DBD 2.23.09 Those Slumdog Millionare people owe me money!
They stole my idea. I went to them and pitched them my idea for a BIG movie number and they said "Not in this town, kid" (Note: Not direct quote). So, I said "Fair enough. Fair enough."
And then they go and make the EXACT movie I pitched to them. About a gay politician who fights for what he believes in, but gets assassinated by a crazy lunatic who ages backwards and bores the shit out of everybody. Or as I called it "The Reader." I mean, yes, they took a few liberties with the plot adding in that whole thing about bugging the Democrats and all. But it was pretty much the exact same movie!
You know you owe me money, Danny Boyle. Just admit it and we can move on with our lives.
So, yeah, the Oscars. They were OK. I just tune in every year to figure out how much better I am at dressing than Mickey Rourke and then tune out. That came pretty early when I saw his Chihuahua-oriented necklace. That's so late 90s. And we're still in the early-to-mid 90s. I mean c'mon!
So, my ego fully assuaged, I returned to copying and pasting cal sports stories. Because lordy if there arent a lot of em. And we seemed to lose a lot this weekend.
Oh well.
Ashley Walker becomes all time rebounder:
BERKELEY, Calif. (AP) Senior forward Ashley Walker had 20 points and grabbed nine rebounds to become Cal's career leader, helping the sixth-ranked Bears to a 62-40 win over Oregon State on Saturday night.
"She's put herself in position, and I know she'll give a lot of credit to her teammates but she's worked hard and she's always been the unsung hero on this team," Boyle said. "Great things have happened for her but she's gone and gotten them, too. Everything she gets this year she deserves."
Walker has done pretty much everything since arriving at Cal nearly four years ago, the same time Boyle was hired to take over a program that hadn't had a winning record in 12 straight seasons.
Boyle and Walker have led the Bears to the NCAA tournament each of the past three years and they have them on the verge of capturing at least a share of the Pac-10 title for the first time ever.
Post-game womens bball OSU quotes:
Head Coach Joanne Boyle
"I am just really happy with the win and in general the weekend. We really played a great 80 minutes of basketball this weekend. Oregon State is always tough. LaVonda does a great job of pressure, and their guards can do a lot of stuff . I thought we did a great job of scouting report defense on them."
"When we played up there earlier this season, it's always a tough go for us up there. I thought we did a great job of committing to rebounding. Allowing just one shot, a tough shot. Just like Oregon, I thought we did both ends of the floor really well. Even tired, I think we did a great job of running tonight."
"I was trying to get Ashley out of the game, to rest her, but I knew she had one rebound left that she needed for the record. I wanted her to get it at home. She was guarding Courtney Mitchell, and I wasn't sure Ashley was ever going to get it with Mitchell in there. They took Mitchell out and put someone else in, and I knew we would keep her in there for a minute or two minutes to let her get it."
"It's tough to set and hold records, especially such a prestigious one as the all-time rebounder at a University for four years. She has worked her butt off. I couldn't be more proud of her for this and for everything she has done for this program in the last four years. I am so happy that she gets to have that recognition and hold that record. I think this is a record that will stand for a very long time."
Mens bball loses to OSU. They have like a 3 paragraph story:
CORVALLIS, Ore. (AP) -- Calvin Haynes scored 19 points, including a key 3-pointer a layup with less than four minutes to go, and Oregon State defeated California 65-54 on Saturday.
The victory snapped a four-game winning streak for the Golden Bears (20-7, 9-5 Pacific-10 Conference), who are seeking their first NCAA tournament berth in three seasons.
Oregon State (13-13, 7-8) won its third straight conference game and swept the season series against Cal for the first time since the 1994-95 season.
The Golden Bears led by as many as 12 points early in the second half, but the Beavers went ahead midway through on Haynes' jumper.
Womens lacrosse loses to Syracuse:
BERKELEY - California lost to No. 3 Syracuse, 18-2, in a steady downpour on Sunday at Memorial Stadium. Sophomore midfielder Emily Abbood and senior attacker Sam Price scored for the Golden Bears, whose record evens out at 2-2 after the non-conference game. Syracuse, a 2008 NCAA semifinalist, improved to 3-0.
This is the second straight week in which Cal has lost to a 2008 NCAA semifinalist that was ranked No. 3 in the nation. On Feb. 15 in Denver, Cal lost to then-No. 3 Duke, 19-7. Cal is slated to play all four 2008 NCAA semifinalists, including national runner-up Penn on Feb. 27 in Philadelphia and four-time defending champion Northwestern on April 5 in Evanston, Ill.
"What I really want my team to take away from playing these teams is the grittiness and the fight that all those teams have," Cal head coach Theresa Sherry said. "Taking care of fundamental skills is what all those teams do very well. They have very few lapses on the defense, on the attack and in the midfield.
"We really need to put it together on all ends of the field, and we have a ways to go there it seems. Playing the top teams in the country, especially two so far this season, has been eye-opening for our current players, and hopefully that can motivate them to get to that level."
Cal softball loses to Kansas:
Palm Springs, Calif. - The Kansas Jayhawks rallied from a 2-0 deficit to defeat ninth-ranked Cal, 3-2 in eight innings in the final day of the Cathedral City Classic on Sunday.
Cal (11-2) resumes action in Southern California next weekend in the Demarini Tournament hosted by CS Fullerton, Feb. 27-Mar. 1.
The loss snapped Cal's six-game winning streak.
Cal built an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning thanks to Valerie Arioto's leadoff home run - her third in five games. Gina Leomiti kept the inning alive with two outs with a single through the left side, followed by a Vernae Sevilla walk. Sanoe Kekahuna delivered single with two strikes through the left side to plate Leomiti.
KU trimmed the deficit in the bottom half of the first when Allie Clark doubled with two outs to plate Stevie Crisosto.
Womens gymnastics loses to Stanford:
The California Golden Bears posted six career high scores in their 197.175-190.625 loss to the No. 4 Stanford Cardinal Sunday, Feb. 22 at Haas Pavilion in the annual Flip for a Cure meet.
The Bears strongest event of the meet came in their final rotation. The Bears posted a season-best 49.050 on the floor. Five of the six Cal scores in the event tied or set new personal bests for the gymnasts. Freshman Alex Leggitt and senior Joanna Bennett both earned a career-best score of 9.775. Sophomore Stephanie Cheng set a new career mark with her 9.850. Sophomore Avery Gee also earned a 9.850 for her routine, tying her career high. Freshman Shana Johnson scored a career high with her mark on the floor as well as setting a career high with her 9.575 exhibition vault.
Sophia Hocini was once again the top all-arounder for the Bears. Her season-best 9.80 on the floor helped her to an all-around total of 38.950, her highest overall total of the season, for a second place finish. Stanford's Shelley Alexander won the all-around with a mark of 39.40. Cal's Gee was third with a 37.725
Womens golf in 10th place at Wildcat Invitational:
The California Golden Bears women's golf team is in tenth place after the first round of play at the Wildcat Invitational tournament in Puerto Penasco, Sonora, Mexico. Playing the par-72, 6,146 yard course, the Bears ended the day with a +19 after posting a 307 (69-73-78-87). UCLA leads the field of 17 teams with a one-under 287.
Sophomore Pia Halbig finished her round in a tie for second place after shooting a three-under, 69. Senior Allison Goodman also ended day one ranked in the top-ten, tied for ninth place with a one-over, 73. Juliana Murcia of Arizona State sits atop the leaderboard with a five-under, 67. Senior Shannon Yocum shot a 78. Roseanne Niven was the final scoring Bear with an 87. Angie Villela posted a 92.
Round two tees off on Monday, February 23 with opening threesomes starting on the first hole at 8:00 a.m. (MST).
Womens water polo gets 7th at Irvine Invitational:
IRVINE, Calif. - The No. 5 California women's water polo team won its last game of the weekend, 9-6, against No. 8 San Jose State on Sunday afternoon at the Anteater Aquatics Complex. The Golden Bears improve to 15-2 overall. Cal split its four games at the tournament to finish seventh at the Irvine Invitational.
The Bears went on an important scoring drive in the second quarter with four goals to hold a 6-3 advantage at the halftime break.
Each team scoring three goals in the second half, but Cal's early lead kept the Spartans at a three-goal distance.
Senior two-meter defender Paige Lorenz paced the Bears with three scores. Camille Hewko had two while Emily Csikos, Meghan Corso, Erin Scully, Athina Vazeos each scored one.
Redshirt sophomore Stephanie Peckham and senior Lauren Burke split time between the posts, grabbing four and three saves each, respectively.
Rugby beats UBC 31-15:
BERKELEY - California welcomed British Columbia to homecoming with a capacity crowd and television cameras Saturday at Witter Rugby Field, as the Golden Bears rose to the occasion to beat UBC, 31-15. The win creates a 16-point advantage for Cal's return trip to Vancouver in March for the finale of the annual "World Cup" series.
Cal winger Dustin Muhn scored the game-winning try in the second half and was named Man of the Match by USA Rugby, which presented the event as the National Guard Game of the Week for an April 6 broadcast on ESPNU.
"The match was very even, two equals," said head coach Jack Clark. "We controlled our position on the field pretty well, played some defense on our own goal line and benefitted from a couple of long-range scores."
Softball beats maryland:
Palm Springs, Calif. - No. 9 California improved to 11-1 this season after a 7-0 win over Maryland on Saturday in the second day of the Cathedral City Classic.
The Bears were aggressive all afternoon, registering seven steals and taking advantage of UMD pitching miscues and three errors. It was the third time this season that Cal had seven or more steals in a game, giving them a Pac-10-best 48.
"Fortunately for us we were able to be aggressive today and put the pressure on their defense," said Valerie Arioto. "That's one of the things we set out to do as a team this season - be aggressive with our speed and generate scores with runners in scoring position."
This was also the fifth shutout of the season for the Bears. In fact, Cal has only allowed just one run in the last 36 innings since the sixth inning George Washington game on Feb. 13. The Bears have outscored their opponents, 86-17.
Cal baseball loses doubleheader to Riverside:
BERKELEY, CALIF. - The University of California baseball team dropped a doubleheader to UC Riverside, 6-5 and 5-2, Saturday at Evans Diamond, falling to 1-2 on the 2009 season after defeating the Highlanders (2-1), 8-7, on Friday. In game one, the Golden Bears almost made an impressive comeback when sophomore Austin Booker led off the bottom of the ninth with his first career homer to get Cal within a run. Brett Jackson followed with a double, but unfortunately for the Bears freshman Danny Oh lined out to right field, junior Jeff Kobernus flew out to deep center field and junior Blake Smith flew out to the right field warning track to end the game.
In game two, the Bears did not get a hit until the fourth inning as UCR junior left-hander Paul Applebee threw a complete game with four hits, two runs, one walk and eight strikeouts.
In the morning game, UCR scored two runs in the top of the first inning off of Blake Smith, who ended up throwing a career-high 5.2 innings with four hits, four runs, no earned runs, four walks and a career-high seven strikeouts. Smith struggled in the first inning however, giving up two runs on his throwing error to second base and a wild pitch.
So, what'd you think of the Oscars?

The Trojans lost to No.22-ranked Washington 60-51 in front of 7,325 at Galen Center, then the real fireworks began. About 20 minutes after the game ended, witnesses said USC guards Daniel Hackett and Dwight Lewis got into a shoving match on the court and arena security needed to break up the altercation.
According to witnesses, Hackett originally became agitated toward a group of college-age students. Lewis then appeared on the court and appeared to defend the students. That led to words between Lewis and Hackett, and the pair began shoving each other.
Witnesses said Hackett was escorted back toward the locker room by a member of the basketball staff, but that Hackett reappeared a few minutes later in an agitated state under the USC basket.
Morrah is doing well at the combine and today Follett, Williams, Felder, and Davis will be tested.

I am elated over the victories of Slumdog last night. I never dreamt that a day would come when AR Rahman would be performing a Bollywood number on national television, only to have an infusion between that and a John Legend song. It was epic.
That said, the Oscars are trending in a disturbing direction. It’s becoming pretentious, elitist, and condescending. Look at the nominees for best film: Slumdog, Benjamin Button, The Reader, Frost/Nixon, Milk. Now, ask any random person if they’ve seen any of them. Chances are, maybe they’ve seen Slumdog and a couple will have seen either Benjamin Button or Frost/Nixon. That’s it. What happened to a movie like “Dark Knight”? It was well-loved by the masses, it was a spectacular blockbuster, and it was critically-acclaimed (95% on RottenTomatoes). Why should a film like that not be considered for Best Picture? Because it’s too massy?
Time and time again, films like that get snubbed for being too popular because the Academy really wants to assert itself and I think it’s just quite unfitting.
I declare you Sanchez.
That said, the Oscars are trending in a disturbing direction. It’s becoming pretentious, elitist, and condescending.
Agreed. I was surprised that I had actually heard of all the movies that won major awards this year. Usually I don’t recognize many winners of the most prestigious awards.

I didn’t see Dark Knight but it was pretty amazing how they made the actors and actresses age in BB
Tedford...if you're reading this...I'LL WORK FOR FREE! I'll fill out your Coach's Poll!
That is true. It’s not as if the special effects weren’t good or anything, but BB didn’t do any Forrest Gump style stuff either (like making Gump meet Nixon and JFK).
I guess Dark Knight (and Ironman as well) had spectacular special effects and definitely deserved teh award for best SFX

And how can Wall-E not be nominated for best picture? What, just because it’s animated? What crock.

Wall-E is a technically impressive, artistically boring movie.

Please tell me this isn’t one of those “Friends” kind of situations.
I can’t be the only one here who thought that Wall-E was a phenomenal movie.
I declare you Sanchez.
The special effects were phenomenal. The story was weaker than Attack of the Clones.
by BearsNecessity on Feb 23, 2009 9:22 AM PST up reply actions
whoa now
let’s not say things we can’t take back.
i thought wall-e was fantastic, and the opening 10 or 20 minutes or so, where a pixar paints a compelling story without a single line of dialog being uttered, was fantastic filmmaking.
So, basically, you gotta Go Bears!
10-20 minutes? It was about an hour of dialogue-free storytelling. Which was a tremendously bold move that paid dividends that most shareholders can only dream of.
How could anyone not love Wall-E?! It had awesome visuals, great storytelling, universal themes, and it was engaging, entertaining, and euphoric the whole way through.
I declare you Sanchez.
was it really that long? admittedly, i haven’t seen it in a while, but it didn’t feel that long. which i suppose is the mark of good filmmaking.
So, basically, you gotta Go Bears!
Yeah, it was an hour. I honestly didn’t feel it either – I only knew it was an hour because I read it afterwards.
I could totally watch it again. In fact, when it comes out on DVD, I may as well!

Wall-E was a good film. It was not a great film. Not to be mean or anything, but the plot was pretty pedestrian compared to the other Pixar films.

Fair list. I honestly haven’t seen a few of those, so I can’t comment on why Wall-E isn’t there, but I would most def put it in my top ten for 2008.
Also, have you not seen Grand Torino, or is this another situation of us disagreeing?

by BearsNecessity on Feb 23, 2009 9:49 AM PST up reply actions
I firmly believe Wall-E should have been nominated as well, as for the special effects debate, I don’t really care, except to say hooray for Benjamin Button because my cousin’s firm did the fx for that firm (unfortunately, before he was brougth on board)
They're after our precious bodily fluids
It’s becoming pretentious, elitist, and condescending.
I’m confused by your use of the word “becoming”.
So, basically, you gotta Go Bears!
Good point.
I suppose, it’s becoming more pretentious, elitist, and condescending than ever before.
And it’s really unfortunate because the Academy seems to forget tons of good movies from 2008. Also, they seem to have forgotten that a movie called “Grand Torino” was made.
I declare you Sanchez.
The Oscars have always seemed to me a way for the rich masses
to stroke its (they’re?) ego. If “the Academy” thinks a film is good its probably not. While Slumdog was good, was it the best film of the year? I don’t know cuz I haven’t seen them all, but I don’t think so. And as Twist mentioned, Button was one of the worst films I have seen in a long time. Sure the special f/x were cool, but the screenplay sure messed up the original story by Fitzgerald. And although I liked Dark Knight, I also don’t think it was worthy of any best picture nomination or award. And I wouldn’t measure a film’s quality by “critical” or mass acclaim. One of the best films in recent memory was Memento, which didn’t receive a lot of attention at the Oscars but won numerous small film awards.
I got lost in cyberspace.

Honestly, I haven't even seen all the nominees
and didn’t watch too many movies this year (I usually wait for them on Netflix), but I did see BB and Slumdog. BB i thought was super booooring, while I liked Slumdog but it didn’t impress me as a great film (good story tho). Off the top of my head, one movie critics didn’t like at all, which i think was better than BB and Slumdog was Seven Pounds. Mind you I wouldn’t call it the Best Picture of the Year but IMO better than those two, but critics and movie goers like shit with happy endings more than that type of film.

I’m in love with Crabtree, but I kinda like our WR corps at the Niners.
Bruce for another year or two as a #1WR, Johnson is a good option, Jason Hill is an emerging talent with #1 WR potential, Josh Morgan is looking good. I’m quite pleased here.
We really need to use our pick on the best player available. Hopefully, it’s Michael Oher.

I thought we liked the idea of a project QB in the mid to later rounds. At least both of those guys are pro-style QBs. There are only 6/17 pro-style QBs and two will be taken in the first round…so that only leaves 4/15 pro-style QBs. And we’ve all seen how spread QBs work in the NFL…

He’s gonna take a pay cut and I really like his abilities.
Of course, I’m a huge Shaun Hill fanboy and really believe he’ll take us to the playoffs this coming season.

Then, I wouldn't take a QB at all if Alex Smith is still in the picture

Completely different spread.
McGee started this year in Mike Sherman’s Pro-Style but got injured… this means he was pro-style for the entire summer, taking snaps from under the gun

He’s most effective running a spread style offense. He’s really not a pro-style QB (though he does have decent measurables).
Honestly, as long as we don’t pick up FA Nate Longshore, I’m chill.
I declare you Sanchez.
I’d take Wrongpore…
and put him in a psych unit for like 6 months. He’ll get some confidence and then be pre 2007 injury longshore in no time.
Tedford...if you're reading this...I'LL WORK FOR FREE! I'll fill out your Coach's Poll!
I agree.
FA longshore, put him on the scout team. WHEN hill and smith are unable to play (maybe not this year, but it will happen) you have a back up ready to go.

I’d do it. It’s always worth picking up a QB in those rounds and just letting him try to play. Hell, look how many starting QBs were undrafted or late drafts – Delhomme, Kurt Warner, Tony Homo, Derek Anderson, etc.

Yea, during the whole Fremont process
Selig hinted/suggested several times that he would rule in favor of the A’s against a Giants “territorial rights” claim if the A’s moved to SJ.
But then again, this probly just means the A’s stay in Oaktown for a while longer b/c of the economy. Yeah, well I'm old

And you’re right that the Rivercats draw well here in Sacramento. There’s talk of expanding Raley Field to 35,000 and luring the A’s here. Too bad it will never happen. The Bay Area snobs would never deign to drive up the road a few miles to see a game in our humble little cowtown.
I wouldnt! Ive heard disqueiting rumors that there are cows in that town!

I don’t see whats so snobbish about that. I’m legally required as a liberal to be within 1 hours drive of an ocean. My hands are tied!

First — Sacramento is 90 miles from the ocean. That meets the one-hour rule, unless you are a wussy driver.
Second — the City of Sacramento is a bastion of liberalism in the sea of the Central Valley, so you would be safe here. (But don’t venture outside the City limits. That’s where they keep the cows.)
Third — even assuming, arguendo, that Sacramento didn’t meet the one-hour rule, there must be some kind of I-80 dispensation, since we have Bay Area skiiers stopping to pee here all the time. In fact, I believe that’s our City motto: Sacramento – The Best Place to Pee Between San Francisco and Lake Tahoe.
Fourth — in case of emergency, you can always stop in Davis for a latte. It’s only 20 miles down the road.
Fifth — Kevin Johnson, Mayor of Sacramento.
Wow, arguendo. Nice! You must be a lawyer.

McGeorge, on and off. I enjoy it, but It’s a lot of work for an amount of pay that one could charitably call inadequate. In fact, they are too embarassed to call it a salary. It’s an “honorarium.”
That’s not necessarily a bad thing. It’s a perfectly good law school, but it’s private and pretty expensive. If you are going to practice in Sacramento, it’s a great place to go, because there is a huge network of McGeorge grads around here. I went to Hastings, and felt just a little bit out of the loop in the Sacramento legal community when I first started out. But if you aren’t going to practice around here, you’ll find that very few people have heard of McGeorge. It’s biggest claims to fame are that Raymond Burr (who played Perry Mason on TV) was a big supporter of the school and that Anthony Kennedy taught there before he was appointed to the Supreme Court, and still teaches a class for McGeorge students every summer in Europe.

The story SF Weekly broke on Friday is true: Assemblyman Tom Ammiano will announce legislation on Monday to legalize marijuana and earn perhaps $1 billion annually by taxing it.
Quintin Mecke, Ammiano’s press secretary, confirmed to SF Weekly that the assemblyman’s 10 a.m. Monday press conference regarding “new legislation related to the state’s fiscal crisis” will broach the subject of reaping untold — and much-needed — wealth from the state’s No. 1 cash crop.

right, shutting illegal things = good
but, the reason to legalize it was apparently to solve budget problems. Killing a major portion of economy (even if it’s illegal) is a good way to increase strain on social services via unemployment…not to mention a portion of that money is getting laundered (and therefore taxed) already…
you wanna explain how exactly the laundering of drug money is good?
also, if i understand you correctly, you’re arguing that because people have a lifestyle built on illegal activities, it would be wrong of the government to legalize the activities because then they wouldn’t have an illegal way to make money anymore?
the Maharg is above catch phrases

I'm Fijian. Yes, the water is like that.

Let's try this again.
First, my argument is purely from the perspective of increasing state revenues. I’m not worrying about the ethical/health/illegality issues, even if they’re relevant.
Right now, small “groups” grow and sell weed. It’s a substantial cash crop, as has been alluded to on this thread. When they get this cash, they have to launder it. So, the weed profit is shown as “restaurant” or some other business profit. This business profit is taxed. So, the state is currently making tax revenue from weed, although it’s very hard to tell how much.
Post-legalization, major tobacco companies like Altria will move speedily into weed. weed “cigarettes” if you will… The big problem, for California, is that most likely, they will not grow in California. They’ll grow in their existing Tobacco-belt, for supply chain efficiency.
California will get sales tax/other taxes on the weed cigarette sales, but in the end, the direct income that the illegal growers get now would shift to other states.
So yeah, laundering is good insofar as it lets some taxation of weed profit occur. Most important though, is the fact that direct revenues from weed might shift ought of state.
Kerjillions of dollars are spent every year eradicating pot farms and dealing with cartels in the US, not to mention the $$ saved on incarcerating millions of Tommy Chongs who are locked up on pot crimes. All this would be returned. Furthermore, I’m sure there will be plenty of pot farms in California, since tobacco is still plenty profitable to grow and I don’t think RJR would suddenly rip up millions of acres on a whim.
I'm Fijian. Yes, the water is like that.
by Spazzy Mcgee on Feb 23, 2009 3:48 PM PST up reply actions
Are you serious? You do realise A) that “tax revenue” is relatively marginal, B) big companies won’t move into weed right away due to stigma, etc., C) small farms will still grow them, albeit legally.
I declare you Sanchez.
No
On A)…you really have no way to measure it. But, I’ll concede the point because it’s irrelevant.
THE IMPORTANT POINT is that weed is a $500 million industry for California, which might move out.
Your B point is literally laughable. Let me see, tobacco company worried about stigma. Seriously Rishi? Some reports suggest they already have trademarks on things like “Marlboro Greens”
You C point is historically false. The tobacco industry is heavily centralized, as is the Alcohol industry. Economies of scale for big companies… Plus a marketing advantage, and reliability/consistency advantage.
Finally, on the C point, even if they did still grow, price would plummet with increased supply via big companies, decreasing revenue.
Your argument has more holes than a colander
-There’s no evidence to suggest that a majority of profits from pot are taxed
-There is, again, no conclusive evidence to suggest that legalization would lead to less pot being grown in the state.
-You’re ignoring the massive police and prison costs incurred by the state due to pot being illegal
-etc. etc.
I outworthless the Maharg.
You were doing great until your last point there. Etc etc? I disagree!

I outworthless the Maharg.
I answered your #2 when answering Rishi
But to reiterate, they are likely to use existing supply chains (tobacco processing plants), and big companies have economies-of-scale advantages.
On the Police/Prison costs argument. I’d bet the majority of Police/Prison costs are for meth. No one is enforcing Weed now, so there’d be no cost savings. Seriously, no-one goes to jail for long for distributing weed, and enforcement is minimal at best. Meth is the real story on this issue.
PLUS, the people of Humboldt county, unable to compete in the weed market with Altria (you’re a fool if you think they can) will have to find new markets. I bet you’d see an increase in the Meth problem.
Since CA is going to be years ahead of legalizing pot relative to North Carolina, what makes you so sure the tobacco companies are going to waltz right in? If anything I’d give the nod to California farms…
And no, TONS of people go to jail for pot crimes. Either way, there would be huge administrative costs saved just for processing weed-related crimes.
PLUS, the people of Humboldt county, unable to compete in the weed market with Altria (you’re a fool if you think they can) will have to find new markets. I bet you’d see an increase in the Meth problem.
Or, gee whillickers and god forbid, they get normal jobs like normal people…

Remember, I'm more about what will happen, not what should
Your time-frame argument is good. But on the time-scale of 10 years, I think california legalization would lead to nation-wide. Other states wouldn’t be able to stop inter-state smuggling anyway, so they’d just legalize.
On the jail-time issue, we’re just trading claims, with no evidence. I can just tell you, that from what I hear, pot is rarely enforced. That’s why communities like Humboldt so blatantly exist. Since Meth Labs go boom (and because Meth is fucked up), they’re priority #1 for enforcement.
On your #3, regarding normal jobs, I’m just saying that there probably will not be solid jobs for them to go to. Heard of the recession? Look, that’s where this started. If a 500Million dollar industry moves out of state, we have a big problem.
Tobacco will waltz right in, because there’s money to make. You’re right that there might be a transition period where California farmers benefit, but I’m fairly sure that long-run, they will be outcompeted. Plus, you having answered my price-drop argument. If Weed is legalized, it’s like Corn-no profit margins for small farms, only mega-farms.

Most of Dubai’s population is foreign-born – largely South Asian but also a fair number of Europeans. A lot of those people are skipping town because the economy is tanking. But there are also a lot of rich tourists and rich locals.
I outworthless the Maharg.
Construction is still doing well in Dubai, its one of the few places architects are still in demand. And yes, the Vegas on steroids analogy is accurate. Almost every building there attempts to be an international landmark, there are very little ‘normal’ buildings. But beware, don’t have sex on the beach there.

Well my caps post came simply because I made the exact same points you did regarding the exact same posters numerous times yet I was chastised for it.
My best advice for how we can balance both the seriousness and the inanity is simply to remind posters to have a teensy bit more restraint. Instead of posting all five things that pop into your stream of consciousness, how about one? I mean, I have my fair share of inane/silly posts, but it’s just that: my fair share. Never really enough to completely drown out ANY Cal related info.

Well, I apologize if you feel that I was chastizing you for it. You seemed to say that I was. Others have certainly raised the same point, calling the DBD “a clusterfuck.” And, intrestingly enough, when Rishi was blocked, our DBDs had like 300 fewer comments.
I don’t disagree with all of those points. However, going forward, I think most, if not all, legit posts being on the far left edge with all legit posts being green with liberal use of the “z” key, it should address these concerns.

1. Start enforcing that the DBD be Cal- / Berkeley- / Pac-10-related only through moderation and pruning.

I can’t help but feel as if often much of the inanity starts as a serious discussion and then lends itself to inanity. Even this sub-thread itself started as a link to the NFL combine stuff. It quickly (and I mean QUICKLY) fell away from that.
Moreover, the DBD was designed to help minimize FanPosts so as to keep them from falling off the page quickly. Starting 2 new FanPosts each morning seems counterproductive to that.

Look, this inside minute-by-minute banter between 5-10 regulars is a LOT for me to process daily and I’m a quasi-regular. I can’t help but feel it ends up turning off a lot more people than it tickles. How it starts is irrelevant to the point.: with moderation, it could be stopped or moved. If you guys don’t think it’s a problem or don’t want to deal with it, well, it’s your site, bully for you. Just chiming in that someone with a more pure sports background might not want any part of a sight with so many asides and snarks and etc from the peanut gallery. Personally, I wouldn’t mind being ridiculous in a place clearly labeled “ridiculous”. I already try not to be ridiculous in anything on the main page. Bully for me.
I also try to keep the insanity limited solely to the DBD. And I think we do a good job at that. I do appreciate your comments here. I’m just not sure that having a sports-only DBD would stay all that serious.

A suggestion
Since some people seem to be (understandably) irritated by having to wade through a sea of tote bags, Maharg memes, and unintelligible comments from Twist…
Other internet communities that I have been unfortunate enough to have frequented have restricted off-topic discussion to one specific location.
Two possible ways of doing this at CGB:
1. Instead of just a DBD, have two daily threads: one for discussing Cal Sports, one for off-topic stuff
2. Allow the DBD to remain partially/substantially off-topic and post individual threads for individual sports-related topics
Just a thought.

Over 1,000 people find this site a day. I doubt they all read the DBD. But many, many do. So, even if there are a few vocal people saying “z key! z key! Its so easy!” it is not so easy when there are 890 comments to z through. I am trying to find ways to balance it all. I think that we’ve gotten a good compromise with the green the Cal stuff on the far left, but am, of course, open to hearing all these new ideas. ZooNews and HolmoePhobe have had some great ideas. I’m not sure if they ill be implemented, but lets keep the braisntorming going!

RE: Identifying serious Cal content

Rec’ing serious content just to identify it within the DBD doesn’t make sense to me. Why are we wasting one of our most powerful tools on this blog when an easier, less confusing, solution is available.
1) First, the person that is posting the serious content should do the identifying.. b/c everyone can’t be counted on to consistently rec them. And the poster knows best what the content is.
2) Rec’ing is one of the best tools we have to highlight interesting content and to encourage eachother…. diluting this tool is sorta a waste.
SOLUTION:
The poster of important Cal news/content should identify it with something in the subject line.
“CAL: Pain Train jumps 37” at combine"
“CAL CAL CAL: Pain Train jumps 37” at combine"
“= Pain Train jumps 37” at combine"
…etc. Just enough to
That’s not a clear enough identifier. When people are picking through hundreds of comments, it’s going to take them as long to look for those three letters as to skim the post and figure out what it’s about.
I outworthless the Maharg.
How about the entire subject line as “CAL CAL CAL CAL CAL CAL CAL”
and the headline can be included in the main box.
Whatever the solution, I just wanted to say that using our Rec tool for double purposes is not a good idea. (especially when you need two other people to make the post green).
Another reaosn why the green color is important. It catches th eye and stops the skim.
TYRANNICAL KING OF UC EUGENE! BRING ME THE HEAD OF SEATTLE QUACKER!
www.CaliforniaGoldenBlogs.com
I know… it visually identifies the post and makes you stop… however, now the color green can mean two different things instead of one.
If all we need is a way to visually draw attention to something… then I think we can think of something without sacrificing the rec tool.
We could start every post with a new Highlight video. ::coughs::
You ain't got it like Marshawn got it
by Thoroughbred on Feb 23, 2009 5:28 PM PST up reply actions 1 recs
I think that we can use all of these ideas. People making the posts can make clearly identifiable markings regarding this.
Nonetheless, I think the green color instinctively catches the eye and breaks it up. I’m not sure I’m as concerned about “diluting” the green color by putting it on the far left. A lot of SHITTY SHITTY SHITTY SHITTY posts are green (thanks mostly to The Maharg ;)!), so people are aware that not EVERY single green post isg oing to be amzing.
Nonetheless, I think every single green post does catch peoples eye as they skim down. I do like your thought, tho!
TYRANNICAL KING OF UC EUGENE! BRING ME THE HEAD OF SEATTLE QUACKER!
www.CaliforniaGoldenBlogs.com
The prob I have with using one tool for two purposes is that it causes confusion.
What if I block quoted this and linked the article:
Desean disses Cal
Desean Jackson was quoted as saying… “I regret going to Cal… it’s a horrible school and a horrible city… I should’ve gone to USC.”
… now we would have to rec this post and make it green… but there will be others that will want to naturally flag this post as well (to show displeasure at Desean’s quote), or at the very least, not want to rec it.
This is confusing and I think just a waste of a powerful tool. Having the entire subject line be CAL CAL CAL CAL is enough of a visual break to serve as an identification tool… plus there’s gotta be a better solution out there than using one of our most popular tools for this task.
I guess our disagreement stems from the relative value of the green color. You believe that it should be saved for only the best posts. But I think it, essentially, has already been sufficiently devalued by its previous usage. People use it for funny jokes, for example. A post of mine from above that only reads “SHE MAJORED IN SLAVERY?!?!” is green.
Moreover, the fact that in this sea of inanity, the green means “READ THIS, LEGIT CAL CONTENT!” would only seem to STRENGTHEN the value of the green. I don’t see how it dilutes the color, except that it would be used more.
But it would be used more for genuinely legit purposes.
I guess I would appreciate people’s views on whether they feel the green color is too sacred to be used here.

Interesting idea. I will contact the higher ups regarding it.
TYRANNICAL KING OF UC EUGENE! BRING ME THE HEAD OF SEATTLE QUACKER!
www.CaliforniaGoldenBlogs.com
That’s right… and also the diff in our opinions have to do with practicality. I think the person posting the serious content is the best person to identify it b/c he knows what he’s posting.
This rec identifying system requires at least 3 individuals (poster and 2 rec’ers) to create an identification.
ALSO
Now we can’t simply give props to great articles that are linked in or any mini-analysis that a few of us do from time to time. If T-bread were to do a mini-analysis regarding our recruits with stats, pictures and real content… he wouldn’t know if we are rec-ing it because we think his analysis is great and we agree with him, or because it’s just Cal content. Plus what if his stats and news were accurate but his analysis was totally wrong or immature… we would still have to rec it anyway.
EXAMPLE
Sometimes CalSeth would do a mini-analysis on Nate… with linked articles, block quotes and stats etc… but would then would go off on Nate and call him the anti-Christ. With this system his post would be green… indicating that many of us agree with his opinions, when really it prob was just the opposite.
Your last 2 paragraphs are about FanPosts.
TYRANNICAL KING OF UC EUGENE! BRING ME THE HEAD OF SEATTLE QUACKER!
www.CaliforniaGoldenBlogs.com
Mini-analysis in terms of something that is too small for a FanPost.
For instance when I review how our girl’s volleyball team did the previous night. I’m sure you don’t want it as a Fanpost (nor woudl I want it as a Fanpost since they play 2-3 matches per week).
Plus what about the time reviewed the previous night’s volleyball performance and also added that I thought Cat Riley was being benched because she was too fat. Many people (including me in hindsight) thought that crossed the line. However, that post still would’ve been green…. when in reality people should’ve been flagging me for that.
I’m not sure that the smartest thing to do is to make a policy based on the most extreme examples of it. Although its true that in some extreme situations, it would create cognitive dissonance, overall it wouldnt create that situation at all. Overall it just helps pluck out a post with a single link or so from the noise to make it easier to read. And if that isnt something that we, the moderators and readers, want at CGB then I dont know what is.
NOnetheless, I have heard all of your concerns and will contact the higher ups tonight to see if they can create a button for “moderator selections” that might be a blue color. For those who are concerned that green might be ruined, it would avoid that.
And for those who begged for a Sanchez button, your dream might (emphasis on might) come true. When I know more I will tell more.
But until then, I think that the reccing green AND using the ALL CAPS TITLES working together should be sufficient.

My two Bellotti Bucks worth...
I typically enjoy reading the DBDs, even if I can’t keep up with them. I usually check out the cal links regardless of the fact that I’m a duck. But when I get busy at work, and gander over to CGB, and see that the DBD has 500+ posts, I usually wait until I have more free time, like after work or during the weekend.
Without the bloggers really tightening their grip around the content, and deleting posts, banning people, blah blah blah, I don’t see it stopping. And to do that, it would really destroy a lot of what makes CGB, THE CGB.
This is a funny, painful, mind numbing and intense blog, yet it is also full of rather intelligent people, that can usually have differential opinions thrown around. For me, that is a recipe of an enjoyable read. Does this freedom open an environment to rub people the wrong way? Sure it does, but if it were to get locked down more, this wouldn’t be CGB, a blog with one of the best communities. It would be a Golden Bears version of Bruins Nation.
In addition, I am willing to bet that the majority of casual readers don’t read through the comments unless there are only a handful of them. They read through the initial post and links, and then check the next day. And that the majority of enthusiast readers will read/skim through the comments.
This is an active community, if the worst side of it comes out during the “not-as-important day-to-day” stuff, and not the “front page” materials: woopty-freakin-do.

Could you have different colors? Blue for Cal content and gold for recommended matters? Then they could be combined to become green for recommended Cal matters. Or would that be just way too complicated?
(Maybe the Department of Homeland Security could create a color code for this site. They’ve already got a good start on it since on the DHS scale, red is the color for an imminent terrorist attack.)

Idea: all Cal related material goes ENTIRELY in blockquote.

Ha! Good luck getting blockquote to agree to that!

Idea: we have little images to the right of the comment
And readers can just skim until they see an image that represents valid material. For example, a reader could see this to the left of a comment:
and just keep skimming down the page,
or they could see this:
and know that the comment will be the defining moment in their life.
the Maharg is above catch phrases
That’s actually a pretty good idea. Thanks to the FAQ written last week, it should be better understood how blockquotes work (or more precisely, do not work) so this is a viable solution. The blockquotes stand out just as much as green posts and if anything needs to be blockquoted you can put a
blockquote
inside a blockquote.

Ok, green color, Cal thing, AND blockquotes. But if we get blue, thatll help, too

What I’m saying is that you don’t need to rec Cal posts because the blockquotes stand out enough on their own. Now recs won’t be wasted and legitimate content will still stand out.

That does create a color, hmmm. I still think this whole thing about “wasting” recs is foolish, but am willing to try blockquotes. Let’s try blockquotes AND title for a bit and see where it takes us.
Compromise?

Sounds good. I’ll post links accordingly in tomorrow’s DBD and we’ll see how well it works.

Sure, I’ll write up a brief explanation on the new method of posting of links and gather some links to use as examples.

Dont forget to explain that this is, for right now, temporary and we’ll know more in the future.
Also, make it funny.

Serious Cal Sports News
Feb 21st 2009: Cal 91/9 (20) Stanford 87/9 (20) Cal wins by 4 runs.
Epic win over arch-rival. Too bad cricket is not an NCAA sport. In fact, this was, for all intents and purposes, an IM match. But a win over Stanford rocks.
I declare you Sanchez.

Ashley Walker is Player of the Week
Ashley Walker has been named Pac-10 Player of the Week for the third time this year:

The Cal women have moved back up to #4 in the AP poll (and #2 Oklahoma lost tonight).
There’s no excuse for not having great fan support for the last two games Walker and Hampton will play at Haas on March 5 and 7, so get out there to see some great basketball. Every seat in the house is $10 ($1 for kids under 18 on Saturday).
