Bowl Game Blowout! Open Thread for 12/20/09
The R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl
Southern Miss Golden Eagles vs. Middle Tennessee State Blue Raiders
12/20/09 at 8:30 PM
New Orleans, Louisiana
Initial Thoughts: Oh no! The Red Raiders just blue themselves! Most Awesome Player: DeAndre Brown, Southern Miss WR (67 receptions for 1117 yards and 12 touchdowns in 2008, 43 receptions for 720 yards and 7 touchdowns, one horrifically broken leg in last year's New Orleans Bowl)
Let's take another look at that, eh?
Most Awesome Sponsor: R+L Carriers. At first I thought they would be more related to aircraft carriers than mail carriers, but oh well. I don't really see this bowl sponsorship lifting them to the same level as UPS and FedEx, but you never know.
Accuscore says: Southern Miss 29.5, Middle Tennessee 27.9
ESPN says: Middle Tennessee State 34, Southern Miss 31
Who you should be rooting for: Middle Tennessee so they can raise their profile to the point that they reach a bowl game against the Red Raiders. So we can then see Al Davis draft the winning QB to lead the Oakland Raiders.

all right… i got 7 confidence points on So Miss, but I’m not happy about it. MTSU is solid.
Avi, you’re off to a riproaring start. UCF over Rutgers? REALLY?

I told you, I’ve watched only about 20% of college football outside of Cal games this year—I have no real feel for any teams outside the Pac-10. I’m going to get crushed this year.

what % did you watch last year?
yeah, i don’t have as good a feel for these games…something tells me i should pick more upsets than i am, so i’m doing things like pick Big Ten underdogs?!?!?!?! (but only one or two)

About twice as much, esp the SEC games and the Saturday Night lineup. More importantly I gambled a lot more…so I actually followed up on the games I was watching to see what was deficient with everyone.

I wonder who’s going to be handling ST next year. Doesn’t seem like we have the money to hire another full-time coach and keep ALLLAMAAARRRRRRRRRR as our TE guy

I think that would be more a problem of exceeding the allowed number of on-field coaches, but I don’t know the definition of on-field coach or the maximum number allowed so I’ve got nothing.

If it’s true, I’d guess they might do a little shuffling around without outright letting someone go.

What do you mean “if the boards can be trusted”? Did I miss something? Someone getting fired?

Apparently, Alamar will either need to find another job or be demoted just to coaching TEs. Or something along those lines

14-0 Southern Miss. I believe I’m well on my way to racking up (checks bowl order)… one point! Huzzah!

That would make things really difficult for dome teams.

Domes will be addressed in the next amendment.
They should’ve thought about that before they built a dome.
Isn’t the field at the the University of Phoenix stadium on wheels so they can roll the grass out into the sun to grow when they’re not playing?

Yes, but that’s because University of Phoenix Stadium is a magical space palace.

Lots of baseball players seem to hate the stuff. Everyone says Vladimir Guerrero’s knees are ruined because of the years he spent playing on artificial turf in Montreal.

I kind of worry that the guy’s just snakebit. I mean, he was recruited with the same class as Mitch Schwartz and Justin Cheadle but he sat out a year before enrolling due to injury. So when you think about it he’s sat out something like half of the last 3 years.
