disappointing play from this team
the defense can’t put any consistent pressure on Wynn and the offense is sputtering after negative and no-yardage plays
What did i tell you...didn't I say they would win? Yeah that's right I did didn't ? Wait.. what? They LOST?!?!?
That one commentator at halftime was an idiot. “Once again, a Pac-10 team looking like they don’t want to be there” Right. That’s why we jumped out to the early lead and dominated the first quarter. Our problem isn’t not wanting to be there.
I've been Honked...
awww… you don’t travel with the team?!

yeah.
They never got a shot of what actually happened when that guy got wide open on Cattouse. Looks like he may have just turned his hips and he couldn’t recover

I think Nnabuife got faked on a double move.

that could be why Tedford was talking to Nna on the sidelines

Just from what I glanced, the Utah receiver seemed to fake in, Nnabuife WAY overplayed, so did Cattouse, and he went back inside on the post.

yes.
our offense on a few of those drives had some total whiffs on blocks.

Gotta regroup Bears
That was an ugly 2nd quarter.
Adjustments. More through the air.
Taisetsu na mono protect my balls!
No… that one run call on 2nd ad 5 was way to obvious. Riley hit Verran in stride both times; we just gotta get that hook up

yeah, but now that a couple very catchable balls have been dropped
riley gets jumpy.

Look, I know we're down two scores
But Vereen is averaging 6.6 ypc. I really think we need to focus on running the ball here. Yes, that means it’ll take longer to catch up. But watching Riley bob back and forth like a spastic chihuahua before flinging the ball in an random direction clearly isn’t working.
Are you watching the same game? Of his throws, only one was off target. I think we need to break out the 5 wide with Lagemann and Miller getting some 8-10 yard routes

by Thoroughbred on Dec 23, 2009 6:39 PM PST up reply actions
that’s a pretty decent observation. we just need our WRs to catch and hold onto the ball.

Yeah, i think the first drop when Verran got lit up was excusable, but I think he should’ve caught the second one. We can get it back to him because he’s obviously separating from his man
I don’t think their LBs can cover our guys underneath. Unfortunately, I don’t know if Ludwig is the type of coordinator to do what i want (prob for good reason)

Utah was stacking 8/9 in the box that entire 2nd quarter (until the last drive when they expected pass). So I’m not sure they’ll deviate from that until Riley can prove he can sustain drives with his arm.

I don’t think Riley CAN sustain drives with his arm → I think Utah is going to stack the box pretty much no matter what.
Utah was playing a base 4-3 at the beginning…those two extra guys give Vereen no gaps to hit.

we get the ball first. i don’t think so if we come out and execute. but the team does get the air taken out of them when they get these bad 3 and outs

by Thoroughbred on Dec 23, 2009 6:42 PM PST up reply actions
I'm more concerned about the defense
And I’m not sure it’s really the D-line. The back 8 just aren’t getting it done, especially on pass coverage.
I expect the Bears will blitz a lot more, and if Utah picks it up and the corners get beat, this could get ugly.
As for the offense, a nice drive on the first series could right the ship quickly, especially if the defense then gives the ball right back.
Go Bears!
by California Pete on Dec 23, 2009 6:42 PM PST reply actions
Well the way to help the defense
is run Vereen and get first downs. A 10 plus drive burning some clock would help keep the defense off the field.
Btw
What was up with the PI call on Bishop?
yeah. Horrible. the guy was turning to catch the ball and bishop got his hand onthe shoulder. you’d think the ref would see he didn’t TURN him

by Thoroughbred on Dec 23, 2009 6:43 PM PST up reply actions
ticky tack call.
but his hand did appear to be on the guys back.

by Rocksanddirt on Dec 23, 2009 6:43 PM PST up reply actions
He had his arm wrapped around the Utah receiver
It was an obvious PI from behind, from the front it looked like nothing.
he didn’t turn him. it’s not a PI. the guy was moving his hips
Taisetsu na mono protect my balls!
by Thoroughbred on Dec 23, 2009 6:43 PM PST up reply actions
I know
But, the ref thought it was enough contact that would allow him to get his arms up to catch the pass hence the flag.
Utes ahead 3-1 on yards?
121 yds vs 257 yds at the half. Not good. Nnabufe (sp?) is going to play Sundays some year though.
did you see what happened on the wide open TD? they only gave me a shot of the catch, not the lead up

2nd half on radio for me
Have to catch second half on radio, unfortunately. Cattouse was questionable, but let’s check the torrent, if someone posts one. Another thing I saw was linebackers were out of position again, a la the Oregon game. Frustrating. Sounds like 2nd half might be better.

We were probably boned either way.
Yeah, but if it goes into the end zone there’s a chance of getting it at the 20

Caught the first half HD TV, but second 1/2 radio. Christmas, girlfriend… Hope someone posts a torrent.
Thank goodness this wasn’t playing in front of a packed house, like it would’ve been at Vegas or San Francisco.

That could have been a big play
Caught them in man and the LB got caught up with the TE releasing.
Yes.
I think that may have been his second worst throw of his career (after the open Vereen vs USC)

Man, if Utah’s QB held onto the ball just once on the zone read, he could get some yards. They aren’t respecting his running ability at all.

Wow
Somebody post Anthony Miller’s one-handed grab against Minnesota so we can all remember he catches it.
Btw
Vereen bitched out there. You can see him slow down as the Utah player falls on the ball. Should have made the tackle.
I can’t fucking remember the last time Cal lost and I thought to myself “you know what? at least they played hard and gave it all they got.”
i'm here to clean your pool but i don't have a pool *bowchica bowow*
I think we played hard against USC, we just executed poorly.
by atomsareenough on Dec 23, 2009 7:20 PM PST up reply actions
I’d say he does. He keeps the offense on the field, they stay in rhythm and eat up clock. Defense doesn’t have to deal with 15 three and outs and get back on the field. Defense can play their style and not have to keep making adjustments. Both mental and physical fatigue as well.
And just the fact that we’re winning is a huge morale boost. I think they’d play with a lot more confidence if we’re winning and the offense got their backs rather than having 15 three and outs and having to get back on the field.
Maybe we’ll see him if nothing happens on this drive/

FOr as bad as the defense was in the 1st half
they’ve played well in the 2nd (minus the big 5 men in the backfield play). They’ve made an appearance. The offense looks like garbage.
I have a buddy who changed his pick to "Utah" with the highest confidence level.
This came immediately after hearing who would be out for the game.
I think Tedford will say
We’re going to look at every position next year and make them earn the spot.
I was all – throw it! YES! Catch it! YES!!!
