save and two goals allowed performance in roughly 27 minutes in the cage, the Bears defeated Brown 11-7. In the final game of the weekend against No. 18 Indiana, Peckham played the entire game, grabbing 14 saves and only allowing one Hoosier goal.

Mens golf gets 5th:
TUCSON, Ariz. – California fought its way up to a fifth-place finish Monday at the Omni Tucson National Golf Club as Eric Mina ended as the Bears’ golfer in a tie for 5th overall (-3), sinking three birdies in a 1-under final round.
“The guys did a very good job; they were very competitive today. We went in and just played some solid golf all the way through. Anybody that shot par or better really had it going,” said Head Coach Steve Desimone. “Overall we got the chance to get back after it and we played a strong final round. It’s good to be back on track. But we’re glad to give up Bermuda greens and get out of the desert.”
John Murphy put down four birdies that were offset by two bogies and a double bogey on the fifth hole, finishing even on the day and in the tournament (T11). Stephen Hale fired an even-par 72 to end in a tie for 25th (3). Michael Jensen shot a plus-5 final round to end in 43rd (7) and George Gandranata finished Monday at plus-6 in a tie for 68th (+13).
New Mexico won the event at -14, including a -9 from individual champion Nick Guyer, who carded a 66-71-70 – 207.
Next up for the Bears is the Western Intercollegiate this Sun.-Tues., hosted by San Jose State at Pasatiempo Golf Club in Santa Cruz, Calif.

A few years back Ohio Bear and I (along with Mrs. CALumbus Bear, a Cal alum herself with no less than 3 degrees from Cal) attended a women’s lacross game when Cal came to play tOSU. We donned as much Cal clothing as possible. It was fun, we won, and after the Cal team parents stopped coming by and asking “why are you freaks here, who are you related to?” it was interesting to chat with them. The team actually thanked us for making lots of noise and shouting inappropriate things at the Buckeyes.
But looks like we won’t be able to make it tonight :-(. I could make it by myself, but I don’t think the parents would ever stop looking at me funny.

Usually the fans appreciating the hootin’ and hollerin’, but the referees very rarely do. During women’s basketball and field hockey games, referees have yelled at me and friends during the game to stop or to focus on the positives.

Positive. During a free throw attempt by the opposing team, a referee yelled to stop singing “it’s a small world” to the diminutive player taking the shot and to start just cheering for our team.

Wow. You must have invented, on that very day, being loud and obnoxious whilst trying to interfere with the other team shooting free throws. The next game someone brought long balloons and it was off to the races. So the ref was hoping you’d instead chant “we hope you make a good effort at this free throw but that we get the rebound”?? Madness!

Interview with freshmen on womens bball team:
LOS ANGELES – During the open locker room period on Sunday at the Galen Center, CalBears.com caught up with Cal’s two freshmen – Angelei Aguirre and Casey Morris to chat with them about the NCAA Tournament experience as a first year.
CalBears.com: What were your thoughts on Selection Monday?
Angelei Aguirre: I was just really excited. When you’re a little kid, you always watch the Big Dance on T.V. But to actually be there was so much fun.
Casey Morris: I was excited. I didn’t know it would be like the way it was – with so many fans and friends coming out to the Club Room at Haas Pavilion to support us. It was exciting to be sitting there with my team, waiting for the big announcement. The adrenaline was going and everything.
CalBears.com: The team has played at the Galen Center several times already this year, so the arena wasn’t so new. But did you have any expectations coming into the Tournament?
AA: I really don’t know. I loved watching it on T.V. so I just pictured that it would be exciting to play in the Tournament. It’s the basketball that everyone wants to play.
CM: I’ve always wanted to play in the NCAA Tournament. It’s been a dream of mine for a long time. I was excited to get here. Every team is so talented. You have to come out with 100 percent.

loses credibility by listing 3 USC running backs, imo. The best one (Johnson) fumbles like no tomorrow (okay maybe that’s a bit of an exageration). Furd’s no 2 RB is pretty decent. I think Blount’s overrated.
Heaps and Hinder...come on down!
U$C really does itself a disservice with the running back rotation. They are all rated so high because of potential, but none of them have really done anything. McKnight gets hurt every time he touches the field.
You would think this would work out well for Cal recruiting running backs. Come to Cal and lead the conference in rushing yards or go to U$C and get a quarter of the carries while being stuck in a crappy rotation.
Im all about the Syd Pro Quo
Yes and no, I think the evidence shows that even if you’re a backup at U$C you can and will get drafted.

I’m a big fan, but I don’t wear spandex. I opt for the baggy trail bike shorts and I’m sure they are longer than Twist’s running attire. I lose speed, but I recoop some Man Points. Riding out on counrtry roads is a lot of fun, just as long as you don’t get hit. Plus, you know, you’re actually moving and not “spinning” your wheels. My wife likes to go too, thereby making this family fun. She doesn’t like to go downhill at 50 mph like I do though. :)

So any of you avid runners have a good training routine for running a fast mile?
I’d like to get my mile into the 5 minutes . . . . as in 5 minutes 59 seconds. I know that sux but believe me, I “lost my way.”
Right now I’m about 1 minute off. I probly need to do more sprint work cuz as it is I just run 3 – 3.5 miles every other day without really pushing myself (8 min. 10 sec miles).
Any suggestions?
by oaktownmario on Mar 24, 2009 4:10 PM PDT up reply actions
I wouldnt say that 5:59 is bad in any way shape or form. Im not even sure if Im there. Last I tried I ran a 6 flat, but that was last year. I think I could have done better, but I was on a treadmill where the max was 6 flat.
why would you want to run a fast mile at this point? are you racing? I just run for fun. I focus less on maximizing my imle time and mor eon having fun.
But as far as helping push yourself, I find that running with a friend helps push me. I am a competitive person and when I run with another person, it helps push me. When I am by myself I tend to run a lot slower. So, maybe find a friend? Not me.

There’s nobody on this board that has researched running shoes more than me, I promise that. I obsess about them.
The answer is it depends on the severity of your pronation. In my case the NB858’s and the Brooks Adrenaline’s work really well, especially combined with the insoles.
I have a lot of ideas about how to run a fast mile. There are lots of good ideas on www.runnersworld.com about building speed and/or endurance. The key to speed seems to be a combination of short sprint work 1-2 days/week mixed in with long endurance runs 2-3 days/week.
In short, a 4 day running schedule to build speed would be:
Day 1: Race pace (say 7:30 pace)
Day 2: Tempo runs of Race Pace minus 30 seconds (7:00)
Day 3: Off
Day 4: Interval/Sprint work, Race Pace minus 1 min (6:30) for 1/2 mile, then 1/4 mile at Race Pace plus 30 seconds (8:00), repeat 4 times
Day 5: Off
Day 6: cross train
Day 7: Off

My race pace is 8:30/mile….yours, if you did the half marathon at 1:30:00 is 6:50/mile…….I clearly can’t touch that!
So you would adjust the example above to reflect your own ability, the spirit behind the idea is to do tempo runs 30 seconds faster than race pace, and interval runs and 1 min faster for a short distance and alternate with a jog.

No reason for wanting a fast mile
other than it just gives me some motivation to run. People say running is a love/hate relationship. I find it to be a hate/hate relationship but started doing it cuz I felt lazy and was getting too fat for my own liking.
So running a fast mile is just motivation basically.
by oaktownmario on Mar 24, 2009 4:52 PM PDT up reply actions
If you need motivation, you might choose to pick a time or distance goal rather than just a fast mile. Increasing your distance will help your speed anyway, especially if you follow the example above and mix in interval and tempo runs.

if you really really want to get into cycling…
drop 1100+ on a road bike that’s upgradeable if you want it to be but more than satisfactory as is. You’ll go fast with minimal effort, which to me makes cycling a lot of fun. I just got back into it two weekends ago, as I’m not a fan of cold/nasty weather biking like some folks are.
last fall, my wife and I biked from Squaw Valley down to Tahoe City alongside the Truckee River…and it was AWESOME. A lot of fun – one of the best activities we’ve ever done.
Heaps and Hinder...come on down!
I hear Mt. Diablo is great fun.
But, I don’t bike. Too much money is involved to get started. I’d rather spend the thousand on plane tickets to Japan/Australia/Brazil or whereever else I have a momentary interest in.

Random fun fact…. er, more like random fact, that I find fun… because I’m a dork.
On a clear day i’ve heard that you can see more land than anywhere else on earth from its peak. This is due to the sacramento and san fernando valleys surrounding it. In fact, on a clear day you can see Mt. Shasta.

I’ve been to the top of Mt. Diablo on a clear day and it is absurdly beautiful. Not sure if you can see te most land or wahtever, but you can see REALLLLLLY far into the valley.

that sounds like perfect mileage. If the commute is hilly, plan on showering at work. This, of course, makes you add weight and makes your ride slightly harder.

$1100 sounds like a lot to get started, no? Are used bikes a bad idea? What about a triathlon bike instead of a road bike?

Totes don’t get a triathlon bike if you’re interesting in weekend recreation riding. And maybe look into getting a used bike first, before putting down that kind of cash on a brand new one.
I got my bike on craigslist in practically brand new condition for $600. Brand new it would’ve cost $1200.

I bought a used hybrid off craigslist (a Raleigh) for $175. Since I only ride for fun/to complement running, it’s been perfect for me. If you want to go for long rides like carp is talking about, that’s not going to cut it.

I figured as much, the best solution for 20 mile road rides is a road bike, not a tri bike or a hybrid, right?

hybrid bikes (trail/road combo) are dumb imo.
tri bike I’m not sure about.
road bike = meant to be ridden on paved roads only.
Heaps and Hinder...come on down!
What’s wrong with hybrids? I don’t know a lot about bikes, but they seem to strike a good balance between the two.
I outworthless the Maharg.
I don’t know enough to comment extensively like I know what I’m talking about, but here’s my opinion:
-trail biking is borderline crazy – you are bound to eat shit and probably do it somewhere where no one else can help you.
-road biking is dangerous too (cars) but I think it’s safer and you go real fast with a proper road bike.
-hybrid biking really doesn’t help you do trail biking all that well with it’s modest tires/suspension, and it definitely slows you down significantly (tires + handlebar locations) on the road.
Heaps and Hinder...come on down!
Got it. I pretty much stick to roads, and I’m not looking to go particularly fast – the tradeoff in terms of sturdiness and more upright posture is worth it for me, I think.

Two reasons for irritations with bikers, beyond that I got no beef with them.
1) critical mass

Excerpts from YO’s article:
To me, Cal’s preseason ranking and what the Bears ultimately do this season depends on the passing game. If Cal gets better play from its quarterback and wide receivers, everything else seems to be in place for a run at the Pac-10 title and a top-10 or top-15 ranking. If the Bears have to once again rely to heavily on their defense and don’t have the threat of an aerial attack to help Jahvid Best, they’ll probably once again be a borderline top-25 team.
My hunch is the passing game will improve. If nothing else, experience matters. Kevin Riley has looked good so far this spring, and the growing pains the receivers went through last year should only help their on-field production this year.
I’d put Cal somewhere between No. 15 and No. 20 nationally to begin the season.

Bleacher Report has a Cal Pro Day Wrapup
LINK
Back to Mack. He ran a nice 5.17 40, looked good in his other workout drills and great in his positional drills. He held the rapt attention of nearly everyone who was there and when he was done, I’d say 75 percent of the people there took off.
That’s not to say there was no interest in anyone else. But Mack was the biggest target for attention there and clearly someone who won’t drop too far in April’s draft. I get the sense that he could go anywhere from the middle of the first to the end, but I don’t think he gets out of it unclaimed.
Mack ended his tape in a film room working some chalk and going over tape with representatives from three teams. He was easily in there for two hours, maybe more. It was great to talk to him afterwards and he was definitely pleased with his day and ready to stop training for Pro Days and Combines and start training for actual football again.
After Mack was finished, the remaining scouts were treated to a pretty sharp workout by quarterback Nate Longshore. Longshore ran around a 4.7/5.1 40-yard dash (I timed it by hand, but was unable to verify afterwards) earlier in the day.
Warming up he seemed a bit off but once the drills started, Longshore was sharp, throwing the ball with good arm strength, accuracy and touch. I was impressed the way he worked and not only made himself look good, but his receivers as well.

Scout.com's Top 300 Athletes for 2010
Scout.com just came out with their initial rankings for the class of 2010
In the top 300, by state the counts are:
State In 300
TX 57
CA 45
FL 34
GA 14
PA 13
SC 11
MI 10
OH 10
IL 7
IN 7
MD 7
While its no surprise to see TX and CA at the top, I guess I’ll say that I’m excited we’ve boosted our presence in TX over the last few years. I still think that there are clearly enough top athletes in CA that we should be able to protect our domicile and get kids literally in our own backyard.

Oaks Christian has a lot of great prospects this year (and most years), but since the other kids from that school are listing other schools among their favorites, I wouldn’t be surprised to see 2 or more of them end up at the same school and/or influence the decisions of their classmates away from Cal. Hope I’m wrong, but we saw that happen to U$C and fUCLA this year.

this smells a bit fishy
59 come from the South. Combined with Texas’ 57 and you have covered nearly entire Rivals subscription network.
CA has nearly 37 million people. Florida has half that. S. Carolina and Georgia combined are 2/3 less than CA. Texas is 1/3 less than CA.
My point: Sure, they all have great players. But by population alone CA should lead and lead by a comfortable margin. We’ve been through this multiple times, but Cal/Orgeon/Utah recruits don’t get the same lurvin as LSU/Bama/Florida recruits. Or anyone listing Texas, Miami, FSU, OU, or USC.
I bet nearly all of the midwest guys list either michigan/ohio st/penn st/SEC/OU/UT schools. There aren’t too many Brazinski’s out there.
Heaps and Hinder...come on down!
There are a ton of confounding variables, but here’s the most obvious one: everyone in the South plays/watches/breathes football (I think a Deadspin writer once complained that “everyone here just wants to talk about the SEC and Jesus”). This isn’t the case in California. At all.
I outworthless the Maharg.
Agreed, I was about to post this comment
To play Devil’s Advocate:
I think a lot of the great athletes in California pursue other sports. In Texas, Louisiana, Alabama, etc. you play football. It is what you do if you can. In California, a lot of the good athletes pursue baseball, basketball, soccer, snowboarding, lacrosse, academics, whatever, here football is not king and therefore does not monopolize our talent pool. Hence, a disproportionately small number of players are represented.
They're after our precious bodily fluids
while the jist of your points I agree with and acknowledge, I don’t think it is the major reason behind the Rivals subscription bias. Just cause they play it and talk about all day long, doesn’t mean they are significantly better – especially regarding the uber hype from the 4/5 star guys and the upper 3/low 4 star guys…even down to the 2 star guys. The redonkulous star rating system drives these Top whatever lists and also the end of the year recruiting rankings. No thanks, I think that’s a load a bull. I’m not saying they aren’t talented or that I wouldn’t like to have ‘em, I just think they miss a great deal of other less heralded players who don’t list a storied college football program.
Case in point: If Best and Lynch were from Mobile, AL…they might be the most heralded recruits in the country. Instead they somehow got 4 stars by both Rivals and Scout.
Heaps and Hinder...come on down!
Here are some numbers
I’m going to invent a new statistic called a carp ratio. It’s the ratio of state population to high school football programs in that state, divided by a thousand to make it easier to read. Obviously a lower carp ratio means more emphasis on football.
(Numbers are from ESPN’s “Great State Debate”)
California: 33.18
Texas: 19.92
Florida: 26.14
Pennsylvania: 16.53
Louisiana: 11.47
Virginia: 22
Georgia: 24
Ohio: 16.08
Sort of a trend there…let me see if I can find some more data…
I outworthless the Maharg.
Larry Scott appointed as the incoming Pac-10 commissioner.
“Our search committee was most impressed with Larry’s broad range of leadership experiences in both men’s and women’s sports, as well as his extensive success in representing the commercial interest of men’s and women’s tennis,” said Bob Bowlsby, athletic director of Stanford and head of the search committee. “He was the architect of a highly-effective turnaround of women’s tennis over the last six years and created a compelling vision that has served the sport and its athletes extremely well. We are also very pleased to bring on such a great advocate for both men’s and women’s sports.”
Under Scott’s leadership, the WTA secured television partnerships with the major US networks and renewed its international television partnership with Eurosport, which broadcasts women’s tennis to 54 countries and more than 104 million homes. Scott’s career in tennis began as a professional tennis player on the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) circuit, where he played for three years and won one tournament. Scott then spent a decade in leadership and senior management positions within the ATP, serving in the posts of Chief Operating Officer, President of ATP Properties and Executive Vice President of the International Group.
Whose domicile? OUR DOMICILE!
hmmm…we swooped in on the women’s tennis guy? he’s had success in the marketing arena, but eh…he’s a far cry from Condi & Sandy Aldersen.
He’s was a tennis All American at Harvard…sounds like the perfect guy to rub elbows with major P10 commish committe leaders (Furd prez John Hennessey and Furd AD Bowlsby).
Let’s see what this guy is all about. It’s past the time to improve the league image – particularly in the best sport on the planet.
Heaps and Hinder...come on down!
you mean Mr. Women’s Tennis will make the impressive Pac10 Women’s basketball teams into the 3rd major sport? That would be awesome and would be a miracle.
Football drives the world of college sports, and we need some serious improvement in our conference.
Heaps and Hinder...come on down!
I was actually asking whether, when you referred to “the best sport on the planet” you meant women’s basketball!
But seriously, I think there’s a lot of potential for Pac-10 women’s basketball to become a much more popular sport. Although I’m a huge Cal fan, and a woman, I never followed the women’s game until a couple of years ago. Cal was never any good, and we always got pounded by Stanfurd. For a long time, the Pac-10 has just been Stanfurd and the nine dwarfs. I went to my first women’s game last year, when I got free tickets in with my football season tickets. My friends and I had a great time, and we’ve gone to a number of games since.
The Stanfurd games the past two years have been awesome, with huge crowds and really exciting games. Last year the women’s game against Stanfurd drew more fans than the men’s game. Granted, the fact that it’s Stanfurd is a big part of the draw: both the rivalry and the fact the they are the team to beat in the conference. But Cal’s been averaging something like 3,000 fans a game, which is big in the Pac-10. And with ASU looking good, and the LA schools showing some potential, the conference could become a lot more competitive in the next few years, and get a lot more national attention.
The women’s game is never going to draw the kind of interest that the men do, but if you look at schools like Tennessee, Duke and North Carolina, its a pretty big sport. I would really like to see the Pac-10 focus on improving the profile of women’s basketball.
I thought it was “pounded.”

that would be cool. Baseball’s also very strong in this conference…softball too.
I think women’s basketball might be better off if it wasn’t forced fed to people who didn’t want it. IMO, they have pretty extensive women’s hoops coverage for the audience that watches it. In most cases, more exposure improves the popularity. Here, I think it turned off the casual sport fan. To be clear,
highly exciting games (like Furd-Cal) should be on a decent national TV network at primetime. But let’s cut the ESPN ticker stuff on the bottom. This would highlight the very best in women’s hoops without boring the audience.
I don’t know if that makes sense or not – I barely even watch Cal men’s basketball.
Heaps and Hinder...come on down!
Sorry. It never crossed my mind that you wanted me to take one of your comments seriously.
I actually agree with your point. The NCAA doesn’t handle the women’s tournament very well. On weekends, when both the men and women are playing, the women’s tournament is completely overshadowed. And I think having the women’s final after the men’s is ridiculous. Once the men’s tournament is over, I think people completely tune out to college sports until football season. Maybe they could eliminate the conference tournaments for the women and start their NCAA tournament a week earlier?
It just feels like a disservice.
I dunno, there hasn’t even been basketball this week so far. Why not have women’s tourney now?
JAI HO!
Actually, the women’s tournament IS on right now. There were games last night (Cal 99, Viriginia 73, in case you didn’t hear). And there are more games tonight – in fact I think they’re on even as we type. But they really can’t put all the women’s games on weekdays, because players are actually supposed to be students. If they are on the road four days a week for three weeks, that whole student thing is kind of hard to pull off.
The amount of coverage of women’s hoops is insanely large for the number of people who are interested in my opinion
There are several women’s sports that should be more heavily promoted (at least in California) because (1) a lot more girls seem to play them / be passionate about them (2) they aren’t a substantially inferior product to the men’s version of the same sport (like basketball). I would say that women’s college soccer, volleyball, water polo, softball, and even swimming fall into this group. I think that networks would be better off going for these niche audiences rather than trying to get the casual sports fan hooked on women’s basketball.

You make some good points, and I totally respect your lack of interest in women’s basketball. In my view, it’s all a matter of personal taste, with no right or wrong. But perhaps you might want to reconsider the “substantially inferior product” concept. College football is a substantially inferior product to the NFL. College basketball is a substantially inferior product to the NBA. Any NFL or NBA team would make mincemeat out of any college team. But we all enjoy the college games anyway. We know they are “inferior,” but we enjoy them for what they are. Arguably all women’s sports are substantially inferior to all men’s sports because the men are stronger and faster, can jump higher, etc. Any men’s team would make mincemeat out of any women’s team. But there’s no reason people can’t enjoy the women’s games for what the are. Most people I know have little interest in college of sports of any kind, and regard me as a kind of eccentric for my preference for college football over the NFL. In my opinion, they just don’t know what they’re missing!
I think you are right on that this is a matter of opinion. I think you are right on the inferiority thing in one sense, but not in another sense.
Certainly, I can appreciate that the average college football game is inferior in play quality to the average NFL game. But if you put two college football teams together, I can’t really perceive that difference or at least the there are other factors that help me overcome this knowledge. To use college basketball, the games inferiority actually can make it more entertaining – give a college guy a wide open jumper and he might miss it, in the NBA that isn’t the case. Or think about swimming – sure women swim a lot slower then men, but that doesn’t mean that the races are considerably less entertaining. To me, soccer is pretty much soccer whether it is being played by men or women – the tension that one goal might be the game is the same. In these cases, to me whatever competitive aspects exist are able to overcome whatever perception I have that the game just isn’t as good as the pro (or men’s) version of the same game. But again, this is perception, I am sure someone who appreciates the minute-by-minute beauty of top level soccer more than I do might have find the women’s game tough to watch.
Personally, my problem with women’s basketball as entertainment is that so many components that make the men’s game entertaining are missing, that no matter how competitive or important the game is, it just doesn’t really overcome that issue to me. It’s the same game, but somehow it just isn’t. (I can give very specific reasons why I dislike the women’s game, but would classify it as a whole product issue.)
Based on this though, there are two things in the promotion of the game that make me really hate the coverage of women’s basketball as a whole:
(1) The insistence that the women’s game is somehow improving more rapidly than the men’s game in general quality (it isn’t). For example, making a big deal out of it when someone dunks.
(2) The insistence that women are more fundamentally sound than men.
So, you are correct, there is no right or wrong here in what we like, but I think there is a right or wrong in the sense that they probably could promote / televise sports that I enjoy more, including other women’s sports, rather than using stale arguments to try to convince me that I should enjoy women’s basketball.
(Also, I should note that for anything at a certain point my Cal pride takes over, and I will watch the games no matter if I find the games themselves entertaining or not. I still can’t see myself going out of my way to watch the Sweet 16 game.)

I’ve seen lots of commentary by bloggers and mainstream media alike (Bill Simmons comes to mind) complaining about how the Women’s game is marketed, and whenever someone makes the argument the first thing that comes to my mind is “The women’s game is actually marketed?”
Maybe I’m just missing it, but if I didn’t intentionally follow Cal women’s basketball because they’re so good, I wouldn’t know anything about the women’s game, college or pro. I just don’t see it advertised in any serious way. Maybe that’s a recent change.

I think my experience probably proves your point. Although I grew up as a huge baseball fan and a huge Cal football fan, basketball has never really interested me. I’ve never paid any attention to the NBA (except from civic pride when our Sacramento Kings had a good run a few year ago). The only men’s basketball team I’ve ever followed is Cal, and that’s only because it’s my school, and I root for them in anything. But I started following the women’s team last year and I just love it. I don’t know or care enough about the men’s game to draw comparisons. I just enjoy the women’s games because they’re fun.
I do agree with norcalnick that I’ve never noticed the over-marketing. And anyway, I don’t think having women’s games on TV detracts from the men’s games. The men always get the best slots and vastly more attention. All those cable stations have to fill their airtime with something. I figure, better women’s basketball than more “world series of poker,” bowling, cage fighting, or whatever else.
I don’t think that the men’s game isn’t the victim here, but rather women’s sports that get pretty much no coverage while women’s basketball gets a lot.

I don’t watch women’s basketball because it’s really boring and slow, no matter how sound their fundamentals are.

the execution was excellent. One of the best offensive performances I’ve ever seen from a Cal Bball team, male or female.

I'm just saying it was a great basketball game
not a great women’s basketball game, a great basketball game. It was very fast-paced, high-energy compared to ALL basketball games, not just to women’s basketball games.
I understand people’s criticisms about women’s bball (not that I necessarily agree with them), but they don’t apply to Monday night’s game.

It’s not actually fair to say Cal’s “never” been any good. We had a nice little run in the early 90s, but it didn’t last.

It’d also be nice to have more students showing up to the women’s basketball game. Hearing about and seeing photos of student sections for big games (Tennessee vs. Duke, 2007) at other schools just astounds me, since for us it’s basically just the Cal Spirit groups there at the games, despite how good our team (is)/(can be). Students get in for free, and given that the schedule is usually the same sort of schedule as the men’s games, it’s not like students wouldn’t show up.
I’m not saying having 3,000 fans a game isn’t nice, I’m just saying that it’s nice having more than applause and people standing up to give a home court advantage.

When I lived in Santa Barbara, I went to a lot of UCSB women’s bball games because my neighbor was a booster. Those games were great and had a lot of intensity. A lot of things that I like about college hoops (that are missing from the NBA) are even more prevalent in women’s college hoops….the spirit, energy, intensity. Sure you might not get crazy break-away dunks, but its really good sport to watch.

ok, so wazzu got 4 guys on the 1st team. either they’re all really smart, or wazzu is an exceptionally easy school. either way, i think comparing GPAs across different schools is kinda meaningless. heck, it’s hard enough comparing them across different majors.
and speaking of majors, does anyone have any idea what “Movement Studies” (Aron Baynes) might entail? at least with “Health and Fitness Studies” (Daven Harmeling), I know he’s majoring in P.E.

how about Kneziweaewifijcijc’s Interdisciplinary Studies.
Hmm…let’s take a bunch of classes that aren’t really related and call it a major!
Heaps and Hinder...come on down!
my friend was the first family member to go to college. His parents came here from Mexico. Despite speaking Spanish his entire life and being fully consumed in Latino culture, he decided to major in Spanish so he could “learn” about it from a bunch of white guys with Ph.D.’s…of course, he had time to win the Super Bowl in Madden like 56,000 times, play basketball for days, and graduate with honors. Ai! Still, he making progress nonetheless.
Heaps and Hinder...come on down!
no…nor am I saying that all Spanish speakers are coasting if they major in Spanish. My comment wasn’t a stereotype, rather it was a direct fact. Even he admitted it!
I will say, however, majoring in languages, especially one that is already native to you, is one of the easiest paths to go in college. Many (but certainly not all) struggle to obtain bachelor’s-level jobs afterwards. I think that’s pretty much undisputable.
Heaps and Hinder...come on down!
do you know much about the Netherlands? seriously, I’m debating between moving there or London, and am trying to gain as much info as possible.
They're after our precious bodily fluids
I lived there for a year with a Dutch family as an exchange student when I was in high school. I absolutely love the place. People tend to think only of Amsterdam, but Amsterdam is kind of like the San Francisco of the Netherlands — the cool, lefty, kind of wild part of the country. The rest of the country is much less extreme. Everyone over the age of about 10 speaks fluent English, so it’s easy for English speakers to get along. You find bus drivers who speak 3-4 languages. Of course, if you want to live there, you would want to learn Dutch. It’s more socialist than Britain is now, although they’ve gotten a bit more conservative in the last few years. The weather stinks, but it also stinks in Britain, so that’s not much of a choice. I’d be happy to live there again. But you’re going to have to like speed skating to get along there. It’s huge.
I also love London. But it’s super expensive. I think Amsterdam is pretty expensive too, but I didn’t live there. I was in a small town an hour’s train ride away.
Is that your native language? If not, that’s a different story. If so, then my point is still valid. You’re a lawyer, right? Law schools accept many different majors. Nonetheless, you are fortunate to be where you are.
My friend majored in art history and now sells furniture retail.
Another one majored in psych and works the front counter at PG&E.
Heaps and Hinder...come on down!
Yes, Dad
You sound just like my father. I was a double major in History and Dutch — two of the most useful subjects on earth. My dad spent the whole four years I was at Cal telling me that I was going to end up as a waitress, and pestering me to be a business major. Gag! It was only my mother (a history and English double major) telling him to shut up, and my plan to go to law school that kept him from completely blowing a gasket.
Then this really interesting survey came out eariler this year from the Wall Street Journal about the connection between salaries and majors. I was so sorry my dad had passed away, so I couldn’t wave it in front of him and gloat. (I hasten to say that I was and am also really sorry for other many, many other reasons.)
The WSJ did a survey of starting salaries and mid-career salaries (10 years after graduation) by major and by school. They only looked at people who had Bachelors degrees, but no graduate school. Turns out, there is almost no correlation between salary and major. Instead, the key factor is where you went to school. For example, the average starting salary of history majors, nation-wide was $39,200. For business majors, $43,000. But 10 years out of school, history majors were at $71,000, and business majors at $72,100. (They didn’t survey Dutch majors for some reason.) The big exception was engineers, who did better than everybody else.
But the salary differences among schools was huge. For all majors combined, Cal was $59,900 starting and $112,000 after ten years. San Francisco State, to pick a school in the same area, was $47,300 and $86,400.
Here’s a link to the WSJ article, which in turn has links to all their charts:
http://finance.yahoo.com/college-education/article/105499/Ivy-Leaguers’-Big-Edge-Starting-Pay
First, I hope you don’t take offense to anything I’ve said…in no way do I mean for it to be offensive or snooty. That’s not my intention at all. For what it’s worht, my mom had double majored at Cal in Russian (not her native language and I have no idea what prompted this decision) and Business whereas my Dad majored in sociology.
How does one define the most useful subjects on earth? What about physics, which governs everything?
Regardless of major, I think it really helps to a) have an extremely high GPA, b) do as many things as you possibly can that are both helpful and interesting, and c) have a plan well before you graduate.
The school thing I completely agree with. In my line of work, where you are and where you came from means EVERYTHING (academic pedigree). People can’t help but to have a knee jerk reaction (“Well, she did his undergrad at Harvard” even though her major has nothing to do with the job at hand). They love to name drop “so and so worked under Sam Danishefsky” (and the audience at hand usually knows he’s one of the most prominent organic chemists of our time and he’s at Columbia). Meanwhile, someone could bust their ass at an inferior institution and not receive as much praise.
In this respect, I think both of your parents were right and were doing the very best job of guiding you that they could. Your father wanted you to pick something that gave you a better chance of directly obtaining a career, while your mother knew you would excel in whatever you wanted to do and that would get you where you needed to go. Pretty impressive actually. My wife and I are very similar to this line of thinking.
Heaps and Hinder...come on down!
I was absolutely not offended. I always knew my dad was only worried about my best interests, although why he was so fixated on the waitress thing, I never understood. After all, I could have been a receptionist or a sales clerk . . . My dad was a business major at Cal, and he thought that was the best thing anyone could possibly aspire to! And anyway, he helped pay my way through Cal regardless of what my major was, so I can’t really complain. But even though my dad’s been gone for 12 years, the instant I saw that WSJ survey my first thought was, “See! I was right all along!” I would love to be able to (good-naturedly) torture him about it now!
My Mom was a little freaked out when I told her I was going to major in Geography
But then when she started telling people she knew it turns out that a few random family acquaintances majored in Geography and were generally very successful (one was my orthodontist – WTF?) so she figured it didn’t really matter. I think she was just scared that I would have an experience like my dad, who made up his own major in Russian Literature or something and ended up working at Safeway for a few years until he became a teacher.
The #1 greatest threat to America: BEARS
I think Carp is right that the key is not so much what you major in as having some kind of a plan of what you are going to do. Truth is, there are very few undergraduate majors that prepare you to go directly into a career-type job. Even a degree in physics or math doesn’t translate into a career, without graduate work or a teaching credential or something. The trouble comes when you walk out of school with your diploma and not the slightest idea of what you’re going to do next.

Women's Tournament - Big Upset in Berkeley Region
The #9 seed, Michigan State, just beat # 1 Duke, 63-40. Stanfurd must be laughing themselves silly, since they should have been the #1 in the Berkeley Region, if not for the infamous East Coast Bias. Plus, Stanfurd now ought to have a clear shot at the Final Four. Why, or why, couldn’t Cal have been in Duke’s Region! Damn!
On the other hand, there have been way more upsets than usual in the women’s tournament this year, so maybe Cal can keep it going.

Typically they put teams on their home court for first and second round games. Last year both Cal and Stanford played at Maples in the first two rounds — even though they were in different regions. Tonight #1 Louisville also had to play #6 LSU on LSU’s home court. They are trying to get attendance up. Attendance is also why Stanford was certain to be put in the Berkeley region this year. All you have to do is look at the small crowds in LA for Cal’s games down there to see why this is, unfortunately, something the committee feels it is necessary to do. The up side is that I believe next year early round games are going to be played at Cal, and we will almost certainly be scheduled to play there. It’s unquestionably unfair, but that’s the reality of women’s basketball.
That's fine
But it should be the home court of the team with the highest seed! Duke should’ve played at Duke, Louisville at Louisville!
by Avinash Kunnath on Mar 24, 2009 11:39 PM PDT up reply actions
I suppose they could try to run it like the NIT, and do that. But they choose to run it like the NCAAs and have pre-determined sites for the games, set a year or two in advance. And they don’t know who the #1 seed is going to be two years from now. Logistics would be a big problem for a 64-team field if they moved the games around like the NIT. It would also increase expenses, which the women’s game can’t afford. And what if the men’s tournament was scheduled at one of the #1 seed schools? It could probably be worked out, but I think they want to look like the men’s NCAAs, not like the NIT.
By the way, the only time a #1 seed was upset by a #16 seed, the #1 was Stanford — playing at Maples Pavilion.
It doesn’t make any sense. Even the men’s NCAA games at neutral sites have had pretty lame attendance this year. The NCAA is basically putting themseves in a position to lose money.
And for the last part…and that’s why you hate the Furd.
