Bowl Game Blowout! Open Thread for 12/29/09
EagleBank Bowl

UCLA Bruins (6-6) vs. Temple Owls (9-3)
12/29/09 at 4:30 PM EST
Washington, D.C.
Initial Thoughts: I'm just thrilled at the opportunity to hear some trash talk from Bill Cosby. I had no idea he was still alive! No, really, I didn't.
Most Awesome Player: Kai Forbath, UCLA K (26/29 FG, 22/23 XP). Before you laugh, think about how you feel about Cal's special teams. Then tell me you're still laughing at the notion of having a great kicker. Honorable mention to Brian Price, UCLA DT as well.
Most Awesome Sponsor: EmmeGirls. For your marketing and special events needs. But I'll be honest, I'm not sure if this is a marketing company or an escort agency.
The Line: UCLA -4.5
Accuscore says: UCLA 25.3, Temple 20.1
ESPN says: UCLA 24, Temple 21
Who you should be rooting for: Is Pac-10 pride enough here? I'm leaving this one alone.
Champs Sports Bowl

Orlando, Florida
Initial Thoughts: Finally a game that I actually want to watch!
Most Awesome Player: Something of a toss-up between Jacory Harris, Miami QB (226/337 for 3,164 yards, 23 touchdowns, 17 interceptions) and John Clay, Wisconsin RB (265 carries for 1,396 yards and 16 touchdowns).
Most Awesome Sponsor: ClickandPark.com. The irony is that clicking on their link doesn't work.

The Line: Miami -3.5
Accuscore says: Miami 29.3, Wisconsin 26.2
ESPN says: Wisconsin 35, Miami 31
Who you should be rooting for: Miami. Because college football is always more fun when the U is prominently involved.

Who you should be rooting for: Is Pac-10 pride enough here? I’m leaving this one alone.
Let me consult with my “Root for Ucla?” checklist:
1. Does a Ucla victory place Cal in the Rose Bowl? No.
2. Are my children being held for a ransom that demands I root for Ucla? No.
3. Is a gun pointed at my head with the attacker demanding that I root for Ucla? No.
Okay, then. Go Temple!
Praise be to Tedford!

I can’t imagine a scenario where I am so bored as to actually watch a suck Temple team take on a putrid Ucla team in a bowl that should never, under any circumstances, be played. On top of that, I honestly don’t give a wet slap about who wins — though should Ucla not win, it might be fun to watch the bitterness and hatred over at BN.

I remember for kicks I became the head coach of Temple in NCAA Football just to see if it could be done. It was hard to play even on the easy setting, the team’s rating were so horrible. Nice to see them have something to get excited about in the real world.

really I think the kid has a lot of potential. Much more than Riley. This is the first time he has played football in a few years due to injuries.
Prince is playing behind a very bad and very young OL and none of UCLA’s RB’s are very good. UCLA has no real running game to take some of the pressure off of Price.

4 wins last year. 7 wins this year with a bowl win. Lots of people wrote fucla off this year, including myself. But they have shown progress. The questions you ask remain to be answered but I would rather not have to worry about them. The further fucla is down, the better for Cal.

Well, I wasn’t under the impression that the ‘new regime’ momentum was going to wear out over 2 seasons for RN at UCLA…If they don’t win at least 7 games next year, he’ll lose some momentum though (and they’ll be hard-pressed to replace Brian Price, Ayers, Verner, Austin, etc.)
did you see the talent/size/athleticism on defense…not to mention a whole bunch of 4-star OLs suckinga all year? 4 wins and 7 wins: that’s underperformance to me. we’ll see next year if the offense takes a step forward because i def think it should

Temple is Pathetic
And people thought our coaches made stupid decisions. How about throwing the ball on 3rd and 3 from your own 27 with less than 30 seconds to go in the half which stopped stopped the clock and allowing fucla to score 3 points and take the momentum into the half. How about on 4th and 1 on the fucla 10 and calling a run straight up the middle at Brian Price. Pretty crappy offensive playcalling.
Temple had this game won but those 2 playcalls absolutely killed them.

Also DSJ
is apparently “the first player in Pro Bowl history to be elected as a kick returner and wide receiver in the same season.”

Yeah very much so
Now if only the Chargers could trade for Lynch and free him from Buffalo.

I would die if he wore those ugly ass powder blue jerseys. That color needs to be banned from sports.

WHAT!?!?! Those are the best uniforms in the NFL
Besides his career is slowly dying in Buffalo right now. He needs to come back to California and resume his career on a winning team.

Yeah
I would really love for the Chargers to trade for Lynch. It seems like Buffalo really likes that other RB and Lynch’s touches have diminished.
The Chargers could really use a RB with the skills that Lynch has. I think something like a 3rd this year and 3rd next year could get him.

Miami’s #1 RB just pretzled his knee. Ouch.

Pro Bowl thoughts
-Brady should not be on there. This is a classic example of why fan votes are bad. Both Big Ben and Schaub have comparable stats, and Brady’s are massively padded by the Tampa Bay and Jax games.
-I can see the justification for leaving Moss off, but Vincent Jackson should definitely have been picked over Brandon Marshall.
-Steven Jackson is a great running back…but he racked up yards mostly by virtue of playing for a team with no passing game. I think Ryan Grant had an equally good season.
-The Sidney Rice pick is questionable. Steve Smith (NYG) and Roddy White both had similar or better seasons.
-I like how McKinnie made the Pro Bowl the week after being benched. Minnesota’s O-line is definitely overrated this year.
-Ed Reed looks like a reputation pick. Arguably Champ Bailey too.
-Andre Gurode? Really?

I dunno about Vilma either. And DRC is too aggressive IMHO, although people think he’s better than he is because they look at pick numbers.

Wouldn’t that be even more impressive since every defense would be keying on him?

Depends on how you look at it, I guess. His YPC is nothing special. It’s somewhat inaccurate to view total yardage as an indicator of success. Let’s take an extreme hypothetical: An RB has 500 carries over the course of a season, but because the defense is keying on him every down, he only gets 3 YPC. He ends up with 1500 yards on the season, but would you call that a successful season? It really depends on what exactly a Pro Bowler is supposed to be, which is somewhat ambiguous.
