Super Bowl XLIII Open Thread

For those of you (like me) who have no rooting interest in today's Super Bowl, here's an open thread to discuss all things J.J. Arrington.  I'm pretty sure (not positive) that Arrington is the only former Golden Bear to participate in today's game.  For those of you who might be interested in a more active thread, I invite you to visit either Revenge Of The Birds (Cardinals) or Behind the Steel Curtain (Steelers), two excellent SBNation blogs devoted to the Super Bowl participants.

Arrington

Out of Arizona’s three backs, Arrington will probably see the field the least. I’m sure James and Hightower will get more playing time.

What's up with the gospel choir with the boss....

they always have to throw that type of shit into all musical acts as if it makes it better. I’m here to say the gospel choir jumped the shark a long time ago. Just saying what you all should be thinking.

Go Bears.

The Boss and gospel

Yes, Super Bowl halftime shows are often (usually) over-the-top gimmicky. But writing as a Springsteen fan for the last quarter-century, I found the choir to be authentic and very fitting. His music is deeply influenced by a variety of “folk” (broadly defined) American traditions—bluegrass, blues, honkytonk, and yes, gospel. And as was on full display from the outset, his persona leading the E-Street Band is very much one of a Sunday preacher. If not a musician, Springsteen could have also made millions as a televangelist.

The only thing gimmicky and inauthentic last night, I think, were all the fireworks and playing to the television cameras. But given the venue, I thought that was wholly appropriate. Best Super Bowl halftime show, ever, to go along with arguably the best Super Bowl game, ever—albeit one of the worst officiated.

I want The Who…not sure if they’ve already done a Super Bowl nor am I sure they’re in the Super Bowl’s price range…but those guys rock.

BearNecessity....

you’ve lost my respect in it’s entirety. You are a f’n joke – typical over the top liberal reaction to a statement you disagree with – play the race card. Way to go chief.

In my opinion – gospel choirs are horrible – notwithstanding the race of the members of said choir. The gospel choir bs ruined what was otherwise a great experience. Clarence Clemons rocked the sax as usual.

BearNecessity – you are a P.O.S. Just telling it like it is.

When I discussed with other Marshawnthusiasts whether to put up an open thread for the Superbowl, Yellow Fever jumped in and said “Wait, what if somebody puts up a controversial post about gospel choirs and then the racism card gets played.”

I thought it was the most ridic idea ever! How wrong I was. HOw wrong I was.

Look, I am sure that 33SS can be a bit brusque at times. And Im sure that his strong anti-Longshore views rub some people the wrong way. However, I find it wildly doubtful that his poor view on gospel choirs stems from the color of the singer’s skin. Theres certainly nothing in his comment that would make it seem racist at all. Avi’s comment was certainly out of left field there and not really relevant.

But SS, also, you aren’t doing the best job of holding hte moral high ground here. Let’s all just take a moment to calm down and step back from the situation. Its really not a big deal, theres no reason to continue to act unreasonable here. SS doesnt like gospel choirs. Avi thinks anybody who hates gospel choirs hates black people George bush hates black people. Rishi loves George bush. In conclusion, HONK.

HydroTech concurring in part, and dissenting in part

I concur with Twist’s above comment in whole except for the final two sentences of the third paragraph (which I’ve copied below), and the final three sentences of the fourth paragraph.

Theres certainly nothing in [33SwisherSweet’s] comment that would make it seem racist at all. Avi’s comment was certainly out of left field there and not really relevant.

I disagree. I’ll make the easy inferences which I’m sure other people probably made too.

gospel choirs are “horrible” and don’t make any musical acts any better → gospel choirs are comprised of mostly Black people → Black gospel choirs are “horrible” and don’t make any musical acts any better = insult to Blacks.

Now, whether Swisher meant this or not, I’m not sure. I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt and say he didn’t. However, I must disagree as to TwistNHook’s statement that Swisher’s comment in no way can have no racist interpretations. It clearly can be interpreted in a racist manner. I don’t think Avi’s comment was really out of left field. I am willing to bet other people also made the above inferences too.

Well to be honest

I made somewhat of the same comment to my friends (I dislike most Gospel like music – NOT A RACIST COMMENT!!) and they thought I was being racist. So I can see where Avi is coming from.

In other words, Go Bears!

Well, fair enough, perhaps my description of the comment was a bit extreme. However, I’m also, like you, willing to give SS the benefit of the doubt here and just hope that we can put this all behind us and continue to give our readers the endless supply of inane “NAILED IT!” responses that they come here for.

PS NAILED IT!

If JJ Arrington was the feature back instead of Edge, then the Cards would have won.

I don’t follow the Cardinals nor the NFL that much…why is The Edge/Hightower ahead of JJ on the depth chart? Neither of those guys strike me as that good.

I do follow the niners. JJ, with the niners emphasis on the running game, would be an excellent alternate to Frank Gore.

by carp on Feb 2, 2009 7:13 AM PST up reply actions

Being hobbled doesn’t help his cause (he was suffering from an injury of sorts. He doesn’t have much cutback ability like Edge and Hightower was a little bit better moving laterally. JJ needs a strong O-line ahead of him.

by BearsNecessity on Feb 2, 2009 7:30 AM PST up reply actions

o…is his injury recoverable or is this a semi-permananent thing?

by BearsNecessity on Feb 2, 2009 9:15 AM PST up reply actions

I was sort of kidding with the statement that JJ should be starting and that the result would have been a Cards win. Yeah, but Avi is right. JJ has been a bit injured and hasn’t shown the lateral movements to really be as effective as Edge and Dreads.

Steeler’s pass blocking was great (except for like 3 plays). Even when the Cards blitzed, everyone was almost always picked up and Ben had time to scramble and make things happen.

Cardinal pass blocking wasn’t as good and thus they were regulated to mostly short quick passes – of course, as noted on the telecast, the Steelers were playing their safeties deep too.

I think the Cards were at their best with their hurry up offense and spreading the field wide with 4-5 receivers.

The Cardinals kept on exploiting with the flat packages for most of the game with the safeties in deep coverage. That throw to Fitzgerald on the go-ahead score was sweet.

Potential go-ahead score.

Anyway, Bob Gregory’s D would have never given that score up!

by BearsNecessity on Feb 2, 2009 9:14 AM PST up reply actions

hahaha. To be fair, didnt it seem like the Cards D would get theSteelers into 3rd and 10 or whatever, then nearly sack Ben he’d scramble around for a while and then make the big throw for a 1st. That seemed to happen a lot.

Yeah, you’re right. The Cards were exploiting the flat areas with simple high-low routes on the flat defenders. I can’t help but think if the Cards had better pass blocking last night they could have won. I also think that the Cards should have abandoned the run earlier, and used the hurry-up more. They were averaging like 2 yards a run or something versus like 8 yards per pass attempt. Just statistically, that right there makes me want to go hurry-up and like 90% pass.

Everytime they put 4 wide and Arrington split out

They drove the ball with ease because someone got enough of a crease where Warner could hit ’em

You ain't got it like Marshawn got it
