Cal To Face Maryland in First Round of NCAA Tournament
The California Golden Bears will return to the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament this week for the first time since the 2005-06 season when they travel to Kansas City, Missouri to take on the Maryland Terrapins in the first round of the West Region.
The Bears earned a No.7 seed and will face 10th-seeded Terrapins Thursday, March 15 at a time that will be announced later. The contest will be broadcast by CBS, TIPOFF at 2:55 PM EST, 11:55 AM PST. The California-Maryland winner will face the winner of the Memphis-Cal State Northridge game Saturday at the Sprint Center.
California, 22-9 on the season, will be making its 15th NCAA Tournament appearance.

As someone who have watched Maryland quite closely this year (grad student at Maryland), I think this is a good matchup for Cal. Maryland lacks any good interior attack (like Cal) but can’t shoot nearly as well or consistently as Cal.

Greivis Vasquez, the PG, is essentially the team. He got the size (6-6) to give us some trouble. His triple double allowed Maryland to beat UNC earlier this year but he can also be a bit of a headcase (refusing to give up the ball or decides to take bad 3’s).
Landon Milbourne (F) is another player to look out for. He is athletics and can score in the paint but sometimes just disappears.
Freshman, Sean Mosley will probably get the task to stop Randle. I would say Mosley is like Jorge but with better offensive skills.
Maryland also has this Korean guy, Jin Soo Kim, who rarely see any PT but is somehow a fan favorite. He is their version of Max Zhang.

Hey Leon, think you could take a leave of absence for this week to get us to the Sweet 16?

Would love to
and last year I would’ve. But its a contract year, we’re playing for seeding, and no KG, no BBD. I’m kinda swamped. I hear Shareef isn’t doing anything – and he’s just up I-80 in Sac-town.
Anybody have any idea when the gametime will be announced?
I need to figure out if I have to take my floating furlough day next Thursday to watch the bears. Thanks Arnold, a free excuse to watch Cal is almost worth the 5% pay cut!

I have No. 12 Arizona defeating No. 5 Utah and No. 4 Wake Forest before getting owned by No. 1 Louisville.

Greetings from a Terp fan
Bizarre little intersectional rivalry we’ve got brewing here, no?
To start, Mendelevium is abbreviated MD, I suppose that’s close enough.
I wish your team good luck in this game. The Terps just making the tournament this year was a relief for me, anything more is gravy. I expect Cal to win on the order of 70 – 60 or thereabouts, but I haven’t seen much of your team and don’t know what kind of pace they play at. (I have the winner of this game getting crushed by Memphis anyway, fwiw)
I should also add that I pull for the Bears and Bulls in the NFL and NBA, so not only do I highly approve of Cal’s nickname, but I also will always have your team’s back as long as Tim Floyd is coaching at USC.
Have a good one!

Also
LEastCoastBears review of the MD basketball team was almost spot on – the description of Landon Milbourne should have been “mostly” instead of “sometimes just disappears”, but apart from that, I’d say that’s accurate.
Cal’s best strategy would probably be to give Vasquez whatever he wants (because he’ll go cold eventually) and make the rest of the team beat them.

Rec'd for the strategic note
Welcome! Please keep in mind all trash talk below is perfectly perfunctory and is a result of a need to blot out that awful day at College Park from my head.

Trash talking note understood
Since we’ve established that Cal will probably win this game, what do you as fans and as people who have watched a lot of Cal, feel that Maryland would have to do strategy-wise to pull an upset in this game?

Defend the perimeter. Make us take two point shots. That’ll increase your chances of keeping it close to the end.
Of course, if we’re off with our jump shot like we were against USC we could find ourselves behind 10-15 early on.
by Avinash Kunnath on Mar 15, 2009 10:18 PM PDT up reply actions
Defending the perimeter isn’t enough. Oregon and USC have done that, and Cal just fed the ball inside to Wilkes, Boykin and Kamp. Maryland sure doesn’t have much size inside, either. The Bears are patient on offense, and shoot so well because they wait for high-percentage shots. You gotta deny them that and force some bad shots, whether they’re from the perimeter or not.
So, basically, you gotta Go Bears!
You’re right. I should expand and say you have to pressure Randle to give up the ball. Be aggressive with him on the defensive side and he’s prone to making mistakes, especially given the size problems.

Run a full-court press (do not, at all costs, run a 2-3 zone)
and get offensive rebounds.
Apart from that, the game will basically come down to who makes more shots, with the likelihood being ~70% or so that Cal will because the Bears shoot better.

“All these buckets are coming Reynolds wrapped!”

“The Madness brought gladness to this CBS Broadcast Team in Tampa.”
“Villanova’s been through the Class of Hard Knocks in the Big East.”
“We’ve got a Britney Spears update here!”
“Happy Bunny Rabbit Day to you, too.”
“Vandy is looking to give the SEC their first win of the day.” (forgetting that Tennessee is in the conference)
“A little bunny hop on Easter Sunday.”
And of course: “This ain’t CARMEN SAN DIEGO!!!”

Isn't Maryland last in the ACC in 3 pt D?
Cal should win this game but Memphis is going to cream us by 20+

Hopefully I won't get bashed to much here
Terps are 11th I think in the ACC in the 3 point D. Being such a small team we have to play zone a lot to cover the big men down low. That hurt us against Duke since they are known for their 3’s. I read up on your Golden Bears and it will probably be somewhat the same outcome that we had against the Blue Devils. I do have Maryland winning this game but that just because that’s my team :) Good luck to you guys on Thursday.
We’d only bash you if you said you like either Friends or How I Met Your Mother. Otherwise, thank you for coming here, hope your stay in pleasant and good luck to Maryland on Thursday!

Shouldn’t worry too much. Cal is in control of their 3 point shooting. If they’re on, they’re on; if they’re off, they’re off. I’d say you stand a pretty good chance on Thursday.

Same thing with Vasquez. When he is on he one of the best point guards in the country and a great leader for the team. When is off Gary might as well bench him because he usually brings the team down with him. The one thing you guys forgot is Dave Neal our only senior. He doesn’t look like much but he is the heart of the team I think. The announcers in the ACC tourney said he looks like he would be picked last in a church league and a team captain of a bowling league.
Does Maryland run the same offense game to game?
by Avinash Kunnath on Mar 16, 2009 11:00 AM PDT up reply actions
For the most part they run the flex offence. Your digging trying to get me to give up our game huh LOL. I work for UMD and our Internet just went down. Hopefully this isn’t a sign to come for Thursday
Haha the coaches know way more about this than we do. We’re just getting the basics.
