What’s up with that, TwistNHook?
You couldn’t find a better picture?
I’m not going to complain, though, since it was a great game.

Just posted this in the last one, but I'll put it here too
reasonable prediction: beat Wazzu, sweep Oregons, split LA, and beat stanford. That leaves us 22-7 going into Pac-10 tourney. 2 wins there, leaving us at 24-7 and a top 6 seed
This is my last game, I don't care about my body.
It was just a prediction
I honestly have no idea what exactly it would get but I know it would be at least 6. Do you think that is possible?
This is my last game, I don't care about my body.
that means winning the next four in a row.
Seems unlikely. I would take 3 out of the next four in a heartbeat.

I think 2 wins in the tourney is going to be hard to come by
Cal should finish either 4th or 5th, which means they’re playing the other team which is 4th or 5th, which is SC… in Los Angeles (god I hate that— would it kill the Pac-10 to rotate it between LA, Portland, Seattle, Oakland and Phoenix? They all have NBA arenas…), followed by #1, UCLA… in Los Angeles…
Have to hope for some ASU/Washington losses, I guess. Otherwise, 11-7 seems like a reasonable prediction now that Cal picked up a coinflip game.

My prediction has us at 13-5
what 2 games besides UCLA do you think we will lose?

That's a brutal road trip this year
ASU is tough everywhere, and Arizona is actually good when they’re playing at home. I think Cal is the underdog in all of their final three games of the season— all the more important to make hay during the next 5.

We could lose at Arizona State and then just slip up against one opponent or something like that.

Since the Pac-10 being so even (except for you ducks) any prediction should be plus/minus one. UCLA isn’t infallible this year. I could see us surprising them at home. Provided we realize the goal is not to give the ball to the other team.

I heard somewhere
that in order to get the LA teams to agree to participate in the revived Pac-10 tourney (it only came back like 10 years ago), the Pac-10 had to agree to hold the tourney in LA every year.
Really sucks
www.californiagoldenblogs.com
That's correct
Back when they revived the tournament, they needed the agreement of 8 of the 10 schools in the conference. 6 schools were for it, Stanford (Monty) and Arizona (Lute Olson) were against it, and the LA schools (Lavin and Bibby) were the swing votes. The conference gave them a hometown tournament, and suddenly there were enough votes to get it done.
So, basically, you gotta Go Bears!
Reasonable Prediction
Here’s my reasonable prediction: We lose to UCLA; every other game is a coinflip, where the outcome will depend on how we carry momentum from one game to the next, and how we adjust within the game itself. The PAC-10 is a dogfight this year; I could just as easily see us running the table as I could losing every remaining game (include at Mack Court).
My reasonable projection: We finish the PAC-10 10-8, with a 21-10 record overall; win one PAC-10 tourney game, and make the NCAAs as a #7- or #8-seed. That said, I could also seeing us pulling an upset or two out of that #7- or #8-spot; this team isn’t the most talented bunch, but Randle and Robertson are studs, Monty is a great in-game coach (e.g., countering Washington’s early aggressive defense by telling his players to go back-door on offense; countering Isiah Thomas’s quickness with Gutierrez’s on-ball defensive skills; etc.), we can shoot threes, and we play good defense. Star players, good coaching, three-point shooting, and defense are all key in the tourney.
Our two glaring weaknesses are (1) rebonding and (2) athleticism; if we can overcome those things, and get a little bit lucky, we could win a few games.

Cal is a very "mid-major" sort of team
which is weird, but it does bode well for their chances of springing an upset. If they control tempo and shoot like they did tonight, they’ll beat anybody in the country.

Two wins in the Pac-10 tournament also means one loss in the Pac-10 tournament, so by rollonubears’ estimate we would finish 24-8.

Maybe we could just retire after our first two wins? Say we have nothing left to prove in the Pac10 Tournament.

According to ESPN’s Joe Lunardi, Cal is a No. 7 seed right now. This was on Monday after the new rankings came out and everything.

I think we have a great shot to make the tournament. Will we be a 4 seed or a 12 seed, well that’s what these games are for. But it would take, IMHO, a big Cal-lapse for us to miss the tourney. We should have over 20 wins, we should have some key victories over teams like ASU and UW (and hopefully hopefully hopefully USC). Not any really bad losses (maybe OSU, but they look like a team reborn).
The thing is we focus on Cal so much we see all the flaws. But there are a LOT (and I mean a LOT) of flawed teams out there. There are a lot of teams in our exact position saying “We could be in such a better position.” Go Bears!

I don't pay enough attention to college basketball
College football is great because I commit one day a week to it. I’m to busy for college basketball. They need to concentrate it to one day a week. My point is that I don’t know the flaws of other teams really, because I only watch Cal. I have some general knowledge but not a lot.

we have a strong resume up to this point
we have good road non-conference wins, a sweep of UW, a win against ASU…it’s not at all surprising that Lunardi has us in the tournament.
LA and SC are good teams, most likely tournament teams, and they’re supposed to win their home games. LA in particular has really turned it up as of late. SC, I feel like we can beat them at Haas, but as Decuire said last night, SC may be the most athletic team in the country. Will be a tough game.

What is all this optomistic talk?!
I thought you guys were Cal fans??
Where is all the “oh don’t worry, we will suck the rest of the year” talk???
I don’t get it. Twist, care to explain how you can allow this on your blog!
I support Takimoto in his effort to support Roger Kieschnick in his quest to becoming the best Kieschnick ever to play professional baseball.
Well, its for the same reason why OSU fans have hope. We were lost, wandering in the desert for so long that to be back, even a little bit, creates huge amounts of excitement. If UCLA was having this type of season, Nestor would be camped out in a clock tower shooting people with a rifle. But for Cal fans to see winning and scoring and victory, thats a bit new, its a bit different, and we might initially over-react.
I mean lets not forget how amazed we were when the football team was slightly above .500 in 2002. This is not as extreme as then, but its a similar principle.

Here.
Swept by LA at home, swept at the tend in Arizona.
That leaves toss ups vs. OSU, furd, WSU
and Oregon still playing horribly, I’ll give Cal the nod.
Tonight’s win was huge. The Oregon win will be #18. WSU (should/better) will be #19.
And 50-50 with furd/OSU is win #20.
The will finish 4-6 last 10 and MUST win at least 1 game in pac10 tourney for consideration.
They lose, miss on bubble, and go NIT.
There, now you feeling better, VD?
Cal better get 22 wins, b/c pac10 is a logjam in the middle and they don’t want 5th place, much less falling behind Arizona to 6th. This is going to be tough – ain’t no cakewalk.
But here’s a sunny side for you… no matter what happens this year, it’s only going to make them better – and they’re all back! Plus I’m curious to see what Markuhri Sanders-Frison’s 6’8" 280lbs. beef might add to our suspect interior. That’s your rationalization medicine, I’m giving you the prescription ahead of time.
I really hope you guys know I was only kidding
I only was quoting the great TwistNHook because of his constant “Cal is the eternal let-me-down” banter

Any wins beyond my predictions would be a natural upper.
It’s the wisdom of an old bear….
"Cal is the eternal let-me-down" hardly originated from TwistNHook. It is a mantra passed down through the years and years of sporting failure, many of those years taking place long before Twist was even a twinkling in his father’s eye.
So, basically, you gotta Go Bears!
It's not just a Cal thing...
ANY community of fans that has suffered for a long time develop that mantra. The OLD bears who lived thru the 60’s and 70’s acquired this attitude. But the attitude is dying, since we have been winning. Expectations are rising, and people like me are shedding their protective shells. A prime example of this is New England fans. The Pats and Red Sox were hard luck cases for forever. Now they have been winning for the past 6 yrs or so, and they are slowly coming around to believe. It’s happening in Berkeley.
Thank goodness!
Hopefully one day soon we can get to that Rose Bowl I’ve been dreaming about my entire life. I will be there, no matter what!

Shout out to Jordan Wilkes
I want to say a word commending Wilkes for his VASTLY improved play the past 4 games. I was dogging you the 1st half of the season. But lately you are playing inspired ball, fighting for boards, being active on slip screens, moving your feet to be in position on O and D, and for being bold and confident in taking your shots when you are open. Congrats – it’s great to see! You always had your dad’s touch, but confidence means the shots are both being taken AND going in!
And, oh, sorry about you USC ankle injury. I heard the explanation and was glad to see you out there tonight. My ankle used to always go, so I know how it feels.
Sorry for ragging on you earlier – you have shut me up and put a smile on my face.
yeah, he was the difference last night between a toss up and a blow out at the end
putting himself in position for rebounds (especially offensive boards) is a huge improvement. I think he’s just getting more comfortable and confident as he gets more experience playing in games – he really hasn’t played very much, even though he’s a 4th year junior.
Last night was a good match-up for him. Pretty much everyone he’ll go against is stronger than he is, and Brockman is certainly no exception. However, he has a good 5 inches on Brockman and much longer arms, which certainly helped his rebounding. It will be interesting to see what he does against WSU’s Baynes, who is a legit 6’10, I believe.
www.californiagoldenblogs.com
Wilkes is our best inside option now, too, so hopefully he can keep improving. Think of how good this team could (emphasis on could) be if we get our outside guys going (PChris, where are you????) and Wilkes is staying strong!
TYRANNICAL KING OF UC EUGENE! BRING ME THE HEAD OF SEATTLE QUACKER!
www.CaliforniaGoldenBlogs.com
yeah, Christopher is strugglin on offense
but he did a nice job on Dentmon last night
www.californiagoldenblogs.com
But Baines is slow, like Wilkes
Wilkes simply can’t keep up with quick athletic types. They go right around him. I think Baines can back Wilkes down with weight, but that doesn’t mean he’s going to score a ton.
Last night was the first time I noticed an opponent double team a Cal player in the post (Wilkes). It was at the end of the game, and I was like, “Oh my gosh – we drew a double team!” If Wilkes can command respect to draw two players, that will be huge, as someone else should be open. He doesn’t even have to score from that position, but can start making assists.
It’s a WONDERFUL development for the team! I’m not worried about Patrick Christopher – he is just being defended hard. He will get it going b/c we know he has the talent to do so – it’s just a matter of time. As Boykin and Wilkes continue to put pressure on defenses, teams will realize that they can’t play off them so much, so this in turn will free up PC to get it going.
A prior post said LA was a lost weekend. In retrospect – not at all! We gained more than we lost. We gained the true center that we’ve been desperately needing! This bodes well for the rest of this season and next. Let’s just hope that ankle stays solid!
yeah, it was tough to lose to SC
but that was the best game we had played since the 3OT win over the Huskies. They started getting their groove back then.
