DBD 3.18.09 What am I a machine?
What do you think I am? Some sort of sex robot sent back in time to write DBDs? Do you know how hard it is to write something funny every morning?!?! Or to have sex!?!? I certainly don't, insomuch, as I've never achieved either of those goals. Clearly, my fake marriage doesn't work with the ladies as much as I thought it might!
But I gotta figure that it's tough to write comedy, let alone have sex! With a woman! And this is like the 5th DBD in a row you've made me write. Yes, you! YOU! Now, Rishi, I expect nothing less from you. And I can only assume most of your DBDs would be Smelly Cat-oriented, so Praise Be To Bak Bak that you are too lazy. But Berklium97, I mean c'mon! We all know Berklium98 would do. 96, too! Why can't you???
And carp, you begged me every day for weeks to write a DBD and nothing. Nada. Nada mucho. Nadaissimo muchissimo!
NOT TWISTNHOOK, PEOPLE! via gizmodo.com
Let me just live my life. Lucky for you, I can write HILARIOUS DBDs on command, pretty much. You guys are so lucky to have me. And could never, ever, EVAIR be resentful E.V.E.A.I.R for my back and forth inanity. Or that time I never pushed HydroTech out. Or that other time I hid the fact that we are all geriatric women from the rest of you (sorry CalBear81, but you are actually the youngest one here!)
So very lucky.
Cal to face Maryland:
California earned its 15th bid to the NCAA Tournament and will face Maryland of the Atlantic Coast Conference in a first-round game Thursday in Kansas City, Mo. The Golden Bears are seeded seventh in the West Region, while the Terrapins are the 10th seed.
The winner of Thursday's contest will play the winner of the game between No. 2 seed Memphis (31-3) and No. 15 seed and Big West champion Cal State Northridge (17-13). The regional semifinals and final will be held in Glendale, Ariz. March 26 & 28, with the Final Four in Detroit April 4 & 6. This is the third consecutive time Cal will be facing an ACC team in the NCAA first round after squaring off against North Carolina State in 2003 and 2006. The Bears went 1-1 in those contests against the Wolfpack, winning in overtime in '03, but falling in 2006.
The Bears have an all-time record of 18-14 in the NCAA Tournament, which includes the 1959 national championship and a runner-up finish in 1960. More recently, Cal reached the Sweet 16 in 1993 and '97 and the second round in both 2002 and '03.
This year's Cal squad finished the regular season with a 22-10 overall record and an 11-7 mark in the Pac- 10, tied for third place. The Bears went 11-2 during the non-conference portion of the schedule, which included a road wins at Utah and UNLV. Once Pac-10 play began; Cal knocked off regular season champion Washington twice and posted a sweep of NCAA-bound Arizona.
Taking a team that was predicted to finish eighth in the league, head coach Mike Montgomery has become the third consecutive Cal coach to win 20 games in his first season at the helm. He is one win shy of tying Ben Braun's record for most wins by a coach in his first season at the school (23, 1997). During his previous stint at Stanford, Montgomery's Cardinal squad met Maryland once in the NCAA Tournament, but lost, 87-73, in the 2001 Elite Eight.
The 2008-09 Bears are built around a pair of first-team All-Pac-10 selections, junior guards Jerome Randle and Patrick Christopher. On Feb. 5, both Randle and Christopher scored the 1,000th point of their careers, and the players are moving up the school's all-time scoring chart (Randle 23rd 1,170 points; Christopher 27th, 1,144 points). Randle leads the team, averaging 18.4 ppg, and Christopher is second with 14.6 ppg.

Cal head coach Tony Sandoval will bring a contingent of vertical and horizontal jumpers, throwers and multi-athletes – including 2008 Croatian Olympian Martin Maric, senior Tifani Grimes and pole vaulter Allison Stokke – to the state capital. The Bears who traveled to the March 13-14 indoor national meet at Texas A&M will take some time off before their next competition.
That latter group includes sophomore Michael Coe, senior Katie Morgan, senior Jake Hanson, senior Inika McPherson, junior Mark Matusak, junior Kristen Meister, sophomore Cherrelle Garrett and freshman Sebastian Sam. I don’t think Davis is even in the running for “blue collar farm community.” It’s just a Berkeley wannabe for yuppies.
what? How so?
In my opinion, Davis is a terrific college town (one of the few left in America) with nearly half the population working for UCD. It’s safe, fun, and clean. They have farmers markets (held twice a week) and community jogging races. Housing is abundant (mostly) and affordable. Berkeley is very urban and it’s neighbors are Oakland and Richmond/El Cerrito. I could step on a used needle on Telegraph. They have an excellent bus system, but you don’t even need to take it because a bicycle is the best way to get around the city. That’s not to say it’s void of yuppies, but you can find the yuppies in any desirable place to live. If anything, I find that Berkeley fighting to hang on to it’s college town identity – Davis has well established it’s college town identity. Everyone I know who has spent an appreciable amount of time in Davis loves it, so I find it surprising to hear your remarks.

It's a great town to visit and I wouldn't have minded college there
But having lived there for three and a half years, you grow tired of it quickly. The college town bar scene is abysmal, the city council is ornery, and it is unpleasant to be out at night because it’s usually pitch black. It’s not really a typical college town.
As CalBear81 points out, it’d be a nice place to raise a family for low risk and high reward, but it’s a pretty boring place to be when you’re young, and usually the friends I know are happy to leave it for bigger and better things.
by Avinash Kunnath on Mar 20, 2009 1:49 AM PDT up reply actions
their city council is a bit weird – especially with regards to the University. I can’t believe they didn’t let that BSL4 lab go in…that would have been a major coup for this UC. I think the city council forgets that Davis would be Woodland or Dixon (with no disrespect to those ag towns) if the University was there.
The pitch black thing was voted on by the residents. Why? So they could see the stars. No yoke.
The nightlife is improving, although I wouldn’t say it trumps Berkeley or SF. You definitely don’t have to worry about some dude bringing in his piece. Sophia’s at night on the patio, and Woodstock’s for sporting events are pretty fun. Bistro 33 is a good place for the “brah’s” and such. There are an abundance of coffee shops – both trendy chains and unique mom & pop outfits – that are frequently packed with intellects and such discussing various topics. The Safeway’s are near college student living and the higher end Nugget Market’s are near the more permanent resident crowd. Off the top of my head, I could think of about 10 places that I’d really enjoy eating at for lunch or dinner, and where can one find that in a town of 50,000? I think, actually, there are more bikes then residents. I could go on, but suffice it to say I wouldn’t label it as “pretty boring,” but it’s not for everyone and I can understand that.
Heaps and Hinder...come on down!
What you say about Davis is pretty much true, and I was mostly just kidding. Picking on Davis is kind of a local passtime here in Sacramento. But, having observed Davis from 20 miles away for most of my life, I do believe that there’s a bit of truth to my comments, precisely because of all that “safe, fun, and clean” stuff, with farmer’s markets and community jogging races, that you describe. There is a strong element in Davis that wants to see itself as incredibly liberal and progressive, like Berkeley, but without having to deal with any, you know, actual poor people, and all the unsafe, unclean and unfun problems they bring with them. But I’m sure it’s a great place to live. I even have friends who live there, so it can’t be too bad.
Andrea Lo Field Hockey MVP:
BERKELEY – The California field hockey program named senior midfielder/forward Andrea Lo its 2008 Player of the Year at its annual banquet held on March 14 at the Hall of Fame Room at Memorial Stadium. Golden Bears head coach Shellie Onstead also lauded senior midfielder/forward Ashley Glosz as the Most Valuable Player/Offense and senior defender Rachel Moffitt as the Most Valuable Player/Defense, after which the Bears bid an emotional farewell to their 10 seniors from the 2008 season.
Cal tabbed senior defender Carolina Bistue as the winner of the All-Cal Award, honoring Bistue for her commitment to athletics, academics and leadership. A native of Mendoza, Argentina, who came to Cal by way of Davis, Calif., Bistue was a tough defender and, in her last two seasons as a Bear, a scoring threat. She collected career highs in points (20, ranking fourth in scoring at Cal) and goals (8) along with four game-winning goals in 2008.
Senior midfielder Caitlin Byrne won the 12th-Player Award as the Bears’ top reserve. The Apple Valley, Calif., product came off the bench in 11 of the 12 games she played in last fall. Byrne, Bistue and Moffitt all claimed spots on the 2008 National Field Hockey Coaches Association Division I National Academic Squad.

Spring Practice #3
The things that struck me the most about Tuesday’s practice were the same things that struck me about Sunday’s practice — Kevin Riley was once again sharp, and Giorgio Tavecchio continues to boom the ball.
Riley did make one mistake when it appeared he threw to the wrong area on a route by Jeremy Ross, but otherwise he was very good. He made a terrific throw over the middle and through traffic to tight end Anthony Miller, which prompted an animated reaction and pat on the rear from Jeff Tedford. Then he lofted a perfect long pass down the middle on a play action play, right in stride and softly into the hands of Nyan Boateng. That got some hoots and hollers out of running backs coach Ron Gould.
Tavecchio, meanwhile, consistently nailed 42-yard field goals. During another special teams session when the kickers work on their own kicking off a tee perpindicular to the field, Tavecchio blasted one from the Cal sideline into the opposite stands.
Tavecchio has been working hard in the weight room since the end of the season, and it shows. As a youngster growing up in Chicago, Jerome Randle loved riding his tricycle. One day, when his mother told him to put it away so the family could leave on an outing, little Jerome did what any headstrong 3-year-old would do.
He refused.
“He kicked the wall and broke his toe,” said his mother, Zsa Zsa Miller. “We had to change our plans to go get him a cast.”
When the family returned home, Randle immediately climbed back on his trike. Over the next several weeks, he had to have the cast on his foot replaced three times.
“My mom said I used to use my cast for brakes,” Randle explained.
“He was very persistent in everything he did,” Miller said. “He has a very, very strong personality.”
Whose domicile? OUR DOMICILE!
Instead you should get some clothing like they wore in the Italian renaissance and get that inscribed with Tavecchio.

Wall St. Insurance is a great idea
….even though this is just one of Barry’s rants… he does have a good point. But it can’t be in the form of an across-the-board tax because the taxpayer may get taxed inadvertently… we’re trying to make the risk takers and cheaters pay the tax.
First off the less you’re regulated and monitored… that is if you don’t have to report or be audited at all for certain financial tricks…then you must pay the biggest piece into the insurance reserve (such as AIG Credit Default Swap departments). You have to pay for the freedom b/c you increase systemic risk for everyone. Basically any new products that nobody understands yet.
Hedgefunds and short funds in particular.
Derivatives speculators (but not commodities purchased by companies) should pay a big chunk. Too many forms of swaps are just other forms of gambling.
Highly regulated operations such as Mutual funds should not pay into the reserve at all.
M&A, LBO, IPOs should be excluded as well… or should only pay a tiny portion.
…. Barry is onto something here.

I was all set to leave the house at 6 am. I put my things in the car when a large SUV pulled in front of my car (parked on the street) and the person waited in the car. Very odd, given our location (we live near an elementary school) and time. I wrote down his license plate number. Knowing my lovely wife (and baby to be) were peacefully resting in the house, I went back inside the house and watched this guy smoke a cigarette in his SUV. Convinced that this guy was not going anywhere, I got my wife up and told her to get ready for work and just go in early. We left the house 30 min later (the guy was still there). I circled back after 10 min (he’s still there!) so I called the police on the non-emergency number. They asked where I lived and the type of car that was parked there. He then said, “Sir, I can’t go into details but that car is supposed to be there.” My best guess is that it’s some type of stakeout. Then, of course, the Bay Bridge sucked ass, hence my poopy mood. I’ll and cheer up or I’ll auto-b& myself for the day.

And, in this situation calling the cops is a much better move than confronting some dude in an SUV with tinted windows who just rolled up on your pad. I can handle myself, and would do so if I had to, but in this situation I’d call the cops 100% of the time.

no, it was dark. And one thing odd happened already (he pulled up in front of me on my quiet little street at 6 AM and then didn’t get out). On my street and at that time of day, I was worried about my safety and the safety of my defenseless pregnant wife inside. If I approached his car and he was a bad guy, he could shoot me, throw me in the back of the SUV and my sleepy neighborhood would attend a funeral with no body in the casket. Those were my thoughts. My “Hmm…this is not right” meter was on high.
The bad news, out of all of this, is that there is a stakeout-worthy criminal in my area. Let’s hope they get this bastard. I have a maple baseball bat near every door of the house. I don’t have a gun, in part because I think I could accidentally shoot myself. Alarm systems go off falsely so frequently I’m not even sure the police respond anymore.
On another note, my father in law (who lives 5 minutes away) is a Vietnam vet who shoots first and asks questions later. I think he has like 30 guns – some of which aren’t registered I think (!). He’s in the NRA and goes to the gun club. If my wife shares this news with him, I’m going to have him walking around the neighborhood with his “tools” as he refers to them. Ai!

yeah I see what you’re a saying…probably would help if I described the street better:
on my left is an elementary school. Straight ahead is a hilly park with hiking trails, on my right is my neighbor, but his front door faces a cross street. So, there’s really no reason for any non-carp car to pull up and park (at that time of day). School wasn’t in session and it was way too early for a hike. Obama!
I picked VCU to beat UCLA too. Awesome!
"VCU, I think, has been playing strong, and I hate to say this, because my brother-in-law is in the Pac-10 right now, but the Pac-10 has been looking pretty weak this year," Obama said. "I like that as an upset."
He picked No. 11 Temple over No. 6 Arizona State in the South, too.
Craig Robinson, Obama’s brother-in-law, is the coach at Oregon State and led the Beavers to seven Pac-10 wins in his first season, after OSU went winless in the league a year ago. Obama picked against five of the six Pac-10 schools in the first round, selecting 4-seed Washington (over 13-seed Mississippi State) as the one league team to advance.
Wait… hey!
Did you know that Obama has a brother-in-law who coaches the Oregon State men’s basketball team? Amazing!

The tournament has usually started by the time I start thinking about filling out a bracket. I filled out my first one with CGB’s Yahoo group, using logic ("logic") similar to Remorseful Bruin Babe’s. And I was prepared to forget doing so immediately, except I got this email from my firm:

Make sure that no one feels pressured to participate, avoid managing your pool during normal working hours, and should clients be involved, first clear participation with the engagement partner.
If you have questions or concerns, don’t hesitate to reach out to a partner, HR or the Ethics & Compliance HelpLine at 1-xxx-4-ETHICS.

I like the magazine. They once wrote a feature on which large animals would win in a fight. They held an imaginary an 8-predator play-off, predicting the outcome and stating why they think animal X would kill animal Y. In the end they deemed the Polar Bear the best killing machine, slightly edging a Bengal Tiger.

Leon Powe hurt his knee last night
Fortunately, it wasn’t a Carl Landry type shooting, http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=3989396
Apparently, he banged knees with someone.
The Celtics lost, 127-121, to the struggling Bulls last night at the United Center, and with injuries to Leon Powe (knee), Ray Allen (elbow), and Rajon Rondo (ankle), they could enter tonight’s game against Miami with as few as eight healthy players.
http://www.boston.com/sports/basketball/celtics/articles/2009/03/18/bulls_throw_celtics/
ESPN has this to say about the injury situation:
Powe (knee) was sent back to Boston for evaluation and is not expected to play Wednesday night against Miami, according to the Boston Globe. (Mar 18)

Vegas Watch analyzes Cal-Maryland from a gambling standpoint
If they do advance, their draw in the second round is a bit above average. Maryland, outscored by 0.07 ppp in the ACC, is a pretty bad #10, while Cal is an okay seven despite their recent struggles. The simulation indicates there’s about a 55% chance it’ll be Tigers-Bears, which would be an interesting pairing.
Cal is awesome from three, shooting a ridiculous 43.4% as a team this year, far and away the best in the nation. It would be fun to watch them against a team with as absurd a defensive resume as Memphis. I’m by no means jumping off the bandwagon here, but if 5’10" Jerome Randle gets as hot from deep as he did against Arizona, it could be trouble for the Tigers. Memphis supporters should definitely be pulling for the Terps on Thursday.

Hinder: Cal or Furd?
LINK
One of the top quarterbacks in the nation will be Austin Hinder (Steamboat Springs, Colo.). Hinder has offers from schools all over the country but his favorite list has a definite West Coast feel to it.
Hinder is a strong-armed signal caller and can make all the throws. He moves well for a tall quarterback with a quick release and is very solid mechanically. He’s also able to throw outside the pocket on the run, but can also stand tall in the pocket.
Hinder had a solid showing at the NIKE Camp at Stanford last year and had a strong junior season as well. He threw for 1,600 yards and 14 touchdowns while rushing for 750 yards and 10 more scores.
“I’m hearing from just about every school in the country right now,” Hinder said. "I have offers from Cal, Stanford, Alabama, Kansas, Kansas State, Colorado, Colorado State, Nebraska, Arizona State, Notre Dame, Pitt, Purdue and a few others.
"I’m hoping to attend as many team camps as I can but don’t have a set schedule yet. I know I’m going to the NIKE Camp at Stanford and the Elite 11 regional camp at Cal and those are probably my top two schools right now.

I wasn’t good enough. I had two scouts put out feelers (from the padres and yankees) but when June rolled around, there were 1500 players taken and I wasn’t one of them. Then, of course, I turned to chemistry. I’ve seen unbelievable players not even make it to AA. I played against CC Sabathia and Dustin Pedroia in summer leagues, the latter of which was not as talented as several other players. Never got to see Encinal’s J-Roll Jimmy Rollins but I heard he was special.
Heaps and Hinder...come on down!
Word. Best player I’d ever seen at the HS level never even made it to college because of drugs/grades/attitude. He was Pedroia-like short, but I’d imagine Pedroia never even had close to the pop this guy had. Also, in 4 years of HS Varsity (at 3 different schools in the top programs in SoCal), he never struck out. NOT A SINGLE FUCKING TIME! You know more about whether this is impressive at the HS level, but I played with a couple early round draft picks and they struck out SOMETIMES.

no k’s is impressive, at any level. Pedroia was a good line drive player with good range, speed, and footwork, but he wasn’t a home run threat. He’s somehow gotten much better as he’s progressed in the game.
Heaps and Hinder...come on down!
Yeah. This guy was one of those short dudes who somehow has more infinitely more pop than the 6’3 weightroom warrior Greek Olympian-types. Is this something you’ve seen a lot, or does he sound strange?

baseball’s such a weird longevity game. Dominant players don’t cut it from level to level or even year to year. I saw one guy tear up college pitching, get drafted by the Giants in the 7th round, never make it out of High A ball, and now is a sub for an independent league team up in Chico.
Heaps and Hinder...come on down!
I knew my time in baseball was short lived when I faced Jon Zuber at the plate. Needless to say, 2 smoking fastballs and a slider I never saw break until it was too late and my delusions of a pro career were done for. Then the obligatory “blew my shoulder out” injury killed the pitching and I was done for at 17.
Ahhhh, good times

A small bat that was spotted blasting off with the space shuttle Sunday and clinging to the back side of Discovery’s external fuel tank apparently held on throughout the launch.
NASA hoped the bat would fly away before the spacecraft’s Sunday evening liftoff, but photos from the launch now show the bat holding on for dear life throughout the fiery ride.
“He did change the direction he was pointing from time to time throughout countdown but ultimately never flew away,” states a NASA memo obtained by SPACE.com. “Infrared imagery shows he was alive and not frozen like many would think … Liftoff imagery analysis confirmed that he held on until at least the vehicle cleared [the] tower before we lost sight of him.”

ALIFORNIA GOLDEN BEARS
1) Lowered Expectations Projected to finish eighth in the pre-season PAC-10 poll, I had all but written the Bears off this year. With the announcement of Mike Montgomery as head coach, there was reason for both hope and skepticism: he had turned hated rival Stanford into a perennial contender, but had done nothing to rejuvenate the Warriors during his brief stint in the NBA. Nevertheless, he had been handed a couple of fantastic-yet-raw talents in point guard Jerome Randle and swingman Patrick Christopher, so there was reason for some cautious optimism. However, 22-9 and 11-7 in conference, including road wins at UNLV, Utah, Arizona and Washington. (Actually a sweep of Washington, yet Romar gets PAC-10 Coach of the Year?) Well played, Montie.
2) Jerome and P.C. in Berkeley Randle, who’s roster height of 5’10" was clearly measured while he was suspended in mid-air, is perhaps the fastest and most athletic player in the PAC-10 (sorry Darren Collison). When he
keeps himself under control, he can take over a game with flashy cross-overs, lightning-quick slashes and no-look dishes. And lest you sag off to try to give yourself an extra step, he’ll bury you with a deadly three-point barrage (he went 8-11 from deep against Arizona in Tucson last Thursday, and is at 46.7% for the year). Christopher (who looks like LeBron James after a prolonged South Beach Diet), meanwhile, contributes his own perimeter game and has transformed into one of the premier defenders in the conference. He has scored in double-digits 24 times this season, and broken 20 in eight of those games.
3) The Supporting Cast Powerful wingman Theo Robertson (12.8 PPG, 49.5 3PT), Jamal Boykin (Duke transfer and former California High School Player of the Year), Jodan Wilkes (7-foot senior in the middle), Harper Kamp (classic “glue-guy” and the object of Bobby Knight’s undying affection) and Jorge Guttierrez (3.2 Reb, 1.6 Ass, 0.8 Stl in 16 Min/G) round out the “Fightin’ Monties”. They don’t run particularly deep, but with great team speed and athleticism and the leading three-point shooting team in the nation (43.8 as a unit) they will never be out of a game. — Noah Frank

Patrick Christopher, who looks like Lebron James’ dorky teenage brother, showed why he was a top 50 recruit two years ago. He was more of a slasher than a pure shooter last year, but he was scoring from everywhere on Thursday, including a great night from behind the arc. We’ll have to see how he does against more athletic wings, but it was a very encouraging performance.

They miss Augustine a TON, Abrams and Atchely aren’t getting the shots they were but they are capable of getting to the Sweet 16 in a perfect world just cause Duke sucks balls.
Plus, Minny doesn’t overly impress me. Big 10 is way overrated IMO

Wilner’s intro tourney piece (he’s posting a lot recently):
1. Cal: There are two issues for the Bears, who haven’t won a tournament game in six years (North Carolina State, if you’d forgotten) and didn’t expect to be here when the season began:
How will they handle the tournament pressure/butterflies? The last time Cal made the NCAAs, in 2006, top scorers Jerome Randle and Patrick Christopher were in high school.
Also: How will they handle Maryland’s grit down the stretch? Less than a month ago, the Terps rallied from nine down with two minutes left to tie North Carolina, then win it in overtime.
2. Todd Bozeman: The former Cal coach returns to the NCAAs for the first time since the Bears lost to Iowa State in 1996. And Bozeman leads a Morgan State team that, not surprisingly, has more talent than you’d expect from … well, from Morgan State.
Bozeman’s known as a recruiter but underrated as a strategist. If you’re looking for a major first-day upset, consider MSU over Oklahoma. If Bozeman wins, we’ll we see him at another major D1 school?

College Basketball's Dirtiest Teams
If the UCLA teams of the late 1960s and early 1970s were subjected to the kind of scrutiny Jerry Tarkanian and his players have been, UCLA would probably have to forfeit about eight national titles and be on probation for the next 100 years." Who would so slander UCLA, particularly during the era of saintly coach John Wooden? Their own legendary center, Bill Walton. Booster Sam Gilbert funneled so much money to players that NCAA probationary poster boy Jerry Tarkanian quipped, “The only team with a higher payroll was the Lakers.” The NCAA didn’t take action until 1981, by which point Wooden and his ten titles had been retired for six years.
Well this put a smile on my face.

“It has kind of sunk in, and I felt that this was the next step to letting you guys know that there will be a change,” Lynch said. “I never had the intention of getting into trouble or anything like that. But along the way my road got rocky, and now you know it’s time to set my pavement straight.”
I dont think you can set pavement straight. Once its become pavement, its already rock hard and impossible to easily move.
