Cal will not play in the Holiday Bowl
According to Okanes, his source tells him that the winner of USC-Arizona will be picked, provided Oregon wins (if Oregon loses they are the automatic Holiday pick).
So if we beat UDub, we are almost certainly going to the Sun Bowl. If we lose...well, check out our bowl odds post for that one. (HT royrules for the link)

Really, Arizona? What is it about Zona that makes them so attractive?

The attendance at the Holiday Bowl has been pretty much the same every year for the past 5 years. Cal will have the better record. Cal may have the return of Best. Cal will be higher ranked. Cal beat Arizona.
The only reason this is happening is because this would be the third time Cal would be in the Holiday Bowl in five years.
It'll be just you, me, and Peter Nincompoop.
this..
and maybe they’ve struck a deal with the Sun Bowl too.
I think it’s a moot point though since I’m favoring USC to win
Physical.
This is a shame. While the payout for these bowls is similar, the TV ratings are not. Heck the Emerald Bowl had twice as many viewers as the Sun Bowl. It is in the afternoon on New Years Eve whereas all the other bowls are at night. This sorta makes me want OSU to win.

If OSU wins I figure the Furd will be picked up for the Emerald Bowl, putting us in Vegas.

Vegas Bowl had as many viewers as the Sun. Viewership may increase given the top 20 matchup between BYU and Cal. And, Vegas > El Paso.

Also Cal would roll on BYU.

I don’t really see why you’d think that. I think Cal is better but they have a decent team and have beaten Oklahoma (knocking Bradford out) and an alright Utah team.

Because Oklahoma couldn’t pass protect to save their lives at the beginning of the season. Their line literally did not know how. So that leaves BYU getting blown out at home by a crap FSU team, getting blown out at home by a really good TCU team, and edging a crap Utah team.
Oklahoma can at least hang their hat on a first-rate defense, BYU isn’t good at anything.

Kind of like Georgia Tech’s defensive coordinator?

I was at Sports Authority this weekend
The one in East PA and I was like ugh… they’re showing the ’Furd game. Nobody cares. I want to see the USC/UCLA score. And then 2 girls were next to me talking to the greeter about college football. Hot definitely. I thought they were rich spoiled ’Furd girls. Turned out they were ASU and they were “devastated” over their loss that week against UA.
Too bad the Big East can't play in this year's Sun Bowl
It would be fun if Cal played against Cignetti and Pitt.
Whose domicile? OUR DOMICILE!
Aren’t we projected to play Oklahoma? I think that would be great for the program – obviously if we won – the coverage, the name recognition will give the program a nice boost.
I wonder how well we recruit in Oklahoma.

Can’t remember a player from OK, but Kenwick Thompson is getting us in that Texas pie (his roots)
Physical.
I’m glad to at least see that we’ve had recent success outside of California.

Yeah, but unfortunately El Paso is a million miles from where the talent is in Texas. The Sun Bowl just doesn’t help on that level.
I think the actual location of the Bowl is a little overblown these days. Anyone who wants to see a game can watch it on TV
Physical.
Oh, I agree 100%. Just saying that if you think that a game being in Texas, it helps Texas recruiting (at the least coaches could make visits during the bowl week or get to know local coaches, etc) the Sun Bowl doesn’t help.
It would also be fun if Cal beat UW this weekend!

Sun Bowl Advantage:
It’s on CBS. Which is national broadcast TV with the best commentating crews in the industry, IMO.
Let’s see 2pm on New Years Eve versus every other Pac-10 bowl which is on at primetime on ESPN/ABC. See the ratings link above, the Sun has half the viewers of the Emerald and Holiday bowls.
It'll be just you, me, and Peter Nincompoop.
i remember the times last year. if it’s a high quality matchup though (and much better than the ones during the same timeslot), i could see a big increase in viewership if cal and oklahoma make it there
Physical.
Not so much if it is Cal and Texas Tech or Missouri.

In fairness, the Sun Bowl matchup last year kind of sucked: Oregon State vs. Pitt. And the game turned into a 3-0 snore . . . I mean, “defensive battle.”
If it were, say, Cal-Oklahoma, the ratings would likely be improved.
it was epic.
but boring to the non afficianado.

Open Request
Some one, PLEASE, please, please make a post on what to see in El Paso. I am considering going since this will likely be the last trip for a while, but I have no idea if it will be interesting other then “Hey, somewhere I haven’t been before” — like Bakersfield was this past weekend.
and please some one who is a native/former and not just someone with access to wikipedia.
Thanks!!!

I second this.
I’ve never been more eastern out of the west coast than Phoenix, and that was just for a flight layover to Hawaii.

New Mexican food? What does that entail?
