Bowl Game Blowout! Open Thread for 12/22/09

Oregon State Beavers (8-4) vs. BYU Cougars (10-2)
12/22/09 at 8:00 PM
Las Vegas, Nevada

Initial Thoughts: It seems so very odd to me that every year the NCAA forces Mormons to make a mass pilgrimage to the City of Sin.
Most Awesome Player: Max Hall, QB BYU (256/379 for 3368 yards, 30 touchdowns, 14 interceptions), though he didn't quite live up to the Heisman hype after that opening weekend win against Oklahoma.
Most Awesome SponsorMeadow Gold Ice Cream.

The Line: Oregon State -2.5.
Accuscore Says
: BYU 32, Oregon State 31
ESPN Says: Oregon State 34, BYU 27
Who you should be rooting for: Oregon State.  For Pac-10 pride!

Is it rong that I think Cal’s gonna get rolled tomorrow? I just don’t see this going well. Just a gut feeling, and I hope I’m wrong. It’s OK if they lose, so long as they show up. That would be a scenario that we haven’t seen in 2009.

First play I see after switching over from Cal-Kansas is Oregon St fake a punt. The receiver was wide open, caught the ball, and lost his balance. The fourth down failed. Tough day for the Beavs.

Hope you guys can go beat the other MWC mormons! I actually kind of like Utah, but I’m still pulling for Pac-10.

by scotty256 on Dec 22, 2009 10:10 PM PST up reply actions

Not surprising, I guess

These Mountain West teams have a lot to play for against the Pac-10. And Oregon State had no real reason to care about this game, especially after getting stuck in a second-tier bowl game after almost making the Rose Bowl.

It doesn’t bode well for tomorrow.

by bear88 on Dec 22, 2009 10:39 PM PST reply actions

My first thought seeing this unfold...

…was that this might be the downside to the Pac-10 scheduling regular season games on that first weekend in December. I understand the thought of extending the season (i.e., staying relevant while the other conferences play their championship games on 1st Saturday in December). Not to take anything away from BYU, but I can’t help but think OSU still had a hangover from the disappointment in the Civil War. Who wouldn’t be disappointed? They went from Rose Bowl to Maaco Bowl, and then had to play just 19 days after the Civil War loss.

The other conferences that play games on the 1st weekend in December don’t have this problem. The losers of those conference championship games go to bowls played on December 30 or later.

Praise be to Tedford!
