What did i tell you...didn't I say they would win? Yeah that's right I did didn't ? Wait.. what? They LOST?!?!?
the last three years have been disappointing in my mind
while all have seen us finish with winning records we just haven’t fulfilled our potential as a team. I don’t know, maybe I’m spoiled from the sustained success under Tedford but I think we could’ve and should’ve had double digit win totals for these past three seasons. Maybe the key to that is the inconsistent qb play that has occurred since the middle part of ’07.
What did i tell you...didn't I say they would win? Yeah that's right I did didn't ? Wait.. what? They LOST?!?!?
We didn’t have the team for a 10-win season this year. Between the awful special teams, the non-existent pass defense andthe inconsistent QB play, we had no chance for 10 wins.

We actually did, but I agree it would have been a fluke.

Well, ok, we had the talent for it, but didn’t have it together.
Tonight’s game was a good example – we let them score 27 unanswered points, but then we pull it together, get 2 consecutive defensive stops, then march down the field to bring in to within 7. Then we fall apart again. Pretty much a microcosm of the whole season. If we could just find a way to be consistent…
Well anyways, it was still an entertaining system, and I had a blast traveling to Minnesota and hanging out with friends and rooting for the Bears. And really, that’s all that matters.
CGB: Wasting Your Potential, Your Time, & Your Life Since 2006.
At least the Bears competed ‘til the end. Unfortunately, this game was confirmation that this team, for whatever reason(s), just wasn’t as good this year as it appeared it might be early in September. It was good enough, though, to give reason for hopeful optimism—if not exactly confident expectations—for a big season in 2010.
Go Bears!
by California Pete on Dec 23, 2009 8:27 PM PST reply actions
Where does the optimism stem from? We don’t have a QB that can play with the big boys in conference. That makes us middle of the Pac again. Lets not kid ourselves, since Riley hasn’t progressed I don’t see any reason why he will next year. Tedford will hem and haw again next spring, and in the end he will choose Riley over giving us a fresh start with a new QB. De ja vu all over again.
Did you know that the QB and the QB alone is what determines the success of a QB. Caring about the offensive line is for pussies!

I’m not quite sure what to think about next year’s defense, but the hopeful vision I have of 2010 sees one or more outstanding tailbacks alongside an experienced, occasionally brilliant (if so far inconsistent) senior quarterback in the backfield. Add an experienced offensive line and what is shaping up to be a talented receiving corps (Jones, Lagemann, Ross, Miller), along with familiarity with both the OC and the line coach, and you have the makings of a potentially very good offense.
Don’t get me wrong, though. I remain pretty skeptical myself, and I label this vision as “hope” not “expectation”. My more level-headed self “expects” Cal football to remain stuck in a holding pattern of .500 conference records for the next 2 to 4 years, until the dividends from the new facilities on campus finally start paying off. Rose Bowl 2015 or Bust!

I’m not gonna lie, I voted for relieved. After the disappointment wears off I’ll be able to go about my business for nine whole months.
When Ali fought Frazier for the third time in Manilla, he came out flat footed and bombed Joe for the first few rounds. When Ali ran out of gas and Frazier was still standing and mounting a vicious comeback, Ali clinched with Frazier.
“I thought they said you was washed up.”
“They lied.”
The pundits and commentators lied. It wasn’t the first time and it won’t be the last, and it wasn’t like we were the only team this season that was lied about. Oklahoma, USC, Ole Miss, LSU, Oklahoma State all proved that the commentators were full of shit, not to mention Cincy who proved that the commentators were full of shit going the other way. It is what it is.
I’m not disappointed because the players don’t owe me anything. They are, ultimately, a group around my age who have shown substantially more drive and discipline than I have at any time in my life just to get to where they are. They didn’t live up to my woefully overinflated expectations. Boo-hoo.
Maybe the coaches do a really good job and have bad luck. Maybe they do a really bad job and have good luck. At the end of the day I know fuck all about football except that Alamar needs to find a new job, so fuck all of that noise.
The 2009 season is dead, long live the 2010 season, where perhaps I won’t end up writing unintelligible gibberish like this.

I think this might be the best thing for Tedford. Look, we’ve not had a coach last this long at Cal since the Flapper days. Perhaps this is the time when he does a top to bottom look at the program? Blah year, blah ending.

Speaking of futility, the A’s signed Coco Crisp today. I’m so glad the A’s haven’t abandoned their tried-and-true m.o. of signing aging free-agents to 1-year deals! It’s worked great SO far, I can’t wait for the season to start!

Side note
I thought the announcing was awful. There were two obvious personal foul calls missed. The one on the sideline I could give them a pass for, but the helmet to helmet smash after the ball was gone was ridiculous. For the refs to miss it was one thing, but then for the announcers to declare how great a hit it was and that it was so “clean” was just completely ignoring the reality. Not only that but they kept coming back to that “great” hit. At the end of the game, the announcers just went on autopilot. If Cal makes the 2 pt play they are one score down. The announcers had decided the game was over apparently and were not even interested in talking about the decisions on the field. Sell the game for F sake, blah
Mike Patrick is a strange little man
And Chris James could be the worst of the ESPN announcers. That’s saying something.

I’ve never been a big Mike Patrick fan. He’s generally adequate, but this wasn’t his best night.
I am, however, a Craig James apologist. Perhaps it’s because I’m a sentimental child of the ’80s, and I remember fondly when James and Eric Dickerson made up one of the all-time-great backfields as the SMU “Pony Express”. Dickerson became an NFL legend, and James had a nice stint with the Patriots, too.
It’s long forgotten now, but before GameDay totally blew up, Craig James filled Herbstreet’s seat. I’ve grown to like Herbie, but for a long time I was sad to see James jump ship for what, at the time, seemed a more prestigious spot at CBS. While I’m not sure it’s quite the same thing, it’s somewhat reminiscent of the way an unheralded replacement named Jon Stewart stepped into the vacated job at the Daily Show. Sometimes the best job is the one you already have.

Craig James spent the better part of the 2004 Holiday Bowl being an apologist for the BCS, even mocking us at one point in the broadcast about our taking umbrage at being shut out of the Rose Bowl. And that was before the game got out of hand, so he was especially tough to listen to that night as the game wore on. That’s how I remember Craig James.
That said, James was okay the other night. (He was surprisingly complimentary of Cal and Jahvid Best at one point that I recall off the top of my head). And I do appreciate his role as the “other” running back with Eric Dickerson on the Pony Express. But after the 2004 Holiday Bowl, he hasn’t been one of my faves.
Praise be to Tedford!
I agree. Patrick at one point thought we gained two yards when we had gained 12. That was the worst call off the game. The second worst was when James claimed a Ute didn’t make a helmet to helmet hit despite the fact it was as blatant as it gets. But I guess he only wanted to talk about SMU – which for some reasonrhey thought was a heartwarming story.
Additionally they did no actual analysis instead relying on made-up concepts like momentum and “wanting it.” Do you know why cal only rushed three all night? Clearly because the players didn’t want it not because Gregory sucks.

I had misdiagnoses being passed off as intelligent observations
The supposed space cushion being given to receivers by DBs had little or nothing to do with the massive amount of YAC. Utah receivers were getting yards after the catch because Cal’s tackling was poor, even from sure tacklers like Syd’Quan. If Cal had whiffed on half as many tackles as they did, Utah’s offense never would have gotten off the ground.

This
There were a TON of missed tackles, maybe the most I’ve seen this season. It felt like every Utah short yardage completion was accompanied by a Cal defender flying across the screen and grabbing air, and then Utah receivers gaining country miles of YAC.
Oh, I just ignored that part of the comment because it is obvious by now that many Cal fans don’t know what our defensive scheme actually entails, and worse, they don’t care to learn. They will just make poorly thought out comments about our defense sucking and firing Gregory forever.
Why are you such a Gregory apologist, paleodan?
by HolmoePhobe on Dec 23, 2009 10:25 PM PST up reply actions
Mostly because I think Gregory has made our defense successful more often than not. And in my opinion, I don’t think guys who want to throw themselves at other guys really hard will do well academically at Cal (like the typical SEC lineman would get a 0 GPA at Cal). Zack Follett was the definite exception. So we have to play smart football, with less aggression.
How, then, would you explain why Ucla’s D is usually better than ours? They have the same academic requirements.

I don’t mean admission to school, because you’re right about that. I mean success once the kid is here in school. Cal classes are hard…way harder than most schools. You see how many players are being declared ineligible for bowls because of academics. I think that means they failed out of school last quarter/semester, right? Cal classwork is really difficult, and I don’t think Tedford really has a choice about all the emphasis he has put on academics.

Couldn't that be explained as opposing teams saw Cals weakness
was their pass defense so they didn’t run the ball as much and just passed, passed, and passed some more?
I know if I were an opposing OC I would throw early and often on Cal’s defense.
Really when you consider the weakness of our pass defense the run defense is either even more impressive or indicative of a serious overemphasis with regards to putting players in the box. (I’m going for even more impressive.)

You're correct
I don’t think Riley is the major problem although I’d like to see him be more of a leader. The most pressing need for the Bears if pass protection and a wide receiver that doesn’t have the case of the dropsies.
There is a legitimate conversation to be had about whether it’s worth inserting one of the backups precisely because they need the experience so that they will be better a year down the road.

Yes. That seems so long ago now. Such an optimistically hopeful time. I feel bad for him to, but the fact remains he played terribly this year. It seems since the utter debacle of Ayoob we have gone from QB to QB always thinking it would get better. I am tired of hoping that the next QB will be better, only to find they are not. That brown spinning thing coming at you in the air...you need to catch it!
That way, several drives would have continued…I would love to say it was all Riley’s fault, and things can get better next year, but we need receivers that can hold on to some tougher catches – even when they’ll get hit – if we want to win against tough defenses (i.e, go to the Rose bowl). I think at least one of those picks, that led to points for the Utes, was a blown catch, and there is no way to keep up if they keep dropping passes or let the balls bounce off the pads into the air…because Riley will overthrow the other ones. Oh yeah, the receivers need to be able to get open too. Say what you will about him, but I think we were spoiled by Desean “Long beach Poly” Jackson.
The worst was Miller’s drops. We expect Tucker to drop passes, but not Anthony. It hurts the most if you don’t see it coming.

Has a winning season ever felt so disappointing?
It’s not as if we can point to anyone aspect or position of the team as a reason for our five losses.
Every position besides RB has to be open to competition next year.
Alamar must be fired. Gregory, as upset as I am about the defense; the three man pass rushes, the 90% zone coverage we played tonight, and allowing true freshman QB’s to look like Heisman candidates (Utahs QB passed for over 300 and had about a 70% completion rate in only his what 5th start?) gets one more year to right his ship.
Riley is a leader and tries really hard and is respected by his teammates but he is what his numbers say he is, which is a 50-55% passer who struggles with his accuracy and often misses on some of the easiest throws that a freshman (like Utahs tonight made) should make. While he usually doesn’t throw the back breaking Nate Longshore type picks, that’s often because he misses so badly that no one can catch the ball. However, I feel we have just traded Nates picks for Rileys fumbles, as he had another one tonight. Riley just seems so careless with the ball and constantly puts it on the ground.
I still can’t believe that in the last game of the season Cal still doesn’t know how to defend the WR bubble screen, middle WR screen or the quick WR pass to the flats. It isn’t as if Cal has never seen three WR sets to one side with the quick pass to one of them. Whenever a team needs a quick 8 yard gain on Cal they run this and Gregory refuses to adjust.
I agree, those screens are some of the most frustrating things to watch. Any QB can see we only have two DB’s lined up opposite 3 receivers, and the LB’s are shading blitz. Its such an easy throw, and the safety usually has to come up to make the stop, giving them at least 10 yards. And after teams absolutely killed us with screens, it’s pretty pathetic that we never had an answer.
It frustrates me to no end
I don’t understand why Gregory can’t better prepare his defense for this and get them ready to stop them. Plus the fact that we seem to favor zone coverage means no DB is even up on the line of scrimmage to challenge this play. The WR usually has no pressure on him while making the catch and turning up field to run.
I don't think
Gregory deserves another year. There’s been too many times that the Bears defense hasn’t lived up to expectations with Gregory. Although, part of the blame is offensively too many thre and outs with no rest for the defense.
The soft coverages, the poor tackling, and the lack of any kind of pressure on the quarterback is disconcerting.
There isn`t one person to point the finger at.
Gregory isn`t out there bouncing off of could-be tackles-for-loss out there.

The question then becomes, who is responsible for technique matters such as that?

The position coaches usually teach that…

Trust me I am not the biggest fan of Gregory
I think as a coach, he doesn’t get the most out of his players and has some what of a defeatist attitude when it comes to coaching but he has earned one more year. I will let him slide on the “lack of a pass rush” plea.
If Tedford were to go in a different direction I would love to see Tedford bring in someone like Justin Wilcox DC of Boise State. Chris played in the Pac10 (at Oregon) and coached LB’s at Cal from 2003-05. He has done a great job with that Boise State defense and he has experience in the Pac10. It will never happen but I can dream.
I don’t think Gregory deserves another year.
Stop the fucking presses.

I just want to point out...
…that it says something about what Tedford has done for Cal football that an 8-5 season feels disappointing.
The last time Cal had back-to-back 8-win seasons before Tedford was 1950-1951.

Wait…being glad that your historically shitty program has a coach who consistently wins many games is a bad thing?

As someone else once pointed out it was an 8-5 season that could have
easily been a 4 or 5 win season had Cal not had a few bounces and key plays go their way.
I attended Cal during the latter Holmoe years so I know how bad it can be. Really the way we lost was not pretty and the fact that people are saying that every position should be open for competition shows how unhappy people were with the play of the entire team.
I also just want to add, getting to 8 wins in todays CFB is a hell of a lot easier than it was back just two decades ago. Teams play 13 regular season games and can schedule easy OOC games to help inflate their record. I am not saying it isn’t impressive what Tedford has done but I don’t want it to seem like winning 8 games in this decade is just as hard as it was in the 50;s.
I believe most CFB teams only played 10 games in the 50’s and usually didn’t have the benefit of playing teams like Sac State, Eastern Washington, or UC Irvine.
This chick has figured out what`s wrong with the Bears...

I guess I'll be the one to post sad bear pictures as no one else has stepped up yet.

Great screensaver pic
The third one has been on my computer at work too many times… the 4th one is ok if we lose a hard-fought game by 7, but that didn’t happen.
I think Gregory has done a good to great job before – we shifted to the 3-4 to take advantage of our LB’s, and it worked pretty well, but this year they didn’t quite do enough, and the secondary sucked. I’m surprised we won 8 games with a secondary ranked 108th at year’s end. I think the reason we beat Stanford is because Luck must have stolen Riley’s girlfriend that week or something ( I blame all my problems on tits or wheels). Maybe the only reason Alamar is still around is the fact that his daughters are HOT!
