Not even close. I felt stunned and shocked at that, but in my heart of hearts I knew that Oregon was a very good football team. I was hoping to catch them before they awoke.

Washington played well tonight, no question. But I can’t even fathom how we can lose by 32 points to them. I’m absolutely livid over this. Pissed the fuck off.

@Thoroughbred

Replying to your feedback from last quarter. I see it a little differently — I think Cal athletes are above average. Reason is I’ve seen Cal backs do man coverage against USC backs, but Cal seems to break down during zone coverage. Especially linebacker coverage of slant passing. Sometimes it’s up, sometimes it’s down. Those zone read, positioning, and angle issues are how they’re coached. That’s why I’m concerned. If Cal was always beat on man coverage, I’d agree with you that it’s mostly the athletes. Not saying it’s Gregory either, because I don’t know. But there’s a problem.

One thing, maybe you’re looking at the HS recruit starring system. But even on that account, Cal players are at least above average. And how many of us buy into the starring system, when Boise State beats Oklahoma or Kansas Beats Va Tech?

by crackpipe on Dec 5, 2009 6:26 PM PST reply actions

I’m just going to throw in my 2 (uneducated) cents here, but I think we keep forgetting that our LBs last year were all at least fringe NFL talent. We can’t even say that this year. Nor can we say that of anybody in our secondary (save for Squid).

On offense, Marvin Jones will be great, but no other WRs really have stood out.

Riley is also not an NFL talent (not yet, at least).

I keep bringing up NFL talent because that’s at least a decent way to gauge what kind of players we have.

i'm here to clean your pool but i don't have a pool *bowchica bowow*

Offense

Really has me puzzled. I might try to run some stats on the line next year to see if I can track what’s happening there. I can see the problems on D more easily, but it looks like you have a finger the O.

by crackpipe on Dec 5, 2009 6:32 PM PST up reply actions

I think we also can’t forget just how much pressure short kickoffs (and therefore good field position) places on our D. I don’t think Gregory’s schemes work well in short field situations.

i'm here to clean your pool but i don't have a pool *bowchica bowow*

by ch0ster on Dec 5, 2009 6:35 PM PST up reply actions

He does play them soft, but i’ve also seen some decent goal line stands when they play gaps aggressively. It’s hard to understand what’s changed. Maybe it is the talent.

by crackpipe on Dec 5, 2009 7:00 PM PST up reply actions

With regards to WRs

I like Lagemann and think he’s a good WR; just doesn’t seem to fit what the offense is doing?

by BleedinBlue on Dec 5, 2009 7:14 PM PST up reply actions

I see what you're saying, but...

Yeah, I don’t buy into the star system so much. I just feel the LBs have been beaten on coverage so often because they don’t look fluid or athletic at all, to the naked eye. I think it’s definitely a combination of both coaching and talent, but the lack of athletic LBs has been what’s stood out to me. I think the Cal secondary athletes are, as you described, above average and have been lacking in fundamentals and technique. I point to the LBs’ lack of athleticism though as the source of problems, namely HIP FLUIDITY as the worst part. I think their strength and discipline has been shown to be pretty good, given what we’ve been able to do against the run.

My rating is basically just waht I’ve viewed from watching tons of game. I put very little stock into the star ratings.

Like cocaine straight from Bolivia.

by Thoroughbred on Dec 5, 2009 6:31 PM PST up reply actions

and I can trace back a lot of the secondary troubles to the lack of pass rush. I mean, Simmons is considered a great coach in that regard… it’s just… weird. We’ll have to see how it goes next year because the team won’t have any hype or pressure

Like cocaine straight from Bolivia.

by Thoroughbred on Dec 5, 2009 6:34 PM PST up reply actions

I'm with you on that

I too rarely have seen quick LB reaction to the QB having the ball or not having the ball. Turn quickly, don’t stare. I’m seeing that too. If it’s both the horses and the coaches, I’m really going to hope for some improvement in this off season. I’m very frustrated with this season. Just didn’t feel the direction

by crackpipe on Dec 5, 2009 6:38 PM PST up reply actions

Understandable frustration

I thought they looked strong in Zona, Furd, and the noncoference at least, but today has just been a big step back. I could attribute a lot of it to the Huskies playing their best game and our layoff from the Big Game, but it’s tough, I know. They’re still my Bears, and I know Tedford sees these problems… so I’m looking forward to adjustments we get this year and the infusion of some new talent.

I really hope one of the incoming LBs is starting next year. I really just feel the incoming LBs need to be a talented group for us to succeed.

The Italian Stallion was kicking lights out against Arizona and D’amato has been a bit shaky this year. Then of course he misses the opening FG.

by SDBear on Dec 5, 2009 6:28 PM PST reply actions

Leg got infected from that tackle he made in the Arizona game. He hasn’t been kicking well in practice apparently.

Again, ALAAAMAR!!!!

I'd guess no just because most bowls try to avoid repeat attendees in consecutive years

I think the Sun Bowl has a clause explicitly prohibiting it, which is how Cal would have gone over OSU…

OL

by HydroTech on Dec 5, 2009 6:33 PM PST up reply actions

I would disagree

I think it has to be the defense. They were returning a lot of starters and it was their second year in the 3-4.

The OL was breaking in three new starters and Tepper hadn’t played in a year. Plus they were adjusting to a new coach. I think the OL had a lot more going against them to star than the defense.

by SDBear on Dec 5, 2009 6:37 PM PST up reply actions

I’d say OL too. I think we all drank the Kool-Aid that our D would be great this year, when we clearly had a talent dropoff from last season.

by ch0ster on Dec 5, 2009 6:38 PM PST up reply actions

I was expecting the D to just be okay, and I was expecting the OL to be sub-par. However, I wasn’t expecting the OL to be this bad.

by HydroTech on Dec 5, 2009 6:39 PM PST up reply actions

To the OL’s credit, they did have some good games and great run blocks too. But way too inconsistent. Too many games they just lacked explosiveness off the line, and any power.

Defense. I knew the OL would suck

gonna go with OL… I’d have to say pass rush has been sore too

by Thoroughbred on Dec 5, 2009 6:35 PM PST up reply actions

Biggest disappointment is the defense.
Biggest key to us sucking/losing is the OL.

by Kodiak on Dec 5, 2009 6:35 PM PST up reply actions

I’d love to go to the bowl game…if I could at least have some assurances that the Cal team of this game and Oregon promised not to show up. I might very well die of a broken heart if they did.

Mobile QBs Kill Us

A QB who can make our linebackers and safeties cheat up, then complete passes over the top, makes our weak defense look outright helpless. Masoli did it to us. Locker did it tonight. We suck against vanilla offenses, but this kind of O is built perfectly to exploit our suckiness to maximum effect.

No, I wasn’t commenting about his Riley comment. I was asking why he joined as soon as Rocked was booted. No avatar.

by danzig on Dec 5, 2009 6:42 PM PST up reply actions

LOL no I promise I am not that guy

I hope I havent been to negative, just a bad game to post about. Really I was just asking about Riley and his fumbles. Tedford hates turnovers and I would think Rileys ball security would be a major issue for Tedford.

by SDBear on Dec 5, 2009 6:46 PM PST up reply actions

I wonder if the guys got overcoached again. Seems like they played well against furd and Az when things were simplified. Too many clever schemes, keys and responsbilities could lead to playing slow.

by Kodiak on Dec 5, 2009 6:34 PM PST reply actions

isn't that the rap on the O-line?

Too many weird pro-style schemes and formations, and not enough “hit ’em in the mouth” like before? You can outthink this stuff big-time.

by VandyImport on Dec 5, 2009 6:36 PM PST up reply actions

Like you said, the reader can infer the impact of the new o-line coach.

Confusion

Anybody feel like the past three years Gregory has the players confused about where to go and who to cover?
I remember for Air Force, everybody was scrambling back to their coaches to find out what was up when they could.
In 2008 I think Syd and Hagan were playing much better because much of the pressure was taken off by the LBs, who could pull off a great blitz.
2009 has had some terrible coverage in zone, and picking on the guy opposite Syd is now the way to go.

Maybe having a new DC just for the sake of havingt a new one would help?

Is it possible Gregory’s regressed?

I know we talk a lot about the defense but they have no excuse for playing this bad

I know we don’t have the greatest of athletes, the 4 and 5 stars of other schools but you can’t tell me that Washington has so many talented players on their offense that they would just destroy the defense like they did tonight. Yes Locker is a great talent but besides him who scares you on that offense?

If we lost a close game that would be fine but Washington just stole our defenses soul tonight!

Thank you and once again I am sorry if I came off too negative tonight. I was just so

frustrated with Cals performance tonight.

Anyways I live in SD and actually bank with San Diego County Credit Union, who sponsors the Poinsettia Bowl. Maybe they will give me some free tickets?

Anyways if anyone comes down to SD and wants to organize a tailgate I would be willing to help. I live right by the Q and can bring the BBQ and carne asada.

It’s not that we are negativity police. People can give their opinions, both positive and negative. Whether it’s positive or negative, we just hope everything stays level-headed, reasonable, and well-thought out. We want intelligent discourse and discussion. We want happy readers. We don’t want people picking fights with others.
