WHOOOP WHOOOP
HIPS LIKE WATER… HITS LIKE A THUG
Syd’Quan has taken cornerbacking to a hooo nudda lebbbo
Great Bruce Lee clips, great editing, great assortment of skills, GREAT PLAYER
I’ve never seen such a small dude tackle like this
You’ve really outdone yourself, danzig.
You ain't got it like Marshawn got it
Danzig, you’re awesome. Kind of like the SydGod of Cal football highlight videos.

awesome
especially the bruce lee clips.
Go Bears Go
I’m not sure who I love more…danzig or SydGod
he really surprised me this year. I knew he was good coming into 2008, but I really liked him playing the ball and coming up to stop the run/plays in the flat. He’s a sure tackler since he got Meecham-ized.

Aren't there other players you'd like to see first?
Such as Alex Mack?
Anyway… tyson is next… but I have picked out Anger’s song…
http://songza.com/z/otxvuh
It looks great with kicks and the pacing is perfect.
You mean Jai Ho won’t be the highlight music? :(
Kidding, that song works well.
I guess to a certain extent I like to see players who are completely underappreciated get some appreciation. Who really looks at the kicker and punter (out of casual football fans) until they screw up? I just think the idea of a punter having his own HL vid is a good gesture and would be fun to watch.
I declare you Sanchez.
Dude.. I believe in that exactly!! I like the feeling of giving someone who is unappreciated props… Jeremey Ross, Tucker, Rulon, Tsloc, Schwartz and esp WillT were examples of this.
Dude.. I believe in that exactly!! I like the feeling of giving someone who is unappreciated props… Jeremey Ross, Tucker, Rulon, Tsloc, Schwartz and esp WillT were examples of this.I really like the Jai Ho song… in fact the dance scene at the end of the movie was one of my favorite parts.
It’s like an expression of the entire movie, which is why it was awesome and totally necessary.
Underappreciated players definitely deserve recognition. I can’t imagine how happy it makes some of those guys to see a whole highlight video of themselves. This is why I think it’d be awesome for a punter to have his own highlight video. The job is made a lot easier when you have the packaged awesomeness of Bryan Anger. Hopefully it doesn’t lead to his getting drafted early though
I declare you Sanchez.
Quick question danzig
I imported an quarter of the MSU game (in .mp4 format) to Premiere. Now how do I cut a small section out of the entire clip? :p
Secondly how do I import it if it’s in .iso format?
In other words, Go Bears!
Hit the “C” key and you should get a razor tool… hit the “V” key and you get the edge pulling tool and can shorten from the edges…
If you imported a huge clip… go through with the razor and cut out the sections you won’t use… keeping these clips manageable is the key to making these videos quickly.
You can’t import the .iso format into any editor (i won’t go into why)… you’ll need to either extract the MPEG2 video… or capture small segments of it… email me.
Awesome video
Syd is everything you want in a corner. Great cover skills and tackling. He’s come a long way since Tennessee 2006.
Jahvid Best for Heisman, Doak Walker, and Party Yacht Captain!
I think Syd'Quan has done enough for Cal fans that his performance at Tennessee is never mentioned again
You ain't got it like Marshawn got it
Okay, I love this song.
Now I got a chance to hear it. I only know this song from that one Youtube video of DJax’s return against UCLA along with DeCoud’s smashing block, but it’s a cool song (and apparently longer than the thirty seconds I thought it was)
I declare you Sanchez.
We clearly have wildly divergent views as to what is a cool song.

I’d love to see Marshawn Lynch rumbling down the sidelines to the Brubeck Quartet.

dude, what a strange ass request
… ok fine:

I agree that is a very strange request. The laid back West Coast style of Dave Brubeck wouldn’t match up very well with BEASTMODE. It’s almost as if BearsNecssity knows absolutely positively nothing about how to create a highlight video. Almost as if.

I’m sure if we put Brubeck on his Ipod, he’d be like “This spot be hot!”

nah,
brubeck is still teaching music at UOP and does the jazz festival circuit with his kids as the band now.

OUTRAGEOUS
I love love love it!
it fits better than one would expect….
I slightly disagree with tnh above, the laid back style of the dbq fits with the smooth improvisational running that mr. lynch often displays (even as he’s running through people).

This is the greatest thing I’ve ever watched.

Since you like making fun of my music tastes, explain why “Say” by Timbaland feat T-Pain isn’t a good song, as it seems lots of people hated me for even mentioning it.
I declare you Sanchez.
What the fuck are you talking about? Thats the stupidest argument ever.
Twist: “Interesting that you liked that rap song. I didnt really care for that specific rap song. I make no other affirmative representations regarding other songs, rap or otherwise.”
Rishi: “Ok, well explain yourself as to why other people think Im stupid for liking some song that you may or may not have ever heard of!”

Wow, harsh.
I may have gotten you confused with whomever attacked me for liking said song. If so, my bad.
Regardless, sometimes songs become “cool” by association. If I heard the song in this video on its own (or if I heard Marshawn Lynch on a B**** on its own without the awesome lyrics), I may not like them. But because they have awesome videos attached to them, I enjoy the song.
I declare you Sanchez.
i feel bad now. Im sorry Rishi. Perhaps I was a bit too harsh. I was just confused as to why you were demanding I defend myself on a song Ive never even heard!
When it comes to popular music these days Im woefully inadequate.

From random Bear Insider person
I don’t understand what it means, but you probably will.
Not to be nitpicky, but I’ve noticed that for all the videos you guys put together, you never seem to properly deinterlace your tv capture before splicing it and then uploading to Vimeo. Keeping your video interlaced before re-encoding results in a horrendous loss of video quality. You’ll probably find that once you deinterlace your tv capture, the video quality will be much better, especially during high motion scenes.
Avi... post this for me
Chicagoaubear, PRD74 and I have been doing this since 2003, so you are telling us what we already know. Chicagoaubear has made certain choices but I can tell you they were the right ones.
First and foremost, Chicago’s priority is to record our games for re-viewing on DVDs (on SD TVs). Sure, Chicago would love to capture from a progressive source but are you going to pay for his HD bill? When capturing from a 480i SD source you get about 30fps, but each frame has half the information interlaced… so there are only 15 or so full progressive frames per second… sure he can deinterlace them at the time of capture but he would get the ‘flicker’ effect where during high motion (sports especially) you get choppy video. Trust me, all three of us have already experimented with both… and chose to interlace. Interlacing technology is a good thing when it comes to watching something on TV. Trust me, high motion footage at 30fps interlaced looks better than 15fps progressive on any TV.
PRD74’s responsibility is to stream our games over the internet… and frankly he’s got the best 480i SD stream I’ve ever seen… no he doesn’t de-interlace either … but by choice… watching sports and 15 full progressive frames per second looks horrible. He too has tried both…. and are YOU going to pay for his HD upgrade?
Then there’s me. I get all my source video from these guys. And let me tell you for our community, making highlights is the lowest of all these priorities… However, I know my highlights will be seen on computer screens of at least 60hertz… so I can afford to deinterlace (I know there’s only 1/2 the information). All my video is progressive… and if you download the files I create (bottom right hand corner of every video page)… you’ll see that I actually can maintain a large amount of pixel information through the editing process:
http://www.vimeo.com/3095296
I would say these look pretty damn good… it’s only after they go up to youtube and vimeo that they get dumbed down.
Bottom line: The true reason behind my low quality highlights (which still are better than anyone else out there btw) is the Sorenson, 1pass codec used by Vimeo. Take a look at this clip… captured in full, uncompressed HD progressive as you suggested… edited and re-encoded in H.264 progressive (this is as good as it gets)… and uploaded to Vimeo… notice all the anti-aliasing and edge smudging problems.
http://www.vimeo.com/3116993
This clip looks ok, but getting 30 progressive frames at capture still isn’t worth it unless Vimeo switches over to H.264 2 pass conversion. Plus Chicago and PRD74 would have to upgrade to progressive sources… and pay for them on their own. Are you going to pay for our HD bills?
Look, all three of us volunteer tons of our spare time, resources and bandwidth so our fans can enjoy video… we do this all for free and all three of us are risking copyright lawsuits to boot. Plus we’ve been doing this for a while, so I can assure you we’re doing our best. Now if you are an expert and know more than we do, then pls send us some constructive suggestions… but just telling us to upgrade to HD and not send us the $$ is poor form. Plus to suggest that Chicago, PRD74 and I haven’t considered all the alternative frame capturing technologies is insulting… after more than 4 full seasons of this, we’re all putting out the best quality that we can afford.

This might be better to discuss over e-mail or PM rather than this message board, since it can get kind of technical.
First of all, I was in no way criticizing the effort put into making those awesome highlight reels. I was merely pointing out certain visual artifacts that I noticed while watching some of them.
Now, back to the post, unless somebody is doing something wrong with the TV capture, the 480i should be 60 fields per second (so after deinterlacing you get 30 progressive frames per second). I don’t know a great deal about TV capture, but I do know that if you encode interlaced video as progressive you’ll suffer a huge loss of quality because of all the high-frequency components that the interlacing adds.
I took some screencaps from the ASU highlights video where you can see the interlacing artifacts (you might need to download the image and zoom to see it):
http://img23.imageshack.us/img23/8358/picture14tz4.png
http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/8797/picture15oz3.png
And yes, I agree that 1-pass sorenson is awful (sorenson is just an awful codec period). There has to be streaming sites out there that use H264. The vast difference in quality would seem to warrant it!
Anyway, the point is that videos streamed through Vimeo and Youtube are already bitrate-starved. Interlacing artifacts waste bits on things that just make the image quality worse. I agree that the videos generally look great right now, but it would probably look even better if you nail down those interlacing issues!
By the way, I never suggested that you needed to upgrade to HD. In fact, that would probably be overkill if you’re just going to end up uploading to sites that scale your video down to 400×240 or whatever.
Keep up the good work!

I see a face. Purses/bags often have stitching/other things that make patterns that look a lot like faces. Then once I have seen the face, it cannot be unseen.

I remember how we ALL boo’d him incessently just 2 years ago and now I think I’m going to start a Syd’Quan for Heisman campaign. Great video as always, danzig.

Danzig, I don’t remember you doing a highlight video for the ’07 Tennessee game, or maybe I just missed it. Could you let me know.
