I want to vomit
I don’t know if I have it in me to follow this team. They like to play in the most infuriating way possible. I’m sick, with a splitting headache, yet screamed through the pain.
Also, all of the hubbub about Theo Robertson leading the nation in 3 point percentage has masked up the fact that he really isn’t that good. Get him some fucking stickum. Its not like he shoots the ball anyways.
This is my last game, I don't care about my body.
it's ok
we got the win we needed this weekend. I honestly believe we can get a split in the desert. Collison is very good, and a tough draw for randle. Theo does need to let it rip when he has an open look off a curl, he hesitates too often. He did have a nice step back 3 in the second half, but he has to let it rip more often.
Frustrating (and appropriate, given our history with ucla) that we lose by 4 points. For those of you scoring at home, 7 point possession minus 3 point possession (what it should have been) equals 4 points, or the difference in the game.
www.californiagoldenblogs.com
When was the last time UCLA legitimately beat us? last 3 games played: Shipp game: Cal beats UCLA, loses to UHO (University of Horrible officiating). first game this year: Honestly felt we beat us more then they beat us. That game was the perfect example of shooting yourself in the foot. This game we also beat ourselves. I’m not that upset about the 7 point play because we should have won the game. Even if Monty is the coach, they are still Braun’s players.
It always feels during recent games that we’ve been outplaying a team for like 5 minutes but somehow we are only up by 6. Opposite example is Stanford, where we couldn’t quite get the lead until the end. Why does it always feel like we are pulling away when we never are?
This is my last game, I don't care about my body.

That’s just the initial wave of nausea that we all get after a Cal defeat. Don’t worry, it’ll be fine. When we used to lose so often, we just accepted it as part of the game-watching experience – but now that we get that taste of victory so often, it’s hard to get used to the bitter swill of defeat again, especially after only the second home loss of the season. But after years of being a Cal fan, I’m sure your body will remember how to adapt.

Are you kidding me? That whooping @ Pauley earlier didn’t register to you? How about the Pac 10 tourney last year? I know you are still sour about Shipp’s over the backboard shot last year and the 7 pt play today, but get real.
yeah, come on guys
we only got cheated out of 2 of the last 4 games against ucla. That’s all! Nothing to complain about there, for sure.
www.californiagoldenblogs.com
Wait a minute
CBKWit: If you are suggesting that we lost the game b/c of officiating, I have to respectfully disagree with you. As that play was setting up, with Theo and Kamp doubling at the wing, and Drago sneaking off into the corner, I was thinking, “Theo – back up and get that fucker! What are you doing leaving him?”
Then the ball went to Drago, and Theo was badly out of position, so he drove to the bucket. It was a stupid fucking asinine foul that Theo made on him. Drago was well beyond Theo on his leaping way to the goal. Theo reached out and pulled him down (before letting go). It was obviously an intentional foul. There was no attempt (chance) to play the ball, and Drago was in the air. That’s why they have the rule. Now usually, it happens when a guy is sprinting down court, not in the half court set. But they blow the whistle when the play is leaping to the bucket and the defender is BEHIND the shooter. Drago didn’t get hurt in the least, and so that’s what makes the call frustrating. You want the man to at least go to the ground. However, Theo was f’ing stupid on that play and brought it upon himself. Bad positioning by an awkward double team, then should have just let him go.
More to the point of our loss was that Collison took over the game like a lion who’s just gone for the kill. I don’t like Collison, but that yell into Shipp at the end was the familiar sight of the triumphant Alpha whose just done the deed.
UCLA gets all sorts of officiating breaks. Tonight wasn’t one of them.
Sorry. I was pissed, and my family all ran the other way tonight.
it was a stupid play
and I agree that Collison absolutely won the game. But I don’t think the foul was as blatant or as hard as you suggest, and it’s entirely possible that Theo was reaching for the ball and just couldn’t get there.
I also contend that, in a game full of swings, you can’t just discount 4 free points. Sure, we were ahead in the second half, but in close games all of these plays matter. I think it was the wrong call and I think it really hurt our chances.

Didn't remember the Pac 10 tourney
And earlier in the year it was more our bad then their good. We probably would have lost anyways, but that was the most disgusting game of basketball I’ve ever seen for one team. 16 turnovers in the first half??? That one is the most borderline of all, but still. UCLA wasn’t playing very well that game, but luckily Cal decided to play as bad as humanly possible. Don’t take all the credit for that win.

It won’t get the program going anywhere. UCLA is having a down year and they are still the team to beat in the Pac 10 imho. Cal had a decent showing today on National TV and got some rough calls, however, there were some bad calls both ways (it is expected from the SPTRs). Focus on winning a game in the desert and the Pac 10 tourney.

UCLA is having a down year and they are still the team to beat in the Pac 10 imho
I’m going to go with the conference leader UW for this designation. If they lose their one remaining game, AND if UCLA wins it’s remaining two games, THEN you get a…split of the conference title. I really doubt this is going to happen, and I’m going to say that the conference champion is the team to beat in the conference, but that is just my humble opinion.
there were some bad calls both ways
such a wonderful little bruin. I love how you guys rationalize away your “victories” (cal at pauley last year, ucla vs a&M in the tourney last year, ucla at haas this year) as legitimate by saying, well, there were bad calls both ways. Sure there were. But ucla got AT LEAST 4 free points in this game, and in a game decided by 4 points, that is a pretty big deal. So you can keep pretending that you guys don’t get gifted 3-4 games a year. Ignorance is bliss.

Solid showing
It was a disappointing outcome, and overall I thought we played well. But a few lapses every now and then cost us big time. Boykin missed an easy layup, PC missed a couple of open 3’s, Theo passed up a couple of open 3’s. That 7 point play sucked and I don’t agree with the call, but we had other chances to win the game and we didn’t seize the opportunity to do so. With ASU losing, we still have a great chance to finish third (and at worst, a tie for fourth with Arizona’s loss). We should have pulled this out, but it’s not the end of the world. Hopefully we learn from our mistakes and execute down the stretch.
But these mistakes keep happening. Thats what really gets me.
Randle tries to do too much at times, and I was screaming for him to chill the fuck out tonight. It was a game straight from his sophomore year.
Theo is dead to me.
Kamp has dead legs, so he can only do so much.
I predicted a few of Jorge’s turnovers tonight, because they always happen the same way. The one play where he was sprinting full speed up court i said turnover at about mid court and, sure enough, he slipped and traveled.
Christopher is just one man, and when Randle is over caffeinated and apparently believes its a turnover if you don’t cross half court in 2 seconds, then there is too much of a load on him.
I’m just incredibly frustrated.

Yeah, he needs to let it rip a bit more, but you need a cold shower, and this is coming from someone who takes these games way too seriously. A win would have been sweet, but we’re still in the NCAA tourney, and we’ve got a great shot of taking a split in the desert (both teams got swept against the Washington’s this weekend).
www.californiagoldenblogs.com
OK, my statement was a bit strong,
but I just feel that he is kinda overrated. He is probably the 6th most important player on the team, behind the 2 obvious plus Kamp, Jorge, and Boykin. I don’t know. Plus the 2 almost steals at the end were gut-wrenching. I thought Lavelle was a football player.
NOTE: I love Lavelle Hawkins. Don’t jump on me for my statement.

no, that's fine
I LOVE the hawk, but those back to back touchdown drops in big game last year were brutal. You can love someone and still recognize when they make mistakes – again, we are not bruinsnation, and we don’t need to make everything fit into a pre-conceived imaginary reality.
But I would say Theo is a lot better than you give him credit for. Jorge was magic against Stanford, but he is still a true frosh and makes a ton of mistakes. Kamp is great (he seals off the paint so well and he’s a great passer), but he’s really hurting right now and it’s limiting him a lot. Boykin has energy, but he’s undersized and not very athletic. Theo is our third most important player, without a doubt.
www.californiagoldenblogs.com
Fair enough
This debate has played itself out enough.
How good can Kamp be? I’m a bit confused at his potential here. Are his legs really going to prevent him from being great? He says he feels 60, and this is after surgery. Potential 12 and 8 guy? (Thats how about the level I think he can be).
This is my last game, I don't care about my body.
by rollonubears on Feb 28, 2009 9:29 PM PST up reply actions
if he can get healthy
than that’s probably about how many points and boards he’ll get. But his value is so much more than this – he is great at sealing off his man and giving Cal’s wings unobstructed drives to the rim, he plays good d and is good at boxing people out, and he’s a great passer. So while his lack of size and athleticism will probably limit his points and boards to around what you said, his value is much, much greater.
www.californiagoldenblogs.com
The statement “I feel like a 60 year old man running up and down the court” really scared me. That’s not a problem that is really fixable. Unless his name is actually Benjamin Button.
This is my last game, I don't care about my body.
by rollonubears on Feb 28, 2009 9:36 PM PST up reply actions
Hopefully
a year’s rest will do wonders for his legs. After NCAA’s, he’ll have a few months to take care of them better since he doesn’t have to put strain on them day in and day out. I don’t remember when he had the surgery, but I’m guessing it was pretty recent since he was never really 100% this year and they considered redshirting him. I can’t wait to see him play next year, hopefully as a much healthier post player.
I agree.
Theo is tired. We need a deeper bench. Look at UW. They are DEEP. Arizona fouled out practically every man today. That’s why they lost.
We should get another shot in the Pac 10 tourney
This year’s team is good but not great. It is entertaining to watch because we’re essentially in any game with good shooters. Defensively, we’re just not that consistent. We still have some time to try to cure the problem of too much forcing (and then turning the ball over) for stretches.
Collison won the game today by making some tough shots with the clock winding down. I’ll have to relunctantly give him props for that.
Now if we can shore up the 3 seed and gain some momentum into the tourney by a good display at the Arizona schools, we just might be able to win the pac 10 title in the tourney.
by LEastCoastBears on Feb 28, 2009 9:11 PM PST reply actions
Gotta give props to Collison
Drove the lane, made that tough floaters, didn’t shy from contact. Also noticed the Bruins made plenty of extra passes in the paint to find the open man, and it’s much easier to make open than contested jumpers. Bears were doing a little too much 1-on-1 for my tastes, or doing stupid shit that kept us from getting over the hump.
I really hope people don’t start using that 7 point call as an excuse for the loss. UCLA turned the ball over 5 times tonight. They had a game plan, they came out, they executed. Cal was too sloppy for their toughest home game of the year.
by BearsNecessity on Feb 28, 2009 10:24 PM PST up reply actions
He played a great game
and I especially don’t mind giving him credit after he propped us up: "It’s a tough environment here," Collison said. "This has been the toughest environment since Texas (on Dec. 4), but we really gutted it up and won the game. That’s a good Cal team. Everybody is going to find out when they make a run in the NCAA tournament, I believe."
yes and no
sure, ucla didn’t turn the ball over and we did. Sure, Collison played extremely well in the second half and carried his team down the stretch. Sure, Cal still had the lead halfway through the second, sort of rendering the 7 point play moot.
But Cal also shot at a higher percentage than ucla, shot much better from the stripe, and out rebounded the bruins. Both teams had strengths and weaknesses, and at the end of the game, ucla was four points ahead of cal. Those extra four points from the seven point possession sure seemed important.
www.californiagoldenblogs.com
UCLA taking 14 more shots than Cal is a much bigger issue than anything you stated. The Bears took 19 3s and 32 2 point attemps, the Bruins 11 and 54, as they attacked toward the basket before kicking it out. Outrebounding is a generous term, because UCLA taking so many more shots allowed them to compensate for their shooting troubles and free throw issues. More attempts is usually a symptom of better execution.
The 7 point play would’ve been a bigger deal if it was with 5 minutes to go in the game rather than in the first half. Basketball is a process game and you’re going to get your share of bad calls, but it was just one bad call. It wasn’t like Cal was getting robbed.
by BearsNecessity on Mar 1, 2009 12:06 AM PST up reply actions
sure, it was one bad call
but four points is a HUGE bad call. And I don’t subscribe to the theory that just because it happened in the first half, it’s basically irrelevant. Maybe ucla runs their offense more quickly late in the second half and makes up the points anyway, but maybe it’s harder for them to get over the hump.
You are right that the shot differential was huge, but again, in a game with an essentially tied score, a number of statistics favor ucla and a number favor cal.
www.californiagoldenblogs.com
If it was a series of bad calls, then maybe I’d agree with you. That takes a team out of their game and really impacts things. But one call, even if it is a four point swing is tough. Refs aren’t perfect, especially in the college level.
And as someone who enjoys basketball at the college and pro level, I’m tired of ‘one bad call’ being the reason teams lose most of their games. 80 percent of basketball games are well officiated, and while I’d like to see it at 95-99%, given how much refs are made, we’re not likely to get to that point.
Aside from that one call, Cal-UCLA was well-officiated and the Bears had plenty of chances afterwards to make up for it. Most of the time in hoops, you’ve gotta make your own luck.
by BearsNecessity on Mar 1, 2009 9:33 AM PST up reply actions
I don't think it was that well officiated
bruins got away with a ton of hip checks and undercuts, as they always do. But my greater point is, the margin in these games is thin. Cal maybe has a 46% chance of winning (what was the line? Bruins -3 is my guess). When you add more than 5% of a teams’ points for free, that is a HUGE swing.
I do agree that you have to make your own luck. I do agree that Cal had ample opportunity to win the game. But to discount the importance more than 5% of a teams’ points, especially in a game with such a close margin, is ridiculous.
www.californiagoldenblogs.com
You don’t think there were any bad calls that went against the Bruins? To assume this four point swing had an impact implies that every other call in the game cancelled each other out and this play was left standing.
by BearsNecessity on Mar 1, 2009 10:42 AM PST up reply actions
at a minimum, yes
I think there were plenty of no calls against the bruins, which would render whatever no calls against us (or bad calls against us) irrelevant. ucla gets away with much, much more than most teams do, so I go into the game assuming we’re going to be on the short end of the stick, officiating wise. I’m not even bothering with that. It’s the blatant huge calls that really irritate me.
