Radio: 1550 AM KFRC
Kansas Blog: Rock Chalk Talk (check out both of the Q&As, ours and theirs!); they've done a great job breaking down the game and you should definitely click over and peruse!
Announcers: Brent Musburger, Bob Knight
Time: 9 PM EST/6 PM PST
Injury report: DJ Seeley will miss the game due to a death in the family.
SoCal Oski posted this earlier, but please people, check out this awesome Randle profile by Andy Katz, which displays his competitive spirit on and off the court.
When he was older, he got to the park but wouldn't get picked, as his mother said. That stigma of being the short guy stuck with him when he was at high school and then into his early career at Cal, where his scoring average went from 6.5 to 11.8 points per game in his first two seasons under then-coach Ben Braun.
"I don't know why people make such a big deal out of height," Randle said. "I'm playing against guys who are 6-5 and up and I'm still able to do things that I want to do. That's life. I'm all about proving people wrong, and that's Jerome Randle. Jerome Randle is about proving people wrong. I love it. It really motivates me to prove everyone wrong that doubts me, that don't think I can play at this level or the next level."

Ugggh
This Sparty-Texas game they’re calling a foul on every play, the ball keeps on getting knocked out of bounds…probably doesn’t end for another 20 minutes.

I say we stay competitive if we don't turn the ball over and move around on offense. Also
if we hold Kansas to mostly one shot possessions we shouldn’t get killed.

Kansas is overrated. Even if we win I wouldn’t say we’re that good. Tournament team sure, but we’re not talking final 4 here.
WIth that said I really like the attitude/heart and just the character of this team. Good group of guys.

Not exactly a secret – last time you played ball and were picking teams, who got picked first, the black guy, or the white guy? The superior athlete is known. Just watch the Olympics – like say, the 100, 200, 400 meter finals.
Those white guys who made those statements obviously have a chip on their shoulder. Frustrated at reality and trying not to be part of the statistics. They don’t have to be. Just be 1 good player that dispels all else is all they should worry about. Larry Bird certainly rose above that. So did Jackie Robinson.
The Indiana Pacers certainly aren’t racist.

I think this one’s on randle. He tried to do too much instead of managing the game and taking what they were giving us.
Boykin’s probably the only reason this wasn’t a blowout early. His hustle man I love it.
Good showing by the bears. No moral victories though so we better start winning our games from here on out.

Best effort of the young season
Cal played great tonight until late. We were able to avoid having Boykin in foul trouble which was big (by the way, I would argue that the Syracuse blowout only happened after Boykin head to the bench with 2 quick fouls…in addition to us missing Theo).
The lack of depth is probably going to cost us a games here and there that we should have won, but this game should be a big confidence builder. Even with the Pac-10 being weak this year, a Pac-10 title would still be quite special. The game tonight restored my faith that this is a very plausible goal.

You were so amped at the start. Swearing, and having confidence that we could do it. I was thinking you were maybe drinking a little…
Sorry I couldn’t be around during the live chat (above) but I have made my notes accordingly.
In summary, very surprising game for me. Kansas should have busted balls earlier by really focusing harder on that interior advantage, like they did in the 2nd. I guess Self was letting them work up a sweat and find a comfortable groove first. Otherwise, you get too tactical (by dumping it down low too much too soon) and you’re athletes’ shots won’t fall at the end when you need them to. But still, they found a way to get Theo isolated defensively in the post at the end, and that was what I expected, and was the ballgame at that point.
Bears did a great job by being able to stay close for as long as they did, but it was just too much for us, as we all knew. And yet, I had fun coming in and reading your enthusiastic and positive comments, TB.
I think we can all have fun with this team from here on out. We won’t be playing the caliber of Ohio St., Syracuse, or Kansas the rest of the way (until the end) and everything will be on par.
Cheers.
Final thoughts:
1) Boykin is team MVP. Without him we are dead. Without Randle, we wouldn’t be nearly as good. Without Boykin, we are dead on the inside. Think about it. He is very quietly becoming the Most Valuable Player. Maybe not the MVP of the team, but definitely the “Most Valuable”, no?
2) PC is the most over-rated. He’s become very streaky! More than I can recall.
3) Randle was too amped. The chip he had on his shoulder meant he was off his game a bit tonight, trying to prove to Collins he wasn’t the younger sibling (but he was).
4) Oh what we wouldn’t do to have Ryan Anderson, Jordan Wilkes, or even Tyler Harrison – all would have, could have been eligible playing members of this team, if not for NBA stardom, moving on in life after 4 yr graduation, and career ending surgery. Keep any one of those scholarships and make Smith a walk-on again as was initially agreed upon.
Agree with most of these points. However, Christopher has always been streaky – and tonight he was really good streaky. Towards the end of the first half he was on fire, and then Kansas adjusted and really hounded him from then on.
by Tedfordisgod on Dec 23, 2009 12:07 AM PST up reply actions
good points, particularly about randle, who was out of control at certain times.
a small silver lining on the big man issue, though: was there ever a better year for the conference to lose its top five rebounders (Brockman, Taj Gibson, Baynes, Pendergraph, and Hill)?
