Bowl Game Blowout! Open Thread for 12/30/09
Roady's Humanitarian Bowl

Most Awesome Player: Freddie Barnes, Bowling Green WR (138 receptions for 1,551 yards and 16 touchdowns)
Most Awesome Sponsor: The Idaho Lottery.

Wooh!
The Line: Bowling Green -1
Accuscore says: Bowling Green 36.1, Idaho 34.9
ESPN says: Bowling Green 38, Idaho 35
Who you should be rooting for: I honestly have no rooting interest in this game at all. I'm pretty sure I have only something like two confidence points riding on this game anyway.
Pacific Life Holiday Bowl

Most Awesome Player: Suh, Nebraska DT (82 tackles, 23 tackles for loss, 12 sacks, 10 passes defended, 1 interception, 26 QB hurries)
Most Awesome Sponsor: The Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation. No, really.

The Line: Nebraska -1
Accuscore says: Nebraska 22.4, Arizona 21.1
ESPN says: Arizona 14, Nebraska 10
Who you should be rooting for: Arizona. Pac-10 pride! This really should be a fun game though, to see how Arizona's spread works against Suh and the Nebraska defensive line.

Who else gets the chop...
Since I’m the first here, I’ll start another redundant conversation. What other coach should get the chop. And if a major coach like Gregory DOES get axed, what type of defense would you like to see?

Gregory is NOT getting axed
He’d have been shown the door at the same time as Alamar. If anyone goes it’ll be a position coach.

Here's the list of coaches:
Jeff Tedford – Head Coach
Bob Gregory – Defensive Coordinator
Andy Ludwig – Offensive Coordinator/Quarterbacks
Kevin Daft – Wide Receivers
Ron Gould – Associate Head Coach/Running Backs
Tosh Lupoi – Defensive Line
Steve Marshall – Offensive Line
Al Simmons – Defensive Backs
Kenwick Thompson – Recruiting Coordinator/Linebackers
I don’t think anyone will go this year, but if one were it would almost certainly be Kevin Daft, who coached a poor group of receivers in his first year, 2008 and an improved but still poor group in 2009. Ludwig and Marshall deserve a chance to grow with the program, Gould and Lupoi are universally acknowledged as being invaluable to the program. Simmons and Thompson are both interesting cases. The linebackers were good in Thompson’s first two years (07-08) and the DBs were good in Simmons’ first year (08, and back in the day when Simmons coached this guy named Deltha), but in ’09… horror.
So basically everybody but Lupoi and Gould is coaching for their job in 2010, but nobody is going to get fired before then.

This Texas Tech saga
is sort of bizarre. How did the coach even come up with this punishment? You really have to go out of your way to think them up.
Yay
Bowling Green broke the tie. Save a very quick Idaho touchdown, ESPN will not go to the Holiday Bowl late!
"It's going to be a long season" - Old Blues from 1868-present
Incompetent Idaho defense
How many times are they going to leave the NCAA record-setting reception leader in one-on-one coverage? You think they’d learn…
Whose domicile? OUR DOMICILE!
LOL.
Wow. I just went to look at the score on espn. Bad defense or good offense?
Who would have thought Bowlling Green-Idaho would be the best game of this bowl season?!
Whose domicile? OUR DOMICILE!
a Fiesta Bowl Redux?
a team from idaho….coming back late….to win the game 43-42….on a two-point conversion….in Boise State’s stadium
way to trippy

Drink everytime you see the Pacific Life whales. You will be wasted by halftime and dead midway through the fourth.
Whose domicile? OUR DOMICILE!
this is probably a bad sign, but i’m already getting nostalgic; ah, i remember the days when cal used to make the holiday bowl.
We're trying to get the whole set
of bowls. It’s a collector’s thing! =p

Full of it insomuch as he claims to be anything more than a professional conjecturer.

That Bowling Green-Idaho 4th quarter was awesome
All those missed tackles and blown coverage would have made Cal’s pass D blush.

Nebraska’s defense is a holy terror on a good day and they’re playing for a top 15 ranking in the next preseason. The horror (for Zona).

Just saw the Arizona-Nebraska score
WILDCATSSSS, WHAT ARE YOU DOIIIIIIIIINGG
Zona looks totally uncompetitive
They’re not doing anything on offense and Nebraska is beating them (dominating them, really) without mustering a lot of offense of its own. It reminds me of our game against USC this year.
Praise be to Tedford!
As an alternative to watching the game
Here’s Michael Lewis’ writeup on Mike Leach from 2005.
As an odd aside, Lewis must not be much of a football guy since he characterizes the split backs/under center formation (the wishbone) as “how a conventional college football offense lines up.” Like, maybe two decades ago, certainly not 4 years ago.

I think this is my favorite part:
“There’s no such thing as a perfect game in football,” Leach says. “I don’t even think there’s such a thing as the perfect play. You have 11 guys between the ages of 18 and 22 trying to do something violent and fast together, usually in pain. Someone is going to blow an assignment or do something that’s not quite right.”
That, and “Johnson’s got to do a better job holding.”

Nebraska's kicker Henery has missed only 2 FG's under 50 yards in his career!!!
D’Amato has already missed that many in his first season! Oh how I wish we had a clutch kicker.
One thing I can relate to Nebraska with is uneven QB play
Zac Lee has had one terrible season.
One thing I can’t relate to Nebraska is a shut down defense.
We’ve never had a defense even close to that since I’ve been a Cal fan (more than 20 years). Not. Even. Close.
Praise be to Tedford!
Ok can we have a defense half as good as Nebraska's I would say last years
was probably as close as we have gotten under Gregory.
If we had Nebraska's defense
Even with our offensive troubles, we’d have been a 10-win team. Maybe more.
Praise be to Tedford!
What happened to the CGB I used to know? Where’s the guts?

You know in all honesty I hardly ever root for the other Pac10 teams to win their bowls
Usually I just root for Cal and whatever Pac10 team is in the Rose or BCS to win. The only exception to my rooting for the Pac10 in the Rose or BCS is if stanfurd is in it, then I root for them to lose by 50.
BTW
according to dfineguy over on BI, we’re leading 50-30 over Nevada in WBB at the half.
WE DID IT! THE IMPOSSIBLE DREAM!!! 3-29!!! WE SHOCKED THE WORLD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Proud to hold season tickets to the only NBA team soon to be owned by a Russian oligarch.
Zona had 109 totals yards of offense
That’s a gigantic turd they laid.

So, it’s not even New Years Eve yet, and the Pac-10 has played 5 of its 7 bowl games already.
Meanwhile, the SEC has only played 2 of their 10 bowl games, and the Big Ten has only played 1 of 7.
Is there extra credit for playing later rather than earlier?

Does a trip to Toronto in the dead of winter count as extra credit?
So, basically, you gotta Go Bears!
Who gives a shit? There’s only one bowl that matters in 2010, and it’s not decided by computers and mystery voters.
The Iron Bowl?
