DBD 2.19.2009: You and me and Hydro makes three
As Hydro has said a couple times now, there will be a CGB get-together Sunday at Golden Gate Fields where we will feast on $1 hot dogs, $1 beers, $1 parking, and jokes about how TwistNHook's wife wouldn't let him attend. As of now, it looks like I am the only one (besides Hydro) who has committed to going, unless it rains. The Maharg won't be there, so there is no excuse for being afraid of attending. We promise it will be a good time and that if Twist attends (rather, if his wife lets him attend) he won't honk people excessively.
Anyway, let us post some delicious links.
Alex Mack sprained his ankle and will miss the combine. It shouldn't matter much since his draft stock is so high.
But Cignetti, who is from Pittsburgh, said he couldn't pass up the opportunity to return home and even took a pay cut. His first coaching job was as a grad assistant for the Panthers in 1989.
"When you look at the cost of living, that's where you have to make a decision," Cignetti said at a news conference. "And there are so many things that are more important than money. How important it is to live back at home, to have my kids grow up around their grandparents, my wife's family, their cousins — to me, you can't put a price tag on that."
The Pittsburgh job may also be more of an opportunity for Cignetti to make an impact. Although he was the coordinator at Cal, Tedford was still heavily involved in offensive game planning. Pittsburgh coach Dave
Wannstedt is a defensive-minded coach, meaning Cignetti may be able to make more of an imprint on the program. But Cignetti said that didn't play a role in his decision.
"It was no factor," he said. "Jeff Tedford has been awesome. Working for him the last year has been unbelievable. Just because Jeff was an offensive-minded guy and Dave is a defensive-minded guy — that had nothing to do with this decision. This was just a great opportunity to work at a great institution and do it while being close to my family."
Tedford was unavailable for an interview but said in a statement: "Frank did a good job for us in his one year here. His family ties are very strong, and this is a great opportunity for him to get back to his hometown and for his kids to grow up with both sets of grandparents. Frank went to school in Pennsylvania, and his father was a longtime college coach in the area. He has aimed to get back there for some time, and we wish him well."
Jerome Randle's brother moved from Chicago to stay with him:
Randle decided during the offseason to bring his 18-year-old brother, Jeremy, to Berkeley. Randle has helped his brother, who had never been outside of Chicago and was running in "the wrong circles," get into Berkeley City College - where he's studying business - get a job on Telegraph Avenue and get an apartment in El Cerrito.
"There's nothing going on back in Chicago," Randle said. "There are a lot of crazy things happening back there. I just wanted him to see a different atmosphere and see the other side of the world."
It works both ways.
Jeremy Randle, who is nearly half a foot taller than his 5-foot-10 brother, holds Jerome Randle accountable. When Jerome Randle isn't playing well, isn't working hard or isn't studying enough, "Lil' Big Bro'," as he's called, steps in.
"I know how tough our childhood was and how we struggled, so it's easy for me to tell him he's messing up," Jeremy Randle said.
In that way, this season has been a perfect storm of maturation for Jerome Randle. He has someone he loves relying on him and holding him responsible, has a coach who isn't leashing his talents and has a team that has seen the other side of being 8-4 in the conference.
"Ultimately it comes down to the ability to get down to business and get where you want to get," coach Mike Montgomery said. "He's a kid that would never let you know that he's studying or doing what he's supposed to do, but he does. He'd just a soon you never know he's doing it."
Farudo's boss posts some links on the upcoming Oregon games.
Marshawn is at a crossroads in his career:
Lynch was lucky three years ago when gunshots were fired into his
mother's home; the shooters later said it was a case of mistaken identity. They even apologized to Marshawn's mother.
Lynch was both lucky and infamous last May when the SUV he was driving in downtown Buffalo hit a pedestrian. Lucky because her injuries were minor — she was treated and released — and infamous because his slow road to admission came with utter reluctance.
Though Marshawn pleaded guilty and received relatively light punishment, he didn't "man up" in a way that would make his mama proud.
Less than nine months later, Lynch is back in consultation with his attorney, having been stopped last week in the Los Angeles area and arrested on a felony charge of possession of a concealed weapon.
To recap, Marshawn has avoided bullets, dodged a manslaughter charge and, now, been caught carrying a gun.
Though he still is young, 22, history has taught us careers that begin like this don't always end well.
Ted Miller looks at Pac-10 kickers for 2009. Cal rates as "in good shape":
California: Giorgio Tavecchio was a late addition to the team, but he hit nine of 13 with a long of 42.
Now, let us post some delicious links (OM NOM NOM) in memory of Rishi, who is no longer with us. May his company's sense of decency rest in peace.
The opinions expressed in a FanPost are, in every way, reflective of the opinions of every California Golden Blogs Marshawnthusiast. Moreover, they are reflective of every employee of SBNation, including Tyler "Blez" Bleszinski.

I liked his story better when it was just about family...
On what makes Pitt a better job than the one he had at Cal: "What makes it better in my mind is that when you look at, first, this university has great academics and that is where it all starts. When you look at the history of this football program, it has been done here before — national championships, Heisman trophies, great players. When you look at the Big East, you have a chance to compete for and win championships and get to the BCS every year. So when you look at the ingredients of a great football program, it is all right here at the University of Pittsburgh."
On the deciding factor: "The deciding factor was Coach Wannstedt. It all starts with the head coach and the discussions we had over the weekend and the last couple of days definitely sold me on taking this job at the University of Pittsburgh."

Cignetti’s an asshole. Or at least that was my first reaction. Then I realized that he’s right; We don’t have Heisman’s, national championships, we don’t have a chance to get to the BCS every year. So therefore based on his argument, we don’t have the ingredients of a great football program?

I for one, didn’t know that Pitt had national champships, heisman award winners, or good academics, but the Big East is an easier path tot he BCS.

Of course he’s gonna speak well of the school he’s going to. You expect him to say, “yeah, this school is nothing compared to Cal but I can have my kids raised with more family around and that’s what’s important”
And the Big East doesn’t have the big USC monster in the way of a BCS bowl.
Well he could be a tad more gracious. Saying the reason why it is better is because of academics is ridiculous. And, saying it is better because he now has a shot at a BCS and MNC is just as nuts. Fact is, Cal has been much more successful on the football field than Pitt over the last 7 years and Pitt, while a decent school, isn’t in the same league as Cal and never will be.
I wouldn’t mind if he emphasized all the positives about Pitt, that would be fine. But when someone asks why it is better and he lists of those factors, he disses Cal.
It'll be just you, me, and Peter Nincompoop.

On the flip side, if someone asks “Why is Pitt a better school to work for than Cal?” and Cignetti just answers “Well, my family’s here, and that’s about it…”

Pitt, I believe, is a good school – especially in Medicine…better than Cal? I don’t think so but it’s hardly a shabby school:
The University of Pittsburgh, commonly referred to as Pitt, is a state-related4 research university located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, United States. Chartered in 1787, Pitt is highly regarded in academic fields ranging from philosophy to medicine,56 and is well known for the development of the first Polio vaccine as well as its landmark centerpiece building, the Cathedral of Learning.
Founded as Pittsburgh Academy in 1787 on what was then the American frontier, Pitt is one of the oldest continuously chartered institutions of higher education in the United States. Pitt evolved into the Western University of Pennsylvania with an alteration to its charter in 1819, and upon relocating to its current campus in the Oakland neighborhood of Pittsburgh in 1908, the school received its current moniker, the University of Pittsburgh. For most of its history, Pitt was a private institution until it became part of the Commonwealth System of Higher Education in 1966.7
Pitt’s rise from its humble frontier beginnings to its current stature is due in part to its ability to withstand early pressures to abandon its commitment to liberal education.89 Along the way Pitt has achieved strong reputations in a variety of academic disciplines including philosophy, physics, astronomy, history of science, creative writing, chemistry, business, biological sciences, jazz, engineering, education, international studies, and a variety of medical and health sciences.5 In 2006 Pitt was placed in the top cluster of 7 leading U.S. public research universities and among the clusters comprising the overall top 26 research universities10, was ranked in U.S. News & World Report’s top 20 public universities,11 and has also been recognized as one of the top universities in the world by multiple studies.121314 Pitt regularly produces internationally recognized scholarship and fellowship award winners.15
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/University_of_Pittsburgh
Cal has won 2 NC’s…although zero since 1937. They have 0 Heisman winners
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/California_Golden_Bears_football
Pitt, who was independent until 1990, has 9 “claimed” NC’s and 1 Heisman winner.
The University of Pittsburgh claims nine National Championships for the Panthers football team: 4 that are mostly unanimous, (1916, 1918, 1937, and 1976) and 5 shared titles (1915, 1929, 1931, 1934, 1936).
The University bases its claim for the first 8 national championships on a study conducted in 1970 by Sports Illustrated 12. These championships, together with its unanimous championship of 1976, are the basis for the university’s claim of 9 national championship seasons.

Tedford...if you're reading this...I'LL WORK FOR FREE! I'll fill out your Coach's Poll!
The 1976 championship is impressive and all, but honestly, in my life-time they are one of the few “major” programs that has been crappier than Cal.
by Tedfordisgod on Feb 19, 2009 10:22 AM PST up reply actions
As for academics, Pitt is probably equivalent to UC San Diego, where it is a good school, only with a regional focus. Hence, we never hear about them.
As for the National Championships and Heisman Winners, I don’t think having one heisman winner constitutes a history of heisman winners. And the national championships are rather comprable to those of Cal with exception to the 1975 title.
They're after our precious bodily fluids
Pitt actually has a great business school, Wharton, which is ranked higher than Haas in the MBA rankings, and about even with Haas in undergrad rankings. But I have no idea about their other programs.

First off, Riley needs some continuity. Longshore got to study under Rodgers and got schooled in the traditional Tedford QB mold for two years before he played a full season. Riley never really had that. Riley’s true freshman year was under Dunbar. Then Dunbar left, and it was Daft in 2007, who never played under Tedford. Then Cignetti came in. Now it’s going to be someone new.
Riley’s mechanics were already an issue, and now they are going to get messed with again. Cignetti changed some things, for example the lifting of the back foot in the follow through. If you watch Rodgers, Ayoob’s or Longshore’s 2006 highlights, they did not do that. But Longshore and Riley both did that this season. Might seem minor, but for a young guy who is trying to get comfortable with the offense, another methodology is going to muddy the water a bit.
Second, Cignetti changed the pass protection schemes. Now that will have to change again, which means one more potential execution problem.
Third, if someone new comes in, they are going to have to integrate what they do with what Tedford’s offense does. That is going to take time, and there are going to be hiccups.
Finally, if Tedford ends up calling the plays and game planning, it is going to take away from his management of the team and the big picture, which is his job as a head coach.
A lot of people were down on Cignetti’s playcalling this year. I disagree. I thought he called very good games. The problem was execution. In that regard, I think this loss is going to hurt a bit more than people realize. Plus, the table is set for a nice run this year, getting USC early, having all conference talent at d-line and cornerback, a heisman candidate runningback, and returning starters at the skill positions on offense.

Shantrell Sneed on the women’s b-ball team has a blog:
Our performance Saturday night at Stanford was nothing short of disappointing. It was second-rate for not only the faithful Cal fans that trekked across the Bay Area in sub-optimal weather conditions, but most importantly to ourselves. No one could have predicted that outcome given the display we put on in our first meeting. In our earlier game this season against the Cardinal was spearheaded by a commendable 37-point career-high performance by Lex, and quite possibly the best collective defensive effort we have put forth this season.
Going into the game Saturday for the second go-around with Stanford, everything felt so right. Our players were amped, adrenaline surged through all of our veins, and there was seemed to be a subtle, yet pronounced sense of urgency that would only last the first 20 minutes of the war waged by the Cardinal. We went into the second half with the lead, and were up by as much as 10 in the second half. Good teams falter at the early onset of adversity, but great teams respond and go down fighting, as Stanford did. If we thought the outcome of our first game was in any way indicative of how our second game would play out, then we were sadly mistaken. Jane Appel was the general of her team that night, and everyone followed her command, yet no savior emerged from out bench that night. They created their own luck, and we beckoned our own demise with a lack of a sense of direction, purpose, and inspiration. They couldn’t miss, and it appeared as if we couldn’t stop them. Games like this are always the hardest to watch for me because you see your team needs a lift, a burst of energy, anything, something, yet there’s only so much you can do from the sideline.
Softball beats Santa clara:
BERKELEY – Valerie Arioto was spectacular at the plate and in the circle in Cal’s 11-0 win (in five innings) over Santa Clara in the home opener at Levine-Fricke Field on Wednesday. The sophomore blasted a grand slam in the second inning and pitched her first shutout of the season and striking out nine in the process.
Cal (8-1) takes its No. 9 ranking to Palm Springs for the Cathedral City Classic, Feb. 20-22. The Bears face Ole Miss and North Carolina State on Friday.
The Bears have now outscored their opponents this season 76-16, including three shutouts.
“It always feels good to go out there and help the team anyway I can,” said Arioto. “I just jumped on the right pitch [referring to the grand slam]. I hope I can continue to improve at the plate against some tough competition this weekend. Pitching wise I had a few different things working and I was able to keep their hitters off-balance today.”
Arioto, who has 25 strikeouts in her last 12 innings pitched, also went 2-for-3 from the dish with two runs and six RBI.
Gina Leomiti had a triple and two RBI, while Shannon Thomas collected two hits and a run. Frani Echavarria, Taylor Kelly and Elia Reid all had two runs as well.
After a scoreless first inning, Cal got things going in the second and took a 5-0 lead on the Broncos. With the bases loaded after an Echavarria single, Kelly drew a walk allowing Vernae Sevilla (who led off the inning with a walk) to score. After Elia Reid reached on a fielder’s choice (Sanoe Kekahuna out at the plate), Arioto stepped up and delivered the grand slam over the left-center field wall.
Womens water polo heads to Irvine:
This Week in Cal Water Polo
The No. 5 California women’s water polo team (13-0 overall and 1-0 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation) travels south to the UC Irvine Invitational from Feb. 21-22. The Golden Bears open the tournament with a game against host No. 12 Irvine (6-2) at 12:45 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 21. Cal will either see No. 4 UCLA (7-2, 1-0 MPSF) or No. 13 Long Beach State (2-3) in the second game on Saturday. Cal’s opposition for the remainder of the tournament will be decided upon its results. For complete invitational results, please consult UCI’s Website for the tournament by clicking here.
Golden Bear History at the Irvine Invitational
Cal took third place at last year’s tournament, posting a 3-1 record with a 9-8 upset over then-No. 3 USC. The UC Irvine Invitational is in its third season, and the Bears have participated in the invitational in each year. In 2007, Cal took fourth place with wins over UC San Diego and Hawaii. This year’s tournament features the current top-14 teams in the country and 16 of the top-20.
Recently in Cal Water Polo
The Bears earned their first conference win with a 9-4 victory over No. 7 San Jose State on Feb. 14. Cal had four unanswered goals to finalize the win. Three different Golden Bears – junior driver Meghan Corso, freshman driver Emily Csikos and junior utility Camille Hewko – had two goals each. In the third period with the Bears up by one, 3-2, Corso banged her shot off the right post and in, and at 3:57, junior Julie Oreglia took a cross-pool pass from the left from Csikos and scored for a 5-2 Cal lead. The Spartans scored two more goals in the third period, and none in the final period, while the Bears scored three more in the final period to take the game, 9-4.
Womens tennis player wins award:
BERKELEY – California women’s tennis sophomore Mari Andersson was named the Muscle Milk California Student-Athlete of the Week after her performances at the 2009 ITA National Team Indoor Championship in Madison, Wis.
Andersson won five of her six matches (three singles, two doubles) at the and helped the Golden Bears advance to the semifinal for the first time since 2004. The Sweden native claimed two-set victories over three different ranked opponents in singles play beginning with No. 111 Keri Wong of Clemson, 6-2, 7-5. She then took out No. 27-ranked Christy Striplin of Georgia Tech, 6-1, 6-4. Although the Bears couldn’t win the team match, Andersson still won her match on the second court when she defeated No. 100 Yvette Hyndman of Georgia, 7-6, 6-0.

Breaking News:
Pitchers Frequently Experience Arm and Shoulder Injuries!
Honestly, it is pretty much impossible to predict whether a given pitcher is more or less likely to get injured if he doesn’t have any history of injury. You can’t say, “oh, player X got hurt, player Y is similar to player X in A, B, and C ways, therefore, player Y is at a higher risk of injury.” Its just too easy for some random freak thing to happen to a pitcher. One tweak in the wrong place, and they could be done…
Alright, fine, I admit it! "Hydration Technician" really DOES just mean "water boy!"
But if they are small. And they have violent motions. It bodes poorly.

that people think Timmy’s motion is so violent. It may be highly unconventional, but if you read what Tim, the trainers, and his dad have to say, it is actually a lot smoother and less stressful than a conventional motion.

it’s because he’s freakishly flexible, or something like that. if the giants weren’t so terrible, i’d totally want timmy on my fantasy team.
So, basically, you gotta Go Bears!
sure I can…we came up with 5 SP who’ve experienced moderate to career-limiting injuries…they all throw real hard, are smaller (6’ or less), bony, and have a high torque delivery. Tim Lincecum, off the top of my head, is the lone exception and he hasn’t been doing this for very long. Think age 29 when he’s in the middle of his 10 year 200 million dollar contract he signs with the Giants. It’s a little scary. Bottom line: SP aren’t worth the money…not even Lincecum when he resigns.

Highly Athletic and Not Fat = Bony?
If you haven’t read it, the SI cover story about Tim from July 7th, last year, was an excellent article examining not only Lincecum’s mechanics, but the mechanics of pitchers in general, and what causes pitchers to break down. Really a good article.

Verducci is a good writer and indeed that article is a good one. Lincecum might be the exception (and I hope he is). I think he literally would be the lone exception…which is even more amazing than his freakishly awesome results.
He’s only 24…I think he’s played 3 years of pro ball now (2 in the bigs)…he’s still young enough to get away with this, but I’ll remain skeptical until he hits 30. For now, I’m going to enjoy the pure dominance that he’s putting on display.

A few people have said this, but really predicting arm injuries is really hard.
Here is a link to the Lincecum SI cover story which is worth reading, for the sections on Mark Prior:
Ironically, Prior was often hailed for his “flawless” mechanics when the Cubs drafted the righthander out of USC with the No. 2 pick in 2001, though that assessment seems to have been influenced by scouts’ preference for his 6’ 5", 225-pound body type. Studied closely, his mechanics included two severe red flags: 1) Prior lifted his throwing elbow higher than his shoulder before reaching the loaded position, increasing the stress on his elbow and shoulder; and 2) unlike Lincecum’s dynamic late torso rotation, Prior rotated his hips and torso before getting to the loaded position. With the letters of Prior’s jersey already facing the target, his arm could not simply “go along for the ride” — the ride was over, so his arm had to generate all of its own power.
Basically, people see what they want to see in whether a guy has “good” or “bad” mechanics. The rest of the article is pretty well done too. It is unclear whether Lincecum will be the exception. But almost all pitchers have injury trouble at some point, so it really is almost irrelevant to point to individual examples.
After years of the A’s having all the decent young pitchers around, as a Giants fan, I will appreciate Lincecum now and not worry too much about him long-term.
by Tedfordisgod on Feb 19, 2009 4:03 PM PST up reply actions
even better than Verducci
http://www.drivelinemechanics.com/2008/06/12/pitcher-analysis-tim-lincecum/
they also like his mechanics…the main issue (as you know) with these types of guys are oblique/hip strains – Huddy and Harden especially. No, not all pitchers get injured and while it cannot be predicted with complete certainty this is one of the better predictors around – certainly there is strong precedence.
So far so good for Timmy…if he stays healthy he will be the lone exception – no inconclusiveness about it.

YO on Cignetti loss
Tedford didn’t hire Cignetti because he thought he was a brilliant offensive tactician. That’s not to say Tedford wasn’t impressed with Cignetti’s philosophies. Quite the contrary, Tedford never would have hired him if he didn’t feel Cignetti’s approach was a lot like his. But that’s just the point. Tedford brought in someone to call the plays for his offense. With our without Cignetti, Cal’s offense is Tedford’s offense.
We all know the motivation for hiring Cignetti. Tedford felt the need to shed playcalling duties so he could become a better CEO of the program. Tedford was still heavily involved in offensive scheming throughout the week, so that by the time the game came around, nothing Cignetti called would come as too much of a surprise. But with Cignetti there, Tedford could spend part of the week spending more time on other aspects of the program.
So the big question now is whether Tedford will keep the current arrangement or go back to calling the plays. He’s gone back and forth during his seven years at Cal. It was obvious it was a problem in 2007. But in other years, there didn’t seem to be any problems with it.
One of Cal’s sports information directors told me yesterday that Tedford didn’t specifically say he was bringing in a play caller but there was no reason to believe that he won’t. It appears Tedford won’t once again make himself offensive coordinator, like in 2007 (although Jim Michalczik had the title, he was more of an assistant head coach).
There may be some who feel this is bad timing with spring practice less than three weeks away. But again, this is Tedford’s offense. If there isn’t an offensive coordinator in place, Tedford can run the offense until the coordinator is brought in. It would be much more of a problem if it were defensive coordinator Bob Gregory who was leaving.

NEW TEXAS DT HAS US IN THE LEAD
ESPN 150 watchlist guy…
Guy has no reservations about going out-of-state to play football and the academic reputation of a school is one of the most important factors in his decision. That is a major reason a Pac-10 program has caught his attention more than any other school at this stage of the process.
“Cal, that’s a big-time school for me,” Guy said. “They are the No. 1 public school in the country and they also want me to come play right away. I’m one of the first players to be offered by them out of Eisenhower.”
It’s exceptional how ALL of the top DLs around the country are talking about us… especially guys from GA, NC, and TX

http://myespn.go.com/blogs/pac10/0-7-93/Will-Tedford-call-plays-again-.html
Calling plays is a huge job. Can Tedford find the right guy to do it? And can he find the right guy to coach his quarterbacks in the process?
Bears fans know that solid quarterback play could make or break 2009.
And, failing that: Is Tedford willing to again take over the play-calling duties? And, if so, does that mean he risks losing touch with his locker room again?
These are big questions, particularly considering that Cal has the talent to challenge for the Pac-10 crown next fall and reach its first Rose Bowl since 1959.
Trent Dilfer would be nice…if he could learn the offense fast enough…

Why is everything so dramatic? Every team can have a down year, but it doesnt need to be brought up every time you talk about them.

I don’t think Tedford wants to call plays again. He knows he can’t do that and monitor the team and the game as well if he does. I think he’ll only call plays again if he absolutely can’t find any one else to do it.
I rec people.

I don’t think Marshall would be the OC since I think it’s critical that the OL coach be on the field with his players.

I don’t know, just a general feeling that whatever makes TT quarterbacks not translate well probably works the same for receivers on some level + never being too impressed with him physically + him having far too much hype coming out of that Texas game

Likely 4-star
ESPNU 150 watchlist player. But he fits perfectly for the 3-4, so he’s 5-star in terms of Cal’s need.

Of course it's a not a given...
BUT he will be an December enrollee for us if he comes… Texas is not in the mix because they already filled their 2 spots (trust me, that is NO slight to him…. those guys were 4-3 guys). Texas A&M is our main comp, so what put us over the top is academics. He’s getting looks from every big program and has been offered by the likes of UCLA and Michigan.

Hi CGB! How have you guys been? God I miss you guys… So I have heard rumors that Cignetti is on the way out. As I feel out of the loop (what with work and all dominating my very existence) I was just wondering if anyone knew what was really up? If anyone is up at this hour reading this, and has pertinent info on the sittuation, could you please fill me in? Thanks guys.

Thanks Spazzy,
I really can’t believe this……. However, I believe this is good news. I was very disappointed with Riley this year, and Cigg as default must take blame. We need to get a good OC in here, one who knows what Tedford wants. Otherwise, Tedford will resume play calling and the rest of the team will fall apart. I was so hopeful Cigg was the answer, but when you look at Alex Smith you clearly know right away he isn’t. I really feel Tedford needs an OC much like himself when he was @ Oregon. Let us hope that such will be the future of the Bear that will under no circumstances quit……. We are not quitters!!!
