Mike Tepper on Tedford, Fan Goals & Overall Team Performance
Pretty good read with Tepper's comments after the disappointing loss tomorrow. He's been around the program for 6 years so I his opinion is definitely worth something.
I tend to agree with him. Sure, sometimes it seems like he offense is a bit conservative. But the players need to make plays. The perfect plays and coverages can be called but when guys don't execute, we see what happened in our 5 losses (and a few of our wins) this season.
Editor's note: Also check out Berkelium's awesome postgame coverage on the Twitter. Take a look at all the notes he got last night from Holley, Tepper, Tedford, Gregory, etc.

yeah
I appreciate the sentiment that they want to go out and win a national championship. That’s great and all, and I want them to win a national championship, but like… don’t complain about the fans ONLY wanting a Rose Bowl, when you guys aren’t even able to win at the Poinsettia Bowl. You know what, I don’t care if we NEVER go to the Rose Bowl, if we can win some national championships. But until that happens, even a single Rose Bowl appearance will make me pretty happy, for starters.

but of course, that means the program has to step it up.

So…on facebook, we had “Yay CAL!” in the first quarter to “We came to San Deigo for THIS?” at the end.
And then our new QB recruit posted…“Fucking Pathetic”
And then one of our D-lineman posted…“Same shit! We need a lot of change next year!”
And then one of our RBs that redshirted this year posted…“The announcers said its over, but it’s just the beginning.”
Personally, only been a CAL bear since 2000…but I already feel like an old blue.
Wait, WHAT?

Are you kidding?
Or are you being serious? Did Hinder really say that? Cause he doesn’t seem like the kid who would…and why do you have these people added on facebook lol. STALKER.
I go on the boards and read stuff occasionally. ‘I was here when we were 2-and-whatever and 8-5 is a good season for Cal.’ Screw you guys. You need to get your priorities straight. This is a football program as much as it an academic institution and you need to expect it. If you don’t have those expectations, you need to walk away from this university because that’s not what our university is interested in.
Um, I’m going to give Tepper the benefit of the doubt and believe that he was blowing off a lot of steam after a very disappointing and frustrating game/season. Because otherwise, he’s kind of a class-A dick.
I mean, what is he saying? I get that the fans shouldn’t be content with an 8-5 season, but where do we direct our frustration? The coaches? The players?
Tepper needs to step back a bit and realize that as fans (even us old blues) we actually do have high hopes, aspirations, and expectations. But it’s not the fans that are killing the dreams. The fans didn’t shit the bed against Oregon. The fans didn’t stink up the stadiium against USC and OSU. The fans didn’t faceplant against UW. The fans didn’t embarrass the university on national television against Utah.
What Tepper is getting confused about are fans (like me) who have seen the pit of how bad Cal can be, and who, while desperately wanting to make a BCS game (and supporting the team during the seasons), also appreciates their efforts even in an 8 – 5 season. It’s not what we want, but we get that sometimes (well, almost always for Cal fans), we don’t get it. Does he want us to be Ucla fans, who seem to believe that championships are our god-given rights? Does he want us to be SC fans who jump off the bandwagon when times get bad? Does he want us to react to efforts like this with a chorus of boos and rotten tomatoes thrown at the team?
Get a grip, Tepper. The fans aren’t the problem with the program. The next time you want to toss accusations and point the finger of blame, start by looking in a mirror.
Whose Axe?
OUR AXE!
i think you’re reading it wrong. tepper is not bashing on the fans. i think what he’s saying is that we need to keep pushing the coaches and give them a clear message that an 8-5 season is not good enough. you know, keep the pressure up so that they don’t get too comfortable with these mediocre seasons. if there is more pressure from the fans, there will be more (much needed) changes in the program which will lead to (hopefully) better bowls/championships.
Very much agreed. I think Tepper is upset that we should be content with an 8-5 season because it sets a standard of mediocrity. We have a responsibility to demand the best from Tedford.

I think some of you are overreacting to Tepper's comments.
He’s not necessarily dumping it all on the fans — this is what I get out of what he says:
“There’s so much potential in this team (to even become a national champion), and it is not wrong for the fans to believe that.”
“It wasn’t the coaches but was the players who screwed it up by not executing.”
and I think he may be right on both notes, although it was hard to figure out how well the game plans were laid out with the players playing so poorly in those embarrassing losses.
BearTerritory.com...
…says Bears drop Davon Dunn. Anyone know why?
I'd like to smell the Roses before I die.
Speculation is that he wanted to be the #1 guy
That wouldn’t have happened at Cal.

Stadium cheering
Small point, but mic-men need to be well-selected and rocking the stadium, at the right times.
Its good for the players to think they have the talent to win a national championship....
….but how would they know how they really stack up against national championship caliber teams unless they can actually play them and beat them?
There are a lot of things that go into being a BCS team. Our fans do suck from time to time (I’ll point out the heckling of our 2010 recruits during a home game earlier this year in which old blues were yelling at them to sit down). Talent is one thing, but there’s all the administrative stuff that goes into supporting a team too, like mic-men, good in-stadium announcers, proper rules to allow the band to play during the game to pump up the team, etc.
